To imagine I was 2 years old when this was released damn...
Listening to this song brings back memories all those years ago. I was super young and so 150cc Special Cup was an actual challenge, I was trying for ages and finally got an attempt where I needed to win on Rainbow Road to complete the game. As usual I got spammed by items and cheap NPC and had to catch up on the final lap. The music gets intense and I psyched myself up. I got back to back stars and zoomed up to 3rd going up that final large spiral and my final item pickup on the ramp was a triple green shell, better then nothing I held onto it until I could see the other two drivers DK and Wario and only metres from the line i fire tilt fire and nail both of them who start tumbling and stall literally on the line while I zoom past them and won!!! Its still to this day one of my best gaming moments ever.
I wasn't born until after the GameCube came out, but this was still my first video game. Sitting in my dad's office at home cross=-legged in front of the big CRT for hours on end is my earliest memory. Unfortunately, my dad lost his N64 not too long after that. When I was in 5th grade, I found out that my school had a gaming club, though, and had this game there. Once again, some of my fondest memories are of playing battle mode or Rainbow Road with friends for ages. Thanks for the great times, Nintendo. I love this game so much.

loved how obscenely long this race track was. my older brother thought it was lame because the track had railings, where in super mario kart (and later iterations), you could fall off.

I remember kart hopping at the starting line, and then flying for like fifteen seconds through the air. Sometimes I'd fly off into space for the luls. I remember all the short cuts you could exploit by hopping through space.

It's a memory that is so positive to me that is use it as motivation to keep pushing forward. If still own my n64, but when it find this game. There will be a regular dose of this everyday.

Nintendo has always been for the so-called "casual gamer" (what a snobby phrase), super mario bros for instance was much more generous to the player than any other platformer around then, the fact that it always felt fair no doubt was part of the cause behind its' popularity. Mario Kart 64 was always the kind of game where you drink a couple of beers with your mates while playing multiplayer.

@James Fortas Not in Europe where almost everyone was playing on their C64 or Amiga. In the 90's they moved on to PC (or DOS as it was called back then) to play Wolfenstein 3D. NES brought some gamers in but almost 9 million user base in EU is pretty shy when North America stands for over 30 million. People rather played football games on Amiga than playing on NES in the 80's and those games who topped the chartlist were mostly C64 and Amiga games. It wasn't until SEGA came out with Mega Drive and when NES started to get some gems from third party developers the video game era started to bloom in EU. After SNES came out it got the same install base as NES had and Mega Drive expanded the demography for gamers in UK. However, you said SONY didn't revived the industry but they revolutionized the industry and expand the interest for video games. More girl gamers started to flock to PlayStation. It was about the simplistic concept and let everyone to play that sold the system. We will probably never see a variety of genres again like we saw on PS1. There were 2D games and 3D games on retailer disc. PS1 was the first CD based console to succed on the market after failures like SEGA CD, 3DO and PC Engine. Going from 68 million worldwide to 102 million worldwide is to expand the demography, right? PS1 was also the first video games console to revive the industry in EU. They brought many PC gamers into that console who saw the games and bought the system especially adults in the early of it's lifespan like '95 and '96 when we teenagers and kids got it for Xmas in '97 when PS1 really took off. PS1 managed to sell 42 million in EU in it's lifetime and that broke the sales record. The first console in history to hit 5 million mark in UK. PS2 would have sold 102 million units if it wasn't for Phil Harrison's casual route with London Studio who expand the user base to 155 million and brought casual gamers in which Nintendo grabbed with the Wii. To say Sony didn't do anything is a lie.
Nintendo ended up with the Wii because no-fu*****-body bought the Gamecube A,K,A one of the most powerful console of the 6th gen and the cheapest. It'a all the "gamers" fault... If people would have bought the damn thing, maybe Nintendo would have pursued the "powerful" console race... Instead, it ended up being the worst sold console of Nintendo after the virtual boy. They obviously had to change strategy. A company don't stay with the same thing if it sold poorly... Look at Sony, all Playstation consoles are copy/paste of the previous one because they all did well...

To think COD will someday be childhood memories to some people... I think it's a little sad. I'm not even saying the games suck (even though they kinda do IMO), they're just... nowhere near as enchanting, they have nothing magical about them, nothing to make your imagination go wild, nothing to dream about... :(
Its honestly sad that games that immerse the mind to a vast world of experience and imagination are viewed as childish games. In the future, I'd love to hear a child say a game like Super Mario Odyssey was their first game that made video games feel magical. Nowadays kids like to play things that are more realistic in order to seem like they're cool and know what's going on in the world. Its honestly sad that these types of magical games are only living today for people who've loved the games from their early beginnings.

Seeing the SNES course in the latest Mario Kart was great Nintendo, but the game would have sold a lot more if you gave us the universally love N64 track with its neon racers in the sky, the deadly Chain Chomps on the road, and every last unfair and illegitimate shortcut.
today i invited 2 friends to my house we played RE5 on the 360 for 30 minutes and got bored, then i connected de N64 we played 3 hours of Mario kart and SSB

I'd say get Banjo Tooie, I've seen lots of MarioKart 64 around, but Banjo Tooie seems to be more difficult to come by, so get that and then feet MarioKart since I guarantee it'll be easy to find.
I honestly cried when I played the new MarioKart game. They have Rainbow Road as a throwback level, and it didn't have this music. I burst into tears, confused the heck out of the kid I was babysitting...

