I don't want to sound to like a troll, but personally I didn't like Lost Odyssey very much despite being a huge JRPG fan. I didn't like the characters both for character design and their personalities (Kaim's kids were especially annoying to me), the music was so-so (at least by Uematsu standards) and the gameplay wasn't exciting either. I don't think it's a bad game, but the reputation of being the best JRPG of that generation is heavily overblown, in my opinion. On a side note, I do like this track though.

Same, actually. The best way I can describe it is that it does nothing wrong, but does nothing right at the same time. Everything from character designs, to world building, to the battle system, were all solid, but just so unremarkable. A shame really, I had hopes that it would be its generations "Rogue Galaxy" in terms of being a hidden gem.

Imagine what would have happened if Hironobu Sakaguchi, Nobuo Uematsu and the rest of former Square people that formed Mistwalker, had stuck around for Final Fantasy XIII? It would have probably been like this. I think their awesomeness was channeled into this game. I know that people left the company for one reason or another, but imagine what FFXIII could have been like if the people that helped create the series were able to have some input on what is considered to be the worst game in the main numbered Final Fantasy games.
Nobuo Uematsu sometimes still makes music for the FF series. He's just not the main composer but he does compose some jingles and sounds here or there. Such as the tube that plays at the character select scene of FF14. But yea, it would've been a lot different if they stuck around.
I hope Hironobu さん 、Nobue さん、Yoshinori さん、Kazushige さん、Tetsuya さん and the rest of the crew forms another company to make games. That will be the ultimate reunion.

Yeah Blue Dragon is a very good game, I can't recommend it enough:) It's very similar to Lost Odyssey because it's made by the same company, they're both turn based RPGs, Lost Odyssey has a ring system while in Blue Dragon they summon their shadows that take the form of a mythological being that gives them extra skills. Both games have a beautiful soundtrack composed by Nobuo Uematsu:D I found the story very good but don't expect a mature, dark story and atmosphere like in Lost Odyssey. While Blue Dragon can have its dark moments too it's a light hearted story with beautiful artwork by Akira:) Sorry if it was too long but I really love Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon.
@Turkish- Sensei I 100%'d both games back in the day both games are fantastic but Lost Odyssey was more epic. But I cannot say no to Akira Toriama's iconic anime style for Blue Dragon, I just love his style so much heck I love even Dragon Quest/Warior just for the art style.

I felt it as a huge kick in the balls to see a great JRPG, one of the last specimens that remains in modern times, and one directed by Sakaguchi himself, no less, be in a system that had practically nothing for JRPG fans. I'm pretty sure you're not the only one who had to get a 360 just for this game. >:/
@Andrés Cifuentes At least that mistake won't be made this gen because lots of JRPG are announced for the ps4( I know that most of them have a ps3 or psvita port) So yeah I have practically no reason to buy a Xbox one. I wish Mistwalker would make a game for the ps4.
@Turkish- Sensei What's made me happy of late is seeing more japanese games making it to the PC. Playing Valkyria Chronicles on PC made me a pretty happy dude. Hopefully more japanese games and maybe some good JRPGs follow that trend. I'm kinda tired of the console war nonsense, and of house consoles in general, plus, my PC from several years ago already beats the PS4 in every way. :/

Indeed, it's such a shame that this game got overlooked because "it's old style and turn-based": it was a time where turn-based games were all ignored because considered "old and ancient", and yet Persona 5 proved us how Turn based JRPGs can still kick ass no matter what. PS: I also know this game got ignored because released on xbox too.

@janusan89 The Xbox 360 exclusivity is what killed it. Like, don't get me wrong, I love my Xbox 360. But it was NOT a JRPG console. At all. If it had released on PS3, I can almost guarantee it would've sold very well.
@BrokenMoonStudios I think you're right on that one: I had an xbox but I barely played it and despite owning vesperia and this (and eternal sonata) I didn't see too many other games on it, which is a shame. However I do mean it when I say that back then turn style rpgs were suddenly becoming "too old" for some reason and this made most devs shift their games into a mix of turn-based and action that MANY TIMES wouldn't work (Ni no Kuni, White Knight Chronicles, Final Fantasy 13 and Eternal Sonata comes to mind). If you have a goddamn bar to wait before attacking it's NOT action: it's turn-based disguised as action (at least in my opinion) I'm just glad that those horrible hybrids are now over and we get proper action rpgs (ys, tales or Shining resonance) or proper turn-based rpgs (persona, digimon cybersleuth)

Lost Odyssey is one of the best JRPG's I've ever played, and this is my favorite track. It kind of has that old style drama to it, like an old anime like Starzinger or DBZ. My favorite feature of this game though is that the characters are designed by Takehiko Inoue, author of Vagabond and one of my favorite artists!
Nobuo Uematsu has made games like this into masterpieces for music, just like he did to some of the Final Fantasy sound tracks.

