Chrono Trigger was one of my earliest games, and one of my all time favorites. The characters are so unique and fun, the stories for them are cool and the locations are so varied.

It's a software for playing music. Kinda like Windows Media Player. It was very popular back in the days. Like waaaaay back. Probably around 2005 or so (maybe even earlier). Unlike modern softwares, like iTunes and Spotify, Winamp can only play music that you already have on your pc. I remember that Winamp was very early with visualizers, something that is not used so much anymore. I still like the visualizers. Sometimes I put on some old psychedelic old progressive rock or some sweet, chill, but psychedelic ambient and then let the visualizer on Winamp run on a big screen. Ah man that's awesome!

They still update Winamp, but they're not aiming to be like Spotify/iTunes and Pandora. Just another, very good media player. Yes I do, but Winamp take visualizers one step further. Instead of just having bars they have a lot of different animations that move according to the music. I can't really put in words how they look like.

10,000 B.C. was my favorite time period in the game because it had advanced technology, magic, and had a mystical yet otherworldly feel to it that the rest of the game lacked. The future was just crapsack, but it had to be in order to give the rest of the game an excuse to continue whereas the other periods were cliche (nothing wrong with that, medieval times are expected to seem and be medieval for example.) I kinda liked 65 million BC because of the reptile people, but they died out. I think 1,000 A.D. is supposed to correlate to the present despite it being a primitive somewhat post-apocalyptic (fall of Rome and all) time in real life. What I really loved about 1,000 A.D. was the mystics were still alive whereas anything that takes place in contemporary times typically has old mystical races go extinct. Speaking of which this is what makes Shadowrun kinda cool, elves and dwarfs and such live in a near future cyber-punk world. 1999 would have been a very awesome time to explore at least for a bonus level to uncover extra lore, background, unanswered questions, and such.

Chrono Trigger. This game is completely amazing. There's not a thing I dislike about it, including the music. I've never totally finished the game though... Currently trying another runthrough though. Maybe I'll find the time to finish it.

Retrauk This game was built by the Dream Team. Akira Toriyama, Yasunori Mitsuda, Nobuo Uematsu and others. Indeed the best ever RPG of all time (at least for Super Famicom or Super Nintendo).

@jakeman77 A heathen for piracy. :P The hardware's still limited by the fact that the game is mostly pixel art, anyway, so there isn't much you can improve about that. The small screen of the DS does make things a lot more crisp than on a TV or monitor, though, and the second screen is unbelievably useful.

This and Final Fantasy 6 is the greatest RPG of all time. Square Enix...how different you have become over the years, it puts a tear in my eyes thinking back to all those great games you have given us and now you have become another big corporation that has lost its way. I have hope for the future and we will see if Kingdom hearts 3 and FF 15 will redeem yourself in any way.

Once upon a time Chrono Trigger was what one could consider a "AAA" game, but people like you are too stupid to appreciate it. LOL! Are you kidding me? Are you really this stupid? I hate the watered down whitewash of so called "AAA" games, especially AAA wannabe games like half the crap SE is churning out. Yes, that's right, Tomb Raider is meant to be an AAA game whether you like it or not, they took a 90s franchise that was mainstream at the time and slapped a darker and edgier facelift on it. The only thing they didn't do was water it down, which is hard when your source material is "big boobed chick with guns."

Shadow of the Colossus was a PS2, when games were still amazing (and it's not exactly an RPG, it's more of an adventure style) and both Uncharted and The Last of Us come from a great gaming company known as Naughty Dog, which also released amazing classics like Crash Bandicoot and the Jak&Daxter series. What I essentially meant was there not being any good RPGs like the Chrono saga anymore.

This theme was especially memorable as it was the first (and only? don't remember) track in the game that continued playing even into the battle screen, rather than cutting to generic battle BGM. Really gave the dungeon an ominous feel that built anticipation to the initial showdown with Lavos.

No, you really don't, and it's kinda sad. To expand upon what the other person said: Chrono Trigger: Hard to fuck something up when you BARELY CHANGE IT. Arkham Asylum: They took something from a good developer studio and slapped their name on it. Kingdom Hearts: Bad fanfiction material somehow come to life. Tomb Raider: I'm sorry, is this still the 90s when this was relevant? Square has lost it. They need to get crap together and remind everyone why they were once considered top dog.

