Never played the game before, got a glimpse of it a little but I was probably a little less than 10 years old. I'm 23 now. But I will never the soundtracks that I deliberately repeated over and over as I played Zelda (because I don't like their 8-bit soundtrack back then lol). I lost the files and back then we didn't have Internet on our computer since it was kind of luxurious. Now that I have fiber optic connection at home, I come back for their songs every now and then. I love the sound of the fingers against the guitar's nylon, the clear picks of every melody, the chords they used, and the simple melodies that are played on the piano. It's just pure instrumental music.

This game may have been a bit worse than Chrono Trigger, but Cross wins by a long shot in the music department.

I prefer Cross than Trigger too. Just one thing that really annoyed me on Chrono Cross is the character design. Many of them are... too funny.
+xOmniCloudx Agreed, I'm one of the few that likes Cross more than Trigger. As its been said many times before, the hype of Trigger was just too much for Cross to live up to, but by all means, it may not be a great CHRONO game, but it's still one hell of a classic RPG!

Fellow Cross fan here. I've tried my best to love Trigger. I've played through a lot of it, never finished it. I just grow bored of it and quit. I am glad I played Cross first.
How many actually playable characters had Chrono Cross actually ? 30 ? I remember that they are a lot of them, but I think it was more like quantity over quality in character depth and such D:

Yasunori Mitsuda! I love this man's work! His masterpiece of a score to Xenogears holds a very special place in my heart. Hell, all his scores do. : )
chrono soundtrack ftw
This is my all-time favorite game. However, I can see why it would be a disappointment to Trigger fans as the game definitely has a much different feel from that game.
Interesting. FF games are released in sequential order: FF 1, then FF 2 all the way through 14, yet each world is unique and players expect a different experience with each game. Chrono Cross is not a numbered sequel, as in Chrono Trigger 2, yet everyone compares them even though the two are radically different. The battle system, the narrative direction, the ambience, and oh my god, the music! CC may not have the most epic battle music, but this is the most relaxing piece of VGM I've ever heard:)
Chrono Cross is far from my favorite game of all time, but it is my favorite soundtrack of all time. I've expressed it to my gamer friends and associates as well, and challenged them to give me a better soundtrack. They've never been able to. Maybe for them some other soundtrack is better, but for me personally, it does not get any better than this. It's so good that I don't know enough words to express how good it is.
I absolutely have to get around to this series one day. Classic games are even harder to check off the list than classic books or movies, just because they're all RPGs

I had a good time playing it as a kid, even if I didn't know what was going on most of the time. Kinda don't want to play it again to keep the good memories unchanged.
I doubt I have listened to any OST more than this one. As an overall soundtrack, this has got to have the most spirit behind it. Now, I am biased as Chrono Cross is in my top 3 games of all time, but the music has to be some of the most passionate work for any game. Even with all the praise it gets, this OST is still underrated.
This is one of the OSTs I'd definitely love to listen to in its entirety every now and then. Quite possibly my favorite video game soundtrack :)
Agreed. I can listen to so many tracks form that score over and over again. The battle theme is not my favorite at all, but listening to the score, you can skip that track, and then you have perfection.

I never understood how a game like this would have near 10/10s rated across the board, yet was absolutely scorned by some fans. But after hearing the theories and proof of its connections to Chrono Trigger, I can now see why. It's a shame. If Square hadn't given it the Chrono series title and instead something else, this game would most definitely not be so hatefully remembered.

Well, to be fair, what happened to the main characters of the better game was horrible.
@Marinanor the term better is subjective.And did you expect them to live forever just because they saved the world?If you think that scene were Luca's house is on fire means they died on a fire they didn't.It is not shown what happens to them on Cross.

Probably the best game I was disappointed with. My expectations following the masterpiece that was Chrono Trigger were simply too high and probably clouded my judgement at the time. It's a big reason why I'll have to replay it someday and give it a better chance. I did like the game, just not as much as many. It's funny how such a top notch soundtrack ended up having one of my least favorite battle themes in an RPG.
Final Fantasy VII, this is not.

