Super Castlevania 4 was my 1st horror themed game.
Amazing track especially given the time it came out. This was actually my first horror themed game at age 6, and one of if not the most amazing for me is SoTN!
Haunted House for the Wii. Not the best, but I still have a lot of fun playing it. Some pretty clever pop culture references in it, too, such as Evil Dead, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Edward Scissorhands, Lord of the Rings, and more. Hell, there are even CLUE references.
I love, love, love the buildup in this compilation. One minute you start off listening to a catchy 8-bit tune, the next its turned into a rock piece, all without ever noticing the transitions.

Friday the 13th. I can't remember if I eventually managed to actually beat it or not, but it was certainly pretty creepy at the time. Castlevania II was an early, and more memorable 'horror' game, and one of the first "open-world-ish" game that I actually managed to finish (with perhaps a bit of help from Nintendo Power, but I was still proud of it at the time).

There's a Castlevania easter egg and Vampire Killer song in Contra - Hard Cops. Best Contra game IMO - the song is called "Contra Hard Corps OST - Simon 1994rd" Somehow I didn't notice this until later on when I played this game on my genesis(I don't think I was aware that Konami made both games back then). It's pretty obvious it's from Castlevania when you see it, it was a boss with a whip.
I think my first "Horror Game" was Super Metroid. I would watch my father play it since I was too young. And when he bet Mother Brain, me and my little sister weren't allowed to watch, but my older sister was ;) I bet it myself about 5 years ago and it was an awesome feeling :D

Literally the only pure horror game i have played and finished is Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem on Gamecube. Anyone who has played will know what i am talking about when ask them about the Sanity Meter or what happens when it goes to zero.

Castlevania was the first horror themed game I played. The horror themed games I remember the most are Resident Evil 2 followed by Silent Hill 2. I remember my friends and I playing them over and over and even though only one person was in control we were always scared on those first playthroughs and loved it.
They're pretty sweet, and many totally new to me.

I'll be honest, I actually was less fond of Vampire Killer, NOT because I think it's a bad song at all, but because it's not quite as... dark? as the best Castlevania songs are. It's like, it's not quite as atmospheric as some of it's best entries. At least the NES versions of the song. It's pretty much the only thing I felt Simon's Quest did completely better. So much of the music in that game felt oppressive, which is exactly the way it should be. :o

I believe it was Alone in the Dark.. The demo version of the first level from the first game. I think it only had one enemy, but the atmosphere sure scared the crap out of me lol

My first was also CV, the arcade version thereof in fact. And it was quite terrifying - relentless waves of enemies, precise jumping that required plenty of foresight and good timing, bosses that really put the pressure on you... even to this day there isn't a "scarier" entry in the whole series, and that was one that used bright orange and blue all the time!!

first horror game for me was actually Castlevania SOTN. Since then I've played and beaten 1, IV, SOTN, HOD and Chronicles. IV i actually beat in a single sitting on my first playthrough, which took about 9 hours and I've beaten it twice since! Best VG series ever!
For me was Metal gear solid, i remember that i freak out everytime that they found me and the scream snake does, jajaja but i know that game is just action, but in those days i freak out xD, congratulations and thanks supradarky, excellent job =D

@bsznm all interesting points to ponder.... perhaps though your opening theorem is itself incorrect and many people don't percieve VK as becoming progressively worse? CV3 vampire killer (Deja Vu ) is inarguably better, while SCV4 and Dracula X could be considered better by a matter of opinion :)
Greatest cv game is Symphony Of The Night. Maybe because it features the old cv atmosphere and lot of new stuff also. And the soundtrack is great.

the videogame makers should listen to all these 80's 8-bit music! this is what excited me as a player before when graphics were not at their best... gameplay was challenging and music was thrilling! The 1980's Konami and Capcom music guys were amazing

@bsznm Lol, I had thoughts about the same things at one point. Technically, music is only a form of expression so generally in reality there is no standard for quality but a preference of types. I think its kind of a mix of both of your latter statements, because certain types of music are defined by the type of sounds made, and the newer ones might have had poor instrument choice and could use work on the arrangement. Kinda like bramble blast. The new one has a different feel with orchestration
notice how it gets perceptively worse as they arrange it in more powerful sound systems. is that because the limited instruments in the earlier ones subconsciously lower our standards? or is it because the theme was truly good, but was so tailored to the limited palette that it doesn't work outside of it? or is it just because the later arrangements happen to be poorly executed? these are the stupid things i think about
One of my (non-overused) favourites are 'Dwelling of Doom' and 'The Silence of Daylight'.
I gotta say, the music in Judgment was probably the best part about that game. (More Empty Tome, please, unless I haven't seen it yet on your list?)

