I really don't get all the hype about this song. It's good but some people act like it's the best music of the 8-bit era - when basically everything by Chris Hülsbeck and Yuji Naka is ten times better.
I feel the same thing. I like it but the song just sounds a bit generic to me, there are so many better (or at least more memorable, without considering nostalgia) 8-bit OSTs out there.

It could might as well have nothing to do with late 80s romantcism, or have to do with a bit of both. Music can create a nostalgic mood without the listener actually being nostalgic to the particular piece, that's not stranger than achieving other emotions through music. The track come across as having a sense of wonder, pensiveness (particulary at the beginning) and playfulness so I'm not surprised at the whole nostalgia-angle.

The Ducktales Remastered soundtrack is being done by virt (Jake Kaufmann). If you doubt his abilities, look up "Crystal Flash", where he covered the entire Super Metroid soundtrack. He also has a ton of experience with chiptunes; he's put out hundreds of them. Trust me, there's nothing to worry about.

It's more than just a "HD remake" though! It's got more story and voice acting from the original voice actors (except the ones that have passed on, like Launchpad's actor). The boss fights are more elaborate and challenging, the original stages have more areas in them, the graphics look exactly like the cartoon etc... And the music is being done by "virt" (Contra 4, Double Dragon: NEON). He's got a knack for doing perfect new renditions of old 80s game music while sounding the same.

Kinuyo Yamashita. Konami, Castlevania. And I dare you to call her a "chiptune artist/musician" after looking at her youtube page. Most of these people were musicians. There was no such thing as "chiptune music" as something someone would just do and play for an audience back then. Most of these people were music students/graduates/talents just getting work. The styles of the music were limited/dictated by the limitations of the console hardware.

Though I never played this game before it is a huge shame to what the gaming world has come to, even after excellent soundtracks and I.P games such as Ducktales, Mega Man, Chrono Trigger, Sonic, Breath of Fire, Bomberman in the late 80's and 90's. Before all of this, each game involved a great handwork and was a true piece of art by itself. For example, Zelda. No one had ever seen something like that before! Or, if you prefer a more acctual example: the Deus Ex saga (including human revolution). They also were really innovative!!

I was making a general statement, not to this game in particular. The gaming market crashed in 1983, and consisted until NES was released in 1985, and it came with a very large game library. But video games really picked up in the 1990's starting in 1992. Even at that point arcades still made a larger profit than home systems at that point. So as I said, the people that created this amazing game had no idea how many would see it, but put effort into anyway. Calm down.
historically they did not think that home consoles were the future, infact, Nintendo was financially invested in arcades because at the time(86-89) arcades provided far more money than the more expensive home consoles. So relax buddy, he didnt bash a beloved system, just stating that the developers put alot of heart into these games that no one might have played. something not seen that often today

The NES was very popular, I'm not doubting that, but it was considered a kid's toy. Adults didn't tend to play it, or even know about it, unless they had families who were also interested in it. Back then, the only TV commercials you would see for games were during cartoons. Nowadays, video game ads are played during primetime and during trailers at movies. Video game fans have undergone a massive demographic change and expansion over the years. You cannot deny that.
Yeah, I have a hard time believing the NES was obscure. Then again, I really have no say as I wasn't even a year old by the time the N64 came out.

For every great, wonderful game of a generation, there are about 20 that are total garbage. This applies now, this applied during the 16-bit generation, the 8-bit generation, and good dog did it apply during the leadup to the 1983 crash. The NES era was my era, and I remember it a bit differently. It was big, but to a different kind of audience. My parents and teachers had no idea what a video game console even was, they just knew that the NES was all the rage among kids and is what they all wanted for Christmas. Nowadays, video games are inescapable and embedded into our culture, even to those who don't play them, and are generally accepted as an art medium along with books and movies. When I was a kid, it wasn't like that.

@Blaquecell You're not the only one, and there's more to it than that. All the music and sound effects in MM2 was done by Takeshi Tateishi and Sakaguchi deconfirmed Ducktales as being his. In other words, the same person responsible for MM2's soundtrack was also responsible for that of DuckTalkes'. Bet you didn't think it was that simple, huh?

I also feel the things you mention can be said about many gamers today, mostly young ones I believe since they fall easily for the "epic" trap. Many of these also measure against others, sometimes in a bad way. I guess the prime example here is in FPS games.

