Better game than Chrono Trigger. Fight me. Yeah, it's not a good as a sequel but as a standalone in comparison to Trigger? This game is much deeper and more thought provoking. You have to really suspend your disbelief in Trigger as it was going for a more comedic tone, whereas Cross was a lot more serious and took itself more seriously.

Music and games of the 1990s were the best, even if the graphics were still elementary. You can tell that most games during those times had a heart and soul in many aspects, game itself to the music. Not like the games of today....pure shameless money grabs. Specifically looking at Mobile games to be exact....but I mean there are exceptions like Breath Of the Wild, Nier Automata, and a rather good amount of other games. But the feeling of 90s games can never be matched by today's games.

I got a lot of homework done with this song during high school and college. It's awesome to study during the winter with this song on. I had to drive through 4 mountains to get to my college, so it snowed a lot during the winter. The string instruments of this song with the dead winter snow fall, allowed me to concentrate through tough exams and helped me came to many realizations about life.
This and 'Flight' from Xenogears pretty much sum up my current musical sensibilities. Yeah.

I come from megadrive/genesis, had a "fat" ps1, and later, I bought a ps2, ps3 and now ps4. Furthermore had other consoles like gameboy, gbcolor and advance. But even if I didnt play this when came out, I played a while ago, and, now, there are not games like that generation had. Its sad, but true. Another times, another sensations. Final fantasy saga in ps1, chrono trigger and chrono cross, resident evil... those talented developers had gone/lost.

An underrated title overshadowed by a game many consider the king of jrpgs (though it is not mine it is still definitely one of the best) One thing that truly makes chrono cross stand on it's own is having one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. It is a prime example of one of the few qualities square still maintains to this day. Amazing music.

Chrono Cross is a highly underrated RPG, although it's not as good as Chrono Trigger, it's one of the best RPGs I have experienced in my life, I really wanted to see Schala again after CT and this game did it perfectly!

@GacktSe7en It didn't even do that right though. It shows them as like 4 year olds when they were older than Serge. But to be fair it is indeed not a sequel it is a basicially a Radical Dreamers remake which was a sequel but again not really a sequel.
@SkyExplosion well that's because the kids was the dimension where Serge survived and Chrono and them died young, and the other dimension where Serge died was the dimension of Chrono Trigger's game. At the end of Chrono Trigger Lynx went and killed them after the end of the game of Chrono Trigger. And the Lynx that killed Chrono and them was the one from Serge's world, the corrupted one.
GacktSe7en no, Lynx only (probably) killed Lucca. Crono and Marle became king and queen, if anything they die in the Guardia/ Porre war that Dalton (likely) started. one thing the chrono series does not deal in is absolutes.
@Woozy After Crono and Marle got married they later opened an orphanage and during that time Lynx came and killed them after burning down the orphanage. Kid was the only survivor of course because Serge saved her. I don't remember where but in the game it showed Glenn's story and it connects with Frogs too. Etc

I think it was a function of graphical capabilities and limitations. Graphics had gotten to the point where you could convey an immersive 3D world but not yet anything like movie CGI. Developers used this as a jumping off point for pure creative representation, a bit like impressionist artwork. Once "reality" came within the grasp, the goal driven by audiences, developers or both switched to a very much mistaken idea of realism.
+Albatrosspro Limitations breed innovations. Look at George Lucas. When his work was limited, he made a masterpiece. The moment those limitations were broken, he began to systematically destroy his own creation. Few people can make something truly great, even with all the time and money in the world at their fingertips. Look at where Star Wars is now. Disney own the rights, and with 1 movie, they managed to do what George Lucas couldn't with 3 prequels, and 3 edited originals.

Stop pretending that there was no market-driven JRPG formula back in the '90s. As there are FPS (etc.) formulas now, there were certainly archetypes for JRPGs at the time; instead, try acknowledging that you just like your favourite formulas more than others, and try rationalising that in a way that doesn't involve pretending that they weren't formulas. :V

