A flawed but still worthwhile experience. I did a screenshot LP of it before there was even much of a thing. I never called it that either in the early 2000s I just called it Gameplay Coverage.

This kinda sounds like the Final Battle 2 theme from Kirby's Adventure. Which is not surprising considering they're both composed by Jun Ishikawa.
You know, this makes me think this song inspired Masked Dedede's theme

It's a pretty crappy RPG with some serious flaws. But the soundtrack is simply astounding Looking back I can confidently say it carried this game and made me want to play it
Well I wouldn't go as far to call it crappy. Its certainly mediocre to average at best, but I still enjoyed it enough to spend a lot of time with and well the music was the best part.
Compared to other games from the same era yeah, it's a pretty crappy RPG. The difficulty is all over the place, the mapping system would never exist in the form that it was in today's games, the story is just pure unadulterated fuckery. It took me several playthroughs as well as lots of research to figure out who the fuck the hero is talking about in the final boss fight. Even comparing it to games like Paladin's Quest Etc it has glaring flaws I can't ignore. I would like to State for the record I enjoyed the hell out of it. It was one of my favorite games when I was younger. I loved switching spirits on the Fly, and while I will criticize the elemental cards system at used, at the time I found it fresh even if it ran out incredibly quickly and was unnecessarily simple or just plain unnecessary period in the face of so many games that did the same thing so much better in that era, I can comfortably call this one of the worst RPGs released for the SNES. Fuck, even the Dragonball and Sailor Moon RPGs did RPG better. Definitely dig pretty much every song from this game though. The soundtrack in visuals are phenomenal and there weren't many dungeon crawling games to compare it to on the Super Nintendo
Well it did come out in 1992. There weren't that many options at this time period for the SNES...I suppose Final Fantasy IV was out (I had to look that one up). The dialog and story while it had potential were pretty laughable in execution. I did a huge write up on it back in the early 2000s, I think I gave it a 6 or 6.5/10 which sure sounds crappy but my scale leaned towards 5 being about as boring average as it gets and anything lower was just putrid. Oh and I love Paladin's Quest I honestly don't see much wrong with it at all. 7th Saga sure there is a litany of reasons but Paladin's Quest wasn't liked because it wasn't Final Fantasy? Made no sense.
Ya I'm mostly about the music with this game, I love it...it helped me through some tough times. I still enjoy it more than 20 years later...im even planning to do some covers for the songs
I had a buddy sell me his Super Nintendo with some games due to him not being much of a gamer anymore. This game was one of the gems that came with it.

This game is awesome. When I played this back in the day, I absolutely hated anything first-person, but this game has awesome music, an imaginative fight sequence (the monsters in the cards move!! Simply awesome), and is really fun to play. It's one of those games that can be beat quickly, but is still fun to play again and again.
@SupraDarky I've never played it, but I can agree with you on the Kirby feel. That's what I like about Jun Ishikawa and Hirokazu Ando. :)
I'm playing through this game (bought it for $5) and was totally surprised that it A.) is an RPG by HAL Laboratories and B.) has an amazing soundtrack. I wondered if you liked the soundtrack as well and apparently you do! Haha.
I loved this game so much. It still, to this day, has me wanting to name my first boy Darwin... Yeah it's weird but DAMN this game rocked so hard... so very VERY hard.

The composer for the Kirby games, Jun Ishikawa also does the music for this game. You can really tell by the instruments used in the song. I've got the game's entire OST uploaded on my channel if anyone's interested.

One of the few games Ishikawa composed for outside of the Kirby series. You can definitely feel the Kirby vibe in this game's soundtrack. Arcana was a pretty good first person RPG, I rented it and finished it as a kid, I had a fun time.
