Hong Kong was the best part of the game for me.
Pretty late for this video but I just wanted to say how amazing this song fits in when you first enter the market district for the first time. It captures the enviorment perfectly and it adds suspense to the situation JC is in and how he needs to find Tracer Tong before his Killswitch activates.

I should play this game. So many of these games are on Sega consoles and I was raised on Nintendo and Xbox. I now play PC mostly, so I can get this game on steam!

My only gripe with this game as of yet (aside from the crossbow) is that it's pacing is so slow. I mean I get narrative pacing blah blah, but teasing the edges of conspiracy Deus Ex, in the second of four visits to new york so far, is not making my hooked, it's making me want to shut you up so i can see the rest of the story! apparently just to get to Hong Kong (and I'm told this is less than a 1/4th of the way in) is about 14 hours give or take, and I haven't found anything, but the beginning is just, really slow, and it just doesn't grab me, at this point I'm doing it to see the "best game of all time all years", considering of those 14 hours, at least 11 of them were spent in some New York location, dicking about for NPCs for reasons I don't particularly care about. call me impatient or whatever, but if Deus ex was a TV series, this is the kind of one that you skip episodes of to get back to the interesting stuff which is blocked behind 3 hours of arbitrary boring stuff.

Except in Human Revolution Harvesters in Hengsha kill and rob people of their augmentations for profit. Also pimps force prostitutes to get augmentations (it's implied that they're even forced to get vaginal augmentations to pleasure customers...) Detroit doesn't sound so bad after that. :D

The themese of tyranny, overcrowding, third worldism anda mix of mysticism + alien culture + technology * japan ) will make "Asia" look very appealing for cyber punk genres.

Good question. The observation for that is as a country slowly turns into a first world environment. People tend to be more smart and more forgiving to changes and differences. This is apparent to modern day Japan. China has a long way to go, and to get on a level where Japan is right now. 😁🇯🇵

The PS2 port is actually a good one because you can feel that this was intented to be a PC game unlike Invisible Wars which felt like a Console game from the beginning. But somehow I've got the feeling that they had to cut some parts down and added many loading zones to the PS2 version

Ugh... I'm getting chills and flashbacks listening to this... Interestingly, the broad scope and foreign mystique of this amazing game inspired a hunger in me for exploring the corners of the world, and nearly a decade after playing this game in my freshman year of high school I would end up across the world in Hong Kong, standing in the Wan Chai district and hearing this very song playing in my head.
Haha yeah, the real place has a lot more than about 15-20 people milling about, there isn't near as much neon and color (at least not in 2008 anyway),it doesn't have two rival Triad headquarters within a block of each other, and most noticeably this theme music also doesn't automatically play while you walk around, which was he biggest disappointment :(

The most important thing is not that you go to Area 51 in the game. It's that it's such a realistic depiction. I've been to "Area 51", and it looks exactly like in the game... it's an even better match than Hong Kong.

+AkemiHomura93 I would personally reccomend GMDX over Revision, it keeps the same atmosphere and artstyle of the original game, without adding to much orange light and designs from Deus Ex Human Revolution. It focuses more on gameplay overhaul that graphics improvements, but it still has some nice visual improvements.
@Filthy Swine revision adds much more and 10x more intense, gmdx is just like the others, just minor weapon modifications and shit.

revision is badass , the old levels are more complicated and larger make you experience deus ex again with more challenge , some osts are bad but you can always chift to OG songs from settings.

@Dreadnought That rooftop was tricky to get to. One of the few times where Deus Ex had some platforming, and it was awkward trying to get down without the leg aug, unless you're supposed to go back into the room, in which case I must have missed a key platform or something

a soundtrack is more memorable ifits made in a way that a normal person can hum it, it requires to have a particular recognizable tune, DE1 had a lt of those, HR did not, orchestral soundtracks rarely are like that

Probably because it's not true. I've played through every Deus Ex game and both Deus Ex 1 and Deus Ex HR have great music tracks. The first appeals to the cyber-punk synthetic music which was being explored in the 90s whilst HR appeals to a more epic wide-sweeping soundtrack to capture the more dramatic element of the revolution of cybernetic augmentations. They aspire to evoke different themes depending on the era which they intend to capture.
well imo original was so much better, i liked its atmosphere way more, it was more cyberpunkish, i didn't like linearity of deus ex hr, melee attacks, setting, places u visit and plot wasn't half as good good...
I think the major difference between the soundtracks of Deus Ex and Human Revolution is that the first game was focused on music that set the mood effectively, but was still catchy as fuck, whereas Human Revolution focused entirely on being ambient and understated, gradually fading in with more intensity as you got into gunfights and the like.
I agree, the theme is pretty good. Other than that, though, it's just so "meh"..

