You gotta recognise how great the battle theme of Phantasy Star II is... Another classic by SEGA! Probably the first truly great battle theme!

The Gamecube version ruined this them in my opinion. The biggest downgrade has to be changing the chiptune sound to a terrible synth.

megaman legends meets chrono cross.. if only i had known the dreamcast had such class back in the day.. perhaps i could have had a cheerier childhood. i was a nintendo kid. if it was on ps1, saturn, or dreamcast, but not on gamecube or n64.. i'd never heard of it outside tomb raider and metal gear solid. quite sad.. the wonders of bomberman 64, jet force gemini, perfect dark, lost kingdoms, and yugioh: falsebound kingdom only keep your interest in nintendo for so long before you need something new. yeah i read about the remake for gamecube. still cant help but wonder what other things sega had in store that i missed though...

I never played this game b4 but I watched an LP of it and it's an awesome game with cool characters,beautiful colours and interesting story and nice music.
Whether you have a Dreamcast, Gamecube, or Wii (not the mini, that can't run GC games) you can get this game! I recently 100% it and I have to say, it's boatloads of fun all the way through!

It has such a rich, colorful and huge world. larger than life characters and has brilliant ship-to-ship battles. You can even customize your own island base.. and you can skip long attack animations, never forget that. there is easily 30+ hours of gameplay without even going for 100%. some might be put out by the Dreamcast graphics, but those people don't know what they lose.
This game is so fucking good! Along with Xenogears, the best jRPG of all time, IMO.

The Gamecube port had a bunch of extra features that weren't in the Dreamcast version.

Because the Dreamcast is one of the finest consoles ever designed, and it holds up pretty well even today. Besides, Dreamcast emulation is never quite up to par with the real deal. Not yet, anyway.
The controller's really the only bad thing about the Dreamcast.

I think the game was already technically dead. It only sold 100,000 copies in Asia, and barely over 10,000 outside of Asia. Kind of our fault, we weren't devoted enough to buy it.

This sounds a little different than the GC version. Corny game at some points, but sooooooooo fun. Had some dark and mysterious moments that were so fitting.

this game is my favorite of all time. The final boss battle(s) had me up until like 6 am cause i just couldn't put the damn thing down. Good god I love this game.
Argh we need a new game in this series! i love this game, it's a hidden gem, very great and under-rated, im so glad i still own it. They should also remake this too in HD.

I borrowed the Dreamcast version once and eventually got the Gamecube version. One of my favorite games.
Dreamcast was the most underrated console ever... had Sonic adventure 2, Marvel vs capcom 2, Soul Calibur 1, Phantasy Star Online and Skies of Arcadia... made me the player i am now

@spectrevampire Well I can answer that one. Quality on the dreamcast one was better. The gamecube one had to reduce music quality because they wanted to cram it all on one disc and with the changes to texture polygons and reduced loading time/saving time yeah it makes sense. (Sorta a jumbled post owo)

i love the music in this game but i do feel the game itself is a bit over rated i mean its meant to be a dreamcast game and it looks like an n64 game and i felt it was a very generic JRPG i found a copy on ebay a while back and i never beat the game due to boredom which is a shame as i wanted to like it but it all felt a bit seen that done that i feel im going to get a few thumbs down for saying that LOL

@Ryu416 Aaah, gutted! So close to getting the lines right.. been ages since I played it and youtube is shockingly low on Moonfire Cannon parodies and whatnot. Ramirez was a hell of a villian, I preferred Galcian slighty more though. "There's something about this guy Vyse... I don't think we can take him!" Piastol was always a hell of a fight too.

"Your trial shall be swift and just. Now face your punishment!". Plus the always classic "Moonstone cannon, FIRE!". I also personally like the quote "Die" from Drachma AND Ramirez.

@shoryukenakuma Both on the Dreamcast and the Gamecube, it was marketed poorly, and most of the Hardcore were snobish to classic style RPGs like SoA. It is one of the best RPG on the GameCube and I still own this game!

I always thought this game was underrated. I still play it to this day! I really liked the ship battles. It was a unique change of pace from the random ground battles. I can safely say this is one of the greatest rpg's ever made.

