I've just discovered this by playing the 3DS version. I love it. I know it's not the same, but it's allowed me to discover these beautiful orchestral renditions. That said, what's really surprising is the upload date of this video! 2007! Back then the last thing on my mind was Dragon Quest, much less watching YouTube. I can't believe how long you've been on YouTube, Supra! I wonder what my life would've been like if I had discovered this back then.

10/10, 95-97/100 kind of game. Easily one of the greatest RPG's of all time and easily my favourite. I love this even more than FF7 and that's not lightly said. I'm kissing ass quite a bit but seriously, in gaming history, every once in a blue moon a gem releases that simply cannot be replicated ever again. FF7 did it in 1997. DQ8, in 2006 (US release).

When someone told me that the 3DS version had midi music, I was like "but it's beautiful anyway" and some music like the battle theme I prefer the midi versions, but this one is totally killing the midi version so far !
It's unfortunate that the 3DS version uses the MIDI, but if your 3DS is hacked you can bring back the orchestral soundtrack.

Did you notice if Dragon Quest VIII is based on Knight & Baby/Guardian's Crusade for its game world environment? For anyone don't know about Knight & Baby/Guardian's Crusade: Knight & Baby, or called "Guardian's Crusade" in US version, is a PS1 JRPG that its world isn't symbolized with icons or 3D icons for any places in world map such as towns, dungeon entrances, house, etc like traditional JRPG. Instead, all of them are directly rendered. So, you can see any details of any towns without entering it. Proofs if DQVIII is based on Knight & Baby/Guardian's Crusade are: -Anything at world map is completely not symbolized by any icons. -Music changes if you enter the town, except for loading screen and people appears after loading screen. K&B/GC have no loading screen when entering any towns and any people at any towns are visible even the town isn't entered. -You can only land at outside of any towns, except for auto landing positioning when you want to land at inside of any towns. -Visible enemies, only for 3DS version of DQVIII. -Ship can only parked at specified place. For DQVIII, you can only park ship at the port.

Neon Hagalaz they still hold up, well in my opinion.
I have an interesting love-hate relationship with this game. I love the beautiful cel-shaded graphics, I love the characters, I love the British voice acting and the world as a whole. But in this game the random encounters annoy me way more than in any other RPG. The dungeons and the distances in the world map are so long that you are going to hear that same battle theme loop over and over and over again. Not to mention that you can only save in towns, so if you die, you go all the way back. This is possibly the single hardest J-RPG I've ever played and not for the right reason. I still love this game, but I've never finished this and having spent over 100 hours with this, I have decided not to come back and finish this at any time.

I recommend picking up the 3DS version if you can! it completely does away with the random encounters; still doesn't change the saving, but should make it a bit easier to plan around
I had the strategy guide for this game for years and it always looked amazing. I eventually got it on PS2, but never got very far into it - the random encounters just wore me down and became tedious. Perhaps on 3DS it will be a lot more manageable.
I am a little dissapointed that we won't be getting the orchestrated tracks for the 3ds version
Proto Fenix I won't buy the 3DS version of Dragon Quest VIII because of that and because I don't like the Nintendo handheld line. I wish there was an HD remaster of this game on PS4, with the option to toggle between the orchestral and MIDI soundtracks.
What an interesting world I'm living in. My younger brother used to play this game on PS2, many, many years ago... and now he's buying me the game on 3DS. I cannot wait. (yes, I know it doesn't have this music sound track, but I'm still very excited!)
Normally I volume off and listen to other stuff when I game...but here that's kinda tough to do with DQ8. It's definitely at the top of my Favorite games of all time list.

Only got chance to play the demo when I was younger. Never experienced the full game, but the demo was all I needed to love it.
This game was so masterfully done that I almost cried when this epic track played out 10 years ago on my first playthrough.

I have never played this game before, but I really like this music. I do have some experience with the DQ series, though - I have played through DW1, DW2 and DW4 for the NES several times, made it quite far in DW3 and DQ5 (made it to Dark World in DW3 and got the Heroes in DQ5) and also got started with DQ6, so I am familiar with the style of the series.
When I got this for the Christmas of 2005 it was one of the most excited moments I ever got getting a game. Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, and The Legend Of Dragoon were others

Why the beginning of this game is so hard ? I mean the very first couple of ennemies can rape you easily if there are more than 3 ennemies in a single battle... Beginning of games are supposed to be easy...

