It’s really nice seeing all of you guys share similar memories growing up playing such a great game. This song always stood out to me. Hope everyone’s doing what they love, and if not, at least paying the bills and working toward what you love. I don't care what anyone says or thinks about Nintendo now, they still represent Gaming at its purest. That's not to slight Xbox or PlayStation because I love those, but sometimes you get tired of playing games that try to emulate real life and typical Hollywood action flicks. I appreciate Nintendo still trying to capture your imagination and immerse you into a world of fantasy. Two of my favorite games this gen have been the Ratchet and Clank Remake and Sunset Overdrive. PlayStation and Xbox seem to be hesitant at developing more games like this.
Probably because they do not develop games themselves. They are just companies that produce consoles, and from time to time fund game development (like they did with Bloodborne).

Moses Crosbourne All the other Mario enemies really aren't threats, they just slowly walk back and forth and hope they aren't stepped on. They would be easy to take care of in real life. But the eel? Naw. Imagine swimming down to a coral reef and, peeking out of a hole, is 2 gigantic eyes and a huge set of teeth. Next thing you know, Unagi the Eel is lunging at you, trying to kill you. Terrifying.

when i think of this song it reminds me of the innocence. childhood innocence and the what i have lost. life can be good. i'm always so confused by people who say life is good all the time, though. i am over thirty years old and i only have a handful of memories where my life didn't suck. one of the times where it didn't suck is when my parents were giving me a stable household and a N64 along with this game, playing it, with gameshark, back when pokemon cards came out and obsessing over collecting holographics. learning at school becoming well-rounded and alternately going outside in the neighborhood to play with fellow neighbor kids, having routines, life making sense then -- going to middle school -- coming home -- going to sleep, then doing it all over again. Life was good then. then it stopped being good and i dont' know why. I just wish i knew how to get it back or if it's possible.

@Dr. Cardus no galaxy was not like that, good game yes but not like mario 64. in galaxy you jump from small planetoid to small planetoid and can fall into the abyss very easily. mario 64 felt like true open worlds, large play spaces. it felt bigger to me.

I'm turning 25 this week myself... the years I played Nintendo 64 games right as they came seems so long ago! I can't be the only one who was terrified of that eel as a kid! I guess it was a combination of my uneasiness in water levels (where I'm out of my element) and first seeing his scary eel face poking out of that window in the sunken ship that did it. I could force my way through the missions, but I just wanted to be done with the Jolly Roger Bay as quickly as possible lol.

Oh gawd I so feel your trauma. The eel scared the f*** out of me when I was a kid too. It's weird. I was fine with the man-eating piano, but dreaded getting that star on the eel's tail every time I replayed the game. The DS remake made the eel less scary thankfully.

Actually, now that you mention it, yes, because I used to be afraid of this level in Super Mario 64, because of the sharks and the eel. When I was young, underwater games freaked me out. Not all, but I can remember a few specific games that did.
@xxhardforcorexx I have a weird phobia with gyrating water; it wasn't the shark or the stingray that freaked me out (though I totally understand) but the gate that opened after you got the star on the submarine. If you got too close, the abysmal gate (now open) would suck you into the darkness, and then you would find yourself in the moat outside the castle; not sure why, but that scared me (and still kinda does lol)!

Games like this and Zelda and FF I believe are inspirational. The same way as a good book or movie can be inspirational. I don't get the same feelings from CoD and Battlefield, though I have spent my share of time with those games. I agree that it is definitely better for children to have Mario in their lives than not. When I have kids, he'll be as much of a household name as Oliver Twist and Frodo Baggins.

the entire SM64 soundtrack is amazing. Even though the sounds they used were totally 90's, it sticks out like a sore thumb in soundtracks and thus is really memorable.
well, if you suck at cod it can be very very very frustrating to play online, of course generally speaking the series is a fun set of games but I think less people are interested in the concept of it, it's something you can easily view as just running around for 10 seconds and kill or get killed immediately. The first time I played modern warfare 2 was on a console with 3 other friends and for the most part we had no experience with the game and THAT was a ton of fun.
I think games being realistic are only nice in the right setting, for example compare something like spyro's AI to banjo-kazooie, where in spyro all the enemies are waiting for you and respond to every move you make, and in banjo the enemies just sit around and only notice you when you're an inch away, the realism kind of adds immersion to the game, or take goldeneye 64 vs. F.E.A.R., the newer AI is more challenging because you can't just wait above stairs, but either way you feel like a badass
I can kind of agree with you. The thing is, Mass Effect isn't the best example given that it takes place in a distant future world where you're fighting aliens... not exactly realistic. I was thinking more of games like Call of Duty, which are literally about contemporary, nightmarish war.