FF7 was okay, but hardly what I'd call "setting the bar". It was 3D, that was IT. That's all everybody raved about. Not the spikey-haired emo guy, not the effeminate bad guy with long silver hair, just that it was in 3D. FF6 had a better story, better characters, and even today still looks better despite being 2D.
Nope, FF7 was and still is one of the greatest JRPG's to date. It set the bar in graphics, style, music and as far as I'm concerned, story. That's not to say that all other games were no good before or after FF7, just that it was a new take on what an RPG could be, on how to tell stories and a fantastic world without the traditional fantasy settings. If you don't agree, that's fine, but to me you kind of sound like you're just trolling. Cloud was, and still is, one of the greatest heroes of our age, and emo is taking it quite a bit too far, I think. I've played and replayed it, and I don't think he's all that emo, not if you look at the whole picture. Sure, he's whiny in the beginning with all the "pay me"-stuff, but I don't think we'd be calling you an emo if your only true rolemodel turned his back on you, killed everyone you know and love and then went on a killingspree with the ultimate goal of destroying the entire planet. I think we'd be calling you one tough SoB for just being sad and angry, being able to interact with people at all. There's a difference between being emo and actually being hurt, IMO.
@Pinkaugust I actually prefer FF6....but FF7 had really great moments too. FF7 had a lot of questions that a) were left open to interpretation or b) had answers that were very subtle. That's why it's such a talked about game. That and the fact that it was such a huge leap at the time in terms of graphics. In terms of music, however, FF6 has some of Uematsu's best work. He named it as his favorite OST when asked. Lost Odyssey's music comes pretty close though, IMO.
@Pinkaugust Exactly. Some people gain a false feeling of self-importance just because they're with the different crowd. The FFVI crowd is sometimes awfully pretentious. Those who like FFVII more don't go around insulting FFVI everywhere, and yes (to @InsanoRider777), I'm talking about those who have played both games.

+InsanoRider777 I absolutely agree. FF7 is FAR from being the best game in the series as fanboys still claim to this day. It's character cast was nothing special (except for Cid, he was awesome in 7), FUCK Yuffie, FUCK Cait, FUCK that useless walking pair of boobs that was only of use near the end to make the worst fucking character in the game, that incredibly emo asshole (because, yes, he was an asshole towards everyone but Aerith for a large portion of the game) get a freaking grip. Also, FUCK FORT CONDOR. And, Aerith's death is overrated as hell. Galuf did it best, and he did it years before.

VI had a much darker and somber tone in comparison to VII. The cast of characters were far more memorable IMO. The scene with Celes after the world of ruin initiates is so emotionally impacting. Every character is just so driven by what they have been through. Even Gau has a bit of a somber story... There's an optional quest involving him recollecting memories of his father. His theme plays as he finally meets his father. The feels man! Lol.

If you believe final fantasy 13 is a good game, then i feel sorry for you. IOne thing i can say Graphically final fantasy continues to grow. But thats where it all ends. Final fantasy is a husk its former self, the only thing i can say about final fantasy these days is, DISAPPOINTING! Its not good enough, but poeple's standard in quality have gone down alot. As long as the graphics are nice, that all people care about these days. Final Fantasy 13 wishes it could be half as good as Xenoblade.

My absolute favorite uematsu boss battle score. This whole soundtrack is great. Its a shame sakaguchi rejected all of Uematsus intial pieces for the last story because he wanted something "different". We could have had another games worth of epic Uematsu

It's very good. It does have alot of issues in its gameplay, but the story in that game is so amazing, it actually blows Lost Odyssey's story out of the water, in my opinion. Definitly give it a shot whenever you get the chance, it's a great game.

yeah, tbh Squeenix has thoroughly disappointed me ever since FF10-2. (I'm actually semi-alright with the first FF10) FF13 is just part of the pop-induced gloss-fest they've got going. Pop is only ok if distributed evenly. So when I discovered Lost Odyssey, this was like a godsend for me. I have to say though... FF15 actually looks promising. I hope I'm not wrong about it and it doesn't suddenly become another chick-flick--like everything succeeding Square and Enix's merger has turned out to be.