Anytime the picture to the current racer I had came around, I would say to my brother/friends that, that was his/her father/mother. Loved this game so much.

However, you can't argue whether or not something is someone else's favorite. Sure, it was the best Mario Kart at the time, but that has nothing to do with now. I'm saying that it is no longer the best. This whole conversations started because people were saying it is better than MKWii which seems pretty outrageous to me. Also, I enjoyed Diddy Kong Racing more.

Besides, what about people who started with the MK on Super Nintendo? Are you going to tell me they think that one is best?

God the N64 was so much fun.. Me, my cousin and my neighbour trying to find a way to beat Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time, and when we got tired if trying to fix those damn puzzles we just went and played some Mario Kart 64 to cool off. Games these days are all about the money, not about the games. Just compare 90's and early 2000's games and games nowadays, and you will see the difference.

@TheDisarminghinkle This game get's lots of love for many reasons. Most of us played it as kids and have fond memories of it. The music is iconic now. The tracks were interesting and intuative. The items weren't as OP. And it had the best battle track ever. I still play it today with my bros for above reasons (the controls aren't that bad imo). The wii version was fine but lacking. Tracks were fine, but the karts feel VERY unresponsive when not sliding. OP dumb items. It became MK biker rally.

I love all Mario Kart Games, even the ones I haven't played. There's just no way I can choose a single, separate favorite. This is one of them, though.
The ridiculous amount of love for this game is a little bit annoying to me. People continue to praise it as the best in the series. It is nowhere near close. I have respect for it, but calling it the best is just beyond exaggeration. The controls are simply awful. Even as N64 racers go, this wasn't the best. Diddy Kong Racing was way better. This game may have gotten the Mario Kart franchise off the ground, but anyone who says that its the best needs to 1. Play it again now, 2. Kart Wii

I don't know why... but this version of Rainbow Road seems to have more emotion than the other more recent ones. Whenever I first heard this when I was 5, I pictured all of the racers' goals and ambitions as I passed over the colorful Skittles rainbow, seeing each of their faces in the background. @Mariomaster091 Dont worry. Sooner or later the hype will cool down and people will realize that FPS are not the very quintessence of video gaming. And once that day arrives there is a high possibility we may get to see some fancy new games again. FPS cant be "cool" forever. And then the FPS-generation will experience the same "pain" we had to go through and once that happens I will be there, dissing there beloved Call of duties like they did with games we loved. Looking forward to it ^^

My 9 year old has always been a fan of Mario games. He came into this world watching his cousins playing this game and just longing for the day when he could play. Before he was even one year old, he was trying to race this game but his infant hand were not coordinated enough yet. All I could hear was sounds of frustration as he tried to play, drive straight and turn corners. One day I head him grunt and laugh out loud. He had finally figured it out and he hasn't lost a race since. He's Mario.

The first Mario Kart track I ever played. I grew up in the age where Gamecube was out. (i'm 15 now) My friend had a hand-me-down 64, and we played it. I swear we played this track a million times. This game NEVER gets old, no matter how fustrating 150cc Star and Special Cups are. If anyone says it's bad, I respect you opinion, but damn it, I disagree.

You see, it's games like these that disprove of the modern "graphics over gameplay" slogan that many video game companies are adopting. Can't they just see that it's the core gameplay, the memories created, the sheer joy of playing these kind of games overrules the whole "OMG SHOOTER FPS FPS FPS" genre? Don't get me wrong, I like FPS'S. TF2's a good favourite of mine - but it'd be amazing if games like this had just as much limelight as FPS' on today's markets... Long live the 90's!

I was born in the 90s and raised like I was in the 80s. I grew up with my dad's NES and SNES, and got an N64 for my birthday even when the Game Cube was coming out in only a week. I'm glad I got to experience this kind of video game music for a very good amount of time before it got into the generic orchestral crap.

Something that Nintendo has unlike Sony and Microsoft, their games will stand the test of time... I dunno... I can't explain it... their gameplay is always amazing, the music is fantastic. Even though Nintendo was sadly in hot water with N64 and NGC, The Wii has a very good fututre. Nintendo will been releasing some really cool stuff, like Donkey Kong Country Returns, Remake of Goldeneye 007, Kirby's epic yarn... It just sick.
Man, so much nostalgia, played this with my sis and my dad when I was like 9 or 10... 16 now and I FUCKING MISS THOSE DAYS! Back when multiplayer gaming was WAY, WAY better, because without online ruining everyones fun with lag and server bullshit, you could all gather in one room and just ENJOY playing the game together. Multiplayer gaming now days just isnt the same.... nowhere near as good.