Lol, actually I recently bought System Shock 2, and wow, I can play that game with no problems what so ever (aside from shitting myself). I think it's just the aiming in Deus Ex that throws me off. But I'll agree with you about Halo 1 and really a lot of FPS games nowadays. My name may make me seem like a fanboy, but believe it or not I kinda don't really like xbox, I'm more for the pc gaming.

If you install the "New Vision" mod, you'll get updated textures. It'll still look really old school, but it's something I guess. How many levels have you completed? Once you get at least 4 or 5 in, I reckon you wont care about how old the game looks, the story will overtake.
I tried to play this game, but its just so odd for me to play an old school FPS. I like the concept of the game, and I get a lot of the leveling and skills. I just can't really play the game very well. Maybe one day the devs. could remake this and System Shock 2 so that these games have more modern day gameplay. I really want to play through the game, but I'm just having so many problems.

Best 1st person Shooter RPG ever created, great game play, and an complex story line that will keep you guessing, This is one of the few games where listening and talking to random NPC's can give you clues into how to approach missions or what turn the story line will take.
Absolutely. This game is fantastic. The story is great, quite deep and thought-provoking, and there are many interesting characters (particulary the protagonist). Gameplay is also with quite a few interesting features and a great mix of FPS and RPG. The voice acting is quite hammy and cheesy in some moments, but overall is quite good. Graphics are very dated, of course, but look fairly decent.

Dude, the first code you encounter on a safe in Dishonored is 451, just like in DX and DX:HR + Harvey Smith worked on all these games. So yeah, Pretty much. I really enjoyed Dishonored, though the soundscore wasnt nearly as memorable as deus ex.
yeah, it was very deus ex-y, but I'd say it borrowed a lot of elements from bioshock and thief as well
I think Dishonored is a spiritual successor to this game.

Well, PCs are coming back again. The sales are rising like crazy. Experts think at around 2015 PC will be again dominant in terms of sales.
Deus Ex was not only one of the greatest games of all time, it also had an amazing soundtrack.
At least we still have CDProjekt and GOG.com. Developing fantastic PC games and caring about the customers. They due their ports the other way around, probably one of the few who can port something to console without it being a dumb down version. Then they provided us with access to games from that time period and prior... they are brilliant.
It wasn't the golden age of PC gaming, it was the golden age of gaming in general.
there are more pc devs now than ever. they are indie (in other words not multimillion dollar corporation) and are making some unique and great games for PC users. Consoles have always tended to be the easiest way to reach the largest audience.
That's it, Deus Ex, you're finally getting off my backlog.

Deus Ex had quite a bit of philosophical aspects and big conspiracies etc, but once you cut out his brother it severely lacked in human relationships with technology imo. DXHR did that bit better in my opinion. And the inclusion of the Illuminati etc can easily devolve into cheesy Narm. So I think there's room for improvement, doesn't mean I didn't enjoyed the story a whole lot tho.

@Arglactable Half life 2 has issues with lagg, hit boxes etc... just see the debate between CS1.6 and CS:S to understand the issues. Portal was weird mixture of platforming, FPS and puzzle solving. Dunno, maybe my standards for puzzles is too high to not see the puzzliness that is supposedly portal. DXHR did not surprise me in any of its plot twists and the ending was terrible, to say the least. Again, it was good looking game and it had better mechanics, but it only felt like a good shooter.
@Propaani How is a game that revolves entirely around solving puzzles NOT a puzzle game? Human Revolution had an excellent story, and better game-play. And yes, System Shock 2 was better than Bioshock. As for Half-Life 2's shooting, I fail to see how not playing like a 90's PC FPS makes it less smooth, but the point of that game was the story and the cinematic presentation, which it did great.

