This was a fantastic game despite what some people say. I would almost call this peak classic Castlevania before SOTN changed up the formula.

Konami should remake this game for 3DS and PSvita, fixing all the flaws it has: *Play the full game on easy mode instead of just playing a half of it. *Remove the nitro and mandragora part or making it less frustrating *More items to use in the inventory *More comfortable saving points. *Better camera angles. *More bosses and levels. *More comfortable whip controls (maybe locking the enemy by pressing L or R like Legend of Zelda). *Replace the motorcycles by zombie horses and the chainsaw by an axe (is the mid XIX century). If that happens, surely this game would end up becoming a masterpiece.

Hey Nintendo! You know how Sony payed Konami to make Castlevania Requiem a PS4 exclusive? You should do the same for a remaster of this game! Have them upscale the graphics, revamp the controls and the camera (especially the camera) and make it a Switch exclusive! It's pretty obvious that Konami no longer cares about Castlevania, so that's the only way it's gonna happen.

Such a great idea. Just as the player reaches castle CENTER, they hear a rearrangement of the main menu theme. It puts into perspective how far the player has come, but in a sense signifies that things are just getting started.

This was the first Castlevania I owned and I remember feeling so good completing stage 4 or 5 on Easy, only for the game to end because you only got the first few stages on Easy, so I went through it on Normal, oh the Tower of Execution and Clockwork Tower, were not fun, still, I miss the game
Apparently a bunch of bad gamers never realized there was a WHOLE BUTTON dedicated to switching camera modes. The game doesn't suck. The game rocks. You suck. Not to mention all of those purists hate on Symphony and other Metroidvanias for being "Too easy" but then bitch and whine that the 64 games were too hard. Pu-lease.
Elitism just makes you sound like a snob, and the camera modes don't really ailviate some of the most horrid camera angles the game throws at you.
The first section (up to 0:33) gives me *major* Super Mario World castle vibes...

honestly one of the most underrated Castlevania games...i never got the hate, i really loved it, the atmosphere especially was creepy af. And the music really stayed with you long after you stopped playing.

@Tonya McLean yeah i agree! Cos it came out after Symphony of the Night, everyone wanted it to be like that. But i love how different it was. I mean it was the first time going 3D, but also had some pretty original things never done in CV before like the real time day/night system, multiple story paths and endings based on decisions, puzzle elements and a good story as well, I hope people can go back now and appreciate it
Catlevania 64 is better than Symphony of the Night by a long shot in my opinion. The atmosphere is just unique.

The little details and atmosphere made this game. Just in the beginning seeing Reinhardt Schneider crossing himself .... and then the thunderstorm the first battle... this game starts with all the magnificent!

Essa música tocava naquela tela do labirinto, que tinhas as salas com 4 portas e o chão no meio caía, aí você tinha que voltar tudo la pela plataforma no jarro. Acho que fiquei uma hora pra passar essa tela e tive que ficar escutando essa música o tempo todo.
In retrospect the controls were bad (I remember yelling out of pure anger falling off a disappearing platform for the 100th time) but I was a kid, I didn't care about trivial things like that! I loved this game, I loved its music, I loved its locations, I loved its atmosphere, I loved its cosmology, I still love it all! One of my favourite N64 titles!

Anyone else watch Cosmo's Speedruns for this? It's a pretty neat game when you're watching someone to whom the camera is hardly a worthy foe playing it.

Actually, it had this one, Silent Madness, Invisible Sorrow, Tower of Science, Tower of Sorcery, First Struggle, Castle Walls, the "Malus / Renon / Charlie" theme, Lamented Rose, Stairway to Clouds, Dancing in Phantasmatic Hell, Toothed Wheel, Dance of Illusions... and some other minors musics, like Hellhound 3, Spiderwoman, etc. NEVER trust entertainers.