What is wrong with CoD? I bet you haven't even played it yet. I've played mario and pokemon for years, and I can't deny, those were the best games I've ever played. But the thing is, is that it's all about the community. All my friends moved on, and started playing cod, so I did too. It's just really fun to play cod together. And I bet that when I'm older, I'll also miss the times I've had with cod just like with mario and pokemon. Just because games are different doesn't mean they're bad.

Okay, to clear things up: I get the feeling that everyone prefers pre-PS3,Wii, and Xbox games BECAUSE the graphics are very doable and nothing too crazy. The games feel naked in a way that makes you use your mind a bit instead of being spoonfed "DUH GRAFIX", which leaves a stronger mark.

Hmm I've never though about this. But you've got a point; I have loads more fun playing Pokemon, Zelda, Mario, Advance Wars and Chrono Trigger than any 'realistic' game. Of course it isn't always like that, I've spent literally months in Sim City or Transport Tycoon.

"what the fuck is that?" i felt so embarasses. i couldnt be bothered explaining what it was as she probably wouldnt understand. at to top it off a friend of hers asks me if i play cod. -_- it seems like cods the only video game kids now about these days. well they did mention mario but the fact that she had no idea about the classic games is sad.

Yes, I agree. I was teased because I didn't like CoD as much as everybody else, and I was bullied because I liked Nintendo and Mario. My newspaper, The 'Shroom, got ripped up by somebody once when I went to the bathroom. When I got back, it was in pieces. I don't hold a grudge against the Xbox or the PlayStation, but I don't like shooting games because it brings back bad memories. Please feel free too dislike this comment, but it's my own feelings. Hm, I grew up with the classics, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy a round of CoD every now and then. However, shooters are mainly just time wasters or something I can play with friends who aren't as big of gamers as I am. When I want a true gaming experience, though, I can always count on Mario, Link, and the rest of the crew :)

I think that the small levels raised the pace of the game because you get a couple stars and then go onto another level right away. As opposed to lingering on one stage for a while. Also, because of the linear design, you're almost constantly moving to a new area. In Mario 64 There's a lot more backtracking, especially when it comes to the red coin and 100 coin stars. I would compare Mario 64 to Banjo-Kazooie and Galaxy to Crash Bandicoot. Either way they're both awesome.

Mario 64 is slow paced??? are you joking right now? Go watch siglemic play SM64 then fucking tell me its slow paced. Wanna know why no one speed runs galaxy games? because THOSE games are too slow paced. Yeah galaxy did have more levels, but most of them had 1-3 stars, meanwhile every level in SM64 had 6 stars. So if you prefer quantity over quality then yeah, galaxy is the game for you.
While I also PREFER Mario 64 because of the open levels, the Galaxy games are definitely better. A lot of people would rather have fast-paced platforming than slow-paced platform/exploration. Galaxy is sort of like the 2D Mario games just in 3D. Overall, Galaxy has much better pacing than 64, the controls are smoother (aside from the occasional gimmick stage), and there are a lot more levels with more variety.

not the way they did it. In SM64 the overworld was a huge castle filled with secret stars and secret levels. In galaxy you don't get to explore at all, theres the tiny ship with almost nothing on it and the linear stage progression. Yeah they're doable, but so was superman 64. And I don't want a game just to be doable, I want it to actually be fun too. Apparently thats too much to ask here in 2012.
Galaxy had just as much variation when it comes to levels as 64 did. I do not really see what you mean by 'boring overworld', I find space to be much more exciting than a normal kingdom on earth, but that's just my opinion. Also, the motion control missions were doable, and the fact that they actually existed is something 64 doesn't have as far as I recall.