Eh... portal isnt really an puzzle game. HL2 wasnt as smooth shooter as HL1, DXHR lacked in story, 90s we got thiefs that more than made up the lack of splintercell, bioshock didnt live up to system shock1 or 2... Hmm... LoL, mass effect series, dark/demon souls, amnesia the darkdescent have been the most impressive games to come out in these past few years. Those are games that i can see doing well even if they had bad graphics and lacking mechanics.
@lordzilu1584 And in the current generation we've had Deus EX HR (which is mechanically better than the first in pretty much every way), Half-Life 2, which took cinematic game making to a whole new level, Portal 1&2, fantastic and creative puzzle games, the Splinter Cell series, which has continually polished and redefined stealth in games, etc. And Mass Effect 1 is pretty much shit compared to 2. All it had was a bunch of meaningless stats with no real effect on the actually game-play. RPG!!!
@lordzilu1584 That is such bullshit, it's not even funny. Those games were held back by technological limitations and game design has come along way since then. Deus Ex, for instance, couldn't pass for competent stealth or action now, simply because both of those elements of the game are pretty much shit. And, sure, there are plenty of shitty commercial games out there, but it doesn't mean gaming as a whole is worse, it just means it appeals to a wider audience now than it ever did.

@scorpionoise DX:HR is decend prequel. Much of its differences can be attributed to the differend method of augmenting. Only problem i had with HR was its futuristic feel, it was more futuristic than DX1, whitch is weird on many lvls. Still, its design was good.

Deus Ex? Amazing game. Mass Effect? Amazing game. I love them both, but I honestly prefer Mass Effect. I don't know why, but I prefer class-based gameplay than just training skills. If both were/n't class-based... Then I guess ME would still win, just because of the more modern graphics. To me, both have equally good gameplay, story, and are just equally good, but graphics do make a difference however small. If game quality were gold, both game would be Mt Everests, but ME would weigh + 1 gram
I prefer the story of mass effect, but deus ex has better music and gameplay (though if the third game has any significant engine upgrades, it might be on the same level).

I've never played Deus Ex, but I now realize it is imperative that I do! This song is one of the best pieces of music I have ever heard, and I am a fan of all the legendary game soundtracks---Secret of Mana, FFVI, Chrono Trigger, etc! Game music composers need to take a step back from the dull, fully orchestrated music they are blanketing the industry with today and return to the root of what made some of the best game music ever in the first place----digital composition.
One of the most wonderful pieces of game music ever. Even for someone who didn't go through the game it's amazing, and if someone played Deus Ex in the first place, it brings great memories as well. One of the best, period.

@Winter1012 Without a doubt Deus Ex pwns Mass Effect. I have yet to find a game that comes even close to the emotions and strong sense of reality in a story that Deus Ex brings. This isn't just a simple game its a novel read through a mouse and keyboard and they did it perfectly.

@phaedruslive Mass Effect 2 was definitely great but it felt like it lost all of the RPG elements from the first one and became a full out third person shooter. It sort of lost its X-factor that made the first game so great at the price of better gameplay. Oh well, I hope they get the combination they're looking for in the next one.

@N00bkeek You have a point, the more a games appeals to a larger amount of people, the higher the chance that the game becomes the subject of critcisim. In a way, its better for a game to be a cult game, as only those who will appreciate it get to.
@N00bkeek i saw health handled best in far cry 2: light wounds gradually healed over time, moderate wounds didn't heal without first aid, and heavy wounds needed immediate attention or you'd bleed out. medkit economies and being good as new after 10 seconds behind cover are both awful game mechanics, but the second is the lesser evil because you will never have a dead end.
@redwaller66 theyre going back to different ammo types for weapons, andplayers regen health like in modern warfare and such so that tense moments dont have to be interrupted by running around to search for hp items

Tell me about it... The only lethal weapon I use is the sniper rifle or regular darts if im out of tranq darts. I only kill if the situation calls for it like on the rooftops in Hell's Kitchen I have an easier time if I pick them off with the sniper rifle. Mechs are pretty easy to avoid they have less line of sight than humans.

Non-lethal is definitly the best way to go but keep in mind some enemies you cant get by so Non-lethaly, the M12 Cybertroops for example you're gonna want to kill before they even get NEAR you, they got like, chainguns that TEAR YOU UP, not to mention arm mounted rockets oh, and GIANT MECHS.. those you cant really get by without being a damn ninja or having rockets or those Mines

