I wish I hadn't played the game to experience this song w/o memories. The bit right after 1:21 is great, but most of this song is quite slow...a trait I rarely like in vg songs.

Been playing Metroid Prime 2 over the past week and I've been listening to this song rather often.
"I think the Ceres Space Incident is a more justifiable cause for Samus's PTSD than Ridley killing her parents." Samus did not get PTSD from Ridley killing her parents, rather Ridley was going to kill HER until her dad set off a trap for the space pirates. And while I understand it's just a personal reason, it does not help that I replayed Super Metroid a few weeks before my first playthrough of Other M and I was on my last energy tank when I defeated Ridley. So I suppose it made perfect sense for my Samus to freeze in fear at sight of someone who almost killed her last time they met.
To be fair, Samus is pretty much kicking herself for her past failures the whole game...either way, I think the Ceres Space Incident is a more justifiable cause for Samus's PTSD than Ridley killing her parents. Although both combined... Also, Samus's actions right before and right after fighting Meta Ridley in Metroid Prime seem similar to her actions right before/after fighting Ridley in Other M anyway (minus all the screaming).
I think you're overstating the impact of the battle at the beginning of Super Metroid. It's not like Ridley soundly defeated Samus; he just bolted with the hatchling after a brief skirmish. If he had beaten her to within an inch of her life, sure it might be a bit tramatic, but when it's simply him taking off...can't see it.
The end result is that Ridley is the only character in series canon (since the Metroid Prime games are sadly only ambiguously canon) to best Samus in battle. Maybe Mother Brain counts there too, but Samus would likely have the same reaction if she saw Mother Brain recreated. In Super Metroid, Ridley surprise-attacks Samus when she thinks he's dead. The same thing happens in Other M, and as Ridley won the previous such encounter...yeah.
Problem is, if you add in just the context of Super Metroid, it suddenly makes a lot more sense. Lost in all the mess of Samus having defeated Ridley six times prior to Other M, one must also not forget that she's lost to him once - and that time was at the beginning of Super Metroid (why this wasn't shown in Other M is beyond me. It's not like that scene hadn't been recreated in 3D before, as a little game named Super Smash Bros. Melee can attest to).
You're pretty much dead-on with that last point. Samus's PTSD makes is almost completely random in the context of Other M itself since seeing someone who has been acting like a total badass during all of the gameplay and a good chunk of the story scream at the top of their lungs is extremely jarring, and the game itself gives very little reason to justify it.
I would like elaboration, not because I necessarily disagree, just that I'm curious to hear your take (I don't have a wii but I've seen the cutscenes on youtube). It looked like the basic premises of the story had potential, but was squandered due to poor dialogue, characterization, etc.
Now this music makes me think of Metal Gear Solid.
Also I honestly felt that nothing in Other M's storyline is a bad idea at all. However, the game's script is terrible, the plot has very little focus, and my favorite Nintendo character is rendered unrecognizable and unlikable. I actually really like the idea of Samus entering PTSD at sight of a resurrected Ridley and completely disagree that it's inconsistent with the series. However, I don't like the way Other M handled this idea at all. If you would like elaboration, feel free to ask.
I would like to see an Other M-style Metroid game made by Platinum Games (developers of MadWorld, Bayonetta, Vanquish, and the upcoming Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance), with a lot less emphasis on story, much better level design, more gameplay variety (e.g. vehicle and turret sections perhaps), and new power-ups. Other M's level design and story felt more Halo than Metroid to me even though I've never played Halo. Master Chief would probably fit right into Other M.
I actually really liked Other M, but yeah it's nowhere near as good as Super Metroid, Prime, and Echoes. I didn't have much problem with Other M's controls at all, although I generally seem to have no problem with controls in games infamous for control issues (e.g. didn't have a problem with the horse controls in Shadow of the Colossus or with Metroid Prime's control scheme).
If I'm not mistaken, this music also appears in Metroid Prime 2.
Other M is decent but it was badly put together. I would like to see a metriod game to it's similar style, just fix all the bad shit about it (a better story, Samus' change in personality, Analog controls, a better dodging system, melee attacks, etc).
The game itself. i didn't agree with a lot of the development choices, but still managed to play through it.