Super Mario 64 really was such a wonderful and creative game with gorgeous level design and music to back it up. I think my favorite part of the song is when it begins to quicken the pace from the 1:30 mark or so
Sure, so there is something about Mario 64 that you like better. I'm just saying that since you prefer 64, it should be better from your perspective too. About the nostalgia factor, I guess if nostalgia is truly the main thing that makes you like 64 better, you could claim that you prefer 64 but think Galaxy is a better made game. But still, from your 1990s perspective, you'd think that 64 is better for you and maybe Galaxy is better for someone who grew up with it in the 2000s.
What you've said is reasonable for games that are categorically quite different. It's possible for you to prefer the games that you play over God of War and still see how others could like it. But we're comparing two games in the same genre, 64 and Galaxy. So, if you genuinely prefer 64 over Galaxy, then 64 must have better qualities in your perspective and you should consider it to be a better game. Others may disagree, but as I said, there's subjectivity even within genres.
In your example, you'd be saying that the levels in 64 are better than the levels in Sunshine, not that 64 is overall better. But what about something like gameplay? That's more subjective and can't really be quantified since different people look for different things and have inherent biases. So, unless you can somehow correct for your individual bias, which I think is very hard to do, I don't see how you can prefer one game but still think another is better.
Better in what respect? I agree that there are objective components of any game that might be better than in other games, such as the quality of the graphics, but to say that a game overall is better requires subjectivity. I could tell you that OOT is better than Superman 64 since it has better graphics, but you could always come back and tell me that you enjoy the gameplay of Superman better. If you tell me that one game is overall better than another, that can only be your opinion,
I also thought that Galaxy was too easy. In terms of overall levels, it may be longer, but there are no parts of the game that make it especially challenging, whereas Mario 64 did have such parts. Even the 100 coin and red coin stars, though occasionally monotonous or trivial, were usually fairly difficult but fun. Also, if you prefer Mario 64, how can say Galaxy is better? "Better" is just a matter of preference. Just because one has more levels or variety doesn't make it better.
Obviously it's a matter of opinion, but the majority of people who I talk to who played Mario 64 when it came out and then played the Galaxy games liked Mario 64 better. The game was more challenging, the levels were better designed, and the fact that you could just use a standard controller and not the annoying Wiimote was great. I really can't see how anyone couldn't like Mario 64 better after playing both.
They're good, but not the same as Super Mario 64.
The pure enigma that is created in the mental capacity of the player because of this track is why it is so great. Not to mention it is quite sootheing.

the first MG is good, even if it's way too easy, but the sunshine and 64 were better, more open. The 2nd galaxy is a joke, easy as hell, and with 120 useless green stars.

the ds version kinda sucked. 64 was how the game was meant to be played. Adding in wario and lugio was meh... I did like the minigames though. that was a great addition.

I will be 26 tommorow. I am still scared of the eel and I have yet to be able to play a game/level underwater without being scared out of my mind probably because of this game. FPS games are the worst, you just turn around slowly in the water and a floating whatever with a bunch of teeth is in your face about to eat it. Same thing in DOOM and DOOM II, I cant beat those games because they are so damn scary. Headphones, monster noises from a far, open a door and boom, a cacodemon is in your face.

I might not be the best in platformer games, but if there is one thing I always love to appreciate, it's the music. I always push on to find many more pieces of great music. Luckily, this masterpiece came at a really early stage, which just pushed me to keep on going. Overall, Mario 64 is a dream to play through. Why can't we have more of this?! Not to say modern music sucks, we still have Koji Kondo, Yoko Shimomura and Junichi Masuda with us.

I'm starting to become a bit more of a Modern Gamer. I have FPS games, which I enjoy. But as fun as they are, they don't beat the powerful emotion that retro games like this capture. I'd much rather play only SNES or N64 era games for the rest of my life than next-gen games. People say I'm too young to be a 90's kid, being born in the mid-to-late 90s. But hey, even if I missed out a little, I'm dedicating a large part of me to reliving it as best possible. Games come and go, but these never die.
Man, this music brings back some memories. I used to play this level and the level with the giant eel in it. I forgot what it was called, but I know it was Course 3. And the Aquarium had this music too. It's just so peaceful, ah, I just might fall asleep to this peaceful 10 out of 10 tune.

The reason video games 'suck' today is because they've moved far from the personal leven that they had before. Now that there's online gaming, pretty much every game, even the single player oriented ones, are done so with a community in mind. In the glory days, with games like OOT and Paper Mario, Donkey Kong 64 and Sonic Adventure, they created a world that people can get lost in. While there are some exceptions nowadays, most games now are flashy and purely for community. I miss the old days

You bet that there were a bunch of games that were trying to take its place. How about Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero, Tetris. Super Mario Bros, and Super Mario 64? All starts of oversaturated genres. Hell, 2011 is probably more imaginative than the 90's, with the rise of indie devs and all. It's be nice if you can see games without a rosy tint.

If you happen to have Atmosphere or Omnisphere, the patch "Lucky Lyle's Lead" sounds really great for the melody in this track. I recommend modifying it so there's no pitch ramp on the attack, but whatevs.

Mario 64 is defiantly one of the defining moments of the millennial generation. The silent generation had the moon lending, the boomers had the Vietnam, gen-x had... uh... whatever they had....(woodstock?), we've got the good ol' 64. And, to me, Mario 64 is the crowning jewel of the days of the 64.

@ryan9169 im not 11 but i think that there is a substansially larger amount of good games from the 80s and 90s. Sure the past eleven years has had some really good gemes like shadows of the collosus and zelda twighlight princess, but most current games are either gta style gmes, first person shooters and overly violent zombie shooters. Sure the 80s and 90s were full of failures (smb movie), but they came out with zelda oot, super mario 64 and the three good sonic games.