While yes, turn-based RPG has long been an archetype, one thing that was not part of their main priority was perfect graphics, and the game focus mainly being on combat (of whatever type). This allowed for more creativity to be given to the game in other areas such as plot and musical score. The devs could insert more of what they envision the game to be, instead of what their company envisions it to be. Their company is, of course, most concerned with making the most amount of money off their game, and adjusts the "formula" as necessary to do so. In today's market and formula, the devs spend most of their time on graphics, animation and the action within the game. Ive seen many old games, with horrible graphics and animations (even for the year it was created), but incredible plots, and music that matches the emotion of the plot or scene. You don't see this in today's archetype. Today you mostly see incredible graphics and animations, but cheesy, rehashed plot and composition. That not only applies to RPG's but virtually every game genre. ~~Thats why a lot of these old VGMs like this are precious and revisited long after one stops playing its game, even in the PS2/Xbox era. The track itself actually meant something; had its own feel within the scene or area that it plays in. A feel that one can only understand by being there and experiencing it. This also holds true for those same JRPGS. Final Fantasies, as an example: Compare FF4-9 to FF13 and 14, and the shift in the archetype becomes apparent.; not that 13 and 14 aren't good games with their own positive qualities. MMO's are another example: Compare pretty much any MMO 10-12 years ago, to what it is today. Its simply the shift in generations, and the advancements in technology that created that shift. The majority of the new generation of gamers WANT those perfect graphics and combat, over story and music; that's what they grew up playing. Thus as a business, game companies have to change their formulas and adapt to this in order to compete, or die off. An example of this is Konami. A lot of geniuses from the 90s era, such as the creator of Castlevania, the creator of Megaman, the creator of Metal Gear Solid. All of them have left Konami to develop games on their own...because Konami doesn't want to publish that old archetype anymore. (You can look this up yourself).

Both of these statements are false. Everything, and I mean everything is made with Profits in mind. Even games such as Journey and Flower were made with some amount of profit margin they wanted. The difference is that there are just more games nowadays that milk their series (Ex. CoD, Assassins Creed). However there are still dozens of dozens of games that come out full of passion, and you don't even have to look so hard for them. Overwatch, Last of Us, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, The Witcher, Even the new Call of Duty game coming out is being made after a lot of WW2 research. But none of these games are being made without profits in mind. Even a game full of passion can still be made for profit.

Mitsuda said that he worked so much on the music day and night he fell asleep working on tracks. He said when he fell asleep he could hear the music he wanted to write in his dreams and woke up and continued to compose the music he heard in his dreams! Thats one of the most epic and inspiring things Ive ever read about.
He is music, music is him. Two become one. This is the hardest level to achieve, and I can say every artist will jealous this man because you gotta push yourself to the limit, sacrifice time, health, souls, emotions, all these thing you must need to pay.
This song makes me happy and sad simultaneously. I never played the game, but the song itself has a nostalgic vibe to it. It feels like you remember the past, being anxious and sad that time goes on. But at the same time you think you can reach this blissfullness again if you give the future a chance and leave behind the past, secretly knowing probably non of it will happen, but that's ok, because you can still remember. Mh, yep I sure have complicated feelings, nearly went into story writing, so I cut it off. xD Apparently the song also supports creativity.

Chrono Cross's soundtrack is done by Yasunori Mitsuda. He did the soundtrack of Chrono Trigger together with Nobuo and an other composer, so you're not entirely incorrect in hearing Nobuo Uematsu in this.
Another beautiful PS1 RPG. It really is one of the best games out there, especially in terms of replay ability and character storylines.

I think the overwhelming majority of modern games are terrible, but that was true of the past too. The angry video game nerd has a whole channel filled with bad games of the past. Not every game is going to be a masterpiece like Chrono Cross. I agree that there are some good modern games. I just wish they weren't so rare.
While I feel that older games are still better than modern, you can;t deny the experiecne games like Uncharted, Batman Arkham City, Assassin's Creed, etc, give you, and their level of quality, music, gameplay, and fun

You see, it's the fact that everyone walks into something (be it games or something else) with a comparison in mind. There's always a bar to set, and apparently it's always high, *especially* when it comes to sequels of great games. How to fix the issue? Well, everyone can enjoy a lot more things much better if *we all stopped comparing one thing to another*. That way, you can leave the nostalgia, bias, and judgement at the door and simply walk in with who you are and leave with an honest opinion. But this world isn't perfect, nonetheless.

And i like looking at the character i have equipped while i run on that O&S over and over again :P. I've never played king's field games (never even heard of) but some less combat heavy games like Planescape: Torment would work damn well in first person.

Same here. My favorite games are still from the 90s, but there are great newer games too. The Witcher 3 and Zelda BotW are two examples.

Modern games are generally worse than older games.
Get your facts right. Mitsuda wrote songs for both games, except in Chrono Trigger, Uematsu composed a couple of tracks to finish soundtrack for the game, because Mitsuda wasn't able to do that, he got because peptic ulcer disease.
Even now, with games like Persona 5, Yakuza 0, Nier Automata ect.
My problem with modern games is that they often seem to underestimate the power of a melodic soundtrack. They seem to mostly rely on "ambience" and have a few notes play here and there, more or less. I am not a fan of that kind of music, I want actual melodies. The track in this video is a great example of a track like that, and I hope that I will eventually find some modern game with the same kind of powerful music. Another example of a game with powerful music is the snowboarding game SSX3, especially the track "Clockworks", which reminds me a lot of Offspring.