+tom proctor Uh... No Way harder would be something like Shin Megami Tensei or Etrian Odyssey Those are hard Dragon Quest is one of the easiest series out there, definitely a beginners game from a technical standpoint.
+Nep Nep Okay no, that's just plain not true. The games you have mentioned are VERY difficult. I agree, but Dragon Quest VII is probably the most difficult JRPG style game out there besides them. Look at the comparisons! Final Fantasy X - easy, Paper Mario - Easy, Lost Odyssey - Easy. Really any final fantasy 5-10 is a cake walk compared to Dragonquest VIII. I very much so appreciated Dragonquest VIII for its difficulty.

@cidzultima Dragon Quest XI in production for the PS4 and will probably see a US/EU release scheduled for a 2016 release, if my sources remain trustworthy. Game of the year right there if so.

My comment was supposed to make the point "it sounds as beautiful as something from Mozart", not start a discussion whether it is "similar enough" to Mozart or not Give it a rest, seriously.

Ok, now I get that. I feel there's a difference between an actual comparison and an hyperbole, but I actually overreacted.
I mean, you might as well hear someone saying "this song is like heaven!" and then answer that there is no proof that heaven really feels like this - that would be almost the same kind of reaction, IMO.
And not even that is true. It seems you haven't listened to actual classical music, because how an orchestra sounds today nas nothing to with how people composed back then. I can see how that's a way to show respect and praise with this piece(which I find beatiful as well), but this was pretty much...pretentious. Orchestral music =/= Classical music.
I don't know why it matters that I mentioned Mozart, it should be obvious what point I was trying to make, so i find it unnecessary to get so hung up over that. Most people would interpret my comment as "oh, he thinks this sounds like something that might have come from artists like Mozart, and that it has the same kind of classical feel as the music from his time period".
You still gave the wtong impression and i'm uncertain you know enough about musical composition to tell such. "Just because Mozart had a certain style it doesn't mean he would not be able to use other styles" It actually does. The style you have as a composer isn't defined by the genre, is defined by personal traits and preferences. Let alone Mozart had such musical inequiparable talent due him being autist, and that I find Uematsu kinda overrated(not saying bad, but overrated).
I didn't say this sounded exactly the same as Mozart's own works, I said it sounded like something he would have been capable of writing and that it held the same level of quality as his own works. Just because Mozart had a certain style it doesn't mean he would not be able to use other styles - look at Nobuo Uematsu for example, I consider him just as talented as Mozart and he has written all kinds of songs for the Final Fantasy series, even though he gravitates towards classical music.

Breathtaking and beautiful. Fond members of scouring the extremely vast overworld in this game looking for the next fucking town for what felt like hours. I'm quite pleased the overworld music is something so amazing as this, because if it wasn't, I'd probably get a bit bored. Such a fitting tune for such a (heheh) vast world.

im so glad I grew up playing RPG games like this one. you have no limit to what you can do in an RPG world like this one for instance. but these days kids are being brainwashed with th CoD crap. I too am a victim of modern day gaming like this, I really do love shooting games as well, but this game, Dragon Quest VIII, is the first game I have ever played and I still love it to this day. As much as I love modern RPG's, and as much that I love that they've diversified and have developed deep stories and different types of settings, going back and playing DQ8 makes me remember why I fell in love with RPG's in the first place. It's just a simple fantasy setting, yourself as the hero, out to save the day from a bad guy, with fantastic music and stylized graphics. No complicated moral issues or demigods or "grittiness", just straight-forward, rpg goodness =)
I adore Dragon Quest VIII. There are lots and lots of great RPG's out there, but one of the things that makes me love DQ8 so much is its simplicity. Not that it's easy, but it isn't overcomplicated in the story or in the game's mechanic's, it's very straight forward. This gives it a nice nostalgic feeling to it, especially if you grew up playing 16-bit era rpgs. It gives me the same "feeling" games like FFIV and Lufia gave me back in the day. And the music is amazing ;)

Dragon Quest 8 is one of the best RPGs on the PS2, along with FFX and XII, the KH games, and Persona 3 and 4
already beated it for the second time! and yet i am still not tired of it. its such a big world, its really like a second earth because it so freaking damn huge. Replay value: 10. no question about it. i will certainly beat it for a third time sometime.
Great soundtrack, solid story, fairly difficult battles...yea I spent a lot of hours on this game. Oh and don't forget-Slime Bingo is where shit is at.
Who did actually play this more then once? The world is so big, and this song just awakes so many emotions in me i just need to play it again. Though its like 2 months since i beat it. Anyone else?

I am actually a tough dude, I rarely weep for anything, but this game makes me cry like a little baby. I mean, this music... you just want to strand around without the opression of anything. I equipped the special ring and no more fights. Just bathe your soul in the warmth of the restless sun, quench your sadness to the caotic twinker of spotless clouds, feel the smooth touch of the cloth on the colapsed skin your journeys have given to the Earth cyclic chaos and... breath in the air. Love it!

