While I love the FF7 OST, this is one of the songs I reeeeally disliked. It's too depressing, so I normally end up muting.

@greenyxi FFVII kinda is a depressing game though. Even the overworld theme had an overarching sense of despair imo. Melancholy is the perfect word to describe this OST to be honest.

@greenyxi I think that's the point of the track though, "hitting with the weight of the world as the planet is crying" I get what you mean but I think it fits perfectly the theme of the game, especially at that point in the game.

@greenyxi Sure, the OST as a whole is fucking gigantic and extremely diverse so there's bound to be a few tracks you won't like, for example, I don't particularly care a whole lot for Jenova Absolute and can't choose between Birth Of A God and One Winged Angel as to which I like the most.

I didn't own a PSX at the time, so I didn't play FFVII until it was released on the PC. That version definitely had its issues, but it never took away from the gameplay, music, and incredible story.

It's been years since you posted this and more since it came out. But I still feel it. It gets better every time. The air of uneasy truth. The experience of the beyond, like eyes all around. The atmosphere of songs and places like this... that's what made this game truly amazing. That's why it is my favorite. It is more vivid than any dream I've ever had.

FF7 was the main game that brought jRPGs to Eastern Europe. Almost noone played or even knew the existanse of Chrono Trigger,Secret of Mana, FF6 , etc- those titles were obscure and mystify.

chedruid Not just Eastern Europe, but Europe period. It's also memorable for being one of the games in Spanish with the worst translation. Of the games you mentioned only Secret of Mana got a European release.

I have to say, FF7 was the best game I ever played. Just giving my 2cents, as everyone else does for their own good games. Powerfull gameplay, memorable materia system, phenomenal cut scenes for it's time, character development at it's finest and many many more elements brought together in the 32 bit era.

The soundtrack was amazing, for sure. I played this one after FF8, FF9 and FF10, so I confess I found the materia system a step backwards from those other games. FF8's junction system was probably the best one for me.

Comments like these sadden me greatly. FF 8, 9 and X were all great, even better than 7 in their own ways. I think it is still a good game and most of what makes 7 so highly praised today is the nostalgia factor. 7 was the first of its kind and did a lot of things well, but I wouldn't say it was the best FF game by a long shot. I would agree that the newer games have been lackluster. Square Enix is too focused on making new features than creating lovable characters and immersive plots.

Nostalgia plays a part in everyone's life, and for many this was their first Final Fantasy. However, it was also perhaps one of the more surreal. While all the PSX era games had static, pre-rendered backgrounds, I'd argue that this game had perhaps the most colorful, unique, and creative of the bunch. Forgotten city was so mysterious in its looks, the song only compounding such a bizarre location (what the shit lived in that giant conch?!). The very sound of the OST had such a unique flare, perhaps due to restrictions, giving it a more artificial, if unnatural sound other Square rpgs had at the time (Legends of Mana!) which in my opinion made the experience all the more enthralling. The world map had a grey tint to it by the end, with the somber music and the fact the world was ending all fit so perfectly together, like many things did. (other ff games did this too, even 6 before it, but still it worked!) Everyone will have their favorites, but this game did a lot of things right at the right time, from unique characters like Red XIII, to the bizarre enemies that covered the world. As others said above me, this game brought JRPGs to their countries, that wasn't by mistake. Final Fantasy 6 is perhaps one of my favorites, and I can understand people hating on 7 after the shift from sprites(or believing others loved the game simply because it was 3d, even if characters looked pretty bad and it always bothered me that they had no mouth) but even with the weak push when it came to the polygons.. the background, atmosphere, and many mechanics just worked and elevated it from such faults to the point where I could forgive it It's not all nostalgia, and I'd disagree when you say it isn't the best "By a long shot", because I'd put it right up there with 6, 8, 9, and Tactics, which perhaps had one of the best stories imo. Strange, pre-rendered machinery filled several backgrounds, ghosts in the abandoned train-yard, the swinging guillotine guys in the abandoned mansion.. the thrill of finally climbing the Shinra tower... finding Lucrecia's Cave... looking for that damn key item at the dig site. All of it just created a strange, yet unforgettable world later games just didn't do the same (though don't get me wrong, they did things in their own way, and did it quite well). The setting of the game opened up so many possibilities for uniqueness that they used. The other games setup a very specific theme and stuck with it, it was less of a mess and more direct, which is fine, but 7 kept that perfect blend of fantasy and technology that 6 was pushing as well, while at the same time being sloppy, yet surprisingly well kept. TLDR: It just saddens me when I see comments like this when it truly boils down to ones own opinion, and what they got out of their experience with this, and any other game. I've played every Final Fantasy (except 12) Yes, even 11 and 14 quite passionately, we're not all blind by nostalgia when there is truly something to enjoy. Frankly, you're making it seem like you simply know something everyone else doesn't, but it doesn't quite work that way. I spent just as many hours in 8, 9, and 10 as I have in 7, each a big part of my life. Opinions. We know what we like, and I'd put 7 right up there even with its lacking story, the comical villain that was Sephiroth, and the disgusting yet silly character of Don Corneo.. why? Because the game is fun, and that's what matters in the end. Cheers for a three year necro.