What makes me mad about square-enix is that their "low budget/side projects" games (developed or publised) are pretty awesome, but they either have no marketing or are only released in Japan. On the last couple years they had Nier (that soundtrack), FF type-0 (which is amazing), Star Ocean (not bad), Dissidia, Bravery Default, Remake of Dragon Quest VII, The 3rd Birthday, And there is also some of the western games they published like Deus EX HR, Sleeping Dogs and Tomb Raider, though not RPGs

Well, the problem isn't greed or fear of taking risks. The problem is that they refuse to do another Chrono game unless all the original people involved are on board. And, at this point in the game, it's difficult to get all those people together since they're all working on different projects.

Agree, at that time, chances are it being one of the finest RPGs ever, but now it would have the same chances at being flushed down the toilet first. It's like SquareEnix only cares about making fast money, not caring about gamers at all. Remember that time when they actually put thought in plot, story and characters and spiced it up with beautiful scenaries and mind blowing music? Ah the good ol' days... hopefully some day, we'll be seeing it again. Hopefully.
I totally agree with you.. actually IF and only if a sequel to Chrono cross/trigger came out say, 5-6 years ago it would have been perfect.. lately SquareEnix has gone to sht so.. even if they DID make a sequel/remake now there's high chance it'll suck. Maybe it's a good thing that happened, I mean look at Kingdom Hearts, it was amazing, but now it just feels... off. Like someone else said, they feel spinoffy. Look it on the bright side, at least the Chrono Saga had its moment of glory and can still bask in it without fear of being marked by a shitty version with the same title. Yeah, I guess you do have a point. I'm just saying that we have more people in this country that appreciate other series that aren't RPGs. And seriously, Elder Scrolls and all of those type of games do not seriously register as an RPG. The way that we are now, we wouldn't even pay any attention to the games that they would create.
The PS2 had more RPGs than FPSs, who was the one that left that market open for Western RPGs and FPSs took over during the PS3 era? There's HARDLY any RPGs released stateside or Europe so peoples taste in games changed, they think that they have to westernize their games for it to sell but they should be making games that rely on the JRPG strengths and use a open world structure. The lack of localization of Namco Tales Series but not Tekken boggles me to this day!
Pretty much, I was referring to the second option. I think that Japan backs off from giving Westerners JRPGs because if you look at the way we are, it seems as though we care about nothing but first person shooters. If you see that, then why waste your time making a game for a country that's not even going to buy it? I think that's what goes through their minds when the create a game.

After playing FFXIII and hating EVERY MINUTE OF IT will have to say that I've been disappointed with SquareEnix since Star Ocean Last Hope was released and the continuous lack of KH3 but kept releasing spinoffs, prequels and remakes Resonance of Fate and Valkyria Chronicles are in my opinion probably the best JRPGs I've played this generation but so few have been released stateside that I ended up having to contend with western RPGs, its just not the same I also ended up loving FPSs,
The J-rpgs of the 90's kill any and all Scrolls game forever. Even Dragon's Dogma and Dark Souls are better then the Scrolls games.

Amazing how much nostalgia washes over you when you hear a song from a long time ago. I was there, back in 2000, when this game was first released. The Summer of Adventure, when Square Enix was still Squaresoft, a then-glorious age of gaming. I can never have those blissful summer days back, traveling alongside heroes on an amazing journey. I learned to let go of a brief hatred I had for Lynx too. Chrono Cross, thank you for all the wonderful hours.

I'm sure Yasunori was at it's finest in this game, I played and liked Xenogears, but the soundtrack wasn't even half as good as this one IMO, the battle themes are sorta slow and not as memorable as this one, but it's still good.

@CaribDevist It depends on what you like really, and what genre your talking about. Its feeling like there is much less variety in the RPG as most games are action/sandbox based lately. FPS style games however have exploded, tons of options meaning lots of great games (and lots of flops)

Plenty of good games out there these days, but if as you get older you look at games differently. Having said that, I was really impressed with the soundtrack for FF13-2, it has some very good tracks on it that fit the story well (IMO). Having said THAT,chrono cross OST is still my favourite of all time. I have some of the titles on my IPOD right now and still listen to them regularly :)

@1992KevN I never completed this game because I didn't care much for the game. The battle system is awesome, but I didn't really like the characters in the game. However, this game probably has the best soundtrack out of any game I've ever played. Every area of this game is just one awesome tune after another.

@GoldenPubes I can see where you are coming from. The problem is though is that when developers make a follow up to a game as big of a hit as CT then they really can't win. If they stray too far from the original like perhaps CC than the fans moan it is too different, but if they make it too similar it gets classed as being the same old lazy shit. I thought the tie in to CT was very well handled, it didn't go overboard with it but it also didn't announce it was a direct sequel.
If this is the world map theme, i would never leave the map again to enter a dungeon.

