I've always seen Dragon Quest as one of my favorite RPG series, but I feel like my appreciation has been growing even more as the years go by. Simple, magical, addictive, "comfort food" games, that's how I see Dragon Quest. Sugiyama's music is legendary.
I'm just waiting for the day we get the Dragon Quest IX remake. That game is my favorite of all time.

Couldn't agree more. DQ is just a good time, hands down. Not to mention I usually play games with the sound down/off but DQ games I have to play with headphones on. Final Fantasy music is great too but these have a way of hitting me in the feels every time.

I've only played DQVIII and as much as I like that game, it's also a very old-fashioned J-RPG, which makes it relentlessly hard at times. Especially as I am used to more modern types of RPG's, like FFVII etc. It's a beautiful game with awesome music, magical atmosphere and beautiful cel-shaded graphics but I found the battle system to be quite boring. The ability to save only in towns doesn't help either.

I really understand what you mean, especially with the comfort food-part. I've always regarded Dragon Quest as a textbook perfect JRPG, as it has everything that makes a JRPG, with still the somewhat cliché adventure-plot and good vs. evil-scene, but still has it's own quirks and more serious themes. It's like you know exactly what you're going to get when you go in, and it's even better than that - but it's still what you expected.
Yea, the games really do have a comfort feel to them.Especially the music.
Neverma managed to reach the tier 3 monster jobs, it's a grindmare to level all the sub ones

Very relaxing. Takes me away from the times I got lost finding those damn land pieces. I think classes took a big penalty like with dq6; dq3 and swords will always be my favorites in the series.
I liked playing this game and this is a nice track but I got so sick of most of the music as it was reused so often

Man dragon quest games are so much fun, I wish they made 10 for the 3ds and a physical mini collection of 1-3 on DS so you can collect them all for DS. As for 7 I need to pick it back up and finish my playthrough.
I love the OST but this game boring me a lot and I don't know why 😢
Because it takes a long time to finish. This was the biggest Dragon Quest game ever made, so far.

Holy shit I love dragon quest
I remember picking this game up since I heard it had a ton of jobs and party setups you could experiment with. And I speedran to get to unlock them as soon as I could, only 18 hours in did I finally finally get to try them out, aaaaaand. I was sorely disappointed. The jobs you are given completely suck, and I get that you start with bad jobs to unlock the good ones but... that's not exactly good design when you take a job that actively worsens your stats, go fight 1000 slimes so you master it and can ditch it until you unlock the better ones. I enjoyed the music, but the gameplay just really didn't hook me.
This of course being the Japanese version, as the American version got lousy synth.
The synth version wasn't that bad. It was actually good
I forgot that I bought this game for the 3ds so thank you for the reminder. As for Sugiyama, I wholeheartedly agree that his music is legendary. It's amazing that he is still composing music at 86 years old.
I've been playing this for a long time. It's like a story every time you play. I just hope I finish it one day haha
This game has a really good OST, but because of how long it is a lot of the tracks get really repetitive for me. Doesn't help that we didn't get the orchestra ost, for some reason.