For me the power of this piece isn't so much the first time you come here (Aeris' death) but the second. Her death is confusing at first and seemingly pointless, but when you return, you learn why she did what she did, and what she sought to accomplish. Even though you have the answers now, the despair remains; we learn that, even if meteor is stopped, there may still be no hope for humanity. "Meteor, weapon, everything will disappear. Perhaps, even ourselves." Truly a chilling implication.

I agree with you. And i hate the fact that the ff games that came after 7 absolutely sucked. It was the great tragedy in my teens to learn the harsh reality that the first 7 games were in such a class of their own. Final fantasy today isnt worth the name final fantasy,

This has a pretty good plotline and is more complex than things like chrono trigger and FF6 most of the time, yeah, but those plotlines aren't bad either. I'd say FF6's character depth surpassed this, though. Their music and gameplay are all really good. But, the game with the most complex plot is FFT.

You know I'm tired of haters saying "Did this game truly change lives?" That this game was shit. All I have to say to those people is Penis. Yes I called them a Penis. Now I've been playing video games since I was 4 but this game alone changed me to wanting to play video games more. It made me pay attention to the music and gameplay and story and for the graphics at the time was truly amazing. It taught me what a great quality game is and what isn't. So yes it did change my life Penis's. GTFO.

This is the type of shit I can't understand. Do people seriously mean it when they say this game "changed lives"? Like, for real? There's no way you can be serious. This game was completely mediocre in every way. Hell, the only thing that stood out about it when it was released were its graphics. The story is just your average cliche J-RPG plot complete with wangst galore. They didn't even fully spellcheck this fucking game. "This guy are sick". That's one of Aerith's lines in the game. Gtfo.

The first and last time Final Fantasy kept to the magic despite being in 3D. They didn't need fully-voiced cutscenes, complex battle systems, and a systematic abandoning of their roots.

I really hope they don't remake Final Fantasy 7. Lets consider the differences in FF games from then till now. No more airships, linear paths, lack of side content, lack of character development, they turned Cloud into an emo like in KH and FFAC, bad voice overs, bad stories and even worse endings. Those people over at square enix believe that if you have pretty pictures then that makes an awesome game. I like FF7 and if they remake it I know it won't be the same.

I wish you were right. However, It would not make much profit due to the fact that the majority of the fan base of video games now a days (me excluded) only desire "lots of guns" and "awesome special effects". A remake would be beautiful though, when story, a unique plot, and a creative atmosphere come together, well you have ff7.

You're right. The fans didn't simply "overrate" FFVII. They blew it way out of proportion. Still, like I said, FFVII is a damn good game. I'm really enjoying it, and it certainly deserves a huge portion of the praise it gets.

Best RPG of all time, but y'all know that. If you like FF7 you should also play Grandia II and Legend of Dragoon. Two games IMHO that can compete with this one in terms of music, story, emotion, epicness.

Final Fantasy VII changed my life, like so many other gamers. I wasn't new 2 games, I wasn't even new 2 RPG's. I'd been gaming since I was 4 & I played this at about 15. But the effect on me as a person was like a shell-shock. The music is key. It is like remembering a place because of a smell. Music helps you remember an emotion. That first time you played, the first time the music tweaked your soul. It never leaves you..& it never will. This more than anything is why 7 will always be the best.

@Dragonitlas lol I remember avoiding it like the plague whenever I saw sephiroth fanboys in the naturo rps talking about ff7. But when I played it on the ps3 two years ago, I felt amazed. It ended up being one of the best experiences I ever went through. Same with Chrono trigger (played it on the computer in 2007, and now it's my #1). Moral of the story: You'll never know hits you in a positive light until you try it.

@DarkRikdyou123 This game was so over exposed and thus overrated since console rpgs weren't a draw back in that day. So when all of a sudden it came out, everyone I knew talked about it.....I was like yeah it is alright I guess, it seems but did you ever play this game before.... Ten Years later I wanted to play it straight up and It's about an average/good game that hit big. There are better games that came out around the time, but the accessibility and exposure of it was monumental...

I bought this on PSN and got to the part right before you fight that guy who looks like Seymour( last boss I think), I don't remember his name. Anyways, my MGS4 fat 80 Gig PS3 decides to YLOD on me before I could beat the game, thus making my hard drive and SAVE data useless( I didn't back data up back then). Ugh.... I am not playing this again, lol. Was it fun? How was beating the game like?

