So, I just finished the main storyline and wanted to wait to play the game before I listened to the music ( so I avoided this video) and my god, this is one of my favorites in the game, if not my favorite. Odyssey has been amazing and I'm excited to 100% in the next month or so

OH YES THANK YOU for putting this on your best VGM list. I couldn’t agree more with your choice. This is hands down my favorite SMO song. And that’s saying a lot for one of the best video game soundtracks I’ve heard.

Some days after I bought my Switch and this game (in a bundle) I traveled with my dad to the other side of the country in our car trough the mountain side and unfortunatelly (or fortunatelly) the gasoline ran out in a foresty path with big pine trees, like the ones in this level. It was annoying at first, but the escenery was gorgeous and it made me feel good. I was thinking in this track all the time while I was exploring the place (meanwhile we where waiting for someone to help us with gas for the car). It was a really magic experience jajajaja I always remember it when I hear this track.

Just like how you have to root around the trash to find a moon, you'll have to root around the trash to find my copy of the game. It really didn't gel with me. Stellar soundtrack though.

I always kinda love how after the first few seconds everything seems to be really low quality and it just gives it even more of that 60s/70s vibe

Surprised to see that you picked this track! Wasn't my favorite (not my style, and also felt kind of un-mario if that makes sense?) but I'd be curious to hear what resonated about this track above the others. I finished the game so long ago now that I'm not sure I can even remember the other tracks!

I think it's the way it plays after you enter the tunnel and are met with the core level (since you start outside in the forest), but also because it's simply such a feel-good track. You're right that it feels un-mario, but that's also what made it stand out in a refreshing way.

When I completed Super Mario Odyssey, I thought that this game was a true masterpiece of a game. My parents recently got me Breath of the Wild for the Switch. Time will tell where BOTW will end up, but I can say with absolute certainty that Super Mario Odyssey is one of my favorite games of all time.

Michael Cockrum Yeah and Galaxy 2 took 3 years lol Plus Switch is more advanced hardware than Wii so I imagine it would take more effort

This is one of the only songs in VG history that I hate which everyone else seems to like That guitar is fuckin annoying, I like the beta better where it's muted

Now that I recently finished (and 100% completed) this game, let me say this: Super Mario Odyssey is an amazing platformer. As much I loved the Galaxy games and 3D Land/World, playing this game confirmed that I simply prefer the open world 3D Mario games. It's the first game to challenge Mario 64 as my favorite in the 3D series, and I'm tempted to say that this game grabbed the top spot. Perfect gameplay, huge amount of content, perfect balance between new ideas and nostalgia for Mario's roots... superb. I do think there were a lot of challenge levels (the ones behind doors) that could have been directly integrated to the levels' instead of feeling like fluorescent bonus rooms, but I do understand how that would have made the level design even harder to put together. While I feel like Zelda still has a lot of room to improve on the BOTW formula (I predict it will be one of my favorite games ever), I feel like Mario Odyssey already achieved near-perfection.

Also, I was pleasantly suprised to learn that this track which was an instant favorite is one of the few composed by the one and only Koji Kondo. He still has it!

This is my favorite track from the game, I never knew it was composed by Koji Kondo! I'm still disappointed that he left the Zelda series, BotW is my most favorite game to date but the music wasn't good imo...honestly after Wind Waker the quality of the music from Zelda went down, I remember how I was looking forward to the OST of every new Zelda game but now I'm kinda hoping for it to be at least good.

Super Fox The music in BotW was never meant to steal the show like it does in all the others (which btw, TP and SS have fire soundtracks imo). You're supposed to feel very alone and like you're hiking through woods irl. That's a difficult feeling to maintain with a melody present. Subtle, soft instrumentals were introduced to make things a little more magical, but I'm glad they restrained themselves to just that. The towns, castle, and bosses have fantastic tracks as the icing on the sound design cake.

I honestly appreciate the choice they went with BotW & how minimalistic the OST was in order to convey the feeling of the world, but at the same time I think even the subtle pieces we hear from BotW were weaker than WW & before games. I also think that TP & SS had much weaker OSTs in general with very few standouts, but OoT, MM, WW, ALttP...are infinitely better imo :)

I also enjoy the game, but I have a real problem with all the repeated filler stars you can collect. The tasks you have to do are always the same and rarely challenging or interesting.

I didn't know that this track was composed by Koji Kondo. I seriously thinks it's one of the best from the soundtrack! There's a reason why he's my all time favorite video game composer.

And yes, this game is extremely good. It basically doesn't have any flaws, and if it has, they are all small ones. I can easily see myself looking back at this game in ten years and remembering all the time I spent playing it. Beautiful stuff!

@SupraDarky Koji is definitely one of Nintendo's lifebloods. What I mean in that is Nintendo wouldn't be where they are today without at least a little bit of that Koji Kondo magic.
