I wonder when Nintendo will drop Mario. Actually, I wonder when all of the companies will drop their mascots and make something innovative and new for us.....
You don't have to drop a mascot to make something new.
You don't have to squeeze out a franchise to make money, but people do because it's easier.
I doubt they will to be honest. I mean, it is one of the most iconic video game series of all time, arguably THE most iconic, and correct me if I'm wrong, but if I'm right then it's also the longest running (I don't really think Pac-Man counts anymore at this point).

What a silly argument. Nintendo takes more risks and experiments more with Mario than any other "mascot" developer does with their properties. I'm hardly a huge Mario fan, but come on, you can't say they're all even remotely close to being similar.

@Oldstalk I must have just gotten confused. It has very similar instruments and sounds, 0:00 - 1:20 really could be a one piece song. I guess the Mars-esq rhythm made me think I heard it before.

Wow, what a game. I was blown away by the actual use of live instruments throughout the game's soundtrack, as was I blown away with how fitting the music is to each and every galaxy. I imagine myself about to break into enemy territory, ready to kick some ass. :D

I was wondering if Super Mario Galaxy would make it onto this list. Now that I think about it, Super Mario Galaxy is the spiritual sequel to Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. 3D Mario games are few and far between, but damn are they good.
This is one of my favorite Mario themes. Buoy Base beats all Mario themes IMO

@PaperMario15 I agree with your comment. Seems like most gaming websites prefer SMG 2 but I prefer the first one. The music was memorable (I can't remember any tune from smg2), and I played until I got all of the stars. SMG 2 was more of the same, which wasn't bad, but it was not as good as playing SMG 1 for the first time.
@oscarnswe Galaxy 2 perfected all the mechanics in the first one, and actually had a competent HUD. I'd go with that one.
@oscarnswe Easier to decide than you'd think. Galaxy 1 was a huge step forward for Mario in terms of both gameplay and music. Galaxy 2 was a mishmash of recycled content with a few lousy new features. Take your pick.
The worst thing about this game is that I don't know which mario galaxy I like more :(

@TheMrCrazyDude21 1 was great, but the galaxies were boring, only a few faves, and the soundtrack can't be matched, 2 is better in every way, other than story and maybe a few other little things, like the hub, although the hub in 1 was inconvenient, it felt right for the sub series, its more convenient in 2 to have a map system, but it doesn't feel right, AND HOW THE HELL ARE GALAXIES INSIDE A WORLD????? I thought worlds were in galaxies, what evs, nintendo logic. 1 feels more graceful though.

@cojosao616 Super Mario Galaxy 2 isn't even in the same league as the original. The original wasn't 50% recycled content, so that's kind of an advantage.
This makes me so glad that nintendo was thinking about putting an all-orchestrated soundtack in the upcoming zelda game

Gusty Garden has an excellent intro, although I always thought that it was a bit too dramatic for a relatively calm stage.
The soundtrack in this game is one of the best I've heard. I feel in love with the soundtrack so much that I bought it on playasia (2-Disc Version) and listen to it every now and then. Gusty Garden as everybody has said is the better track of the whole soundtrack.
When looking to gameplay aspects galaxy is definitely better than sunshine You gotta see beyond personal taste, im not stating you can't like it better.

Even though the game wasnt revolutionary, I believe that Super Mario Galaxy surpassed Super Mario 64 in every aspect! And I'm pretty sure it had something to do with the unique setting and the amazing soundtrack!

Where did you find this? He seriously only composed two/three for this game? I didn't know that. Battlerock is my favorite, then Good Egg, Melty Molten, Observatory, Buoy Base, and I actually can't keep that in order past Battlerock.

Mario Galaxy plays more like classic Mario platformers, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

If you think about it, the original mario games were all linear. When the series went to 3D (mario 64) it suddenly became non-linear.
I have to disagree, I believe this song is one of the best. I think it's the melancholy violin that mixes with the marching drum so well.
What I meant by linear (and don't take that as a bad thing, because it certainly isn't), is that the paths you need to take to get to the different stars are handed to you. You are forced to take that certain path to get to that certain star. Except for the secret stars of course. And this is why M64 didn't feel as linear.
no, he just wanted the game to be a refreshing change of pace from the usual platforming games. i dont think this one is any more linear than SM64 though.

Yeah it's better than SM64, and that's coming from someone who has amazing memories of that game. It's probably the best game I've played in years. It's more linear though, so it's more like a 2D Mario in that sense. Awesome game.