Thank you for showing this song some love. Its definitly the second best song in ff 7. One winged angel is my fave but this one is a close second. The final fantasy games have unbelievable music. I wish more games had this caliber of sound.

@TheRetroPrime FFVII is slow, like all RPG's are. It's not repetitive, far from it. Characters are a subjective thing. The game spends a lot of time developing each character. As for freedom, you can literally travel the entire world, visit every city/village/cave at any time during the game. Hundreds of weapon/armour/items/spells to carry. Maybe you should try playing it. As you clearly have no idea what you're on about.

I hope they don't remake FFVII. It would only be a further raping of the game. You don't see Nintendo going around remaking Mario, Metroid or Zelda games. Enhancements, yes, but they further the franchises and continue to make great games. Square-Enix can't make a good game anymore, so the just continue to milk the old great games. Anyway. They can't remake this game, and keep the same scope. It's just not possible to make a game of that size. It would be too massive.

@TheRetroPrime Ocarina of Time isn't a RPG, so it's hard to compare to the two. And taste plays a much larger role, along with nostalgia. FFVII is my favorite game of all time. Is it the best? No, it's not. There is no best game, and I'm getting sick and hearing over and over that OoT is the best game ever made. So stop this damn tribalism, and appreciate both games, as they are clearly (no matter which one is superior) superb games.

@dtdshow i pity people who think graphics make a game, if theres no story, no feel for the world around you (in game), no amazing music, then the game is definetly not all that great, however FFVII easily did all this, well back then the graphics were amazing, but those dont even matter, it has great characters, great story, amazing music, it all fits so damn perfectly, im glad i have the game still, ive played it so many times =')

@MrMilo13 So the first battle is unwinnable, that's one of your major beef's with it? I never used that method of wailing on my own team, I just legitimately grinded. Also, never had a problem with the monsters suddenly being insane. Maybe I had a better experience with FF2 because I played the GBA version and they fixed some things. I don't know. In my opinion FF2 may not be the best but it certainly isn't one of the worst. At any rate, lets agree to disagree on this topic.

Regardless of how good FFVII stands up to the test of time, or against it's peers in the FF game series, there's no denying that for a lot of gamers, it defined a huge part, if not all of their early gaming career. I know it colored almost the entirety of my childhood, which, for myself and I'm sure for a lot of other fans, is enough to make it hold merit all these years later.

FF7 haters are a reactionary measure by an indifferent group of people who were uncomfrotable with the fact that certain people have been content to soundly see perfection where imperfections lie. As has been said already; nothing is perfect. And though I myself, when younger, might have felt a slight twinge at the game being presumed almost 'perfect' in normal esteem, this was dispelled when the hate force began to rise. This game is clearly closer to flawless than it is flawed.

Sure FFX and XIII in my opinion were great games as well, but they missed what VII and VIII drew me in with, cause I loved those two to the point I played them four times each. But Elder Scrolls, Dragon Age, Fallout 3, simply amazing.

@riznich Say what you will. I don't think Final Fantasy VI is the best game ever. It's not the best RPG ever, either. I prefer it over the rest in the series, but saying it is the most overrated game in the series is not true. Final Fantasy VII and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time are the most overrated games ever made, therefore rendering your point moot. They're not bad games by any stretch, but they aren't perfect, as most reviews of them suggest.

Love it or hate it, the Materia system was AWESOME. Easy to use, easy to level. Something that they lost in later games in my opinion. I wish they'd revisit FFVII and release an updated version for the PS3...my PS2 broke and now I have a copy and no way to play it :(

Every time I tried FF8, I stopped play because I was bored and couldnt test the right way(I picked French version, wich was 50hz/ slow instead of playing US version 60hz/faster) Since then I never really liked FF8. FF9 was really GREAT and is underated. If I shall pick a number from top 100 pts, FF7/FF6 would be at 95 and FF9 90 FF5 and FF4 80, FF8 60.. (But if I don't take my personnal feeling in account, it will have 80) FF12 85 I hated FF10 so cant rate. P.S: I know nobody will read this..

+1 Elmondark, Although I really love FF6, dont ask me wich one is the best between this one and ff7. I just love them both as they are my favorite. I started with FF6 but didnt finished, cause at that time I didnt understand english very well and frustrated to play.. Then ff7 was awesome, I bought a ps1 only for that game(was a Sega Saturn protector.. ^^) Then ff5, wich was great as a game, but the story was not deph and kind of simple. I think the first impact of this song came from the fact that this was the first new song you'd heard for a hell of a long time. You'd gotten used to the town music, overworld music, action music, battle music, boss music etc...then suddenly, this tune comes out of no-where and you're like "Bwuh? This is.....interesting." Of course, nostalgia now dictates this music is important for another reason.