I guess some of the things you loved about it are some of the reasons I was a little disappointed- I actually disliked the loads of characters, because I felt like it really took away from character development that I really enjoyed in CT. It just really bothered me that they tried to tie CC into CT, and I think that's what really left a bad taste in my mouth. Even though I say I was disappointed, I still own the game and played it through several times. Cheers!
@GoldenPubes I've completed both CC and CT many times and I prefer CC. I have also played plenty of RPGs over the years so must know something myself. CC has plenty of replay value, multiple endings, loads of characters to collect and items to make. I would say CT has more but CC has more than most. It is a stunning game that is foolishly hidden in the shadow of CT by journalists and 'experts'.

I made that point because a comment was made about Chrono Trigger being a "kiddie" game and labeling it as trash, which is ridiculous. @MaxyAngel01 Learn to spell kid. Even though I wasn't crazy about Chrono Cross I still played it through 3-4 times. You must not have played many RPG's if you think so highly of CC - it was a solid game but simply didn't have the replay value that other squaresoft games had. CT is widely considered to be one of the best RPG's of all time, and honestly it completely blows CC out of the water. Sounds like you need to actually play some other RPG's instead of talking out of your ass.

I personally played this game first before playing the original Chrono Trigger. After playing both I found that the only thing that remotely linked Trigger to Cross was the princess and Kid characters. Even then to me it was far fetched because one was about dealing with time travel and different endings (which is the more popular mechanic with the series fans imho) and the separation of the world itself into two halves. So imo each game was great in their own right.
Chrono Cross was such a disappointment for me... Great soundtrack but really poor storyline and mediocre gameplay. Chrono Trigger still stands as my favorite game, and this was such a letdown. I really wish they didn't try to tie it in with CT - maybe I would have enjoyed it more if Square had made it a completely separate game

@plebman182 I heard Europe was left out in the cold when the game launched in 1995, but was given a chance when the DS port arrived. Hopefully, Square Enix will do the same if it hits PSN, or at least a port for the 3DS or Vita.

It's funny how each of these songs can be reflected a past experience in life endured by everyone who has played Chrono Cross. Yasunori Mitsuda's music has that kind of effect on people, And what a positive effect that is!!

this is without question the best game I have EVER played. Everything about the game was so deep and rich with emotion, from the amazing story line, to all the wonderfully orchestrated musical scores, and especially all the heart-loved characters. This was an adventure like no other, even amongst video games. If there was ever a game that could get inside you and make you feel the moment, it was this one. Chrono Cross, you will be missed. :)

@MahamudSamatar You can buy a brand-new still wrapped copy off of Amazon for about $20. I'm not spamming you. I had to go through 3 copies of this game to finally finish it (Damn PS1 discs scratch easily) and when it kept freezing at a certain scene, I was glad it was so cheap at amazon. You wouldn't' have the same luck with FF7 or Xenogears... Even though I was disappointed by second disc, I'd say it's worth a place through.
@MahamudSamatar you're missing more about the storyline and ambiance than actually gameplay, which was ok-to-good. When i look at pictures of a tropical island, i think about this game...

Dear Square Enix. Normally I'd ask you to make more games that aren't Final Fantasy. But don't touch the Chrono series. This game is perfect and wonderful and anything you do couldn't possibly make it any more beautiful and effective than it already is.

@jomon324 its natural to be sad when hearing this. its also a fond sign of a game though old, still lives in our hearts. to briefly summarize this song, it plays in the alternate version of your world, where the protagonist, Serge, died when he was young. so you walk around your hometown and no one knows you, but they all knew serge, and his death affected them all heavily.
@MrBlank8 Had similar experience with chrono trigger, while I was young and my cousins wouldn't allow me to play ps2 or PC, I used to go in a room, alone, with that old dusty ps1 to play chrono trigger on my own, till they see me enjoying my self and tell me to get off cause they want to play with the ps1.

This game was SO awesome at the time. Final Fantasy VII had all the JRPGs and a lot of games in general all gray and muted, just sadly fucking emo really. THEN BOOM! The music was upbeat and magical, the landscape was colorful, all the characters were vibrant and alive. One of the best stories I've ever seen / heard / read / have been a part of.

@iluvgum753 As for remembering the same exactly part when listening to music, that happens for me with Final Fantasy (1) music. I played that game sooooooo much! Since I grew up on that game I love it more than the other Final Fantasy's though I know the other ones have more to love, more story/plot, and better game play.

@snaredrums123 I was in the EXACT same position as you! Thankfully, I have beaten both games and I am proud to say I own Chrono Cross. Chrono Trigger and Cross are probably in my Top 5 of favourite games of all time! However, I have one thing to tell you. Go into Chrono Cross without the intention of playing a direct sequel to Chrono Trigger. It is NOT a direct sequel to Trigger. It just happens to be in the same world, so there are references. Also, be really patient with Chrono Cross.

