Ok this is driving me nuts... I remember hearing this from a really old video game review on YouTube in 2006/2008 or whatever. They basically played this as a short 10 second intro and the review starts. Can anyone help me out? I think this is from someone like AVGN who got really popular after videos like that were made.
I loved this song, this game, in 1997 when my friend introduced me to it back in high school. It's very dark, yet bright and goofy...some parts are like if Leonard Cohen teamed up with Bob Dylan did music for that Satan scene from The Adventures of Mark Twain & Huck Finn stop motion claymation movie. Yeah...I'm kind of going out on a limb with that comparison, anyone else see/hear it??? If you get it, totally like & be my friend!
It's kind of too bad that the whole theme doesn't play in game.

Might as well mention that Doug Tennapel and his buddies have a kickstarter going for the spiritual sequel of the Neverhood. The name is along the lines of Armikrog, there more information on Destructoid or the kickstarter page. There's a video up from Doug himself.
My gaming pc back when this came out was buff as hell. 4gb hdd (bigfoot) 128mb ram and a pentium1. I really loved this game.
I know I've played this playlist too much when I can whistle along with the theme when the intro ends...without ever having played the game.

Exactly 40 "pieces" of the wall including ones with a light-on button, spike-secured elevator and ending piece with a window and a data disc :D I counted it like 5 times so I'm pretty sure of it.
Just like Skullmonkeys, this game was pure gold. Such a great platformer to play for hours. The music was amazing as well.
My friends and I will set this song on repeat and let it play in the background while we hang out. After a while, it just feels natural, like it was always supposed to be there... we can let it play for hours with out complaints.
this is a really well composed soundtrack i wasnt expecting of such from a game but i could throw this onto my ipod and listen all day.

@HardWarUK I agree: The reason? Because since 2005 (I'd say even earlier, 2002, but let's say 2005), game's prices to produce have reached so high that taking risks is no longer feasible. Before, one game selling badly would cause the studio to try harder next time. Nowadays, one game selling badly will make a studio go bankrupt, so studios tend to go for tried and tested formulas. The only ones who can still get brave are indie developers. VALVe is also still a fan of taking risks.
First time I hear of this game, but this music (Pretty goddamn excellent) makes me want to find out about it. Hmm... I wonder how much it's on steam (If it's on there at all)?

Played this game when I was like 8. So weird.
I've listened to this theme through for quite a many times already. I'd love to play The Neverhood, because it would bring some fresh air into this "realistic HD all-3D" atmosphere that seems to be going on in both animated movies and games alike. Plus I haven't played that many point-and-click adventure games in my life, only one to be excact.

I recently bought the 2 cd set of music titled "Imaginarium: Songs from The Neverhood". Its awesome! Also has the skullmonkeys songs. My favorite is the bonus room song.

What is that low bass woodwind sound? a bassoon lol? I cant decide if i like or hate this its pretty odd sounding
Probably a baritone saxophone. Bassoon sounds a bit more moldy.
I find this to be a really pleasant sounding theme. The intrumentation is great and the melody is fun, just like the game. It really starts getting in your head after a couple listens.
I read about this in game magazines many years ago. Nice to finally hear a song from it.
