To this day, I don't think I have played a game with as much emotional punch as Shadow Hearts: Covenant.
it literally changed my life. It wasnt just a good game, it was brilliant with metaphor. I don't think any other game or story made me cry like such a little bitch as this game did.
The scene between Yuri and Alice - you know the one - is probably one of the realest I've seen in RPGs, or gaming period. The feelings still come back if I think about it.

It's sad that I had never got to play this one and the first one. Could never find a store selling it. I only managed to play Shadow Hearts III, and although I laughed my ass of at the jokes, I always wanted to play this one because it seemed to have a more serious story.

@Filip Jovanovic so glad someone agrees. Can't praise this game enough. First one to really break the 4th wall for me with all the history stuff included in it, that they certainly didn't have to do. I feel something empty when I finish another story now, when you enter the town in japan and that music hits... ahhhh it just felt so real. More real than real. Not even getting into combat, the transformations kinda like breath of fire III dragon transforms, ect ect.

God dammit these games are so good. Such a shame they aren't as popular as they should be. Would put Shadow hearts 1&2's story on par with any FF game, and FFX to this day is my favorite gaming story of all time.

yeah I loved Shadow Hearts: From the New World.. I havent played other games of the series though I probably should. I liked that game all about from its battle system to its silly humour. (the old guy cosplaying a ninja comes to mind lol)

@Grave12790 I completely stumbled onto Shadow Hearts II in the PS2 days. It made me go back and play SH1, then another play of SH2. I'm 32. Been gaming since I was 4, owned every major system, and this is still in my top 10 games of all time.
Its a shame we'll never get any new entries.

I just got to this point in the game, and this song was great to hear. Leading up to this point in the game I was a bit sad that the musical style from the first game wasn't too noticeable in the sequel, and then this song comes around and brings back that Shadow Hearts style. Sweet!
Lyrics are from the song "Seroja" (i.e 'Lotus' in Malay). Talks about the ephemeral nature of beauty and passions, which surrender to age. Nice to see Malay in a JRPG.

I haven't played any of the Shadow Hearts games. So I can't comment on their quality. This music track is alright, seems odd for a battle theme though. Maybe it makes more sense in the game's context. I wouldn't know.
It only plays once during an important boss near the mid point of the game (sort of an end of disk boss, if the game had multiple disks). Definitely recommend giving this game at least a rent. The Shadow Hearts series is epic
Your fighting a Demon lord of Hell, one that can drive men insane by his mere presence and normally doesn't get his hands dirty. I also agree with Crimsonsil, just dont bother with the third game "A new World" its very meh compared to the first 2.

Everything is OK. To each hes own. IMO FF7, FFX and FF9 are the best. FF12 is also awesome but IMO it lacks story.

You're right it does, the reason behind this might be due to the similar singing traditions of spiritual groups in Asia that has been seeping into one another for thousands of years. The song seems to have more roots in Hindu music with a bit of Pacific-Asian influence to me though. To be more particular, the song is somewhat based on a folk song from south east asia - an area that boasts a significant Muslim population. The word "Seroja" is a translation of lotus from Malaysian. In any case, Muslim is not a race :P.
Thinking this sounds like a "Muslim chant" isn't racist, it's an innocuous opinion. Preceding any sentence with "I'm not being racist but..." will definitely make you seem racist though.

The lyrics in this song are from a famous Malay folk song called Seroja. -If I recall correctly, Spyro 2's Colossus theme is just random chanting and not actually a language.- *EDIT:* Omg I just re-listened the Spyro song, and op is right. The lyrics are literally the exact same snippet of Seroja that this song uses. My mind is blown.
@Sam Hartman It's not the same clip, though, right? Says something interesting about human language that me and Will Nye recognized the song, despite being sung fairly differently in the two songs, and not knowing the language (I'm assuming Will Nye does not understand Malay. I apologize if I'm mistaken).
@PsychadelicoDuck You're correct, it's not. The vocalists themselves sound very different, and the melodies are slightly different, too. I couldn't tell you if he speaks Malay or not, but I sure don't, so it really is amazing.

Personally, Covenant was my favorite in the series. A lot of people seem to like the first one the most, and while it's really really great, Covenant stuck with me more. 3 was easily the weakest in the series, but not bad.

This game was insanely amazing :) Or well still is. Loved the battlesystem in it. If you want to play RPG's, sticking to Nintendo exclusively isn't a good idea. Sony tends to pick up the biggest amount of good RPGs ^^

For those who wonder what the lyrics are; it is: "Mari menyusun.... mari menyusun.... mari menyusun seroja.. bunga seroja" It is in malay/indonesian (you can search Mari Menyusun Bunga Seroja to hear the original song.) Seroja means lotus and bunga means flower. Mari means let's. Menyusun means arrange. So the literal meaning is: "Let us arrange lotus flower." It is fitting indeed, as Astaroth (second battle) is sitting in lotus stance.

One of the best tunes in this game and in RPG music altogether. A shame the Shadow Hearts series has been put to bed. I doubt we'll be seeing any further entries, but it was fun while it lasted. A shame the Director's Cut of Covenant never came overseas though. What is up with that?
One of the the most prominent characteristics of this video game's soundtrack was the ability to portray a kickass sound that got you into it, while at the same time conveying how sad the situations that triggered the battles really were. Behind it all, Covenant had quite a sad tone, still that didn't mean it had to be a dull experience. The Shadow Hearts series was part of the last bastion of games from the Golden Age of Rpgs that was the SNES/PS1/PS2 era.