If your talking about days, the music is (mostly) just much lower quality versions of KH2 songs. And that's fine, I liked KH2's music, but that means days is nothing special in that regard. It had a couple good tracks though, check out MMbu6frlNQc and SJdhNmD8LFc. If you mean the other games, they all had some good tracks. BBS actually had plenty. The KH games have always had good music.

Wait, KH3 is out? I thought that was a ways away. Or are you talking about KH3D? And I guess your right about the spinoffs, but I usually content myself to read plot summaries for them and listen to some of the music. I picked up days - mistake, the game was clunky as hell, and the story was so-so. I heard BBS was good, but I don't own a PSP, so that's out of the question.

Yeah, but the 'spinoffs' are also part of the story, they just tell a sidestory like Chain of Memories is a link between KH1 and KH2. Haven't played KH3 yet and most likely won't do it in the near future either.

Well the way I see it, you can really only count the "main" titles, ie KH1, KH2, KH3. I wasn't really a big fan of any of the lesser titles either, I really just don't count them on the same level.

Please, don't get me wrong, I loved the first and second, but then it just started to drift off. But what annoyed me the most is that each story seems to be on a different gaming platform (DS, Advance, PS2, PS3, the neighbour's toaster). And then they started to shove one character after the next. The story isn't linear, jumping back and forth in terms of timeline, which makes it even more confusing. I like Kingdom Hearts. But only the first two. Good story, music, characters, gameplay.

I agree completely about nintendo and a lot of video game losing their magic, but I'm confused about what you dislike about Kingdom Hearts. It was actually a really good game, which surprised me. The gameplay was simple, but still fun, and I didn't mind the story when it wasn't being stupid as shit.

True, but you have to look really long and hard. Never played it, but I read Witcher fans saying that 2 was crap compared to the first. And who best to judge than fans? RDR... my brother has it, saw it, but it didn't capture my attention spawn... Dark Souls... mmhh... maybe the only one to save the list? I'm very picky when it comes to games. Fun factor, plot, music, characters (development), gameplay, graphics. The order I rate games. Fail on the first three and don't bother showing it to me :|

I heard that rally on so many things before... Homestuck, FF8, FF10 and godsknowwhatelse... and guess what? I tried, I really did, but where people said it would start to be good, I just felt bored and ended up dropping it altogether. Either something is good and catchy from the start or close to it or you can just shoot it to the moon see if I care. Not saying things should've stayed the same, but they did turn for the worse. Too many things missing that are vital to make a game interesting...

This is nothing shit about Square-Enix. Sure, they may not have went in the same direction, but they still make great games to this day. Final Fantasy XIII is proof of that. Yeah, it sure is different, and it's hard to get used to at first, but once you get into it, it was a truly great game. So sad that people don't realize this. Too much time goes into wishing things stayed the same, and not enough time into enjoying other great games.

It's a personal opinion, get over yourself. And no, not everybody played them and I could easily give you a list of people who loved it and others who hate it. Just because you worship something doesn't mean others have to do it as well. Like I said, I liked the first and second, but after that, it just turned confusing and I'm not rich to buy consoles just to follow a gamestory. J&D happens to one of my favorite sagas, Jak2 my fave of all 5, but am I going to trash you for disliking it? No.

I only liked the first jak and daxter, precursor legacy, after that it just went another direction and it wouldnt stay true to itself, it kinda just felt like playing ratchet and clank in those sequels. but seriously, kdh is one of the best games for the ps2, who told you they were bad, that person is obvioulsy lying.

The first one is cool, the second is ok, but after that, it just get's confusing (story keeps going back and forth between the games) and the simple fact that you need different platforms to play the games to actually get the story (PS2, Nintendo, PS3, your grandma's cheese cutter) is ridiculous. Jak&Daxter came out on one platform and did it good, why not Kingdom Hearts as well?

