Is it just me or does this ... not sound like the kind of song you'd expect to hear from a horror genre (I've never played any Silent Hill games)? Are these games actually like RPGs or something with stories and complex characters and everything?
The first 3 (maybe even the 4th) are. You are missing out, particularly if you never played SH2 and SH3
@AlexanderEiffel Yeah, those two particularly I've heard great things about. Never played them though (I have way too many fantastic-sounding games on my list of things to play unfortunately) so I probably won't get around to it for a while.
Well, they are horror games with stories and complex characters, and I don't think what would make anyone think an horror game can't have those. Well, maybe all the shitty first person horror games which revolves only around jumpscares...
This is what horror games used to be. It's sad that these days all people think of when they hear "horror" is jumpscare crap.

Just so I have a taste of what you say is what they used to be, what would you guys say is the definitive horror game (regardless of whether or not it's Silent Hill) that makes the most of the style and would be a good one to use as the face of the genre?
@KTBMedia It's an interesting question, for many the answer will simply be this game, Silent Hill 2. It doesn't rely on cheap spooks (although there are one or two in there, of course), instead it focuses on creating a bleak setting and examining the character's psyche, on a much deeper level than may be apparent initially. 3 also achieves a similar effect with a story coming from a very, very different angle to that of James', but playing the first game (which, again, comes from a very different tone to 2) is essential before playing 3 as it is a direct continuation, where 2 can stand perfectly on it's own. If you thik you'd enjoy old school point and click games, I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream is a very psychological experience. The "gameplay" is pretty much what you'd expect from such a game, but the story and exploration of it's characters stand out way beyond a regular old game of it's style. I don't find it grabs me in a normal "horror" way, but it definately sticks with you. There are other great horror games that don't rely on psychological horror to achieve their spooks. For something more on atmosphere and the thrill of survival, the game that does that best for me is the remake of Resident Evil. Put it on a more challenging difficulty and it's a very tense experience. Plus it has a pretty interesting story if you pay attention all the information available to you. And hey, if you still want to play something hide and seek style (kinda like these modern jump scare only games, only better) take a look at Siren + Blood Curse which nail the atmosphere.

The game is just as good, if you like puzzle type/ survival horror, then this is the game to play. It's hard as fuck though
RE is getting rebooted so it can stick to the Survivor horror.
How hard is it for Survival horrors to come back to this? I mean come on man, Look at RE (Resident Evil) for example, the new one is pure action, but if I buy a Survivor horror game, i'm expecting some crap to fall out of my pants. It wasn't a bad game but, in my opinion, the last Silent Hill kind of had that atmosphere into it, but it could've been better.

The game is not cliche. The basic story is. But the way Team Silent told the story made it not cliche at all. Sorry if I confused you. I left that part out in my explanation, about the amnesiac figuring out what is going on that made the story kind of cliche.
I'm loving this song. I haven't played the game but this song is so "catchy" it has great rhythm. Plus I like the guitar sound in this, it's not a annoying-screeeech as some guitars sound

This game is more than just a game, it is a true work of art.
It is not the story that is great, it is plain cliché. But it is how it is told that makes it one of my favorite games to play, like the Half-Life series. Other than that, I completely agree with you.

Playing all Silent Hill titles, I'd agree with you. The horror factor is the weakest in Silent Hill 2. However, the depressing mood and storyline makes up for that and it's definitely worth playing through just to experience the game.

I can't imagine hearing this after any ending accept the 'Leave' ending. It's just too hopeful. Helped me get out of the funk I was in playing the game. A good kind of powerful and emotive funk, but a very heavy one none the less.
I do recommend getting it. It isn't that scary tbh. It has so many great aspects to it. The story is top notch, one of the best soundtracks in any game ever, phenomenal atmosphere, and I could go on. I defiantly think you should tough it out.
If you want the game for the sole purpose of knowing when this song plays then don't bother. It plays during the intro and that is about it. If you want a really good game however then I'd say buy it for anywhere less than 40$. If it was longer then it would be worth alot more but since it is as short as it is......
if you're easily scared, i would suggest playing through it with a guide, you can anticipate some of the surprise scares

Played the first Silent Hill but never played part 2 back then. Bought the Silent Hill HD Collection and finally played it, awesome game and the soundtrack is great!
Both Silent Hill 2 and 3 had an amazing soundtrack......But my personal favorite song from 2 is Love Psalm.