I hated Shadow Hearts, but stuck it out. Everybody said Covenant was the greatest thing since sliced bread. I made it haflway through and realized I hated it so much that not only did I get rid of the game, I deleted my save file. I guess I missed out on what everybody things is so great about this game. :\

@rafaelzimrp Not that surprised, i found most bosses terribly easy in this one. The only thing i found annoying was probably status ailments that i was not expecting (petrify, instant death and the like) and it only mattered if i ran out of soul benedicts and talismans which was never XD.

@popimpi No you fight his dad just to obtain the SeraphicRadiance fusion monster. To get the happy ending you need to fight the masks in order from Grail, Gold, Staff, and Sword(Oath Grail makes it much easier), and read the small gravestone before Alice goes to the Graveyard. If it says "Rest in Peace Alice Elliot" you'll get Yuri in the Atman battle allowing you to beat him and get teh happy ending.
@DartUchiha In no.1 I remember him being your dad as the final boss of the graveyard to get the "alice saved" ending.

@Idolores I just played today and I found out that I had the Oath Grail and didn't know it. So I kicked the masks asses and I whooped Atman. I'm so happy now.
@Idolores Both endings in Shadow Hearts 1 are canonical. The time loop would keep going SH1 bad end to SH2 good end until the SH1 good ending takes place.

@robbyalp You should pick the 3rd one up as long as you're not expecting it to be as good as the others. Pick it up as if it were separate from the series. It's an amazing game that gets a lot of crap just because it wasn't as good as the others but it's still a fun and amazing game that everyone should play whether you're a fan of the series or not. Just don't get your hopes up too high and you'll enjoy it more than most rpgs.
Oddly enough, this sounds like a early level in Spyro 2. The buddisht temple one. Still...different and great.
I strongly suggest you pick up the first and trudge through it even though it may seem very outdated - The second in the series is a direct follow up of the crazy, tragic events from the first, and an even finer game. As for the third, well... Don't worry about that one.

I like the Covenant music, graphics, character, gampeplay, story and atmosphere better. And for myself I had a lot more laughs playing Covenant than The New World. The ending of the Covenant is very touching. The game itself has a much deeper and darkr atmosphere. And From the New World resembles the Covenant so much. Diffrent scenery but the same concepts.
I love SH 2 but haven't yet play the previous title... btw whats the diffs between SH 2 n Covenant?

It's the most American-friendly RPG, actually gets advertising, is always pretty when released, and requires little brainpower to enjoy. Also some people(Mainly the producers) are a little tense about the religious themes used in Shadow hearts and many other RPG series, which basically just leaves Final Fantasy, and "maybe" Dragons Quest as comfortably marketable games, and dragon quest is less serious than FF, which makes it appeal less to people. Sucks, but what can you do other than buy more.
Nah, all have their own little twists and boops(Except 10-2, which was something enjoyable gameplay, but half decent story.) And yeah, I'm at the last boss in the game, but I haven't ended it yet.. Grr...
almost any rpg is better then FF at this point. The first 10 main series were good and the original tactics, but beyond that it's pretty depressing. I havn't beaten shadow hearts II yet. the music makes me want to play it though

I personally liked From the New World. I guess a lot of people were dissapointed because they expected another game with the dark atmosphere of the previous Shadow Hearts. But FtNW was charming and a nice change of pace.

It wasn't as dark as the first two,kinda disappointing story and the places you travel could be more fascinating.Wish in SH3 you could travel in Europe too except for America. But I gotta admit that the gameplay was perfect and very improved. Main character could've been better,but there can be no other Yuri.

What a great track -- I especially like the synthesized keyboard parts; they are just great... 3:55 to 4:05 is just a great ending section -- it makes it seem all really epic...

It's basically a synthesized fretless electric bass sound. The fretless electric bass was popularized by Jaco Pastorius, one of the all-time great bass players.
My favorite part of this song would have to be from 0:57-1:17 & 3:00-3:20.

THis is a very good tune. I'm not in the astaroth fight yet. But this tune doesn't sound like it'd belong in a boss fight. Its sort of cotemplative.

God. When I fought Astaroth and heard this song I was like "whoa, wtf?! a bad ass song?!" Then I killed Astaroth and I was like "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO I WANT MORE SONG!!! YOU FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT GAME, GIMME BACK MY SONG" Meh. I was relieved when I got it from shadowhaxor. :)

Well, it's very difficult to translate, but it's a type of flower named Seroja, it's a kind of a pastime activity for the women of Javanese background. A sort of flower arranging activity. But the original song is a bout a female virgins going through her adulthood.

If you guys liten to it carefully, it is a Malay/Javanese song titled Seroja. It's a song meant for young virgins towards her adulthood. I'm quite surprised to hear this song on a Japanese game! The lyrics: "Mari menyusun Seroja bunga Seroja" Thesong itself are 3:35 mins but this song however, just use the lyrics there.
I fell in love with this song, the minute I heard it. Dark, worldly and mysterious. It just screams Shadow Hearts (and Yasunori Mitsuda) to me. :D