@Otaku Lord8 Then congratulations. It changes nothing about how bad that part was designed (it's a blatant example of artificial difficulty. It strips away mobility and forces the player into a no hit run mode. Hardly a change of pace people felt was granted)
@Scissorman So? I fail to see your point. My guess is that you're simply impatient, though I had practice with the Nitro/Falling Platforms/Gears Segment of that game. In my opinion, people who have a hard time with the Lower Floor Nitro Segment need to Get Good.

this is the most underrated game of all time, I do not understand all the hatred that surrounds this game. I'm constantly debating with castlevania fanboy that their symphony of the night is not as great as they say and that castlevania 64 is an underrated masterpiece. I hope that some day a remake will born and all these haters will shut up when they will realize that Castlevania 64 is equally excellent than Symphony of the night.
Symphony of the night is one of the best games ever, IMO the best in the Castlevania saga, but the N64 was super enjoyable.
SOTN is a very good game, but for me it's not castlevania. It's a metroid. SOTN has almost nothing to do with castlevania.

I actually really enjoyed playing through this game and also Legacy of Darkness despite the aggravating camera angles and control issues. The music was fantastic and the adventure was fun!
@PeromyscusLeucopus I disagree. Rondo of Blood is too manga to bear the name of Castlevania. Castlevania is a series that should retain its gothic spirit and that's why I withdrew of the serie after the release of Circle of the moon until Lord of shadow, because when I saw it was going in a manga style / metroid / final fantasy, I told myself that it was not a good idea, so I stopped. But my favorite castlevania is: Super Castlevania 4
@killer7sam If you disregard the anime style intros and just look at the gameplay itself, you will see that the game incorporates everything from all the previous Castlevania games in a perfect manner. It has all the monsters, the main musical themes, the special weapons with added powerups plus adds a new one, but most importantly it keeps the feel of a classic Castlevania action game with the whip wielding gameplay. I'd say the only thing it is lacking is a secret option to play as Simon Belmont. ;-)
@PeromyscusLeucopus you're right, if rondo of blood had been the only one to be in this style I would have forgiven. But unfortunately (for me) they continued with this style with SOTN. I speak only of the graphic style and not the game itself because SOTN is an excellent game and ROB is a good game, too. But I would have preferred a style closer to SC IV.
Castlevania 64 is by any stretch of the imagination a very fun game. It's got some excellent music and some cool levels, but it is an inherently flawed game. Definitely underrated, and definitely better than what most people say about it, but I still wouldn't say it's anywhere near as good as SotN. And Symphony isn't even in my top five favorite Castlevania games. So while yes, I agree that Castlevania 64 is a very fun game, and not enough people give it credit for being a fun game, I simply can't agree that it's as good as SotN. It has too many little problems bogging it down. But I'm glad you enjoy the game! I actually find it really cool to know I'm not the only one who liked it, and that there are people who hold it in such high regard. Oh, and this is one of my favorite Castlevania songs, too.

@Reluctant Warrior I still think that 64 is way more flawed than SOTN. SOTN is very nearly flawless. It had a few issues, as basically any game would. I do think Super Castlevania IV has potential to be one of, if not -the- best in the series. I do typically prefer the IGA style games. Circle Of The Moon, Aria Of Sorrow, Dawn Of Sorrow, and all the rest are beyond excellent entries. But Castlevania IV is the only one I can say I'm still playing today, over and over again.
@SynthWaveFox0 Just as how Super Mario 64 is more flawed than Super Mario World and Zelda: Ocarina of Time is more flawed than A Link To The Past. The devs had to adapt to making 3D games, its not an easy task. But considering other attempts, Castlevania 64 was fairly successful at entering the third dimension. I do think SOTN is the weakest of the non-linear Castlevanias. Not a bad game by any means, but compared to the ones that came after(and even Simon's Quest for that matter) it just doesn't compare and is quite tedious(to the point of actually giving Simon's Quest a run for its money). Personally my personal favorite of the non-linear games would be a tie between Harmony Of Dissonance and Lords Of Shadow 2. But that's just my opinion.
@SynthWaveFox0 I can explain why I think that Castlevania SOTN cannot be the best Castlevania and has flaws that I find it incomprehensible that the fans did not complain more than that. First, the general design of the game, I do not appreciate this manga style, I think it doesn't stick to the atmosphere of castlevania. Second, why do alucard has NO frame of invincibility it's really annoying and SOTN is not the only one all other IGAvania have this very annoying problem. Then, the enemies That pushes you outside the screen is annoying, very annoying. but the worst is the selection of items in the inventory That is really the WORST in all the games I ever played. Finally, when I played SOTN I had the impression to deal with a sub-super metroid instead of a true castlevania. I think there was a way to make a metroidvania more faithful to the first games. It's not for nothing that I had not played any castlevania between circle of the moon and lords of shadow. I'm not saying SOTN is a bad game, but it has flaws and that it is not a masterpiece, it is just a very good game, that's all. Oh, and I apologize if I have mistakes because my first language is not English and I have to translate everything, so understand.