The first games I have owned/played included Super Castlevania IV. Watching my cousin beat Dracula was one of the most powerful memories I have when I was five-ish. Super Castlevania IV is one of my top ten favorites (I'd say no. 2, underneath Symphony of the Night)

When I was young and I rented Ocarina of Time for the first time I loved it. But that first dungeon scared the shit out of me when I was 6-10 years old, especially the boss. She gave me nightmares for weeks. So I have to say that Ocarina of Time was the first horror game I have played. Well actually the first game I was ever afraid of. Not really sure if that counts though.
My favorite game is Circle of the Moon... By the way the Vampire Killer theme plays near the end of the game when Nathan is in the observatory.
Lament of Innocence was both my first (as in, the "purest") horror-themed game and my first and still only Castlevania game this far (unfortunately). Even if it's not the best in the series (I can't really tell), I'm happy I finally could try a series I've been so curious about for many years - due to its awesome music. And now I know I'd love the rest of the games too... there's simply no way a Castlevania game could go wrong.
There are so many fantastic songs from this series, it's mind-blowing. Gears Go Awry, Iron Blue Intention, Dance of the Holy Man, Bloody Tears, Vampire Killer, Riddle, Forest of Monsters, In Search of a Secret, Within These Castle Walls, Wood Carving Partita, Garden Forgotten By Time, Heart of Fire, Clock Tower, An Empty Tome, Tower of Dolls, Sorrow's Distortion, Prayer, The Tragic Prince, Wandering Ghosts, Prayer of a Tragic Queen, Abandoned Castle... and that's just off the top of my head!!!!

For me too, I guess SOTN is on top (must have finished it 20 times at least), with Dracula X following closely behind. In terms of horror game... maybe Resident Evil 2? The 1st real scaring moment was walking into a quiet and narrow hallway (that you already crossed once before) only to find a scary motherf***ing... thing... bursting out of the window! and you add like 5 sec to down him or you were dead... As a kid, I was scared as f***!!!
Super Castlevania IV is the first and only one I've played, and the best (the song is also the best)
I personally used to stray from horror games, thats why the first horror game i played was RE3: Nemesis, fun game that i borrowed from the library. i feel sorry for those of you that said "luigis mansion" that probably means you are relatively new to gaming... and "never played castlevania" = you are missing out on a great series.
This was my first horror game as well (Castlevania NES) As far as all time fave, it's a tie between Dracula X for the SNES and SOTN for the PS1. Kinda funny seeing as how Dracula X was the prequel to SOTN storyline wise. And for Konami to keep it 2D on a system focusing more on 3dD and it being one of the best games of all time (along with the music) it's phenomenal.

My first horror game that I played was Resident Evil. I never really played the game too much. I was never a fan of the horror genre but then Dead Space came out...

Haha! I love how it goes through all of the versions. I haven't been a big Castlevania fan, but i gotta admit this music is pretty awesome, especially the way it evolves. Scary game... Resident evil 2... I was 3 and my brother was playing with his friends. The beginning came and all the fire was scaring me. People groaning and moaning made it so eerie and his friend died a the beginning. Blood spattered all over the screen and I got so scared I ran to the bathroom and wet myself... lol

I'd have to agree with Super Castlevania IV, though Symphony of the Night is a close second, and Simon's Quest a 3rd. Simon's Quest was probably my first horror themed game, but I haven't kept track because I'm not especially partial to the theme moreso than any other.
Resident Evil for me. the first one, on the playstation. My slightly older cousin, my brother, and myself, with nothing but our wits and a strategy guide, and screams and freak-outs, it was one hard, scary, and amazing game! We were at it for nights on end over the summer, and our titanic trio grew to take on many horror games in that fashion.