What he described was more like a mix of Tidus and like, Hope. Especially the "THIS IS MY STORY" part, which Tidus says over and over again, despite FFX being about Yuna. Tidus also whines a ton, while never going straight into "emo" territory. Also, Squall was nothing like that. And all of the times he was frustrated it was in his head. He didn't usually vocalize how much things pissed him off, and just kept doing what needed to be done. Which is why Squall is just cold, rather than emo/whiny.

I agree, though there are some FF main characters that don't seem to be broody because they don't have much of a reason to be, like Zidane, Tidus, and Terra. And Cloud of course is put down for what you are describing, but personally thanks to playing Crisis Core I do think he has a reason for being the way he is. Squall on the other hand is the perfect example of what you're describing, can't stand him because of that. But yes, I do agree with you, one of the many reasons this is one of my favs
See I love this game far more than any final fantasy because the hero has a legitimate reason for why he's as sad and brooding as he is. He's lived a thousand years and seen countless deaths, lost people he cared about and had his life ripped apart by a former comrade. It seems to carry a lot more weight than "my life sucks, boohoo, gotta save the world, this is MY story", etc. that so many FF chars seem to whine about.

Yeah, exactly. I agree that the technical issues lie in the poor choice of console, and that's not really the game's fault. With a different console and more special moves added, the gameplay would be perfect. Spamming gale slash and diffusing magic circles was fun, but only for a while. I was also disappointed with the complete lack of character customization, though. Overall, though, I personally found TLS's story and characters more engaging, but still, LO is still strong there, too.
Agreed that TLS had some technical problems. As you mentioned, the game had some frame rate/lag issues but I kind of attribute much of that to the power of the Wii. I wouldn't mind a little more polish to the battle system myself. It offered plenty of different elements(stealth, first person, command, gathering, etc) but adding more specials, attack moves, and/or magic spells would be a nice touch. Overall though, gotta say I had a blast and enjoyed every battle vs wanting to run at times in LO.
I agree that the story/characters in LO were great, but I preferred them in TLS. I don't know why, but I found them more engaging and the story more worthwhile, in my opinion, but Lost Odyssey was still great in that department. However, I am sorry to say, but I personally did not care for the combat in TLS. It was unique and fun at times, but there are a lot of graphical and presentational issues (Lag, framerate drops, etc), as well as bizarre control schemes. This is just my opinion, though.
I prefer Lost Odyssey. It was just simply more memorable and epic, especially in the story/characters/music department...but if you're talking about the fun factor, TLS was unique and probably the most fun JRPG I've ever played. Combat was extremely addicting and I liked how non-tedious the game was compared to your typical JRPG. LO=9.7/10, TLS=9.3/10. Both are great games though, really. Gonna have to play Blue Dragon too now. Yay, Mistwalker!

If only Sakaguchi and Co. had access to the newer version of the Unreal Engine (used in the newer games) maybe this would have overcome its graphical issues. But the game itself is fantastic and the storyline is better than most of the RPGs in this generation.

So true, you seem to be one of the few with enough sense to like both games for what they do.and though everyone complains constantly about XIII's linearity, when i look back at RPG's there was never any reason to explore an area more than once save for needless sidequests that added nothing to the story and a handful of side bosses. I mean the option of an open world is nice but the way XIII progressed never made me really need one.

This theme reminds me of a train in the way that there is constant, yet, subtle brass in the back; like a pistons going up and down in an engine.
Yes, the soundtrack is very nice. It's different from what you would hear in FF, yet it still carries some resemblance to it, and of course, Nobuo's special touch. My favorite in the soundrack is Yosolo and Neverending Journey :)
Both. It's more similar to the older FF games in both how it plays and how great of a game it is. Of course, the fact that Sakaguchi, Uetmatsu, and other old Square Soft members were involved with this game is a huge factor as well. I also own this game's soundtrack. I feel it's one of Uematsu's strongest. The music is just as soulful and emotional as the game itself.