I only played Deus Ex up to Hong Kong but I'm kicking myself for not finishing it.
If you didnt play tutorial trough: JC and Paul have their facial emotions tampered. They cannot smile, for example. Makes them harder to "read" from expressions i imagine. This in mind i could bear trough horrific voice acting of "a bomb". :P You know, you can definately see how much voice acting effects players. Even a small scratch into general feel of the game sends shockwaves into your nerves. Something that people forget these days while making new games...
Either way, no one can argue that this isn't quintessential cyberpunk. It just makes the game so much more awesome :D
Recently played Deus Ex the first time, yes i never played it before, but now i know why it's considered as one of the best games ever made! Hong Kong is my favorite level so far, the music is really catchy, played it about 20 times in loopmode and it didn't get old, that's the sign for me that it's great music :)
Well, my only point was that people were giving him thumbs down for drawing parallels to the Matrix. Warren Spector has actually been quoted as saying that some of the concepts and visual designs are influenced by it, so his comment was valid. And as far as Cyberpunk goes, 90% of it is influenced by Neuromancer. ;)
I felt that Neuromancer had a larger influence on the game, especially with the augmentations. Example: in Neuromancer people put little chips in their heads to get certain effects, like telling whether or not someone is being used like a mobile camera. In Deus Ex we have the Targeting aug that gives us information of people and things. Both can be activated at will. The only difference between the two is that augmentations are internal and the chips stick out of one's neck, behind the ear.

Omg, this brings so many melancholic memories. When I first played the Hong Kong Level, for some reason I didn't like it at all! Now I just love it, it's my favourite level of the game right after the airfield. Deus Eeeeeeeeeex <3 i love you so much! :D

When I get out of that lift and enter the market that music starts up and I get a warm excited feeling about all the subversive bloodshedding ahead - HK levels are so much fun and releasing the Bum, Greasels and Greys in the labs is hilarious!

I never got to that level but I know this is used in the "Hong Kong RPG" map. Heh, I remember playing there. It was allways fun, but now you can't find it anywhere. Does anyone know where to get the map?
I keep the original game disk in my car and pop it in from time to time. It really is a fantastic soundtrack, if a little dated in the sample quality. Those digital instruments don't age so well ;D

yup - poor character graphics, dodgy voice acting in places, massive save files. Yet its still perhaps the best game ever - a testament to just how good the story is. was it just me or did anyone else also know invisible war was going to be shit just from the youngish 'trendy' guy on the cover?
is the ps2 version good? i know the controlls can't be as good as the pcs but still...

One of the best fps games ever made, not becouse the action itself, but becouse it delivered an incredibly strong story with freeform mission objectives that usualy had multiple ways to be accomplished. Too bad the sequel was such a bad cashcow, horrible game so just stay away from that one. They recently revealed plans for a third one, and I must admit that the blade runner feel from the concept art makes me somewhat optimistic :)
This game is unique. Good graphics, exciting puzzles + freedom in the way of solving them : you could just rush through a group of droids, or hack their AI so they would shoot each other. Most of all it's the dark atmosphere of a plausible near future. As an agent of the government (to simplify it) you fight "terrorist" until you discover that the world isn't as black and white as your superiors would want it to be. So you get to chose your "own" path in the middle of conspiracy. A must !

Well, if blinding cops with CS gas and beating drug dealers to death is goody goody. See, I may not start fights, but I always finish them, with vastly superior firepower and I don't kill cops, because that just brings more problems in the long run and as for protecting civilians, well, whats the use in being the badass phantom of the streets if there is no one to fear me and pass on my legend?

This brings back memories, of stalking down the streets of Hong Kong, conducting hit and run battles under the noses of the cops, keeping to my own code of honour and conduct (IE never start a fight be always finish it, never kill cops if I can avoid it, protect civilians if I can)

Probably the best game of all time. This track got so stuck in my head after playing the first Hong Kong segment. Fit the gameplay and atmosphere of that area perfectly.

nah the ps2 version sucks..the scenes with jock flying you out sucks, and the health system does not corespond to your body like if you get shot in the arm you lose points in your arm, etc etc.. i have the ps2 version
There was a Playstation 2 remake that sounds almost exactly like what you're saying.
A grave mistake they would do well not to repeat.
The PS2 version was made years after the PC version, I think. It was just a port. Deus Ex 2 was made for both PCs and consoles at the same time. I guess they just wanted to make the game more console friendly since consoles are more popular.

I agree with mushroomjay that consoles screw everything up, but I must point out that the original Deus Ex was made for the ps2 aswell as the PC. The difference there was that the ps2 version wasnt forced over to the pc version like they did for DX2.
might install deus ex since my X1900xtx died on me, and that was my only PCIe card I own... Time to install some mad Voodoo 3500 ;/
