Pretty impressive to hear the Yamaha YM2612 convincingly emulate an entire rock band drum set, complete with snares, toms, cymbals, and a bass drum.
This is honestly better than the SNES version.

This is waaaaaay better than the SNES version. Compared them to see what the fuss was about. The SNES versions treble is barely audible, so all you can hear is the (over-powering) drums and the melody is almost muted. Can see that the quality of the Genesis instruments isn't great, but overall this version, whilst harsher, is certainly more clear and not completely overpowered by drums + bass.

This is one of the few songs I think sounds better on Mega Drive / Genesis than on SNES. It's usually the other way around!
First stage of super turrican is the same song, but its using the snes soundchip, so its a much better version
@Bigbudd0045 The genesis soundchip is objectively superior, but suffers from incompetent development most of the time. Any song from a game like Granada or Sol-Deace would sound like dick on the SNES.

@Bigbudd0045 The majority of games used the default soundset, because it would cost them money to make a proper one. With a proper soundset, the genesis sounds better in every way.
+Ghreivyn yeah, no. The Genesis has a distinct metalic sound to it. It works best in games that take advantage of it. But every game that came out with the same music on it for SNES and Gen, sounds better on the SNES. The reverberation on the SNES is due to the way the chip worked. The SNES is a much better piece of hardware, benefiting from coming out later than the GEN. The SMS is superior on technical level to the NES, but the same doesnt hold true for the next gen.

Basically, the hardware wasn't up to snuff in game consoles way back when. So people had to make up for the lack of good technology with good melodies. Games now and days still have good music, but it's much easier to figure out who really isn't a good musician now compared to back then. A lot of them, haha...
I don't know why, I don't rank it up there as one of the most epic tracks, but this is one I could literally loop for hours and not notice the time disappear.
Thunder Force 3 sounded MUCH better than Thunder Spirits. That's probably the best example of where the Genesis/MD excelled. Basically, the Mega Drive's modular synthesis was better for electronic, high tempo compositions, and the SNES's sample based music was better for "out the box" "orchestral" sounding music. A better music programmer could generally get more out of the Genesis, but a mid range one could do better with the set samples of the SNES.
A very rare case of the Mega Drive version of a song being better than than the SNES version.

@SyriusBelsferg It wasn't just the Genesis, pretty much 50% of all games on every platform back then never made adequate use of their respective sound hardware. There were plenty of great soundtracks on the Genesis- the Sonic games, Streets of Rage 1 and 2 and all of Treasure and Konami's games are the obvious examples, but then there were the hidden gems like ResQ, Dangerous Seed, Socket, Verytex, Jewel Master, Shura no Mon, ATP Tour Championship Tennis, M.U.S.H.A., The Hybrid Front...

I remember playing this game on the Gameboy. Soundtrack was quite similar, but still...goosebumps nonetheless. Good call for including this track.

@heyjo0205 Yeah, the newer ones have more complex melodies. Very hard to transcribe without a piano.
Stage 1-2 and 3-2 are better, eventhough they are really short. You have to play this on the most difficult level and try to obtain all the crystals to hear all the music. Trying to beat this game and collect all items without cheating is super uber difficult.

Chris Huelsbeck really did a great job with Turrican-Music. (SNES Version is the best i know.) This are memories of truely great games. Today all they're able to do is good graphic. Sound and Storyline is not important to them. They should look back at games like this! (IMO Super Turrican (SNES) > Super Turrican 2)

Very well converted music for the Megadrive which normally suffered with these translations Amiga music is a little nicer however and even mr Huelsbeck himself would say this Some of CH's best work is for the Turrican series with T2 being his best of the lot
