@Angeal Astral Well all in all it is a high quality game, with for the time, great graphics, an excellent soundtrack and sympathetic core characters. Main complaints about it are usually the high character count (which you can't collect in one playthrough), a sometimes repetitive nature (Fort Dragonia multiple playthroughs) and the little connection to the more popular predecessor. I still recommend playing Chrono Trigger first so you can appreciate these connections to the fullest.
@Phils Phindings I've finished it twice Chrono Trigger and it's an excellent game in all its areas. Two years ago I started with Chrono Cross, played for a couple of hours but I didn't get hooked on the combat system and stopped playing it. I never knew if it's really as good as they say and maybe I have a very closed mind, perhaps I'll try again and see if I can enjoy the game and especially the combat system.
The music just gets you so pumped to play the game.

from the start on you know you are in for a fun adventure by the tone of the theme excellent game have too confess I have yet not beat this game so that is on my list to go back and finish this game.
I feel like I need to give this game more of a chance. I was never really into it all that much. I absolutely love the music, that much is for sure. Yasunori Mitsuda is one of my favorite composers of all time, if not my absolute favorite, but in terms of the game itself, I didn't enjoy what I played. However, I'm nearing the end of my first full playthrough of Chrono Trigger now after years of playing it but never beating it, so maybe when I finally put that game to rest, I can try to get back into this one at full force, because I definitely want to see how the story plays out.
You really should, it gets better and better as the game goes on, and has arguably one of the best OSTs of all time.

Chrono Cross is definitively underrated, I agree. Chrono Trigger, more than, deserves its praise, though.
the amazing in cross is how they put things together little by little until you realize it's the same world of trigger but in a paralel universe. trigger was more "lineal" about the plot (i mean good guys vs bad guy). Cross has a lot of plot twists

Every time I hear this track I get goosebumps as well as feelings of nostalgia from playing this game. I'll never forget the first time I heard it... No other song captures the spirit of an epic and mystical journey, hell even the nuances of life itself. It's beautifully epic Hands down my favorite RPG theme.

Frankly, I tried it several times and never could quite enjoy it. A part of that might be simply not living up to Chrono Trigger, but if you've got the soundtrack then you've already got everything that's unarguably great about this game.

There was a period of time, stretching between FF6 on the SNES to Skies of Arcadia on the Dreamcast when J-rpgs were just so damn good! Grandia, FF-Anything, Chrono-Cross, Shining Force 3, and a ton of others that I have for my Playstation1. Not being critical of current stuff, but damn they just kicked so much butt back then, devs were in the zone!

+Michael Dougherty It was probably because they didn't have access to the super fancy ultra graphics that we have today. So they were forced to rely more on storytelling and characterization. Once Final Fantasy went 3D, then they focused more on the graphics, and not as much on the story.
+Sinbad Kaminari I think similarly, but I think it's developers *think* that's what we want. By trying to appeal to a more massive player base with flashiness and prettiness, they lost ability to focus more on the life and character of the game. It's an absolute shame because the mid-90s was gold.

I used to have a puggy! On topic though... I'm telling you guys. It's the evil corporations being corporationy. Games have become the fastest money maker in entertainment to date now. LOTTA money to be made in this industry. The greedy fuck headed toms have caught wind of the smell of video game cash. That sweet call of duty money. That sweet mmo money. That sweet micro transaction and dlc money. They want as MUCH as possible without putting up much effort to get it. That's why the fuck your games suck more than they did about 20 years ago.
That's because back then, Developers actually poured their hearts and souls into their work most of the time instead of just creating mindless shovelwear and graphical revamps of what they've already made. Yes, that still exists today. But, it's a little less apparent nowadays. Though you can find games that still have the hearts and souls of their developers in them. Games that looked as though they were painstakingly made. Though that era also had that, there was a bit more quality control too.

The only like really good JRPG’s from more modern day in my opinion is the Persona Games and NieR Automata, Unless you could count Zelda as a JRPG too since it is a rpg made in Japan because Breath of the Wild is amazing.
It's partly because games are so expensive to make now, actually. The developers still care just as much, but the money needs to come from somewhere, and the people who give the money often don't know much about or care much about games. They call the shots even though they have no idea what they're doing, and pull "mass appeal" from popular games, trying to jam mechanics it into places that they don't fit. They can also change stuff at the last minute, which I imagine wreaks havoc on development.
My new goal in life is to get a bunch of musicians and play this around a bonfire on the beach or in the desert.

This WAS a second version. Chrono Cross is the sequel to Chrono Trigger. If you want more of Chrono Cross there is a completely text based game about it that was released before this. If you want it I can give you the title for you to grab a rom of it.
@saleh al-ademi Update, the text based game that Chrono Cross morphed from is called Radical Dreamers. You can easily find a rom of it.
Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross are my favourite JRPGs. Both are masterpiecies.

No. I finished this game once and have never desired to play it again. With the exception of the soundtrack, I didn't like anything whatsoever about Chrono Cross. Chrono Trigger, on the other hand, I've completed between 6 and 10 times, I think, and I have barely played it compared to most of its fans. Chrono Cross has some awesome music, though. This song and that ending song are mind-blowing.

Well actually, if your like me and did originally purchase the game years ago when it came out, and for whatever reason lost the game over the years, I think downloading an emu and rom is fine. Also, I currently do not own PS3/PSP or Vita, and will not buy one for the sake of one game lol. I see your point though, and agree to some degree, just wanted to point that out is all ;)

I think he might be referring to the entire mission, infiltrating the reactor and blowing it up rather than just the opening cinematic. Granted it's still not action packed, but it's an opening that grabs you and pushes you along. FF8's cinematic was dramatic, but once it was over the game fired the drag shute and slowed to a crawl.