@Name Holder all right, let me compare castlevania 64 with the others castlevania 3D (lament of innocence and curse of darkness). Boring? For sure traverse some LONG empty corridors with no enemies is better? The atmosphere of castlevania 64 is the darkest and the most unique and it will always be better than making multiple copy and paste to the atmosphere of SOTN. Shit puzzles? In the game there must be I think 2 or 3 puzzles, and I'm trying to remember but there is absolutely ZERO puzzle in lament of innocence and curse of darkness. In addition, the puzzles of CV64 are very well thought out. The level design of Castlevania 64 is just great and is 1000 times better than your empty corridors. the controls are not bad at all, you must get used to and then you can really have fun and it's like that with ANY game on the planet. It is sure that when you're used to always play the same metroidvania with controls unchanged, necessarily IGAfanboy don't like it. Awful framerate? The game only slows when there is a lot of enemies on the screen (but this happens only in the first level) or when there is a lot of flames on screen. I agree the frame rate is not perfect but the game is perfectly playable. Looks ugly? the game is just beautiful and the art direction is a lot better than LOI and COD. And unlike the other castlevania you really feel to explore a HUGE castle. So to say such a thing you should probably hate the N64 or if not all the games from the N64 are ugly. Here, so before saying stupid things inform you a minimum and try to give him a second chance without your prejudices. You will be surprised that this game is really AWESOME and he's really underrated :).
@killer7sam Those are some perfectly legitimate reasons not to like the game. Personally, I never had those issues. I'm a big fan of the art style used in that game and I think it's a very well made game in general. You do make a good point about the selection of items. It had a pretty terrible selection. I can see why you might not have enjoyed it as much as the other games. I'm curious to know, by the way, did you enjoy Lords of Shadow? It was a pretty big departure from the IGA style of games. I actually thought Lords of Shadow reminded me a lot of Castlevania 64, so I'm curious to know whether or not you liked it.

+killer7sam I don't think SotN is overrated, but I do think C64 was an awesome game. Its too bad it wasn't as popular. I remember most people complained about the controls and the character's mobility, they seemed fine to me, and I remember enjoyed this game too much. Oh well. Ironically, this is the only 3D castlevania that I've ever liked. CastleGodOfWar for 360/PS3 might have been fun for some, but not for me.

@killer7sam Its a pretty good game in my opinion, certainly better than Castlevania:The Adventure. Just do not choose the "Lite mode" option when you play it, otherwise the game will be much too easy.
+Reluctant Warrior I finished it yesterday in standard mode and it is really great, I love the music. I had read reviews that said this game is bad but I find that this is not the case at all, another underrated Castlevania. However, it's a very expensive game I spent $ 85 for get it.