Ah, this song. It's always a joy to hear it. It reminds me of the days when the only people you played Mario Kart with included you, your siblings, and the next door neighbors. The days when no, you had no clue what drifting was, and no you didn't know there was an easier way of turning sharp corners instead of letting go of accelerate when you got to them. The days when Rainbow Road included random faces made of stars coming at you. Those were the days.

Falling off the side of the slide at the start of the course instead.... The tears, the crying, the joy and the rush of kicking your friends butts... I miss this game. I loved/hated it so much.

Great music but the game was not as good as the original, it felt so cheap because you could get good but the game would have characters catch up no matter how well you did or what you did to them. In any racing game, you should be able to gather a lead. Mario Kart DS finally captured the feel and difficulty of the first game. Great song though!

I was still young when I had my N64. My family wasn't the gaming type, so I played by myself. Hey You, Pikachu!, Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64, and Star Wars: Episode I Racer were examples of the games I owned. I was perfectly happy with my N64. Unfortunately, I gave away my N64 to my uncle who is the same age as me. Now, my dad found another N64, and I'm able to enjoy MK64, Kirby 64, and Pokemon Puzzle League just like 10 years ago... This song brings back those memories...

Yeah, Mario Kart 64 brings a lot of good memories to me. It was my 2nd N64 game after Mario 64. I remember buying it in July 1997 when I was 9 years old. And I remember that it took a lot of time since I did my first race, because the menu language was english and I didn't understand anything.... XD GOOD, OLD TIMES ;)
Well, my mother wasn't always the expert, (I found or reached most of the secrets) But that was half the joy of it all. What she couldn't do (like the lava baloons and rollercoster stages.) I usualy could. But we always had troble on that burning rope stage... Man, that music just keaped going on and on, and the ropes... THE ROPES... God, how painfully joyus. What more can I say?
Yeah, I must admit, SNES took over our family for some time. Mum was playing DKC (Which one? all of 'em.) and mario, with me watching (and getting past tricky bits.) And Dad sometimes sat down and played Desert, Jungle, Or Urban strike. The room's praticaly the same as it always was, and I can feel, hear, and even taste and smell the old times rushing back on a cold winter afternoon. Ah, what joy...

Yeah, well... It was never really mine to begin with (I remeber my sister geting the PS1 when I was about five, so the N64 was deffinatly for her!) And I've only got a grand total of around 9 games, Even including the ones I brought at a charity shop, But it's still going strong whenever I play it.

My whole family and I used to play and we still do. My bro and I used to play V.S. mode and we used to leap off the sides of Rainbow Road to try and see who could make it first! :) That was fun, we used to beat each other up with out getting pissed at one another, it was so funny. I miss those times now. Count your blessings...And cherish every memory that is awesome. It really cheers you up when you think back to those kinds of special things! :)

Oh yeah and Killer Instinct 64. Just not as much. Now I own all those on VC, well not KI 64 since it's not on there. The slow tempo of this song goes so well with the sequence of rainbow passing under your kart...it really showed what racing on a rainbow road would be like. The music complimented the stage so well. God I love nintendo 64 games.

you can actually take a HUGE shortcut if you jump off the road at a certain point on that hill. I think it's around the third yellow stripe. You jump off and can cut off like a third of the track.
God help you if you accidentally hop and hit the control stick simultaneously on that first long descent. Your ass would go flying off the road.

Eh, while it had amazing design, I could do without the crapshoot "leap off the side at the starting dip and cut off half a lap" in play with my friends.
The 64 rainbow road music owns all of its counterparts by far, and the wii rainbow road was obviously the hardest.But in all seriousnes... the concept of the stage was probably a gay perons idea :P

No racing game could EVER match the atmosphere of N64 Rainbow road, The Neon Characters, The music, how long the track was, chain chomps. MK64 FTFW.
I could never do that shortcut. I'd over shoot the landing, or miss it trying not to over shoot it. Massive nostalgia. =)

Yeah, I agree. As an adult you're constantly plagued with bills, behaving "properly", having a job and other adult issues. I, too, remember the time when homework was the greatest worry, and video games and friends was the greatest joy. Even the relationship thing with girls felt more innocent, playful and interesting. I wish I was a kid again, seriously.

Yeah! I have this game, too. It still rocks! Although, it would be cool if the AI actually used shells...(I only have 2 controllers and I usually play solo.) Still, it's a pretty awesome game.

I still have the game ever since I wuz 8 and I still play it now and then. My big cousin kicks ass in that game! Makes me feel like a noob now. lol This game is still the best no matter wut others say about this game.

This version is awesome and so it Double Dashes, but if I were to choose, I would rather race to this one. Maybe cause I grew up on this one? I dunno, but I friggin love this song, and alot of ninendo's music!!

This was always such a fantastic song. It gave the actual race track such an otherworldly and almost paradise feel.

Most awesome endrace music ever though! When i heard it as a kid it made me wanting to go advance to rainbow road so I could hear the music... and I love videogame music alot

Hmm well it depends what you mean by "big". :P In the end it can't be more than juste another music. I will carefully choose it though, #100 is pretty important! I might also do other music collections inside a single video, like the ones for Mario RPG or Earthbound. We'll see!
