My very first Zelda game back on the classic GameBoy. Such an awesome game. So many good memories with this game. Wish I could play it again but, the battery in my cart died. Gotta get in there and replace it someday, I want to replay this classic badly... *_'LOZ: LINK'S AWAKENING' RULES..._*
The music is really what makes the Zelda series so compelling in my opinion. It makes those special moments in the games resonate a bit more.

Great game! The first Zelda game I ever beat. I played it on my gameboy while deployed over in Egypt. Such a great time.

Videogames are a true form of art.

Everybody who takes videogames seriously has that one game that they played as a kid that made them realize that the medium is something special, and not just a toy or time waster. For me I think it was Link's Awakening. That ending just blew me away as a kid, as did the rest of the game.

more like a sweet bitter ending. one of the saddest ending in any zelda game in history an thats what makes it amazing and one of my favorite games in the franchise.

This is my favorite Zelda--easily the most amazing story in the series IMO. Just totally sublime.
Never played this version of Zelda but the music just reminds me of Nintendo video game sound tracks which was cool to listen to when I was little and still is now.

You're absolutely right. The new thing that Link's Awakening introduced was that you could play different songs with the ocarina instead of just one.
I was under the impression A link to the Past introduced the "ocarina" Sure, it's named Flute, and all you use it for is quick travel, but its the shape of an Ocarina. :)

Dude, the game is over 20 years old. There's a statute of limitations on that shit. If you're seriously THAT worried about the story of the game, you should have tracked town a copy ages ago.

The best 2D Zelda game ever made.
This was a great entry in the series. I also liked the fact it was not set in Hyrule. Good change of pace.

Definitely a masterpiece, indeed. It also has one of the simplest and nicest metaphors I've seen about "playing a video game": to wake the Wind Fish means to finish the game, which means (for both the character and player) to wake up from the fantasy world and go back to reality. This metaphor is also the meaning of the engraving in the cavern: basically, if you like this virutal world and choose to go on "living" in it, you will eventually (and paradoxically) put an end to it.
Really a great theme. I should play that game again!
He said at one point that he couldn't decide between TP & OoT for which was his favorite 3D Zelda. Since WW appeared on this list, I figured that both TP (which is already on the list) and OoT would be on here as well. There are still 4 slots left; we may yet see OoT.

I gotta say, if this is your choice for best Zelda game, you got a lotta guts- and I agree with your choice. For an original Game Boy game, there's just so much depth to Link's Awakening. It's easily the most underrated game of the Zelda series.

Looks like one of my 5 predictions came true! That leaves Ocarina of Time, Chrono Trigger, Mother 3, and EarthBound for what I think the remaining 4 are.

This is the only Zelda game where I genuinely cared about the story. Don't get me wrong, I love the great majority of them. Ocarina of Time is fantastic, Majora's Mask might be one of the most amazingly depressing games I've played (and this coming from someone who's played most Silent Hill games), and Wind Waker is just so goddamn charming, but Link's Awakening actually has a story that hits you really hard. It's the Matrix blue pill/red pill dilemma stretched out to a whole game.

I picked this up a few months back and good Lord talk about well designed. They take very good measures to make you care for the people in the world and the emotional impact of the game is phenomenal. It's something I always look for in a great game.

I love this game too. When i played it over the summer, i was not sure what i was in for. My word, this game is an absolute gem. Among the best GB games i have ever played. The dungeons are unique and the music is incredible for the time. It is also one of the richest soundtracks i have ever heard as well. Everything about this game is just golden. I truely agree with the fact that it is a masterpiece.
Damn right it's a masterpiece. It's probably the only game I've ever 100% without ever looking at any guide or walkthrough. That includes all Heartpieces, including the very hidden one in the water.

Yeah I also, really love this game, even if i palyed through it a little late, the first time I played it I was pretty young, and I'll always remember it as the first game catching me more than Pokemon (I didn't know Zelda at that time) And the 2D top down Zeldas will always have a special place for me, yeah also the Oracles! It's sad how overlooked 2D Zelda Games are today by the community, treated as the second class which they defenitely not are.

The game that took some inspiration from the TV show Twin Peaks also introduced a lot of new elements now popular to the series: trading sequence sidequests, the ocarina, setting different items to the buttons of your choice, fishing, etc. To me, Link's Awakening is a masterpiece!
Beating the boss of Face Shrine (named Façade, which turns out to be a very appropriate name) and then learning that Koholint Island is actually just a dream world created by the sleeping Wind Fish was very memorable. Your mission which is to wake up the Wind Fish suddenly becomes very troublesome and when you finally do it in the end, you can't help but get a bittersweet feeling.
This game is timeless, it aged perfectly well. The fact that it's set outside the kingdom of Hyrule is very refreshing and gives it a very unique atmosphere. It has my favorite overworld in the series as it feels very dense with things to do and discover, there's barely any space wasted. The dungeons are also my favorites in a 2D Zelda.