I've listened to this soundtrack countless times. And I've never played the game. I'm actually playing through Trigger for the first time, that way I can go into Cross understanding all of the backstory. And I am having an absolute BLAST with Trigger. All of the characters are incredibly memorable, I love the visuals, and the battle system is absolutely boss. I'm actually starting to see why so many people say they had high expectations for Cross, but I'll have to see for myself :)

I'd often turn on my PSOne and do homework/housework/read just using the system on my little TV as a great background music. When I took meditation classes in high school, downloaded the soundtrack and used the "other Guldove" music to meditate to.

@RedNightron I actually never played the game to the end. Reason: every time I turned it on, I was on the world map, and that song was playing. I would sit down and walk around aimlessly, just listening. I didn't want to go and enter into battle, leaving that peaceful and out-of-the-world feeling. I should have played the game, thou. ;(

I still love this game so much. I'm still playing it today. I always have to stop and marvel and how amazing the music it and how it always seems to speak to me.
I still have the game somewhere in my cabinet somewhere and I remember just playing it for the first time and wow it's so amazing how one game that branched off chrono trigger would get everyone back to the chrono games.

This is one of the 3 songs on this earth that makes me cry for no reason at all.
It's bad when Video Game music is so much better than what the actually Music industry puts out these days....but to be honest, it's hard to pick even the good music that comes out today over this. Like, I could literally fill my iPod with only video game music from the NES up to the PS2 and listen to them for the rest of my life. And video games aren't art? Bullshit. This games soundtrack alone proves that wrong.
Yasunori Mitsuda is a musical genius. Call me Judas for saying it but I still think the stuff he came up with was the best Squaresoft had to offer.

@felipe95951 It's... different. You don't even need to have played the prequel to get stuff. You just notice a few extra things and freak out for a brief moment about them. The plot is still very engaging, the artwork and backgrounds are gorgeous, and the music is simply amazing. The characters are also pretty dang memorable. Which means a lot considering the number. It's worth a try. And considering it's an RPG, which takes hours upon hours to complete, it says a lot that I would recommend it.

I remember when I was about 12yrs old and we just moved in my familys new home, I remeber playing this game by myself when my brother and parents were out doing their own thing. This game was like my friend and I can always tear and cry my heart out of how peaceful and how graceful this game was to me. I remember playing from morning to night trying to figure out what to do. I would always cry because nobody was with me to play or enjoy with it, It hurt but I kept going on. :)

I remember I got it for my birthday when it was on greatest hits (Left it in the case without playing it for 5 years and I never knew why I didn't play it). Then I tried it one day and I loved it. Should of played it from the time I got it. The only ps one game I have without scratches lol.

@SwiitchStyles This was released on the psn in japan only along with so many other rpgs, Still waiting for this and Legend of Dragoon. And parasite eve 2 which was supposed to be spring 2011 and that's supposed to be over the next week.

@Akonkid No offence or anything but there are great JRPGs created all the time. We can all keep looking to the past with tears in our eyes but we also should face the reality. Look beyond the Square Enix fad and you get a whole new world in front of you. Shadow Hearts: Covenant is one of the best JRPGs I've ever experienced and it was released in 2004. Lost Odyssey was pretty good but still I'd say it's definitely not going to be the last great JRPG we're gonna get.

chrono cross kills trigger, i played cross first and afterwards i couldnt play trigger it was so blind and shitty... but cross makes you feel like youve warped into another world and like you've really met the characters. theyre all so different, and the places/monsters are different...this game is my favorite game of all time, not even anything from ps3 can beat this. sad that they dont create these games anymore...
@Akonkid If you want to know what Final Fantasy 12 was originally supposed to be like play Vagrant Story, and no Squenix won't fix it, because they didn't want it to be like Vagrant Story (and I mean tone/style/story). They wanted it to be more like Final Fantasy X. Xenogears was made by Square people who no longer work with Square. The issue isn't the games aren't there, it's that the market isn't there. Get a Wii or DS if you like the style, but don't care about the quality. JRPG's are dead.
@Akonkid Takashi Tokita who directed Chrono Trigger and Parasite Eve...also made the Bouncer. Enough said. Dragon Quest X will be a Wii exclusive...so no real gamer will be playing it. Valkyrie Profile 2 wasn't bad, but it lacked what the first one had, and Tri-Ace is too busy running Star Ocean into the ground anyways.
@Akonkid Well lets see... Masato Kato, the mastermind behind Chrono Cross left Square after FFXI, he's been writing for some smaller titles for the DS games that don't do well outside japan. Final Fantasy has been handed down to concept artists and it's really hard to place what exactly went wrong in the series. Legend of the Dragoon was made internally by Sony by what appears to be a mismatch from everyone in the Japan branch...hell there were people from Gran Turismo in on it.