My opinion flips occasionally, but I've often found Super Castlevania IV is my favorite in the series. The game has top notch music too, best in the series. It stands out even more than the gameplay.
It's intresting to see that the very best version of Vampire Killer is still the original Castlevania 1 8bit theme. =) Also i must say VK is right up there with wily 1 theme from mm2, journey to silius title theme and many others, as one of -THE- 8-bit classics that always will be remembered. Granted, many other tunes in the castlevania series are just as good.. but this is the one everyone remembers.

Super Castlevania 4 = fucking awesome
There are the classic ones and the Metroid-like ones. If you're going for the classics I'd say Super Castlevania 4 is a good choice. If you're going for the Metroidvanias, just don't pick up Order of Ecclesia first. I'd reccomend Aria of Sorrow (for the GBA) or Symphony of the Night (PS, Sega Saturn, PSN and XBOX Live Arcade I think)

My first horror themed game? Ghosts N' Goblins. NES. This along with and Megaman and Punch Out set me up on my path for breezing through harder games because they were the first things I had to work with. Castlavania was tough but with practice being GNG, it wasn't as hard as it should've been. Great game still though.
Favorite Castlevania would be SOTN.. then probably followed by AOS/DOS. Favorite version of Vampire Killer for me would be from Dracula X. Love that one a lot. First real scary game was Resident Evil Director's Cut PS1 Regular not dual shock. Man that game scared the crap out of me... I can still remember the dog jumping into the window. Man... awesome. Nowdays RE series are mostly action games... sad... Scariest game to date for me would be Silent Hill 2. Now that's epic on its own level.

Just an awesome track; there have been variations of it into every genre I can imagine. Also, my first "horror" game was SCVIV for the SNES. Also my favourite CV game. One of the resident evils was my first Horror themed game. So I guess RE3, REmake, and RE0 are my first ones, since I remember them around the same time, and REmake, specifically the shark part, stands out to me. I watched my brother play, as I was like 7-9, and was too scared to play, and I kinda still am. Not good at RE, cept for 4.
Funnily enough, my first horror/action game was also Castlevania IV for the SNES. I must've been around 7, I dont remember exactly. But I still love listening the music from that game to this day, even though my fav of the series is actually SOTN that I first played on the PS1 and now I have it on my 360 :) I recommend the Dracula battle rock arrange I and II albums for anyone who wants to hear kick-ass heavy metal versions of all these classics!! Those two albums have no equal, IMO.

My first horror themed game would probably be Castlevania 2, I missed the first one. Glad I had Nintendo Power for that one. My favorite would be Silent Hill 1 or 2. They're not horror "themed" though. They ARE horror. Resident Evil and Castlevania are horror themed because you don't feel horror while you're playing them. Not usually anyway.

I've never played any of the castlevania games (I really should), but the first "horror themed" game I had to play was probably (if you count it) Doom or Area 51, old shooters for arcades. If they don't count then it goes to either RE2 or Parasite Eve.
My fave Castlevania would have to be Portrait of Ruin. First CV I ever bought and absolutely loved it. :) Fave horror game would have to be System Shock 2. The atmosphere was just amazing for the limited tech.

First horror-themed game I EVER EVER played? Resident Evil. And my favorite game in the Castlevania series would have to be Symphony of the Night, closely followed by Super Castlevania IV. I'm a sucker for non-linear gameplay, exploration, leveling up and collecting things. The Castlevania games for Game Boy Advance are also superb, IMO.

Castlevania IV was the first one of these games I ever played. Dawn of Sorrow and Symphony of the Night are probably better objectively, but Castlevania IV had one of the SNES's finest soundtracks and it's just flat fun to play. I still love it.

SOTN was my first Castlevania when I downloaded it over XBL two years ago. Since then I've played the 3 GBA games, Super Castlevania 4, and Dawn of Sorrow.

i frigin love castlevania, even number 2 which had that really pain in the ass night and day crap, but my first horror themed game was the first resident evil which my older brother had and it scared the living crap out of me, i was like 6 years and now i friggin love the entire horror genre of games