A yes the boss with the 3 tank one charge the main Cannon and the other Charge the Wheel... The Wheel attack break all your barrier and the Main Cannon wipe all your mage... XD

Lost Odyssey is amazing. It has a very down-to-earth story, great characters, and one of the best soundtracks I've heard in a long time. If you're a huge FF fan, definitely give it a shot because it's more Final Fantasy than anything titled that this gen.
The only downside to being a Mistwalker/Sakaguchi fan is that they jump console a lot. Luckily, I own all three major consoles.
I've played XIII and I haven't played this. Went over to a friend's house one day to check it out while he was working on a boss, and was sold in ten seconds. I'm GETTING a 360 for this game. SOLELY for this game. Why? Because somehow this is where "Final Fantasy" actually went. Forget the title, the awesomeness is here.
I have Xenoblade and am about 7-8 hours into the game. While I loved every moment of Lost Odyssey, I'm having some trouble trying to stay interested in the other. Different tastes for different people, I guess. There's so much heart and sentiment in LO that it makes Xenoblade feel a little, for the lack of a better term, dry in comparison. Sure, you can do a lot more exploring Xeno...but overwhelming exploration doesn't necessarily make for a better game.
Why do people compare it to FF-13 it's not, just because it's better and turn based? don't compare it to a crap game( wait isn't that how you compare things idk).
I couldn't agree more with this sentiment, both games are great in their own way.
It's been a while since I finished this game, but when I listen to this song it feels as I'm playing it for the first time again.

OH SWEET CELESTIA it sounds like FF1 + FF2 boss themes. Id prefer that this one was FF13.
Lost Odyssey is made by Mistwalker, who also made the Final Fantasy series, so its no wonder that the music is a similar style and the gameplay too. Though I only played FF1,2,4,5,6,7 and 13, I can say out of all of them and Lost Odyssey, Lost Odyssey is my favourite, though 6 comes incredibly close.

@Guccikebab 12 was pretty decent as well wasn't a huge fan of the combat system. 10-2 was shit tbh. I even played 11 on PC (Shite!) lol

the whole game had a good story and a very interesting game play that is very new to RPG'S every where and 4 disk span sold me in seconds

@dondondokken it is better than 12 and 13 yes. the newer FF are by far crappier than the older ones. but this game is better than some of the other ffs, yes. i will agree with your friend on that. but theirs a few ff i had more fun playing than this one, just cause i was able to get into the storyline much more than this. imo 10, 9, or 4 would be a good choice if you plan to get into ff (imo at least). but a must would prob have to be 7 since its the game they are probably most famous for.

Ha ha, now I am definitely digging this, nice piece of music. I'm getting this game in a couple days, so I do look forward to checking this out. I especially like when the pitch changes and adds to the intensity of the fight. Uematsu has composed some great stuff, I feel he should eventually retire with dignity and take a nice, long well deserved vacation from it all in due time.

This song actually has the type of melodies Uematsu was composing during his Famicom days(Circa FFI-FFIII, particularly). It actually sounds a LOT like the style he used in FFII. Ultra retro late 80s/early 90s RPG-styled music with full orchestra treatment(or a damn good synth).
@Ninjaspyman You should hear some of Uematsu's older tunes. They had more of a Disney-feel. Particularly the final boss theme from FFII.

@Shoji91 That's the fight where your only front line fighter is the little boy, who was a mix melee/caster. Essentially not who you wanted to have to rely on for survivability. Its one of the harder fights in the game.
I loved this game, but I never beat it :( I could NEVER get passed this part where I was on a train or something, and was fighting some... ice guy, I can't remember, it was so long ago. But I basically had to play as the 4 people I didn't level up or anything, and that was freaking annoying.
@nubergutin As far as I'm concerned this was Final Fantasy X, The Last Story is set to be XI. Square-Enix dropped the ball years ago.

@brainjuice654 This game didn't sell well. The gameplay is tedious. And the pacing is bad. Kaim's amnesia was revealed so prematurely that the story was laid bare 10 hours into the gameplay. But the real travesty was the gameplay. It was absolutely repetetive. And the mage characters who wore staffs: there was no point in even upgrading their weapon. Look at shin megami tensei games for how "traditional" style battles can be fun.
@IdeonFukkatsu traditional battle systems are the best and always will be and vocals don't count as ost for all i care at least it doesn't have leona lewis >.< ff13 is one of the worst rpg's of this generation with it's long and repetitive bosses it's stupid compact commands. seriously i have more fun playing final fantasy 2 than 13 because it has way more character customization and it's the total opposite of linear and the classic turned based battle system. the atb bar idea in 13 sucked.
@brainjuice654 The combat system is archaic here. They just copied last remnant's trigger hit sequence. They used unreal engine for christ's sake. The beginning of Lost Odyssey looks phenomenal, but once you clear that there's all kinds of graphical errors all through the game. Not that it isn't a great game; but it was rushed and it's obvious. Also Sheena Easton's song ruined any chance this game had at getting 10/10 score for ost.

