The fluttering melody hella reminds me of something but I can't figure out what. The note progression does sound like it'd be suitable for a song chorus.
I remember renting this game from Blockbuster and eventually bought it at an old game store but never really played it as an adult. It still meant something to me and this track is awesome.

Birdman theme was the best.. I still have it on my playlists!
Starts off relaxing, then it turns into a Peter Gabriel song... which is still pretty cool I suppose.
The only thing I know about Pilotwings is that there is a Pilotwings stage in Super Smash Bros. 4, which is one of my favorite stages by the way. This song is really calm and relaxing though.
That game was ok...Just had an awfully lonely feel to it.

If there is inspiration from Steve Winwood it is indirect. He is a great artist and I have grown up listening to his music. When you write, it is a blend of all your influences molded by your own direction.

Hey Dan, since I see you still seem to be checking comments on this, maybe you can answer my question if you can recall your thoughts back in the 90s when making this track. Was there any inspiration from the song "Back in the High Life Again" by Steve Winwood for this track? I have to say that there are parts of the music in it that totally remind me of the Winwood song. Thanks!

Pilotwings 64 is just delicious!!! I cant even tell how great I feel while flying in this game, such peaceful soundtrack!!! Only few games made me feel this way, another being Wave Race 64!!