Great song but why is it called Laura's theme? I mean it's the main theme of the game, uses the same melody as SH1 theme, and represents Silent Hill as a whole. Also during the video it shows pretty much his quest to find his wife (with bits of other parts). So why is named after Laura and not Mary's theme?
Silent Hill is my favourite video game series that I've never played. I've watched most of the games played on YouTube and read into them, but short of a small amount of Homecoming I've yet to really experience Silent Hill first hand. But I have ordered the HD collection (2 & 3) so that should be fun if it doesn't scare the shit out of me.

This game is a masterpiece in Interactive Media. Chills thinking about some scenes. Not fright-formed chills, but chills formed from reverie's into my past, and the emotions each character experienced.

I really would love it if i had a teacher that knows about Silent Hill 2, one of the best stories ever that really should be taught in classes, i mean it covers so many things. Morals, love, sorrow, madness, so many things. Plus lots of figurative language since everything is basically a metaphor.

I just beat this game a day ago. The ending was quite crazy i have to say, and it was all really depressing. Although i wish my older bro didn't beat the game before me. I ended up getting the rebirth ending. Although if i were to get any ending i would want the in water. cuz i heard that's the True ending.

lol me and my older brother were about to play some Silent Hill 2 the other day. So i got it ready, but then he randomly tackled me. We grappled on the ground for what seemed like 30 minutes, and during that entire time this song was playing because we kept out PS2 on. Strangely this song fit our sparring session quite well.

I'm assuming you refer to mainstream watered-down hip-hop like most people who think of rap as a genre, but there's really not enough stylistic differences between the two, besides one being a shallow and generic version of the other

@Akujitsu That's because movies now are all about money, where it is almost impossible for any form of an indie project to break through. As its so money driven any real innovation is killed off. I don't think gaming has quite gone that way yet, and am currently enjoying modern gaming, albeit i still constantly reminisce on what it used to be like. So i definitely agree that gmaes have overtaken film as an artform.
@Akujitsu but that's almost worse. Dragoon's soundtrack is depressingly mediocre. It's battle music is awful, along with it's unfitting "alternate" battle music that sounds like elevator music. And the rest of the soundtrack isn't much better. At least put Ocarina of Time, Super Metroid, and Secret of mana on such a list before you put Dragoon...

My favorite song out of all the Silent Hill games. Akira Yamaoko is easily one of the truly great video game composers. His work on Silent Hill is on par with what Nobuo Uematsu has done for Final Fantasy.

I admit I like "Theme of Laura" a lot but not only does it not mesh well with the atmosphere of the game but it doesn't mesh with the rest of the album.
I recommend this game to anyone who is more interested in a story than any other aspect of the game. It has way too much symbolism though, which is why I love it.
The game is very good, you can't look at really anything about the game or otherwise it ruins the entire story.

I remember playing Silent Hill 1 when I was 10 or 11 and yeah, I couldn't sleep at all. Especially since I played it at night time by myself with the lights out and the door closed.

This entire theme in my opinion didn't mesh well with the dark story of Silent Hill 2. It sounds too happy while the story of Silent Hill 2 is dark and depressing.

Sadly I haven't played any Silent Hill but holy crap this song is good! I think it even makes it to my top 5 VG songs ever.
Never played a Silent Hill game for the life of me. Probably missing out but wow, didn't realise the music was so haunting. Konami makes some of the best quality games I think especially when it comes down to detail.
SH2 is also available on PC, and for sale on Amazon. I'd warn you to get a USB gamepad to play it, though! The keyboard makes the controls even clunkier, perhaps a little too much.

If this isn't your FAVORITE Silent Hill song, you have no taste. It better be at least in the top 3. To me, this is MY FAVORITE VG song. There are SO many emotions in the song itself. Its as deep as Silent Hill 2. Slow tune, starts upbeat, goes dark, then goes more like, soothing yet creepy...It just is all over the place and I can't get enough of it.

Amazing song. Silent Hill 1 and 2 are one of the best games I've ever played.
The guitar intro is the absolute best. There are times when I might play it ten times in a row and skip the rest of the song itself.
Silent hill doesn't really make me think of music, but now I do think about it, it has some awesome tracks =D