I got the legends port for the gamecube when I was in 5th grade. This theme was stuck in my head for like the first week i got it because I got stuck at the part when you have to rescue Vyse's dad in Valua. I had to grind a bit but finally beat it
@vincent207 Skies of Arcadia stands well above Tales of Symphonia if only because it doesn't draw off of as many anime cliches. The spirit of SoA's story-telling, music, and characters simply puts it in the highest league, alongside games like Chrono Trigger and FF6. ToS is certainly an excellent game, but nothing in it comes close to the epic sweep of SoA's adventure.

I used to play this game a lot of times when i was younger. This is the best of jrpg's ever made for me. I remember when i turn on SoA first time- an unforgettable experience

its my favourite game. RE4 is just behind it. This game is great cause of the spirit of the game. RE4 is great cause of the gameplay, so these games are great for different reasons (this just my opinion!)

I am completely in love with both SoAL and ToS. They're not just some of my favorite RPGs, they're some of my favorite games PERIOD! Having to chose between them is just... no. There's just no way.

Ridiculously epic RPG. I loved all the different characters throughout the game, especially the main cast and then all of the many crew members you could get. It was awesome how your crew members actually followed the story too, they would have new things to say when the plot changed. If you actually talk to them regularly you appreciate their unique and interesting personalities. Attention to details like that really made the game come alive. The music was just one more part of the epicness.

The game had pirates, pirate ninjas, pirate robots, flying ships, wars, the best fashion disasters ever seen except in Ugly Betty, the best sound effects from characters and it had special attacks that took 10 minutes and filled up your screen with proper mental explosions and A FUCKING MOON SLAMMING ON TOP OF YOUR OPPONENT. Oh and it was a massive, engaging and entertaining RPG fully worth buying.

I loved this game. You could tell when a random battle was going to happen before it did because the Dreamcast would start whirring up. My friends and I would all start shouting and being stupid when we heard the disk start up. Such a great game.
oh yeah. i can garuntee you'll play this game a lot. I have the gamecube version and really want the dreamcast one (along with a dreamcast xD) and its amazing imo. I've played the game at least 8 times now and still haven't gotten tired of it.

Problem with that is also what made this game so great- You explored everything, and all the plotlines were resolved nicely... Any sequel would have to be like, 100 years in the future. A Prequel might work, though...

Man, was there a better RPG out then? I bought FFIX and this on the same day back in Nov 2000 but SoA held my attention much better than FFIX did. SoA is just so...wonderfully generic. That might sound like I'm knocking it but nothing could be further from the truth. The game is a gem because it took all the archetypes (vyse and crew are pretty cookie cutter!) but made them interesting and I was happy to "know" these characters for the time I spent playing it.

Y'know Its easy to forget how nice this tune is when using aika to fry them up right away cause of the really frequent random battles.... oh well nice tune indeed.

1. I can't be bothered to work out if it really is missing the dominant chord but who says a piece has to have the dominant chord in it? i think the piece sounds great, I havent actually worked out what the chords are though. In classical music or something it might have to have the dominant, but this is modern times now! who says that chord needs to be in the piece? I might be wrong.

Hm..,well, with all you superior (not) music skill I would assumed you knew that most musicians who are very talented on one instrument..go to another in its instrumental family or outside it's instrumental family. Being a composer *doesn't*, let me repeat *doesn't*, change how experienced you are in music because an instrumental musician knows just as much..alright. And yea, I might view to listen to your supposedly good so called ,remixes, are and decide how musically talented you claim to be.

What is up with you...I've been watching these VGM countdowns and all I see you saying how bad the music was or the music was missing some chords. Just enjoy the music and stop showing off your worthless little music knowledge you know because that does apply to any of the music on the VGM....most of the music are good classics.

Best game on the system though! and ofc it's worth it <3333!! Never got my hand on the Gamecube version, though I think I'll get it for collecting only since it's a game that deservers more credit than it did receive. It was well received among people who played it, but it stayed an unknown game to those who didn't know it excisted or even tried it.
Agreed. It's worth owning a Dreamcast for this game alone. This game also had a kick ass soundtrack. Gotta love it.