@BrokenPipe7 there was a "remake" of this song in the sunken temple in Metroid Prime 2: echoes (which i personally like better than the red soil version)

@RaikenXion It probably helps that I only started "hardcore" gaming in 2008 and have never owned a non-Nintendo console. Mario and Metroid are the two franchises that most easily appeal to me due to my childhood love for dinosaurs. Other M was okay. Not deserving of a 2/5, but nothing earthshattering at all.
@LinkMarioSamus Yes that gud that u have been able to get in2 this franchise, its only ashame that majority of younger generation's mainstream r not like that. Other M is good, doesnt quite capture the same atmospheric feel of its predecessor and having Samus now talk also kinda spoils it I felt, but still a very faithful addition to the franchise, especially having gone bk to the classic side-scrolling that was a genius touch, on the part of Team-Ninja and Nintendo.
@RaikenXion Man I agree with you wholeheartedly on Super Metroid! Except that I played the game for the first time in Fall 2009, but on my second playthrough in Fall 2010 while my midterm exams were going on, I was having the time of my life. Even more ironic is that Other M had just come out - right after this franchise had crashed and burned, it felt so weird and awesome to be playing the very game that made it so big in the first place.
@Mistahjey lol, well I wud hav thought any1 who knows Metroid wud b aware that the games r heavily based on the Alien and Aliens films lol. The heroine being a woman, even Ridley is a homage to "Ridley Scott" who created Alien.

stucked in this game so long till i looked at the map and noticed that there must be a secret block in the room with the elevator to Nofair xD ....and the this music :) best in the game in my opinion :3
I remember watching my brother play this part and he spent like an hour trying to wall-jump up the red tube area instead of going down to Norfair XD
Such a classic, I miss the day, but I'll never forget. Im so glad I grew up through the mid 80s and early 90s, because it felt like all the best things came out of those decades, new Ideas were constantly popping up, and games were evolving. 2day it just feels like every things been done now. Super Metroid is a true classic, the first video-game that played out like a cinematic movie (purely because it was based on a classic sci-fi movie).
@Phantominfernox Your thoughts are shared with others around the age you were, though. My young nephew is just learning about the games I played as a kid, and he has only touched Metroid (though he's really trying) because it scares him. I suppose it's an odd feeling, but I'm proud. He's not above really getting into a game and feeling it.

I remember the music for this game made me not want to play it as a kid, it legitimately creeped me out back then. Although for a second, listening to the very beginning of this again actually sent a shiver down my spine. '>_> Probably because it's late and I'm tired though.
When the piano comes in, on this one and especially on the Torvus Bog version in MP2, it suddenly takes on an Oriental feel, doesn't it? I really like it.
I always loved highly atmospheric games like this. I never played it in it's day, it took a recommendation 14 years later... but it's still fantastic.

@SupraDarky hahaha agreed, the SNES has some very awesome replayable games. i dont have a SNES anymore, but i got most of my favorites on wii (VC). i even played super metroid on VC recently (just unlocked the "elevator" to tourian), and damn its a lot more challenging (challenging is good) than i remember (probably because i played it on emulator a lot), but its just as much fun as when it came out.
Great music, I think there is a part in the game where Samus revisits an area where she had defeated a boss character that had turned to dust. I can't say for certain if it was there but the music that accompanied it was so creepy and solemn, I'm not shy to admit I just stood in awe listening to it for a while. Awesome stuff, great post.

@SupraDarky Probably because the snes was home to some of the best RPG's of all time, like FF4 and 6, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore and Breath of Fire just to name a few

I never really payed attention much to the music of this great game as a kid, a few months back I decided to play again and see how games were back in my time. This time though I played and payed attention to everything. It takes a real gamer to appreciate everything about a game whether it is the graphics, the music, the gameplay or even the opening.

Very few games are as fun and atmospheric as this one. I probably have a very small list of games I could play every year and this would be in it. Castlevania IV would be another one and some other RPGs, mostly for the SNES for some reason.