There are things called "Let's Play", which allow you to enjoy a video game without playing it, if gameplay is so boring to you. Secondly, any game can be boring if you play it wrong. I play the MGS series, for example, aiming for a No Kill/No Alert game every time, and it's satisfying to see that Big Boss rank at the end. Or Super Mario World, I speed-rush every exit with minimal Cape/Yoshi usage, just for fun's sake. That said, a good plot makes you care about why you are playing, not how.
Then you're missing out.
What could you possibly find so thrilling about a bonsai tree that MGS lacks? I assume you tried playing the first one, correct? Granted it's not the best game in the series, but it's necessary for the PLOT, which is by far the strongest selling point of the series. The story is fantastic. If you play games purely for gameplay, then you'll be unable to appreciate the true gems sitting at the top of a pile of rubbish.

I agree, but to my surprise there's a very good rendition by the VGO online (Video Game Orchestra) that does an extended version of it. Although they used a piccolo in the intro instead of the flute, I deeply suggest you hear it completely.It's well worth the time spent on it. :]

this is one of my favorite games of all time. Here in vegas they have a place called video game repairs, they sell this game new copies still wrapped for a round 40 bucks. Needless to say I own and play it to this day.

@damchovic I use Demonoid, Nyaa.eu, Tokyotosho and IPtorrents, but never for albums since they're so much quicker to get by just grabbing them from a free upload site. Piratebay is an assload more dangerous than these files.
@damchovic But can you find seeds for it? Every album I have gotten from MF/MU/4Shared/RS has been 100% fine. If it helps you can just scan it before opening.

I don't know why, but this song is the ONLY part of Chrono Cross that I don't like that much. I like the game, the story, the characters (all ~40 of them), the villains, the soundtrack (mostly), the battle system, the bosses, the dungeons (especially Chronopolis), but not this song. Well, not that much, it's still good.

This is an RPG that transcends gaming for me honestly, I play it like I would read a book. Introspective, witty, and most of all, epic beyond belief. Easily the best RPG I've ever played, both for its innovative combat system and PHENOMENAL story. (Plus the soundtrack is amazing, and can stand alone without the game to accompany it)

This is the best VGM song ever written... I love Nobuo Uematsu, and overall he's great, but Yasunori Mitsuda has him with this gem.

@turtledude7 Ummm no actually, i saw the theme song played live by an orchestra in my city, and it fucking rocked, it was so much more better and appreciative hearing it live, it does not sound clumsy or offbeat, i dont know what you listening too....but yeah unitl you hear it live don't say it's worse.

@wezzgy I played crono trigger and I absolutely love this game! Its story is much more complex and elaborate, and the large number of characters isn't usually a weakness. Its definitely an RPG masterpiece.

Yes! One of the greatest gaming tracks of all time for sure. The first time I heard this track, I really didn't know what had hit me. I had just bought the game, didn't know anything about it, and the first experience I had was this music. Probably reset the game a dozen times just so I could hear it again and again.

Underrated and misunderstood. It was years ahead of its time as far as the battle system was concerned. And I don't think the producers were trying to create a full Chrono 'sequel', but tell a sort of alternate story born of Chrono Triggers events.
We loved so many, and hated so much... We hurt others and were hurt ourselves.

here's the thing though: is masato kato gonna write the story? Is yasunori mitsuda gonna make the music? what about the rest of the development team, are they gonna be doing this? because I sure as hell don't want any of the current Square-Enix teams working on the next chrono game, not the Final Fantasy teams, not the SaGa team. Maybe Square Enix could make another dream team composed of maybe Masato Kato, Yasunori Mitsuda, maybe Akitoshi Kawazu and some Tri-Ace members.

the "supposed" 3rd game in the Chrono series, it was trademarked in 2001.....so you can see where that went lol but I did hear they MAY be making it finally ^_^

Garai? Lynx's physical attacks destroy him. Just make sure not to have 2 black innates in the party (No Harle). The party I used was Lynx/Starky/Radius. Make sure you have a couple of HealAlls and Curepluses to keep Lynx up and watch Garai fall.

Very fond memories with this game. I can remember the day I even bought it lol. Even though that was like 8 years ago it still amazes me. Chrono Cross/Trigger don't get the respect they deserve.

What i really liked is how the cast of chrono trigger made appearances (well some of them anyways) even though they were like no where in the game AT ALL for like the first half.
I did not care for Chrono Cross. Didn't like it. Chrono Trigger was better than it in every aspect EXCEPT this; Music. Both games are great for music. We need a true sequel. By true, I mean reuniting the cast of CT.

Or at least add two more songs: The Dream That Time Dreams and Dragon God. Those are two of my favorite songs from a fantastic album.

Ahhh yes, that was close to the end indeed! I remember having a bit of trouble with the Fire Dragon, don't remember why. :P
That boss was a crazy fake-out. I remember when you meet him the first timed and thinking that the Salamander was the fire dragon and then fighting him in a later act. First half of the battle was crazy easy....too easy. Then my Karsh, Lynx, and (I forget my third...) combo got demolished once he got swole.
It really saddens me that I never got to play this pearl.
Great song, I still remember the animation that went with it :D Though, I couldn't finish this one as a kid either :( Got stuck at a part where I had to find 7 dragons or something. I was so close to the end too :( (I think)
