Nobody does juvenile adventure themes as well as Hiroki Kikuta.
I've started SD3 a few different times but the dungeons/battles are way too grindy compared to SOM. some great music in it, though.
You're not supposed to grind at all bud, the game follows your own level after each advancement.
SD3 was the pinnacle of the series, to me (though I don't recommend trying to play it without a guide). Amazing soundtrack, and fun gameplay for the most part, at least if you go physical rather than magic. Legend of Mana was fun too, but it's too bad that every game after that has been more disappointing than the last.
Would you reccomend this or Secret of Mana more? Assuming there's a fan translation of this, of course.
There's been a fan translation of this for a very long time. Personally I think Secret of Mana just feels better. Combat seems stiff in this game but I bet the majority of the people will recommend this game over that one because of the class system and the choice of characters at the start.
They are both great, I like SD3 a bit better, because it has more replay value due to the class system and different endings/beginnings depending on characters. Combat balancing is a bit off (there are severely under- and overpowered team comps), but the battle system is still great fun and I liked it better than Secret of Mana's. Great game to play coop with a friend as well, a bit like in the Tales Of games.
@HolySteel I should note that I'm more interested in story and soundtrack than gameplay, if that changes anything.
@Czar Pepé I would recommend SD3 over Secret of Mana. I know a lot of people like Secret of Mana more, but I never really got into it. I played it single player, and co-op with my friends and the story just felt meh to me. SD3's story (and a boss fight I think) changes slightly based on which characters you choose. See with Secret of Mana, you're stuck with the silent protagonist and two supporting characters. I always liked the freedom of choice in SD3, and that each character has their own story. It felt more personal to me
@Czar Pepé Definitely Secret of Mana. Seiken Densetsu III may be superior in some ways, but Secret of Mana is pure magic. Still, I would recommend to play both games.

@SupraDarky I wish that game would have seen the light of day outside of japan, for me it STILL is the better Secret of Mana game.. besides what it brings with that, which feels more "complete" to the first game of the Mana series (not counting the GB one), besides the "bugs" and that the luck in that game (for critical hits) does not work, it REALLY is a good game, even the soundtrack is memorizable
One of the more memorable town themes in the game. This soundtrack really has a style of its own with Kikuta's choice of instruments and what feels like constant reverb. I'm at a point where I want a new game in this series that is really more of the same (based on Secret of Mana and this game) with today's audiovisual power, in beautiful 2D. SE should stop trying to do new things with this series, it almost always failed with Legend of Mana being an exception. Just play it safe.
To be honest, Legend of Mana was nothing to write home about. Top tier soundtrack by Shimomura, though. It elevated that game a good deal for me personally.
@TedKennedyX Tried starting it a couple times, and it fell flat. Then I tried it one more time... and something clicked. The gameplay's not much to phone home about, but boy does that game tell stories! While I wouldn't recommend it for most games, play this with a 100% run walkthrough, just so you can see all the stories they've crafted in that game. It's very, very well done.
