I've beaten the nes version without cheats, warps, or save states, though I did make save states just before several points where I knew I'd have to practice, and being able to reload state made it far less tedious than having to go back to the beginning of the game and get there again to practice more. I did, however, put it all together for one continuous state-free run of the game. Very hard though.
Yes. People have destroyed this game hard. Especially recently, speed runners have kinda made this game their bitch.
This song is outrageously catchy.
I haven't even beaten this game with cheats. When I finally got to the Dark Tower I could not put in the time anymore to memorize and beat that last level.

Nice pick :) I prefer the NES version (though I'd likely prefer this version if i'd encountered it first all the same). One day i WILL beat this game on the NES, but I dunno..the Rat Race is arguably the most ridiculous level ever.
This music version of surf city is better but you cant beat the (8 bit) Nes version, NIntendo doesnt need 16 bit to accomplish perfection in 1991.... @_@
genesis / megadrive version is my favourite...but damn, this game is the hardest i've ever playd!!! i beat it with my friend and i needed so much hours (i playd it on wii with safe option) but it was still very hard because of the 2 player mode. i wanna see the 2 player who can beat this game without saving ^^

Good point. Well, what can I say? I called it a port for nearly five years, and old habbits die hard...
You can call it a "sequel-remake" of sorts. IT mimics a lot of things of the original game but it's still a new installment taking place after that one, a not the "same game being ported". Think about of Gunstar Future Heroes compared with the original Gunstar Heroes. Or think about what Metal Gear Solid 2 does compared with Metal Gear Solid. Different games that should be considered as separate titles, despite their similarities.
Well, I always thought it was the same, but I only found out receantly that it's WAY different. (NES had 13 stages, SNES had only 7, and that's just the begining!) But still, I like to think it's a port. A port with a lot of things different, but a port nontheless.
The "SNES version" you mean is a completely different game I'm afraid.
The Sega version of Battletoads is supposedly easier than the NES version.
Personally I think the NES version is better.

I remember this game! Loved it! Mad hard. I didn't die, but only because I played with my cousin who had played and died so many times it's uncountable. Truly the most difficult game ever.

I mostly played the NES version as a kid but I always played the Genesis version with a friend. David Wise (Donkey Kong Country series) composed for this game, if you didn't already know. :P