Little Big Planet maybe but the others are last generation games so you can't really count them in this argument. So you've listed 2 games that could be considered 'classic' from this generation.

So many games, so many unfortgettable, irreplaceable and magical memories... and there are yet more to be made. Nostalgia is truly something that makes you a bit sad and very happy at the same time. It's funny how I played this shit when I was about 10 years old and now that I am 23 I can really appreciate everything about it. Not just because it's nostalgic but because it's good. The nostalgia only makes me listen more, with a new perspective. Without being distracted by the game I am playing.

wow i remember i had a dream when i was about 10, after i had played this for the first time. that night i was swimming in a dream, and this music was there. i was a child, innocent. its very amazing how just hearing this has unlocked a piece of my childhood long forgotten and tucked away. being human is amazing, and so is this song and the feelings it produces.

Am I the only one here who doesn't think video games are dead? Super Mario 64 is my favorite game of all time, but that doesn't mean I don't play new games. Some of my other favorite games are BioShock, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, LittleBigPlanet, Mass Effect, and Red Dead Redemption. There's nothing wrong with getting a little nostalgic when hearing this song (I did too), but to say that there aren't any good games past the N64 era is a pretty bold statement.

If you played them again now you would no-doubt have fun, but nothing compared to the feeling of embracing new technology for the first time.

I became a JRPG fanboy because of FF7, can you believe it ? GTA 3 was blamed for the same reasons last gen and as far as I know, it didn't stop devs from making gems on the ps2/gamecube/xbox. If you want to know, yes, I'm tired sick of generic shooters.

@electricmastro Well, that was pretty much my reasoning, what I said. And it's not that I just hate fps fo rno reason, it just really bored everytime I have played one. It gets tiring just playing in the same maps and using the same guns while running around shooting. Golden eye and especially Metroid PRime are really fun for me because it's an actual full game that is more than just the generic fps.

@electricmastro Because Metoid Pirme isn't just an fps, it's a first person sdventure. It's supposed to be like Super metroid, but just in first person view. It's not like Halo or cod where you just run around shoot, then get cover.
@electricmastro I support Metroid (don't know about the others 'cause I've never heard of them). Metroid has a very interesting storyline, since it's not Earth and what you shoot are CREATURES, not humans. So, because Metroid shows imagination, I like it, even being a FPS

I was born in 1969, and I played lots of video games before this one. However, before this game, I was not interested in Mario games. But Super Mario 64 really amazed me. Now, the other day I went to a video game music concert with a philharmonic orchestra playing arrangements of music from various old Nintendo games (like from the Mario, Zelda and Metroid series). I was quite happy that they played this particular theme. Beautiful!
What makes music like this so impressive for me, is the technical limitations put on the artists trying to make good music for their games. Even listening to the transitions in the song, you can hear solutions and tricks performed to make it work properly. Just incredible.

I'm so glad I was born in 1991, meaning I got to experience some of the most amazing games that changed my childhood. Especially Ocarina Of Time and Mario. There was so much mystery and curiosity, it was very magical as I saw everything as an adventure around me. Sadly, alot of younger people will never experience this, as I feel sad now that I'm older and don't have that great feeling I did as a kid, but it's something I won't forget.

@PaxAmericana24 I can relate a lot to what you're saying. The music fitted perfectly with the ambience of the stage, but didn't really stand out. I wouldn't have been younger than 13 when playing it anyway, so... I was just using this video as a springboard to launch my ideas. I'm deeply grateful for the memories, but find memory alone somehow unfulfilling. I don't want to live my life in retrospect, losing touch with the fire within. I have to tend to the blaze, in whatever form it burns.
@Harkz0r Its all true. To be perfectly honest this music didn't phase me so much when I was younger, I found it sleepy and unexciting. It was only after I heard it as I got older that it struck something deeper. As a kid I didn't appreciate the music because I was captive to the 'Magic' of the game. Now, at 21, I am captive to simple memories. Grateful that I experienced the magic when I did though. Heres to hoping our generation builds a better world than whats left to us.

@MathewAlden It's always reassuring to hear opinions like these from a younger audience. It helps to reassure me that I'm not just being hopelessly nostalgic or stuck in my ways. But I think part of the problem is the very nature of -what games are- is changing. Because they are such large-scale commercial projects now, they can be very refined and cinematic in presentation, but can also lack a lot of the spontaneous creativity and charm that comes from a bunch of programmers playing with ideas.

By far one of the most amazing songs I've ever heard for a Mario game. I'm 17 now, I remember playing this when I was 4-5. I didn't even know how to read the dialogue so well in the game, but I still enjoyed the hell out of it. Every time I hear this song i just pick up SM64 again and play it. This song just gives me the most nostalgic feeling ever. This was one of my childhood games and the memories that come back between me and my dad from time to time are worth it.