Not really, Square gets the bigger part of the cake, if not all of it, considering that the one carrying Enix's toll was a freelance designer that was working for Enix at the time. You could say 2/3 of the game was made through freelancing, seeing as Toriyama was a freelance mangaka as well :D

The first one yes, the ones that came after have a SquareEnix signature, considering that they merged in 2003 and Kingdom Hearts came out in 2002. Still, I was referring to the whole series, not the games individually. Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts 2 happen to be of my favorite RPG games :)

The original is perfect as it is, there really isn't much to improve other than graphics (which are already great). I personally don't like remakes unless they seem necessary, and Chrono Trigger has aged very well.

That's impossible as Akira Toriyama (the guy I'm talking about) is the father of Dragon Ball and had worked on it since 1984. And Dragon Ball Z's Japanese original run (where he wasn't even involved anymore, to my knowledge) started in 1989 and ended in 1996, whereas Chrono Trigger was released in 1995.

Why don't they make games like these anymore...? It's all about shooting and blowing stuff up and killing... it's like the magic from videogames dissapeared when most companies merged with others like Squaresoft with Enix. Two amazing companies on their own (Final Fantasy and Terranigma), but together just pure shit (Kingdom Hearts [confusing]). That's why I prefer the Wii over PS3 and XBox, with Zelda and Mario, Nintendo still holds the magic of videogames lost in the other two.

I love how you can hear Schala's Theme at 0:30 to 0:50. It really shows that she's in danger and Magus is too blinded by rage for Lavos and Queen Zeal to competently save her. Fun with friends yes but after awhile you get bored cuz the game gets to easy or to stupid (patches, players, Same repetitiveness etc.) ..And the osts in that game arnt that great either. If you want a good shooter ost search up metal gear solid. Atleast that game has some style... Anything that relates to Ct, FF, Zelda, okami etc Or any good rpg game should fit the bill of a "great soundtrack".. While modern games today like you said wont fulfill that :) .

@MrEpicTruth That's a completely unfair comparison dude.... CoD is a FPS war game... do you expect it to have beautiful ballads and heart-wrenching orchestral themes? War doesn't have beautiful music in the background... If you expect your comment to be taken seriously you must compare CT to modern RPG's such as Pandora's Tower or The Last Story. These games ,imo, actually have well done OST... Also, CT is arguably the best OST ever created... so any comparison comes up short ;|

Even with the somewhat simplistic storyline, CT manages to hook gamers until the very end. I never managed to finish FF13 because of all the poorly written dialogues, pointless cutscenes and dull gameplay. The proof that more=/=good.

Some people don't realize that the music for this was generated from the SNES and not a disc. Even the OST when it was released sounded like it was playing on the SNES.

They really don't make game music like this anymore, and it's more of a sign of the times. Back in 8 and 16-bit eras you had to be clever with your song structure and melody because you could only fit so much on a cartridge and the technology was limited. Now with major symphonic scores (many of which are BLAND, IMO) a lot of games miss the pretty melodic element in their music.

They tend to look and sound nice, but the characters, music and storylines tend to be forgettable. (There are a couple exceptions, but not very many.)

This game released the year I was born, and I didn't play it until 14 years later, but it was, and is, still great. Pacing, concept, music, battles, locales, the many endings. It comes together just so very nicely. My second favorite RPG I've played on the DS, and by extension also my second or third favorite game on the DS.

They've changed so much in fifteen years, and the teams of the two games are almost entirely un-related. Just as a for instance, Sakaguchi? The lead designer, founder of the entire FF series? Left Square years ago. Founded Mistwalker. Took Akira Toriyama's business with him, I'll add, and Uematsu's music. I think the rest is best saved for a more private communique, however.

Namco Tales Studio refuses to release HALF of its games to us because of the NA market. There hasn't been a proper Megaman game since X6 (unless you count the new 9 and 10 for Wii VC, which are awesome). I gave up on that a long time ago, they did that to themselves. RE is meh to begin with, has nothing on Square's games like FF and Chrono Trigger.

Keiji Inafune, original creator of Mega Man, just quit Cpacom; Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil), Hideki Kamiya (Devil May Cry), the whole Resident Evil TEAM has been gone for the past several years, and not a single one of them is sorry. They don't see the presence of Halo as the problem, they see the stagnant Japanese market and business model as the problem, and they have made these thoughts known very openly.