I always thought the way this game was orchestrated reminded me of music from the 50s-70s movies. I dont know what it is, but its just amazing.
@Elc22 They did that with Xenosaga too! I recorded the music from the US version of the game, but messed up my recording, and I've looked EVERYWHERE for the orchestrated battle music and can't find it!
I heard they orchestrated the music for the US release, so the original japanese release was all synth, though that not necessarily a bad thing.

I walked around the store looking at more games, but kept thinking about this game the whole time until the time when I was coming back to the entrance and saw it eyeing me again.. and I was like "EFF IT I MUST GET THIS GAME" lol. Low and Behold... I fell in love with this game.. and Jessica too xD
the only thing bad about this game is the random encounters every 5 seconds
@OhMySong Yeah ik what you mean. I got DQ V, and I'm suprised at how much it sucked me in just by it's fairy tale story and beautiful music. I might get the others.

This is a great game! I just finished it the beginning of this year, and it's definitely one of the best RPGs I've ever played. Although my attitude towards the music has never been the same after I found out the composer is a notorious war crimes denier.
i regret selling my ps2 also. i had to because i need the game store credits for a xbox 360. it's only $100 now so i will be getting another by christmas.
i remember just shopping around in the gamestore cause i had a chance to buy a new game, but didnt know what to get. i saw this awesome cover on one particular game and it said "dragon quest viii". i said this looks cool and bought it. best gaming decision ever made.
Wait, seriously? That IS saying something... I tried and couldn't really got into it... I don't have much experience but at a glance all the turn-based I-hit-you-you-hit-me rpgs are too reptetitive to play that many.
I FUCKING LOVE DRAGON QUEST 8. even though it's not very popular here in America, and it's game play mechanics are old, it still has a certain charm to it. i wish it would sell millions like japan. for god's sake this is the best selling ps2 game in japan. that's really saying something.
Precisely my thoughts on this matter, it' just slightly nostalgic since I've known the series from the first one [1992]... Could be just another shooter with a half decent series' name though - we'll have to see...
Those are some great titles to look forward to - especially Bioshock 2 [the first one was great] and Assassin's Creed 2 [personally], Red Dead Redemption also has a lot of potential... I am also looking forward to Project Trico "Shadow of Colossus 2" and Thief 4 [The Thief games were made by the same people who developed Bioshock]... And who could miss a classic like Wolfenstein...

Yes, I played some of the earlier games in the Dragon Quest as well as this one - the first seven games were pretty retro, with pretty old graphics, like in the original Zelda... I liked this game the best, for reasons like: it's a complete open world, with massive landscapes to explore in full 3D, and Final Fantasy like battles - along the lines of a classic story... i Would say that I prefer it to Final Fantasy, and it's worth renting if your not sure...
I mean it sounds like an old 1950's Disney epic film as well as sounding great and original...

Aside from Dragon Warrior 8, what exceptional games has SE made since their merge? As far as I can tell, there was this, and then...well that's about it FFXI and FFXII were mediocre at best, terrible at worst. Valkyrie Profile 2 was decent, but Enix did a better job with the first one, much like Star Ocean 3, Star Ocean 2 was far far better. Infinite Undiscovery and Last Remnant are totally forgettable Seriously, what game/franchise they've developed since, has been better than before?

Damn, 200 hours... I've never played this game but seeing that this game is coming from the makers of Final Fantasy ( I think), it must be good. I most hours I've ever spent on a game is 126 hours and that was on Final Fantasy 12. I just want to play new games (long games with good stories, good gameplay, and good-amazing music), probably why I spent so much time on FF12.
dam i think this is the best game i have ever playd cos its fun,challenging,it has got good graphics and very very good musics spend over 200 hours when playing it thru 4 times :)
A very good game, with that DBZ-esque theme thanks to Akira Toryama. I always name the hero Goku or Kakaroto, of course (and that Italin Mr. Satan, oh boy, he is great!)

i never even heard of Dragon Quest/Warrior until my brother bought this game. And I bet he bought it only for the FFXII demo. then he either sold or traded it. Thank God I bought this game again when I went up to college.
Never finished the game, the last boss kept kicking my ass and I never bothered to level up for him, great score though :)
DQ8 did the overworld better than any other rpg I've ever played. Huge, dangerous, full of secrets, and had some good scenery and music to go along with it.
This song is very entertaining, a calm rythem followed by a beautiful orchestra... I can stay on the world field for hours listening this music... Too bad i sold the game ;(

This was an excellent game. So worth the buy and lasts so long. The soundtrack, if not good music altogether, is extremely distinctive.