Wow, rehearing this song is so refreshing. I remember being on primary school and playing this without having to worry about anything. Also the Eel scared me, I remember i onced dreamed about it, I think it was like I was playing Mario and on the courtyard were the boo's were; the Giant Eel was on the floor like dead and it really scared me :P

@camgan1 yea, i get that, its just alot of old nintendo games in those days were outrageously designed due to the lack luster knowledge of how to create games, it didn't stop many great games from appearing, but still the overall feel from anything that era is generally frustration, frustration and kicking music
@masterofdoom5000 N64 was great but I was born in '91 so my shit is Super Nintendo. My cousin is a few years older than me so his childood memories are all about NES. Nintendo used to be the shit. It started going down hill with the gamecube but Nintendo still releases awesome games like Twighlight Princess every once in a while. Its just a shame that its not how it used to be.

I have grown up with Mario. Its all I knew as a kid. I remember the day I first jumped the bridge and killed Bowser in SMB1. I remember getting the f*cked up ending in SMB2 (a dream?) and finding all the warp zones in SMB3. Super Mario World literally took me a whole year to complete. SM64 in My opinion is one of the most epic games ever created and it was revolutionary for its time. Every time I see old game footage or hear some of the music, it takes me back to better times. Cheers to Mario!!

@SuperAwesomeTiago I feel you man. My family was so poor, that by the time we had money, N64 is almost obsolete with the coming of the GameCube. I ended up getting Super Mario Sunshine, which was hands down a massive portion of my childhood, but I always wonder what would of happened if I got N64 earlier.

How do you think those memories were ever formed in the first place?
It is perhaps one of the greatest tragedies of the human condition that we should ever grow up to lose that spark of magic associated with early childhood but it seems to be an inherent biological truth. I think back to games like Parasol Stars and Mario Paint and know for a fact I will never experience the world through the eyes of a 5-year-old again.

@68kenton Yes. Games actually had COLOR. I mean, look at all the new games. They're always so dark and very monochromatic. Sometimes I just wanna see something aesthetically pleasing, you know? Not grainy, same-color schemes (Halo, Call of Duty, God of War, etc.). That's why I hook my 64 up and enjoy a good childhood again. :)

@mootime I think galaxy did a good job. it wasn't brilliant like mario 64 was to me, but I was 13 when I played mario 64. life just isn't as brilliant as it was back then anyway lol. galaxy was a worthy successor though. I can see youngins playing that as their first mario game and it leaving nice memories on them. so when games are 4 dimensional they can look back and say "remember how sweet mario was when it was 3D?" and a NES is just a toaster that doesn't cook bread properly to them.

FUN FACT: The first time you play this level, it is darker, and there is a thick layer of fog. This effect is never seen again for the rest of the game, even if you replay the first level. That said, I made a new file every week just to see it again...

Our grandparents' generation had television just come out and were generally in the war and they are proud of it. Our parents' generation had adversity and are proud of overcoming it with hard work. And our generation has fat people, intolerance, and overall, they care less about their futures. But the thing that we can be proud of, is the fact that we have this. Video games, but more specifically nintendo 64. This song makes me tear every time I hear it due to the nostalgia.

@Remolizzo i never owned a N64, but my neigbor had one, and it was in those years when i had A LOT of free time (7-11 years old). i also borrowed it 1 or 2 times. i have no idea how many hours i played Mario64, Goldeneye64 and Pokemon Stadium on it, but believe me, it was a lot and the n64 is my childhoodi will never forget the N64. 2 bad you can't find them anymore.

It totally takes away the typical ADHD mindset of most games and you just want to.... swim across that shore see what's on the other side of that boat find where that underwater cave leads Its also awesome how the music changes as you go underwater....anyway best mario game for me hands down. It's simply in its own league, calling it a platformer is a misnomer imo. It's an adventure game.

Same here dude, there are many games and consoles I wished I had experienced, Playing games when you're a child have a different effect over playing them when you're older, you see things differently, do things differently and the nostalgia always brings you back. I was born in 96' but I wish I was born earlier, to experience more of the 90's gaming magic. Many kids back then were addicted to games, and game companies wanted to make good games then money. I wish they were all like that now.
Man these games were the best. Super mario, Donkey kong, DX ball, pac-man, zelda, mortal kombat, street fighters. Never will be forgotten :']

@MidgeyMe My friends think i'm crazy for not having Black Ops or World of Worldcraft, and they think Spyro the Dragon and Mario are for little kids. Seeing as they've never actually PLAYED Spyro or Mario or Zelda or anything actually good, I don't see why they say anything in the first place. Another thing is when people sell their best systems just because something "new" is out. they always end up missing them like crazy and chasing them down on ebay. I was born in 97' so I have to, sadly.