+MauriceTimeofWar It's not as good as Belmont's Revenge, but certainly better than The Adventure (which is not hard, since CVA is a horrible mess). Overall, it's an average game, not exceptionally good, nor exceptionally bad, IMO. I don't have issues with it being removed from the timeline. It was a mediocre story, which was quite weak for a start of legendary feud between Dracula and Belmont clan. Dracula was never given proper introduction in it, he is just already there and that's it. On other hand, story of Lament of Innocence is a full scale dramatic nonsense. It has its good moments and I liked voice acting, but generally it's just typical IGA's run-of-the-mill story (one friend betrays another, an idea, which is present almost in all his games, though arguably the first game, which utilized this plot was KCEK's Legacy of Darkness). So, both origins are quite bad, for their own reasons. Legends is too low-key and LOI feels boring.
+ShadowSumac I am partially agree, of course Legends can not be enough in itself to tell the origins of the series. But this is not a sufficient reason to remove it, Igarashi could have very well make his Lament of innocence without removing Legends from the timeline. Besides, Lament of Innocence was a huge disappointment for me. I'm not satisfied with the answers provided to the questions that I asked myself. I prefer the origins told in Lords of Shadow rather than Lament of Innocence.
1000% Agreed. This is the first 3D Castlevania and the sountrack, mechanics, atmosphere and every sound FX are so marvellous... with a masterful main menu and the first impression with that giant skeleton boss is so great! IDK... but the little details of this game make it the best 3D Castlevania and one game who every gamer must play. On the topic of the classic Castlevania - Castlevania IV and X are the best in that order- The metroidvania i appreciate on the other ways. Also great games but are another cathegory.

The reason it got a bad wrap was because it came out in such a progressive time, and during the actual release it was rated quite highly. It was around 5 or so years after it's release where it was continually being discovered by Castlevania fans where it continued to get looked down upon because it's not like other castlevania games, and 2, people don't take into account that FOR ITS TIME, it was put together nicely.

As much as the N64 Castlevanias are flawed and hated, I had a LOT of fun with them and I find them to be the most atmospheric 3D entries in the series to date. I really felt the kind of oppressive and desolate feeling I wanted to get from the games. They remind me of Super Castlevania 4 in the way the setting and ambiance immerses you. Lament of Innocence was such a boring, formulaic and joyless game I can barely believe I brought myself to finish it.

The N64 castlevanias were and always be my favorite ones, sure 75% of the bosses were easy but the levels even to this day confuse me and the final boss fight is still a challenge.Konami really screwed up when they sold their contract to Ubisoft or whatever it is this year & last years Lords of shadows really threw me off the famous Dracula hunt now we apperently hunt the Devil & Death.
I actually think this was a very good game, terrible camera aside anyways.

It would've been perfect if the lock-feature made you strafe like in the 64 zelda games. That's the one thing I wouldn't have minded them ripping off shamelessly. As it is whenever you want to dodge you have to come to a complete stop first and then press the analog stick in time with the jump button, which is plain unreliable. It also doesn't help that you can only lock-on in battle mode, and sometimes the game will automatically switch to action mode instead. I wouldn't be surprised if many people didn't even know there as a lock-on system at all.

Konami's first attempt at a 3d castlevania failed epicly....but then when they came out with Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness....they more than made up for it. Matter of fact, Curse of Darkness is the best 3D castlevania, and one of the best castlevanias. of course, the music never stopped being awesome

@Burkhart von Klitzing In fact, N64 versions are 3D for the classic lineal, crazy platforms jumps and boss battles with your favorite extra weapon and abilities. The ps2 versions are try to add the "metroidvania" elements with crazy menus.

well, what I meant was, a next next gen Castlevania game, where Cornell was ONE of the playable characters/storylines, others would include AT LEAST one Belmont, Alucard, and there should probably be a new, non-lineaged character for newcomers. I never wanted them to make a game where it was just Cornell again, they've done that, it's time for them to do something new, but it has to actually be GOOD this time. (you know what recent Castlevania game I'm talking about, we all do.)

I thoroughly enjoyed this game for the balance of horror and since of culture each new level presented, critics may have hated this game, but it's true fans resonate with a since of respect for this game...I just wish I could play it again...

@SparkBlazetail Well..they do sort of reuse the songs over and over. I mean, the intro is a variation of Richters theme, after all. And how many games have Bloody Tears in it? So...yeah, it would sound similar.

