Haven't had the pleasure of playing Chrono Cross, but now I'm sold!
I read that Mitsuda fought very hard for the opportunity to work on Chrono Trigger - basically gambling his game composing career on its success - and continued to work so tirelessly on the soundtrack that he began to develop ulcers and had other physical complications. I haven't heard similar stories from his time with Xenogears or Chrono Cross, so I have to assume that those were a little less stressful!
Honestly this is probably one of my least favorite songs on the soundtrack. There are so many masterpieces by Mitsuda, but this isn't one of them.
Will probably completionist beat this game sometime. Unlike some in the comments here, CC is one of my favorite JRPGs ever. Though part of me wants a remaster to release first.

Is it wrong that I have never played this game? I love Chrono Trigger to death, but even after I heard about this sequel I just never bothered to play it. It's so weird.

I agree. There wasn't much good about it other than the graphics and music, so it confuses me when people call it great. I know it's subjective and all that but there are so many better games out there :s.

I like how mysterious this sounds at some parts, but sad in other parts. A very good piece of soundtrack, as expected of Mitsuda.
This is a great piece. It really gives off the feeling that the walls have closed in around you, and there's no way out.
I forget when, but at some point he was composing under depression. This piece has a bit of a forlorn feeling to it.
Wasn't it during Chrono Trigger development when his HDD broke and he lost most of the work done ? I felt bad for him just by reading the story.

Its hard to pick a favorite video game composer but if was forced to choose it would be Mitsuda.
Mine is Nobuo Uematsu. I think Final Fantasy wouldn't be as famous without him. And the games after he left were pretty much universally panned.
As much as I don't care for most FF games post IX, he left after X and neither XII or XIII have been universally panned. XII got perfect scores and XIII got near perfect scores from critics. From fans, XII is a 70/30 split while XIII is very 50/50. The only FF game anywhere close to being universally panned is FFII. Nearly every FF game, spin off or otherwise has gotten mixed reviews at worst beside all the bravest which is a scam and not a game.
I don't remember ever reading a bad review of FF4, 6, and 7. At least not when they originally came out.
Even if Mitsuda's work is constantly great, he really hit 3 homeruns at the start of his composing career with Chrono Trigger, Xenogears and Chrono Cross. He was only 27 years old when he composed this soundtrack. It's nothing short of genius, really. I love the mood in this one, you can almost feel the volcanic heat during the intro.

Not yet. Though to be fair he's uploaded over a third of that game's soundtrack with it being the most recurring game on the list likely since if video game soundtracks could platinum that one would've 18 times over with virtually no weak parts.

It should be said that the making of these soundtracks is literally one of blood sweat and tears. Mitsuda went up going to the hospital several times during the composing of both Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, due to exhaustion. He put his everything in those three. And it really, really shows.
+Master Henks Also, Chrono Trigger was his first soundtrack, which is even more impressive.
