I remember buying this game Day 1, so excited to play the sequel to one of my favorites games of all time. The intro with the storybook and this theme actually gave me a good first impression, but it didn't take long for me to understand this was not to be the sequel I had wished for. Still, this theme will probably be stuck in my head forever.

I had the same issue. I was hoping for more Yoshi's Island and didn't get that, but I still have lots of fond memories of this game. To be honest, that's kind of my feelings for everything on the N64 compared to the SNES.

Not having played Yoshi's Island beforehand, I thought Yoshi's Story was decent at release even though it felt short and easy. But as with all games back then I tried to squeeze out all the game had to offer so I set myself the goal to get all 30 melons (not water melons) in each level (all hearts as well) which made the game much more fun, explorative and challenging.

Hot take: this was almost as bad of a Nintendo character assassination as Other M. They took a goofy dinosaur and made him so sickeningly sweet it makes you want to throw up. And unlike that particular version of Samus that Nintendo wants people to forget, they kept this saccharine version of Yoshi. Also this game was piss easy and i was expecting something similar to Yoshi’s Island, which is a masterpiece. Fuck Yoshi’s Story.

Not having played Yoshi's Island beforehand might have enhanced my experience with this game as a kid. I do agree with Island being the far superior game but Story is still a fine game on it's own imo. Not gonna lie and say that nostalgia isn't playing a part in my opinion. I have some very fond memories of Yoshi's Story.

I never owned the game before, but I remember watching my cousin playing it when I was younger and being scared of the scene where the defeated Yoshis are being carried off.