I still remember, when the first time i heard this song in the game, that was also the last time I played through the storyline, that was because I found a strange wordless peaceful & blissful feeling in this melody, I was never able to moving on and I don't wanted to ever finished the game story, because I was afraid that if I known the ending, that would be the ending to those incredible feelings too, I want this melody to last forever in my heart, so the feeling could last forever too. for4..

X i thought had an innovative level (Sphere grid) system and combat system. But i agree, there's very few good RPGs anymore...I REALLY wish they hadn't botched Third Birthday.....

@Mugetsui i have a lot of rpg's with multiple discs (or ISO files) and that's the way to go through them. the emulator that i have is a PSXfin but i don't see that the epsxe will be any different.

@Mugetsui go to "File" and choose "eject cd". this will make the emulator think that you opened the system and extracted the cd. now go to "File" again and choose "insert CD Image" and search for the Disc2 file of the game. now you can continue the game. *NOTE* if you are saving the game with Freeze Files, the file will be on the Disc1 save folder because you were still playing on the disc1 emulator screen so make sure after you close the emulator to move the save file to the Disc2 save folder.

@Akonkid I agree with you man. Nowadays stories are very predictable and unoriginal. The first time I played FF7, which was about two years ago, blew my mind because I didn't expect the unexpected. Plus FFS are getting all the attention these days...

Last thing I wish to comment on is how this is one of the best rpg's that were never played. Many people who know Chrono Trigger have no clue whatsoever even about the existence of this game unless the first time they played CT (like me) was on the psx FF Chronicles disc. Needless to say, if you support this game, instead of professing how much of an RPG expert you are, spread it around where you can. This is a MUST play game and is one that will forever be remembered, and not forgotten.
@MissPiddelin The entire mood of this RPG is one of nostalgia. I want to comment on the fact that this is a direct sequel to Chrono Trigger, yet again, is its own rpg, a brand new combat system (which has plenty of depth) a brand new twist to the series and aspects of Space/Time travel, with a plethora of unique and cool characters. Some are strange and there isn't a lot of background, but others you get the full blown story or description of their history.
@MissPiddelin While noux22 might not be the most literate supporter of this game, I for one agree with him that it is the greatest rpg of all time. In my opinion it was a step up from Chrono Trigger in every single way, but a unique game in its own right. I have never been more moved by a soundtrack in any game, let alone the various situations and predicaments each character faces. This effect fully hits you when you see in both worlds nothing is ever perfect.

The PSX generation of RPGs were beyond amazing. Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy VII-FFIX, Legend of the Dragoon, Parasite Eve, Dragon Quest VII, Valkyrie Profile, Vagrant Story, Xenogears... What happened to all those amazing games? New, daring, and exciting original stories? Where are the games with stories and characters that actually tug at your heartstrings and let their stories and gameplay shine? The last great RPG for me was Lost Odyssey.

@RichterBelmontITA Well you know now that they have the graphics on point I don't think it would be to much to ask them to concentrate a little more on the story at this point. I mean look at it this way: back when the story was awesome the graphics were top notch for their time. I just think the folks have become a bit lazy or its just so much work to do all the graphics. With that in mind, a good RPG may take more than a couple years to perfect. Can you wait? I think I could.

Ah i love this game. Still have and the original Playstation working, playing it right now. And to tell you the truth back when games didnt have great graphics the storyline was AMAZING like in the Chrono series. Such an amazing game!

I really need to finish this game, I beat trigger several times but each time I try to get back into cross the freakin battle system throws me off, I havn't played many modern rpgs so I don't have any clue how those systems work. But I still am impressed with cross of what I've played of it so far.
Never played this game, but if this isn't one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard... well then I don't know what is. Almost worth playing this game just to know that I will hear this eventually.

I remember buying this soundtrack before the game came out. Figured I would want it, and that turned out to be an understatement. I remember this one for being absolutely stand-out, but also because this was the one song on my discs that had a slight skip. Funny...I still can pinpoint the exact point where it would skip, even if I haven't heard it do that in so long.
I love this game so much along with the Dark Cloud series... When I listen to this, it takes me to my calm utopia. A beautiful sunset on a hill near some type of beautiful looking church, with the mild breeze of the wind, reflecting on my thoughts, I wish it'd be like that forever.

It evokes a feeling of a far-off paradise, one that you know you can never return to but that you still can't let go of, because it represents the most cherished part of you. The song is more powerful the older the game gets, because you feel the joy of your childhood slipping further and further away...

One of my most favorite RPG tracks of all time. Love how the assumingly "cheerful" and "free" song envelops such a sad, crying violin longing for comfort and a way out. Such duality. I'm grateful I grew up playing Squaresoft games of that era, for it'll never be the same again.