@BuySomethingWillYa I know what you mean. The most recent game that kind of gave me hope for modern games was Uncharted 2. There was just something about that seemed like a modern version of a game that would have been made back then. But yea, the NES probably still stands as my favorite console. The music, the gameplay, the characters. Everything about it is great. Now its just, copy and paste a concept and change some characters. No originality left.
One word:Nostalgia, i had forgotten about these songs during n64 and supernintendo times. But as soon i hear them i can instantly remember what it was playing these games. The thing is when i listen to the songs it doesn't seem that distant but in fact it is. These games just gave you an unexplained feeling, they were not just fun.

Im really glad to be born in 1990 because I could play those games and it was great... noting I say can trade this golden age of games to this new one... I wish I could be only a boy to only have to do is playing my old games... but now I'm 20 and only see games that only care about graphics and with no 'soul'
i was born in 1996, i grew up watching my mom play this, zelda and other games, i love those games, i bought them all and play them to this day, the new games arent the best hings to play, i do hope for a return of "good" games n64, snes, nes, dreamcast, etc had really well made games :)

@MidgeyMe Well I was born in '91 and grew up with the N64. You can still relive these golden years with emulators or by simply buying the old games/units! We still have all our old gaming equipment (thank god). It's never too late! I wish I was born in the 70's or 80's cause the 80's is my favorite decade....but sine time has past, we have so many wonderful things created from that time that are left over & here to stay. So in essence, I can choose to live my life like I was living in the 80's.

@MidgeyMe I have to believe that some of my attachment to the Nintendo canon games comes as a result of nostalgia. I'll never get the chance to be 8-12 and play games again, and as a result, I've just about given up hope of attaining similar gaming euphoria. The way games are marketed and reviewed nowadays, we're taught that EVERY game has some sublime experience to offer to everyone, when in actuality, a lot of pieces have to fall into place for that to happen on an individual level.

@BuySomethingWillYa Disagreed. Video games have the potential to become better than ever, with better sound quality, storytelling potential and visuals (and not just graphics, visual style). Some games don't always use this potential, but some games, such as Okami really do. Retro Nintendo series' are always going to seem more magical to us, simply because they stuck with us, and those memories will never be replaced. I agree with some of your criticisms, but I'm not losing faith yet.

I remember being a little kid, and my sister would let me play SM64 on her N64, and this music used to sound weird to me. Now that I'm a freshman in high school, I now absolutely love this song. Just listening to it brings back the good memories. Screw MW2 or Galo Reach. This is where it is all about!

Dire Dire Docks was my favorite Mario 64 level. Aside from the music, it was so awesome because it showed the "power" of N64. I put power in quotes because obviously, compared to a console like PS3 N64 is weak...but after a childhood filled with 8 and 16 bit systems, the N64 seemed to be the pinnacle of gaming.

This level... amazing, and I remember the feeling of seeing a giant fish coming out of the bottom of the lake! It always gave me the chills. Really... I miss those times so badly that I wish it was 1996 again :(
I started playing this game when I was three, and I've never forgot it. There's something magical about the N64 that's hard to explain... perhaps its the nolstagia? But, if you've never owned one, you've missed out on all the great games. Consider buying one.
@TempestDust Yes, the fact that this music was "context sensitive" was a huge part of the genius it held. That was always my favorite thing about it as well; I love that concept. I recall NiGHTS into Dreams and Ocarina of Time also having context sensitive themes and I loved how it was used in those also.

This song in particular can suit several moods. It kind of gives off a magical undertone of discovery, as well as some sadness and a bit of happiness as well. It's like it's saying, "Don't worry, everything will be ok".

@BuySomethingWillYa I think the experiences we have with games such as Mario 64, Ocarina of time, etc. only stay with us the way they are because we were children when we played it. Sadly, I don't think we'll be able to grab that experience anymore, not while we continually grow up in modern society. The children of today, growing up with games like COD or Halo, will eventually feel experiences towards those games as we do towards Mario 64 now.

Playing Mario 64 felt like discovering a whole new world for the first time. I just loved Dire Dire Docks because of how cool and fluid it was to just swim around. I literally spent hours in Mario 64 just running and jumping with no real point. Same for the Zelda's on n64. Only Super Mario Galaxy has really recaptured that feeling for me since then.

As if the song isn't wonderful enough in itself, the thing that struck me the most the first time I played SM64 was how the atmosphere of the music changed depending on where you were in a water level. Take the underwater cave with the drums, for example. Damn I miss the times when videogame music was built around MELODIES.
Love this music theres just somthing about it gives that sort of magical and mystical feeling to it that you can never forget even if you wanted to. This might just be my favourite song EVER if not its certainly in my top 5.