The whole atmosphere at this point in the game was one of suspense, and this music caught the mood perfectly. The fact that you're just a short distance south of the snowfields adds a chilling tone to the land here. Makes me think of hiking up Mt. Hood as a kid, up on rocky ridges that were just a short distance below the timber line and the snow line. The land near the Forgotten City is very subalpine or subarctic looking.

4) the materia system was something that has nver ben used in a RPG before. i found that no other RPG has a system where you level up/junction items to gain magic has been better. and the plot is far more than just a cute girl who was innocent, and tbh most games dont have a deeper plot than this at all. (2 continued). its not a matter of opinion. technologically the sound track was far behind it's generation. look at castlevnia SOTN. look at panzer dragoon. both of them had actual real-life composed works and used much more advanced synth technology years before FFVII. 3) now, im not saying that technology makes the song better, but frankly most of the songs were not unique, not memorable, not composed with a high degree of complexity and (once again) they were not atmospheric at all.

1) it is not a masterpiece (for the reasons I listed above). just becuase something is popular, that doesnt make it art. Modern warfare 2 sold way more games. so I guess that must mean that its a masterpiece and is better than FFVII right??? 2) the music is anti-atmospheric. in fact, I felt that it killed the mood in many scenes that had potential. it sounds like a someone is off screen with a fife and an 70's keybourd. that style was fine for the 16 bit age but standards were raised by 1997.

well objectively, the storyline is broken, the characters are underdeveloped and the filler side-quests kill the experience. plus the music was sub-par for the console and generation it was on. just listen to castlevania SOTN, panzer dragoon, and countless other sega Saturn titles. FFVII's music half the time was very anti-atmospheric and sounded like it was done on a 1980's keyboard. overall, the music is like the game. shallow, sub-par and overrated. it just wasnt in any way, a "great" game.

I remember this music, my family and I used to live in a old big house in the country. I'd stay up late playing this game and this music for whatever reason gave me the creeps, I'd hear things that were all in my head cause of this music.

Well do you really think the story was as good...or the characters were as memorable...Personally i think there was a lot more of a emotional tie to the characters in 7 than the majority of the others in the series. And i loved 9.

people can speculate what FF was best, but my vote still is for FF7 since it was the first FF i played and loved, FF6 was great, but the graphics of FF7 at the time gave you a more feeling for the characters and the story.

Mhm. VII is indeed timeless, played it through on PS3, and despite it is 12 years old, it´s much better than todays games. Or well, Okami and LPB are completely awesome to, but in different ways. Also they do not have 12 years behind them, so VII, yes it does deserve all cred it gets. In our opinions at last ;)

FFX was good. Would've been worlds better if Tidus wasn't there. I can't believe anyone said X is equal to VII though...thats just not right. No game, ever, in history, will be equal to VII. Nothing could ever hold a candle to FFVII. In terms of plot development, twists, musical score, character development, and in-game content (secrets and weapons, that sort of deal) FFVII is still definitely my favorite game to date. Even in the world of COD Modern Warfare, Oblivion and Assassin's Creed.

Well if you don't wait, they kill Shadow in FF6. And in FF5 you lose Galuf. And in 4 you lose Tellah, Palom and Porom (they get better), Yang (him too), Kain and Rydia (okay the last two don't die). So really it's not really that unexpected that they took away a character.

I wanted to turn Cloud around and go back to another place (hell even Nibelheim would've been favored), but something pushed me to keep going and try to prove myself wrong. The further I got into the city, the stronger the omen..just had to find out.. Ah, don't mind the rambles. An unforgettable song for an unforgettable game.

I believe this is quite possibly his most successful composition to date. It conveys and evokes all of the proper emotions that the player likely feels at this point in the game. I remember when I first heard this song; I knew something wasn't right... something big was about to happen.

Not sure that's possible. You can listen to the melody and take what pattern it conforms to as the "right" interpretation, but i think the ambiguity might just be intended perhaps to add extra depth to the music. If you could get ahold of Uematsu's manuscripts/scores you'd be able to find out from whatever time sig he specified, but i'll leave that to you ;D

In my opinion and I've been playing games now for some 20 years FF7 is peerless. The story, the characters, the music and the setting. I've played many brilliant games and many that are masterpieces but nothing will ever beat the feeling I got the first time I played this game. Really, it's all just a matter of opinion. Personally, I think that Zelda obviously has a more immersive gameplay experience. I think Zelda might be slightly more fun to play, but in terms of overall story development and depth, I feel that FFVII is stronger.