Describing what was so amazing about this games is so hard.... there was no way to save you progress in most of this games, so you usually had your three lives and probably a "continue" and that's all... so you really needed to know the game very well to finish it... usually by the time you finished it, you knew every song in it very well

@MPHswayze I honestly think it's because gaming has reached a point where people CAN feel nostalgic and have great memories of it in it's infancy. I think a lot of starting gamers look upon their parents and older friends and hear about their memories and they want those memories as well. They feel like they can't have that without all of this "Epic everything". They misinterpret why those old school gaming memories are there, only seeing how big the memories themselves are.

Game music doesn't serve the same purpose today as it did back in the day. Back in the days the song had to be catchy and awesome to fill the void left by lacking sound effects. In games now, due to increased memory and computing ability, everything can be made to make noise, reducing the role of music. That's why most game music today isn't as good. However, there are exceptions. Nintendo and ZUN (maker of Touhou) first come to mind, but are by no means the only decent musicians of today.
First part gets you set for the nostalgia then the second part makes you feel as though you are playing it again :D

We remember the best of the best from the NES, and block crap like "California Games" from our mind. Sure what's popular today might not hold a candle to the best games of yesteryear, but then again stuff like Super Mario Galaxy blows the original SMB out of the water. It's all about perspective.

damn powerful music, so powerful I actually remember what I thought when I came across it as a 7 year old in 1991, I thought it was out of place as hell!! more fitting for a sad ending theme than moon stage music! I didn't think it was great at the time, because it just felt weird for where it was at. Transylvania fit its theme perfectly and I remember thinking that one was better and more catchy.

A nintendo game that wasn't even based off of any real nintendo original characters but based off of a Tv show (a good one if I remember correctly) and it made such an epic song!
This song has to be my favourite of the third generation. So many great and memorable tunes produced at the time (Dr Wily Stage 1, SMB Overworld, Anything from the Mother soundtrack) but this one takes the top spot. Fantastic stuff. Happy Birthday, NES.

@Makatacaly Most RPG's and platformers actually still have awesome music. FPS games make silence to enhance the atmosphere. I recommend Tales of Symphonia and the Super Mario Galaxy games for those that wish they were born in the early 90s or late 80s. They are quite solid gameplay and musical experiences that I dare say are just as good as Ducktales. I grew up with my older sister who loved the show and would watch it all the time. I also had the game.

I take it your first system was the PSX or N64. Both are very great consoles. I suggest not dwelling on what could have been and enjoying what you have now. I would have loved to be born in the 1970's so I could've experienced Atari, but I accepted what I got.

Ah the days of striving to accomplish something in video games. I tried so hard as a kid to beat this at a friends house, we would sit around and trade off on parts we were good at and still lose. When we did beat it late one night past bed time we yelled so loud we got in trouble. Makes me sad to think how, today, every game you play you save your progress after every step or you have to spend 20+ hours to unlock the fun.

I'm only 17, and yet this kind of music... the 8-it and 16-bit era... it'll always mean so much to me. I remember being 3 years old and playing Rocketman Adventures and the original Sonic the Hedgehog on my Genesis. I never beat either of them, but idc. All that matters are the memories, and man, they'll stick with me till im on my deathbed.
What I like the most about this song is that they didn't use the midi capabilities to make it sound like particular instruments (other than drums, but hey, what can ya do?). That's what makes the duck tales music special to me, it's just good original, made for 8 bit sound, music.

Actually Square did not leech at all and created a new storyline incorporating the familiar Disney characters. If they created the same game with different characters you wouldn't be saying that. It's so funny. All you needed back then was ONE freaking person with heart and soul and the ability to produce chiptunes to do the whole soundtrack of a game (usually). And most of those retro tracks are more catchy then a lot of today's tunes. How ironic.

It's by Yoshihiro Sakaguchi, who also wrote music for Mega Man 1 and Mega Man 2. Most of the Mega Man (Rockman) games had more than one composer. I know that he wrote the music for HeatMan in Mega Man 2, but I don't know specifically what other pieces he contributed for those games. Anyway, he's clearly, a composer with a real talent for melody!! I'd love to know what he's up to now, and hear some more of his work if he's got anything newer.

@Xijor: This was back when Disney games weren't embarrassingly crappy because Capcom and Inafune (Megaman's creator) headed most of them. Disney games didn't really begin to suck until the PS1/N64 era.
