I always get amused by how this huge, climatic sounding music plays for a tutorial fight against a bunch of easily dispatched nobodies. You'd think this was the last fight in the game or some shit. But in all seriousness, this game was an instant classic. You knew when you heard this playing for the first fight in the game you were in for something special.
You also hear this music during the last battle of Chapter 1 with Algus, the Underground Book Storage 5th Floor (Orbonne Monastery) battle and a few others between.

Grand, never a sequel, top of the art game. Since Squaresoft doesn't exist anymore I really wonder if SquareEnix has the talent and means to ever produce a jewel like this again. Their titles look good but lack everything else.

I've beaten this game so many times I've lost count. Would give anything for a sequel, not like Tactics Advance, but an actual continuation of the story with Ramza. Or maybe a prequel with Ramza's dad, Balbanes, back in his younger days. Or maybe a spin-off with Delita as the main character playing through his side of the story. That would be badass.

Well, for what it's worth, Tactics did get a raid storyline in Final Fantasy XIV.
Yeah, what powerful goku said. FFT is essentially the chaos path in Tactics Ogre, which has alignment-based story paths based on your choices, and it was made by the same dev team before coming to Square 😁

I've only watched my cousins play the first mission of this game, and the music stuck in my head, every time I emulated a Tactics Ogre game, this song played in my head. Any time I imagined a Tactics Ogre scenario or any game based thereof, *this song played in my head.* Thanks to games like this and Far Cry 4, I think it might be rule of thumb that the mission of defending a monastery might have some kickass OST. (Look up "Cultural Exchange Far Cry 4", and find a silent walkthrough. You'll see what I mean)
This was probably the darkest most serious final fantasy of all. Even though it wasn't given a number because it was an offshoot, man. This was brutal. Just looking at the pictures of Ramza and Delita, both their lives were destroyed completely.
There was no happy ending to this game. It was just awful (but a great story!)

Having finished this for a 2nd time yesterday, I think I like XIV more with this being a close 2nd. Chapter 4, from a gameplay standpoint, is terrible. Orlandu is way too overpowered and with every fight being "DEFEAT THIS PERSON" the game just becomes way too easy. XIV, to me, is the ultimate FF especially for anyone who favors the High Fantasy/Job System entries

I'll never go as far as to say it's better than VII, but FFT is still seriously underrated despite its numerous re-releases and ports. There's never been another game quite like it.
I love how well they blended together the music of XII and Tactics given they take place in the same world. Does anyone know if the same composer of tactics also compose the music of XII?
The composers for both game are indeed the same person. Hitoshi Sakimoto (I know that he did Tactics but I don't think that he was alone on XII). I love his sound as well. :3 I have not heard all of his music but I want to share 2 pieces of his music that I really love. Check out Attic of the Great Cathedral from Vagrant Story and "A Fate Accepted" from Odin Sphere (again I don't think it's him alone but he had his hand in it). I hope you enjoy and keep on listening.
if you liked the OSTs for tactics and XII, then you should also check out the ones for tactics advance and tactics advance 2. also many reused tracks and an overall very similiar style since its also done by hitoshi sakimoto. also i can recommend the valkyria chronicles soundtrack (not a final fantasy game but OST is also by hitoshi sakimoto and reminds me alot of the tactics games !)

If anyone wants a true challenge, go find the Final Fantasy Tactics 1.3 mod. Rebalanced things, altered some skills especially Black Magic, and made the AI god mode. You must truly outplay them and have strategy to win. Have to pay attention to CT and speeds of characters to prevent enemies revive chaining, weighing your odds of success Curse Striking enemies for Oil+Poison with archers so you can use explosion/comet to delete them, etc. Anyone who truly gets into the FFT gameplay should love this mod. It really stretches your skills and planning to win fights.

I want a new FF Tactics soooo bad. It would be amazing to see a return to the darker, more mature themed style. I'm okay with the light heartedness of the later tactics games but off setting it with more of a grim story would be a nice balance if they still want to cater to a young audience alongside us.. aged players. This game took me a year to finish. But I was dedicated enough to find all the hidden areas and characters. Including the grueling invisible/dark dungeon.

I loved this game. Some parts were fucking hard as hell but that's what makes a good solid tactic game. Plus the story was really good if you like politics and what-not.

I was into all the other final fantasy's when they came out but when this one did I was a little turned off. However now I played it recently and it was fucking good. Good storyline. Good orchestral music as well.
Once you have TG Cid, it's game over. But it's fun to get Cloud in there as well.