I honestly think almost every singly song on the OST for Chrono Cross could be on this list. IMO, one of the best, if not the best, video game soundtrack ever made. (Hyperbole much?). Seriously though, a brilliant achievement in video game music. I really wish Yasunori Mitsuda was a more highly regarded video game composer. I mean, I know he is highly respected. But he should be in the top 5 list of anyones favorite VG composers.

@TheSlickAndroid Because Square-Penix pissed the creators of Crono Trigger/Crono Cross/Xenogears off with their shift towards the corporate bullshit, and they just didn't want to stand for it. Thus, the Crono Series got the axe and Square-Penix went on to make FFX-2 and all the other spin-offs of fucking Final Fantasy 7. Hell, we can't even enjoy a fan-made continuation of the Chrono Trigger storyline because Square's strangle hold on everything that they have published.

thank god i was born around that era, ff7, Xenogears and this game i enjoyed every second of them as a kid. hope we can go back in time :) nowadays ppl don't not focus on the story and characters and music, instead they want to make sure the graphics are top-notch and produce the game as fast as possible.

The game itself is pure art, especially on the music department. I mean, as soon as you start it up you're treated to a phenomenally rendered intro to the tunes of Scars of Time.
This whole soundtrack really showed what Mitsuda is capable of. With this, he put himself to be mentioned in the same breath as Uematsu, even though he doesn't have his catalog.

I live in New Jersey, by the shore, and every time i go to the beach (which is quite often) i think of either this song or the Dragoon Roost Island theme from LoZ: Wind Waker. Chrono Cross has the best, most diverse soundtrack of all time. Mistuda is a genius when it comes to blending all cultural styles together to create something unique, something that leaves the world breathless. Chrono Cross is damn close to a perfect game as i have ever seen. Heres to hoping for a sequel.
This game is awesome. Not as good as Chrono Trigger, but you can't compare the two games, they aren't very alike. The story line is captivating, and there are around 42 playable characters you can recruit on your journey.
Cross was the perfect game for me. I finished it about 15 times. The music made me feel sad, happy, angry ... it made me feel a lot of emotions, and that is its greatest power. Not many games made me feel like Chrono Cross. It is definitaly the best Chrono game and one of the underrated gems of the PSX.

Yes they did. Good music adds a depth to a game otherwise missing. Good music gives a game a soul. Much like the smell of something reminds you of a certain time or place..music can remind you of feelings or emotions. Those connected with great story telling are a wonder to recall.

ohh Vagrant Story! its my first time playing that game (through psx). Its kinda annoying though that you have switch around weapons a lot though otherwise enemies will be almost invincible.

I was so freaking excited when this game came out. NEW CHRONO TRIGGER SEQUEL! It didn't quite live up to the expectations of the original, but it was awesome in it's own way. The gameplay was fine for the period and it is still pretty fun today. It could use a remake with more time invested in fleshing out the story, and making more of the side characters interesting though.
To everyone inspired to play the game, don't. The music is entirely beautiful and I highly suggest the 3-CD soundtrack but the gameplay is crap. It was good-looking for its time but that was back on the PSX so it doesn't even have that going for it anymore.

It eventually gets tied into the CT plot, but I wouldn't recommend going into the game looking for a wrap-up of the CT world; best to view it as a completely separate game. (Do that, and it's awesome)
it does have more than a story depends on how u play the game i think it got more than 3 endings. 40ish characters u can get in ur team. the game is undescribable. as for chrono trigger. it's diffrent since they are 2 diffrent games

Yeah I guess, but for me, im really into games like this. I like games like acecombat, but games like chrono cross really made me nostalgic, which is what I find in a game, if its memorable or not. I personally find soundtrack the main reason I like a game. Think about it, chrono cross had a pretty good story line, there was death, going into different times, and the music just makes it even better, but yeah no kidding, many games on 360 have good storylines

I would have to agree. Nowadays, people are consumed by games that are exclusive on the xbox 360. While the graphics may be amazing, the storyline could never compare to one of these masterpieces. I personally found this song very nostalgic, made me want to think of the past.

I gotta admit, SquareSoft and the very early years of SquareEnix were amazing. It's nice to know that a "video game" company actually puts their hardest effort into creating music that are classified as masterpieces in the gaming industry. Why doesn't video game music have huge competitions like the Grammys? I think it's harder to create video game music than real-world music "most of the time".

Anyhow, it was in this part that paired together, the Chrono Series it he best RPG ever. It was a moment where you just go - wow, the writers, the composers, just perfect!

In my opinion, Nobuo doesn't even touch the surface of Mitsuda's brilliance. The Chrono series in general has proven his magnificence as a composer. This piece may be my favorite VGM, though other tracks on the Chrono Cross soundtrack come very close.