@Nanertot Because it isn't Final Fantasy, doesn't have any Final Fantasy elements in it that don't just classify as generic RPG elements, and because Final Fantasy was a Squaresoft/Square-Enix game, to name a few reasons.
@Broshmosh Lost odyssey was super rushed, they made use of the unreal engine instead of writing their own, and as a result, we suffered the ring system which is a tired combat mechanic that has become very cliche. I am NOT saying it's a bad game by any means, but the gameplay hurt badly compared to FF13 which was a lot more fun imo. Best part of lost odyssey was 1000 years of dreams.

This game was the reason i bought a 360. And while it was good, the gameplay hurt, it was probably...6/10 at best. And while the previews look good, the unreal graphic engine really failed at some parts of this game. While a good game, I think ff13, Valkyria Chronicles, Resonance of Fate are superior -- Even if LO's OST beats them out, it's gameplay isn't that much fun, sadly.

This game was really good. But I couldn't finish it. It wasn't too hard. It wasn't boring. I didn't get stuck on a puzzle. The battles were WAY too long. I mean, the fights weren't bad, but seriously, the showing of the surroundings every single time got SO annoying, and eventually, I quit because of them. =/

@MEGAGUY21 If you mean the ostinato: Jaws is a minor second (half-tone), while this has a minor third (three half-tones).
Despite the amazing orchestra work, this sounds totally old school. You can easily translate this into a 16- or 8-bit soundtrack in your mind. Given the nature of the game, I bet this was totally intentional. Awesome, as always, Nobuo Uematsu.

@bo49107 Well, I don't think that'd happen. Sakaguchi and Uematsu are both pretty disillusioned with Sony's underhanded business practices. As Uematsu once said, he'd prefer to be in the business of making dreams, as opposed to making money.
@RocmanRaz So I have them to blame for messing up Zeromus' theme. They did good with every other track, but man, it moves at a snails pace compared to the SNES or GBA versions.

i;ve owned this game from the day it was launched. there was no need to be so insulting. i was merely stating my personal opinion. when i compare this boss theme to other works Nobuo Uematsu it ( to me) really DOES lack the since of urgency that would normally be found in his other works, i'm not saying it's entirely absent. there was no need to be so insulting.
Oh and not only does this music scream urgency, It's not the only boss theme in the game. It's used for maybe 1/3 of the boss battles in the game. You'd know this had you actually played the game which apparently, you havent making your opinion all the more invalid and even more so ignorant. Congrats dipshit.

personally i think this soundtrack lacks a sense of urgancy and impending danger that most boss fights have. i would have chosen this track for a mini boss fight maybe and even then it's still a bit lacking in boss battle matreal. that's not to say howeverthe music itself isn't good. it's EVERYTHING i've come to expect form Nobuo Uematsu pure greatness:D

I'm confused with this comment, even the one I posted. I remember doing it but when I wrote that I was thinking of final fantasy 7, not the game in this specific video. na they released a psone classics on the playstation store which is just the old game in its entirety but i think with the ability to use the xmb
Nothing, in fact the cinematics were great for a playstation, but I just wasn't too immersed into the story, but I did just love all the things you do in the game..like chocobo breeding. Best thing ever.
I don't know if you know, but this music was composed by the same guy that composed final fantasy 1-9 music. (and some of 10 too). for me the best one is FFIX (in music)

I wasn't expecting much from the game when I got it, but damn, this game made me love the RPG genre so much more than I already did. Why can't all final fantasys have music like this. The only final fantasy that I feel has a deep story with awesome music is 10.

I hear string instruments are really hard to play (there's no marks on a violin to tell you where your fingers need to be to get certain note from the strings; you just have to know) and they aren't as popular. Some schools have string ensembles, but not many. As far as I know. Also, there probably aren't many pieces for high school bands that have wind and string parts. :/