I've played tons of SRPGs, but out of all them I'd say the original Final Fantasy Tactics was, and still is, the most hardest. And I enjoy it because of that. FFTA is pretty much the only game in the bunch of strategic role-playing games that truly lives up to its genre.

@manashima I had the same problem! trying to beat the first level with only Ramza and Delita...possible, but ridiculously tough. Once I figured out how to form a party, it was probably the most enjoyable game I've ever played. Well, whenever I wasn't spending an hour getting through the text that appeared at 2 letters a second :P
This is the ONLY game I've played through over 10 times and counting. They need to make a real sequel , not some shitty wannabe on the DS.
This game, even today, is the definition of Cutting the Edge. Phenominal Music, even by today's standards. Plotline is fantastic, and even disturbing. Banned in some places for it's religious overtones, and various "realities". Gameplay was entertaining, and you get to use control the most over powered character ever designed. T.G.Cid makes the game to easy. :p The characters are fantastic, the story is equally so. The music is a bonus, and could have made the game on it's own.

@maximus451 You can actually just DL the original off of PSN for $5, that's what I did when my copy of WOL got stolen while I was on a flight. On that note, don't fall asleep on a plane to Detroit with things You'd rather not have stolen. I've had my PSP, stuff from my pockets, and 3 games nabbed from me that way before.

hahaha, I actually spent alot of frustration and time trying to figure out if there was a "secret" way of getting Ramza to become a Holy Knight. I remember seeing Delita become a Holy Knight, and was like WTF!!! Little did I know that it was all due to plot. It sorta did give me a greater appreciation for the game though, because for once in an RPG the main character does not get any special abilities. (aside from Guts, but Guts is sorta meagre compared to the Holy Knight)
thats one thing that pissed me off about the psp version. The ps version didn't have ANY slowdown at all. I also don't like the sound of the psp version. It also ticks me off that all the little glitches and bugs were removed like the job point glitch and the item duplication glitch.
@FanofniceGameMusic Agreed wholeheartedly. This game shaped me as a person. I literally grew up with this game, and I don't think I'll ever outlive the impact it has had on me. My appreciation for storytelling, for music, for games and gameplay, for even moral or general values, were all shaped by this game. Hearing this reminds me of the first time I loaded it up and played it. "Don't blame us. Blame yourself, or God."

IMHO the PSP version is Vastly Superior right down to the Translation and gameplay. The only flaw it has is some minor slowdown that is easy to get used to.

Some people complained about the sound quality of the music. And it's simple really, The original was Sequenced sound played through the Playstation using Effects like Reverb. The sound is essentially the same minus the Reverb. This is what the sound samples sounded like RAW. And they did this for an obvious reason. With all the reverb listening through just the psp speaker you wouldn't be able to hear all the instruments clearly. They didn't do it with Full Stereo in mind
the gameplay was fantastic. But the story was different and good for what it was. FFT was essentially a Tactics Ogre ripoff. Down to many things. But i still love it.

Yeah, the death cries were lame, it felt like Final Fantasy Tactics: Advance >_> In the original, the first time you hear the death cry a chill goes down your spine, it's awesome.
The dialogue, I didn't see any gameplay problems but I didn't even bother when they started saying thou. Feel free to disagree, but it means a lot to me.

Alot of atrocities have been committed in the name of God. I personally think the Catholoc Church deserves the 'bashing' it suffered from this game and then some. Then again, this game IS just called Final FANTASY Tactics.
Easy. WoTL was great, but they kidded down the dialogue. The PS version did a lottt of hardcore church bashing. Enough for enough people to have gotten mad at Square to make them change most of the dialogue. And the PSP version I feel is easier.
Want to elaborate? Unless extra jobs, side quests, unlockable characters and a hell of a lot better translation seems to 'mess up' games for you, I don't see how the WoTL ruined FFT.

Sequel, spin off, whatever. Tactics Advance was a dumbed down version of Tactics. The Charge Timer was gone and that was a big mistake. Judges? Seriously? They made them better in TA2 but they were still stupid.

Yeah, this music made slaughtering him really epic! I had Delita deliver the last blow on him and I laughed hysterically when Algus passed out. It still was quite a shock to see him betray Ramza and killing Teta. But that's what made the plot so great. Twists. Gosh, it must be about 10 years since I first played this. I'm one of the few in Finland that have played the original Tactics. My Playstation was modded to support American releases and FFT became one of my treasures. I'm so lucky! :)