I remember my Ma an' Dadda playin' this game when I was about 6 or 7~ X3 I LOVE that the girl has a better ending than the guy does~ XD You fight one lame battle with Dracula, with the guy, and you fight 3 forms with the girl~!!! My cousin had to help out on the final boss, but I missed it 'cause I was in my room jumping off my bunk-bed into my huge pile of stuffed animals~ XD

You only have this song from Castlevania 64?! It has a LOT of great songs! The eeriness of the Villa is showcased perfectly in the music, and the Tower of Sorcery?! Come on!!! P.S. I remember the part with Carrie and the nitro thing...When I had to walk down some stairs and I always died in the final step...supposedly when I stepped down the last one, there was movement so yeah. Stupid game and its glitches XD.
I used to get to a safe area in this level and stay there to listen to the music.

All games have there problems. If this was remade, all the music and everything in it, this game would surely be even more epic. One of the best N64 games I played as a kid.

Dude the game is killer. The only thing problem you may encounter is the shoty camera work and the flunky controls but thats it this game is excellant
This game is pretty good. A fun game worth playing through. Not as classic as the earlier Castlevanias but way better than the other garbage 3D Castlevanias. The atmosphere in this game is just so omnious...fog, vampires, blood, creepy music....feels like a horror story, you are trapped in this Castle of terror. A lone man out to kill Dracula, will you survive?

I never played this game, but I remember I saw it a long time ago at Blockbuster videos where you could rent N64, and Playstation, and Dreamcast games there. When I saw it, I thought," Wo that looks awesome." Is this game even good? I saw AVGN's Castlevania marathon and he showed this game and it looked awful. But is this game good?

This game was pretty ass when compared to symphony of the night. I remember getting so pumped back in the day, then it ended up being some ass 3D platformer with mud ass graphics. not even made by Konami Japan, Konami Korea if I remember right?? Intro music its simply amazing though :)

I don't know, I liked the 3d gameplay. While it wasn't as fun as SCV (IV), I still had fun.
This game massively sucked save only for the music. Anyone who got far enough to recognize this music knows what I mean.
I share the same opinion as you but believe it or not there're people that actually like DK64. Maybe they didn't play the ones on the SNES but to each his/her own.
It was sort of boring and adding weirdo platform jumps didn't help in the fun factor either. It just didn't capture that same magic Super Castlevania IV had. Sort of like how Donkey Kong 64 could never measure up to the SNES Donkey Kong Country games.
I don't get why this game got such a bad rap... the only thing I would think it would be is the controls but I thought it was a fantastic game. I even bought Legacy of Darkness as well (which is the same thing pretty much but with a new level and two different characters)
Assuming you meant WHAT ABOUT Castlevania 64 I liked so much.. Challenging without being unfairly hard. On top of just plain gorgeous.
One problem with this game was the lack of music, of course it has some but not all levels have some. Overall i did enjoy this game.

Most people don't like this game. It's credited as the worst game in the series next to Haunted Castle for having bad graphics, a terrible camera, and lack-luster music compared to the other Castlevanias.
YAAAAAAAAAY one of my favorites. Possibly my single favorite Castlevania.
I've always thought the atmosphere, tempo, and even music were different than the usual games in the series. It all helps to create an interesting tale in the chronology of Castlevania, at least.

It's unironically a good game. It still feels like the most natural transition to 3D for Castlevania. All the classic elements are present and built upon.
It's a fucking great game, but Legacy of Darkness (basically an updated version) is an absolute masterpiece, one of the best games ever made. I have a theory as to why it has so many haters: It's the same as Nickelback, most people hate on it because everybody else does, when in reality they never even played it. As for the game itself, it may be different from its predecessors, but that does not mean it's bad. The atmosphere is incredible, the gameplay is solid (I never understood why people complain about the controls/camera, I didn't have any trouble with them even when I first played the game) the soundtrack is a masterpiece, the sound design is probably the best on the N64, the scenery/levels are very well designed and feel massive, the graphics are quite good for N64 and the story isn't anything special, but it's there, and has more depth to it and its characters than in most other Castlevania games. That said, there are some flaws. The one that bothers me is that the levels are laid out like an open/semi-open world game (how you can backtrack and all that) but the game is completely linear. If it was at least semi-linear, it probably would've been pretty interesting. Also, I find it a very easy game, even on the Hard difficulty, but that's probably because I beat it about 3 million times.