I love the music from this game. Mitsuda did an amazing job with the soundtrack for this game. I'm still waiting for a few songs to be uploaded to this list, but I know it will be a matter of time before you upload them.
I always feel sorry for devs who have a hard act to follow
@electricmastro You're right. Chrono Cross is a better game and has a better soundtrack than Final Fantasy VII.
@electricmastro FF7 wish it has an OST as good as this game did. Years later, and i still don't understand all the hype behind FF7, and ive played all FFs besides 1-3...
I'm surprised. I love the battle theme for this game because it takes such a weird ensemble of instruments into action. You have a crazy violin with bass and an offset drum with a electric piano going crazy. Really gives the feel that fighting is hectic and a huge contrast from the exploration music the world gives.
@allthatishere 3 is worth a play — The updated version at least.

This soundtrack is one of the strongest I think I've ever heard from a videogame, but I do agree. It wasn't the game I expected or quite wanted. Good, but not so amazing as some think. (At least in my book.)
@drunyon214 I have to respectfully disagree with the fact that this game has a better soundtrack than FF VII. I will give that the sound quality for this soundtrack is much better, but I honestly think that this soundtrack is too light-hearted in some places. Plus, Mitsuda was still developing his sound since his first big gig as a composer came 5 years prior to making this soundtrack. Still a good soundtrack though.

I think CC's soundtrack was lighthearted where it demanded (such as Another Termina, a bustling port town), and somber when it demanded (such as the Dead Sea or the battle with Miguel theme, Prisoners of Fate). I can't think of a single tune that didn't fit its location perfectly. The music really embodied the "sailing around tropical islands" theme of the game, which is why it's supposed to be lighthearted at times, but it can still tug at your heartstrings in the right places, like in the good ending. The music in this game had such a unique feel and unique instruments, something no other game has really had. This was the first game that really got me to notice video game music. FF7 had great music too, don't get me wrong, but there are so many more memorable songs in Chrono Cross! It's hard to think of a single tune in this game that wasn't spectacular. The music is just so vibrant and well composed. And that's just some of the reasons why Chrono Cross has the greatest soundtrack of all time.
@***** One thing Uematsu unquestionably beats Mitsuda on is his fight music. Mitsuda is amazing, but he's hit or miss with battle tunes.
@***** You may not like Gale (the normal battle theme), but you have to admit that the other four battle themes (Between Life and Death, Prisoner of Fate, Fate - The God of Destiny, and Dragon God) are fantastic, right?
@***** I'm sure some people didn't like it. That doesn't mean it's going to be changed tho. And why would that have been the case anyways? Just because you complain about something, doesn't mean its going to be changed. Look at all the people that complained about the FF13 series.
I didn't mind the normal battle theme. It wasn't a tune I loved or would listen to apart from the game, unlike almost every other theme in the game... so yeah, by that reasoning, it's arguably the worst song in the game. But I didn't dislike it either; the battle theme never bothered me.
@***** Wow, you didn't play a game because of one song? Thats a first for me see someone say. Thats almost as shallow as the, "This game has bad graphics so it sucks" argument i see so common nowadays.
@drunyon214 Yeah. It may have been a good song, but it wasn't a good Chrono Cross song, which can actually sum up my thoughts about entire games (Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter, for example).
+SupraDarky If only they hadn't ditched the ATB system that square had perfected so well, the game would have been a lot easier to get through. Oh and changing the regular exp system for some bullshit leveling up system did not help either. To make matters worse they had this trend since Xenogears and continued with in future games. Why fix what isn't broken? why do the japanese hate the ATB system, why?
+allthatishere while the remake is more approachable and they did a good job with the soundtrack, i felt the 3d graphics were muddy and didn't do the game justice. I think really good 8bit graphics are better than meh 3D. If you can stomach it, i recommend playing the original one day.
I think I had the benefit of only KNOWING CT when I played CC. I went back and played it on PS1 in a collection with FFVI I purchased one year. I agree that it's one of the worst battle themes. Not because the instrumentation, I just it's all over the place, and It's a song that you do have to hear a LOT. I do not think it would've been as jarring had it been a once in a while fight theme/specific boss battle, or something like that. Aside form that battle theme, I think CC has one of the best soundtracks of all time. I come back to it time and time again. The other tracks are just that good. Especially when paired with some of the great locations that exist in that game.