Haha, given that the many of the events you see unfold in C.C. are a direct result of Lavos's defeat (and subsequently hiding itself in time) and Lucca's failsafe in the FATE system I don't see how C.C. could be considered anything but a sequel to C.T.; I mean come on, two of the important characters from the game were the root of all of this mess. Then there's the Dead Sea itself... anyway, short of saying I AM THE SEQUEL TO C.T. I don't see how they could have made it more obvious.
but the game itself demostrated to be a sequel from CT, for example Tales of Phantasia, it´s the 4000 years sequel from Tales of Symphonia, and the characters from this story are not even mentioned there, but it IS the sequel anyways....
I'm starting to think you're -trying- to argue lol. Like I said, it's a 'bridge' (i.e. it's not sequential; it was more of a game made for fans, and CC was made on a whim afterward) between the two games. that being said, the information it gives is ultimately unnecessary, but it -does- give a lot more information about Kid and Guile's past. I don't see why you're so tenacious to think that cc isn't a sequel when it clearly (factually, even) is. Oh well, I'm done trying to persuade you. :)

Guile was originally supposed to be Magus in disguise, but I read that the team scrapped that idea when it got too convoluted and just made Guile a random cool character.

I've said this about 3 times on other videos. The developers themselves said that CC is the true sequel to CT, and it doesn't get any clearer than that. They said CC does not occur in a parallel universe and continues on the storyline of CT. Check the CC Ultimania for this info. I only mentioned that the main CT characters are in CC because my previous comment was a reply to someone else who didn't know it. If not for the developer's words I wouldn't have said CC was a direct sequel either.

Exactly. By itself, the soundtrack is breathtaking, but one of the best things about Yasunori Mitsuda is that the songs match the game perfectly. Each song fits the setting and adds to the experience. Both CT and CC had epic soundtracks that complemented the games perfectly.

Magus story isn't over because we don't know what happens to him at the end. As for Crono, lucca and Marle their end isn't known for sure it was said that Guardia fell for Porre attack as you say but it doesn't mean that the heroes were dead then, and even if that happened what stopped them from changing time once again before Guardia's fall? Something seems to be missed. But anyway whether they make a new whole story arc or not I would like to see a new Chrono game :)

Only problem is that oceanic island climates, even in fairly high latitudes, don't usually see that much temperature variation between summer and winter that would make for really colorful springs and autumns. (Think of Ireland as an example; the summers are cool and grassy-green while the winters get rather little snow. I don't think the fall colors are very vibrant there due to all the mildness and gradualness of the seasons. Spring probably looks much the same way.

well of course. uematsu also makes music that provoke feelings, but to me none as many as mitsudas. i find uematsus slower songs to be more soothing than anything, unlike mitsudas which are also soothing, but also affects the way i feel or makes me think back to times of certain feelings. lightwaves, yunas ballad and 1000 words are NOT by uematsu. he did not write any of ffx-2s music

I used to have a fantasy about a variation on this game where the climate is more cool-temperate and the two worlds are separated by six months into a Spring World and Fall World. This would be the music for the Fall World. Just have to change the graphics so colorful autumn leaves and spring flowers replace the tropical vegetation.

Actually, this isn't an original composition for Chrono Cross. It's from an earlier game that was released for an obscure satellite only game for the Snes called 'Radical Dreamers'. Yasunori Mitsuda composed the music for that game also. Download the SPC soundtrack at Zohpar's Domain and listen to it. It's a beautiful soundtrack! I love it! :)

Chrono Cross, an amazing RPG. Even better than Chrono Trigger, in my opinion. The Soundtrack is a stainless opus.

my only complaint about this game was that the end of the first disc suckes. there should have been more happening instead of just going to a place, changing disc, and exploring it.
I take that last part back, they are evil for at least not even giving it a good chance, of course the first ten minutes isn't much, the first ten minutes you don't know what's going on, you wake up in bed, and you run in a village.
Yeah, those are good! I think he means people that aren't proffesional raters though, cause the fans of the series, the vast majority of those people I find say the worst things ever. And I quote "Chrono Cross sucked ass, I didn't plkay for more than 10 minutes because I didn't want to vomit". Truly an evil person, to not appreciate it.
I feel terribly sorry for you. If I had the money, I would gladly send you a Ps or Ps2 along with a memory card and a copy because this and the original are both games everyone should experience.

On second thought, not DIE, since I wouldn't be able to experience it, but you get my drift, I'd go to drastic measures for another one.
Oh wow.... I love this song... I need to rebuy this game... Fucking love Chrono Cross... Though I still need to play Trigger.
It's also because they don't know how to rate a good game when they see it. This series was the best and they HAVE to brin it back. If I ever have enough money, first thing I'll do is get together with the creator and buy it from Square, let the resurrection team get back together to remake the original, and make an all new adventure. I would gladly die if I knew it would bring about another game. That is how much I love it.