@SolidMike84 Actually, I saw your point of view from the beginning...I would've elaborated a bit more in my original post but the character count got in the way. XD Personally, I kind of feel the same way in regards to today's games, but I view it as a case of just getting older and not being as easily impressed as we used to be. I believe that from an obejective point of view and with the exception of the rise of shovelware, games haven't really gotten any better or worse.

As a ten year old who grew up with the N64, I was incredibly giddy over the Gamecube's launch (I still remember its smell!) and obsessed over titles such as Melee, Pikmin, Animal Crossing, Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker. At the same time, I was experiencing older titles such as Earthbound, Kirby Super Star and Mario 64 itself. At that time, I never thought the magic was lost...I felt the same magic and nostalgia that older video game fans claimed to have. :)

This level catalyzed my enormous love affair with the sound of a MIDI Electric Piano. However, it was one small but vital link in a big chain of obsession for the brilliance of Nintendo's composition.

oh. my. god. i remember beeing like 7 years old. ive been to this toys'r'us kinda store every 2 months or so and they had a N64 for kids to play with this game and exactly this lvl. I usually spent an hour on the game before my parents came to tell me that we had to go home again i miss those times. :(

@RoxProMix If a situation is 'dire', it normally means that danger or misfortune is close. For example, if someone told you that a bomb was about to go off, they would have given you dire warning or a dire message. Or if you hanging off a cliff by a rope and it was beginning to snap, it would be a dire situation. The classic example would be the end of the first Italian Job :D And a dock is where boats leave from and go to :D

@SolidMike84 My idea is that, the "magic" was there purely because it was a cherished childhood memory. Theoretically, this "magic" you felt that was within the SNES and N64 games could be felt by a child playing Gamecube or Wii games therefore the only reason you feel the "magic" is gone in the more recent games is because... you've grown up.

N64 was the last Nintendo console that made me feel the...Magic Mario & Zelda in particular Snes made me think that they couldn't possibly make anything better, but then came N64 and I got HEADACHE after playing Mario for 1 hour...1 HOUR! And I'm a pretty long term player! XD Not saying that GCube or Wii didn't have any magical games (mostly Zelda) But the magic was no more...Sad but true This is one of those last treasures that I hold dearly
I was in sixth grade when this game came out, but I didn't really get to play it (or any N64 game) until I was in college. I didn't have an N64, and none of my friends did either. Eventually I found a used N64 freshman year for 20 bucks (!) and it came with this game, so while I don't really have warm fuzzy nostalgia for the game, it still consumed several weeks of my life.
I miss it 2... I wanne get younger not older:(

@jizzlei976 That's because most people agree that some Nintendo systems are weak. What they don't see is that Nintendo gives us games with heart put into it, not overly dramatic graphics. Also, the Wii just has a bad rep because there too many third party companies working with it and people obssessed with graphics say it has bad graphics.

I've always liked Super Mario 64's music, but I've never really thought of this song as "video game music". Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't prefer any other song to be played in this level, it's just something I've thought since I was six years old.
@JediPrime7 But the thing is, often times when developers throw their best at us in hopes of pleasing us, there are hordes of pricks who think they are "pro critics" because they say that they hate every good game that they buy and there are flocks of mindless sheep following those assholes. People nowadays think that if something isn't completely revolutionary, that it's an awful sequel, yet when it changes the slightest bit, they hate it even more.

@JediPrime7 nowadays its all about graphics and new designs and who can come up with the best of something before someone else. when before it was all about having fun and enjoying the games u played sure some sucked ass(visit the Angry Video Game Nerd for that) but they were fun to play and to just enjoy and i wish designers can do that now

Ahhh, I remember borrowing the N64 from my cousin. I played this game nonstop. Completing it made me feel good and empty. It was the first game I had ever completed. As I watched the credits roll by, tears came into my eyes and I let 'em go. Today, the N64 has been given away, and no video game music will ever compare to what I consider the 2nd Golden Age of Gaming. (1985-2000)
@JediPrime7 You're absolutely right. There are a few good games out there today, but nothing like what we grew up with. Count yourself lucky to be blessed that you grew up in that era and do something to change this one. That's why I make games; to bring beauty and meaning back to an industry that's growing stale.

ever noticed that at the start of the level when you jumped into the water some strings always started to play .. and whenever you jumped in the always seemed to blend smoothly into the theme music..
i had nightmares about whenever your tried to go into a door that you didn't have a key to and bowser laughed. it scared the crap out of me

This was the first game I ever saved up money for. I was nine-years-old in 1999 and had a Nintendo 64 with Banjo Kazooie and Diddy Kong Racing. This game didn't have the huge impact on me that Banjo had, but it certainly beats almost any crushing responsibility of being an adult. I started Mario on the NES and SNES, this is the game that made Mario mean so much more to me.

