It's an original piece by Hirokazu Tanaka who also did a lot of other classic Nintendo music like Metroid and Duck Hunt. The song sounds familiar because it was made to imitate Russian folk songs like Kalinka.

True story, this game helped to end the Cold War.
It was already on its way out when this game came out...
Tetris came out in 1984. Gorbachev wouldn't become General Secretary for another year. NATO and WarPact were both following hardline policies against the other, and less than a year ago, Able Archer brought the world to the very edge of catastrophe. 1987 was when Gorbachev started his Perestroika reforms, which is what would ultimately weaken the Soviet Union beyond its breaking point. If Gorbachev hadn't been elected, it would have remained under control of the hardline members of the party, no changes would have been made, the satellite states wouldn't have successfully split away, and the USSR would have most likely persisted a significant while longer, assuming we didn't all die in nuclear fire before that, which would be the more likely outcome.

This was my song of choice when I played. C sounded too whimsical to me, and A was well enough but this music was perfect when the game speeded up.

Omg!! Is this the version in which you get a certain amount of points/levels, and a rocket suddenly appears telling you "Congratulations!" and such!?!? Tetris is amazing...

I always tried to hit the blocks right at :18 and :21 and make that PLAH sound at the right time. Good times.
You never got bored of moving blocks left and right as they fell down. I would always challenge myself to see how many Tetris I can get in one game before I blinked at the wrong time and lose.

It is been a while since you uploaded type A and I was waiting for this type.And this is very good,no question about that.
Utterly classic. And it rocks. Makes me want to grab my good old Gameboy and get all "Tetris" for a while.
I haven't played the original one in a while, but this is the theme I'd always choose.