Well it's good to hear that some kids still appreciate god-tier gaming. I'm 23 and I remember the first time I played this game and the immense depth and permanence it left with me upon completion. I've never felt more fulfilled as a gamer then in that moment and I have been chasing the CT dragon so to speak ever since. Whenever I get down or feel like I'll never experience such unbridled perfection I just pop this masterpiece back into my SNES and nostalgia SO hard.

Chrono Trigger was, and still is, one of the most 'perfect' games ever made. Compelling story, fantastic music, enjoyable game play, and a great balance between linear and non-linear action. While I may be biased with this music playing and reminding me of the fantastic experiences I've had playing this game, I'm hard pressed to think of a more perfect game off the top of my head.

@ScorchedAndTorched I'm 13 too and i don't judge a game by its graphics(atleast very little) i think Chrono Trigger is one of the best RPGs ever but talking to other people about it they think its boring because they can't play RPGs you need to have the time to actually sit down and play these games i also like FF series alot. There are still some kids out there who don't like games like CoD/Halo/etc, and love retro games like CT/FF/etc, I'm one of them. I'm 14 and Chrono Trigger's one of my favourite games, along with FFVI, Super Mario World, FFVII, and many more...the SNES being my favourite console obviously, haha. Before anyone says "You're too young to remember any of those", my Uncle had an SNES [and other consoles] that I played. Damn Xbots won't play any games without Space Marines/World Wars/"Good graphics".

@MrFinalgamer Pretty much yeah, now each game is about some stupid gimmick that isn't even fun. I hope that square enix learns that it isn't what gamers want. Personally I think they need to stop updating the battle system. It wasn't broken in 1-10 so why change a good thing and make it into complete shit.

@MrFinalgamer The reason they don't make good games any more is because Square merged with Enix. All those final fantasy games (including 10 which I thought was very good) were made prior to square enix. 2003 is when they merged which just so happens to be when x-2 came out and when FF games started sucking. So i guess the only logical explanation is for them to unmerge or demerge or whatever it could be called....lol

No one will ever change my perspective about this game. This game is the BOOOMB!!!!!!! I never even liked RPG until I played it. It gave me the first real taste to a masterpiece in the gaming world. I fought with my best friend as we both shared the game of another friend who didn´t like RPG. I have reached level 99, I tested all endings, I search like mad man to revive chrono & when I came back in time from 2000 AD trip, I was amazed I beat the training robot in 1 hit.

Even though I'm just 13 and I've grown with PS2-3, Xbox/360 and Wii, I still think the NES/SNES/64 games are awesome: -SoM series -Chrono Trigger -SMRPG -Quest 64/Holy Magic Century -FFIV -FFV -FFVI -Dragon Quest -N64 Zeldas and Alttp -Metroid 1, 2 and super. Yep, the 90's were just awesome.

@Alex0Dakaar Amen to that bro. This song instills so much fear into your heart... Even if you've never played the game, you know there's a dark tone to this song. Games nowadays have such bland and miserable compositions that you could just mute the game and play your own music. This is why I'm such a huge fan of the 8 and 16 bit era of gaming. Music meant something back then. It set the tone for each part of the game, and you felt it... Though, CT is absolutely unmatched in terms of good games.

Personally I prefer the past to present in terms of most media not out of nostalgia. I thought that for the longest time, but I got a store a year or two back that sells old games. I buy games for my newer systems, but very rarely and don't find myself coming back often. I get something for say SNES or N64 or Playstation and I find I can't stop playing it! It's got nothing to do with nostalgia, it's got something to do with quality.

The games created back when eye candy was rare and story/music/gameplay had to be relied on to entertain were unquestionably the greatest games ever created. Now developers pour all thier efforts into making a more realistic looking 3d environment and basically drop the story in as an afterthought. Proof? Name a game in the last 5 years that has had a really good ending. If you can come up with more games than i have fingers ill be stunned.

Graphics aside, Chrono Trigger is still a solid game. I'd be more than willing to sacrifice graphics in favor of great story telling and a good soundtrack. Now that's not to say that such games are no longer created, or as entertaining. There are a few shining examples of more modern games I do enjoy. It just seems to me that most of the games in the mid to late 90's and early 2000's are the ones I find myself coming back to, since most others now adays are beat once and never play again.