Though simple in itself, it had the ability to keep you addict without getting frustrated at it.....Sometimes I wish they would simply take those good old games, just refresh their graphics and put it back on the Wii....I understand all of you guys when you talk about being nostalgic :)

If the WII came out with a remake of this with the classic controller i would most defiantly buy a wii. This game was just that good. all the remakes i don't think did this justice. The closest thing for me was sunshine. The planet jumping and some other things were a bit of a turn off for me in SMG, it was a great game, just no match for this lolol, will anything be as good as this mario? probably not

I would go swim on Dire, Dire Docks just to listen to this song, and since the drums and strings wouldn't start unless you went further into the map, I would try to synchronize the sound of Mario swimming with the song... good times when I found the score with the progression on the song in it.

Super Mario 64 was my very first console game, and my only game for the N64 that didn't have something to do with Pokemon. I was so overwhelmed by the graphics, game in general, everything, I dropped it early on. I picked it up a few months ago with the full intention of finishing it. Still just as overwhelming as it was a decade ago. (And this is my favorite theme in the game, with the exception of maybe the game select screen~)
Yeah. Ever played WarioLand: Shake it! For Wii? Admitidaly, it's nothing new, and it's way easy, exept for maybe the final boss, but it's done so damn well... It just FEELS right. The graphics, The music, The controls, they all just come together to make a soild game better then the sum of it's parts. I supose, in a way, Super Mario 64 was like that too, huh? Exept for the whole "nothing new" thing... Anyway, Shake it! Feels like some sort of Yoshi's Story sequel: Unorigional, but still good.
Hell yeah. Back then, when you made a game, You had to make it good. REALLY good. You couldn't make your game purely graphical or anything like that, you had to make it make the player feel good. Nowadays, making people "feel good" amounts to doing the same "RunShootTeabag" game we've all played before. Retro, man. It really IS the best nowerdays.

13 years have passed since this was released. I just realized how beautiful games was back then, they had this personality to it, this meaning. Maybe i think so because i was a kid at the moment, but whatever the answer is, this will always be a part of my childhood and i hope people here appreciate the privilege to grow up to this kind of games. I too think video is one form of ultimate arts. Like movies, video is a collaboration of music, artworks and technology. The impact of video is huge too. If done right, a video game could stuck in mind for ages. I've always remembered: FF7 FF8 Max Payne series FFX Metal Gear Solid series Silent Hill 2 Onimusha 2 Call of duty series Mafia Fatal Frame series I think these games are great examples of very dynamic playability, sound track, artistic and storyline.

Yes it was true, for the legends state that this song was composed after a choir of angels sang to the composer. The sheet music, upon its completion, was bathed in a warm, glowing pillar of light. And there was much rejoicing. Recent Mario games seem to have had pretty damn incredible water world music. Let us also not forget Buoy Base in Super Mario Galaxy.

The only thing I find annoying about it is the lack of side specials, and making their normal specials into the side specials in Melee. it gets a little annoying if I use Jiggs and try to use Rollout, and then remember she doesn't have it in Smash Bros(the classic).

All of the old video game music rocks compared to some of the newer ones. You can't find to many good songs like this one. ~_~ Listening 2 this makes me wanna play SM64 and collect all 120 stars again. ^_^
@Primemover: Heh, I thought the same thing. I mean, the music is so (falsely) beautiful, and all of a sudden the fricken eel pops out and tries to murder you. It got so I was terrified to enter the 3rd level.

That's so interesting. I've never looked at it that way. I was probarbly a bit older at that time. I can remember how I allways got very very intimidated by the bosses from Sonic 1.

I seriously got other people to play Jolly Roger Bay for me because that eel absolutely creeped the hell outta me. I don't know why but for some reason it would scare me so bad I couldn't even look at the damn thing much less take a star off his tail.

There are two levels that use this song, Jolly Roger Bay, which is one of the first levels, and then Dire Dire Docks which is a level before the second bowser.

"Masterpiece" isn't exactly the word I'd choose, but it is lovely relaxing music.
Lately I've been using this song as relaxation music, and people have started telling me that I'm much more relaxed nowadays. :D

And i think in jolly rogerbay when u 1st go into the world its just a big lagoon nothing else but as u do more of the lvl u end up raising a sunken ship and lots of things it was very fun and interesting as u found so mutch more than just a lagoon (i am typinh with one hand btw)

dire,dire docks was the level behind the second bowser entrance. It has Bowser's Sub in it.