Let's not forget the slight undertones of racism that the Enlightened Ones had for the Earthbound Ones. The Dark Ages or, "Antiquity" (blegh, it'll always be Dark Ages in my eyes) really did shift the story abruptly but timely, and put the whole thing into a new perspective. Plus, the whole floating continent thing, to escape the ice cold, many millenia winter the Earthbound Ones had to face... This entire story is just brilliant. I can't see how anyone could NOT love this game.

This was my favourite part of the game, you've defeated Magus, found a weapon that can kill lavos. Battling your way through the palace to face him and Queen Zeal, the music and atmosphere is building you up to the final fight. Then he smooshes you in one hit and you're still barely halfway through the game. I love it.

Won't happen, sadly enough. Sure, square sees a pretty penny to be made by making a true Chrono Trigger sequel, but the team that came up with this game has disbanded and half of them don't even work for square anymore. And they even shot down a fan attempt at a 3-D recreation of Chrono Trigger. So they say one thing and do another when it comes to this franchise.

Shows how much you know. The character designs were made by the same guy who made the Dragonball series. The original Chrono Trigger came out in 1995 on the SNES.

Hahaha, the opposite really. It's a really good port of the original (even without them adding much worth noting), and holds true to the earlier versions. The game is still just as amazing as ever.

The port is lacking in new content. Everything that WAS there is still there, and is adapted very nicely to the DS. What upsets me is that they are charging full price for a port whose original is nearly 15 years old. In that time, you think the same people who are making Final Fantasy 13 for PS3 could have made a huge amount of new gameplay for this classic SNES game. But nope.. Just an "Arena" which is an uninteractive and boring Pokemon rip, a dungeon, and sprite swap of the final boss. :(

If you've beaten the SNES version or PS1 version, it's pretty much the same. The new dungeons and "Arena" mode are lacking. Since you don't have a DS already and I am guessing you have played it before if you are mentioning the DS version, I probably wouldn't. On the other hand, if you plan on getting a DS for other games too, or you haven't played Chrono Trigger, the DS version is definitely the one you want to play, and the game itself is AMAZING. Just wish Square put more effort in the port.

lol i still have it. oh btw by extracting i mean saving the whole song on HD without disturbing sounds. heres how to do it: google for the ZSNES emulator, best emu arounf google for chrono trigger rom setup zsnes and load chrono trigger dont make the song you want start yet hit F1 in game to make a capture window appear click "save spc data" force the song to start (like in sound test) you will get a message that the file was saved successfully the file will be in the capture folder

The ending was the two girls are going over a slide show of guys they met and 'rating' them and stuff. Then Chrono comes in and goes "what the hell? let's get outta here!" or something along those lines, I can't remember, but it was so weird to see him talk.

There's only an extremely short span where you can get the Crono talking ending. In 12,000BC, you have to watch Schala use her pendant on the door and attempt to do so yourself, and then go back to your time machine and beat the game WITHOUT powering up your pendant. The ending is Luca and Marle rating all the guys in the game, and Crono running in to tell them to shut up.

you'll have an easier time finding the ps1 version. I'd only suggest the SNES version if you were already a huge Chrono Trigger fan and didn't mind dishing out 75 to 100 bucks just for the cartridge (If you can find one in good condition), whereas the PS1 version you could probably get for 15 bucks (and that's also with the ps1 FFIV)

"Uematsu signed to finish the Chrono Trigger soundtrack after his friend, Yasunori Mitsuda, contracted stomach ulcers." Matsueda was only responsible for the Boss Battle Theme while Uematsu made tracks like Silent Light, Sewers etc. I'm not sure how I'm wrong. ;) I did say Mitsuda made most of the tracks.

Actually, both did Chrono Trigger. Mitsuda made most of the tracks then fell sick so Uematsu took over and finished the soundtrack with excellent tracks as well. CT's music wouldn't be so awesome without the contribution of both.

I really just kind of got sucked into the game at this point. The music combined with how dramatic the ocean palace is just drew me in. This game is great because it leaves things to your imagination as well. this is what got me into RPG's. not paper mario before this, but Chrono Trigger.

Chrono Trigger is one of the latest RPG's I've played. I played it for the first time in 2006 after playing Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy VII and so many others, and I still believe it's the best RPG after Radiata Stories and has the best story ever made.
