Definitely the best jrpg ever made
Xenogears is the perfect ode of humanity, in so many ways, the better tale of what to expect if we reach a Kardashev 2 Level civilization. Which is very difficult. For instance the movie AD Astra is almost Kardashev 1 scale. Not even full Kardashev. We wont have characters project elemental magic, but we will certainly have advanced spaceships. The theme of religion is very present in the game. The Eldridge almost feels like a religious/ civilization carrying spaceship. At 100 kilometers long, it is an awesome idea to include in a story. Brilliant by all means... I wish I would have been there to work on Xenogears. I would love to contribute to such amazing stories. All it needs now is a sequel, a more scientifically accurate sequel. But this musical tone.... how can we ever thank Mr.Mitsuda enough? Great work on this theme..

Xenogears gameplay and graphics wise was sub-par even for its time. But let's be honest we're all here for the plot, wich is god-tier
my favorite song from the game. xenogears game was ahead of its time & still underrated. I know it won't ever happen but this game deserves a proper remake with tetsuya & everyone else that helped make xenogears on board. It would be dope to see episode 1-6 made how it was intended. If not a remake, I wouldn't mind a CGI movie.

Sometimes, in life, talent get wasted. It is time only that can allow people to appreciate a great work. So square enix, Why can't you undersand that these group of you team are considered to be the best team in your company. you should treat them well and give them best of the best oppurtunity to finish te game and produce high quality game without losing the original identity of the game. It's sad to see people who are the best in what they do gets ignored. while average people and not creative, will work on better game. I guess life is not fair.

I've never played this game but this song sounds very much like one I've heard from another game. Can't remember which game though. Maybe Chrono Trigger. Anyone else know what I mean and have an idea which song this sounds like? Either way, great song. Makes me want to play this one since I've heard good things about it

Yeah I found out later that it is the same composer. I think it has a similar sound and feel of his other works and I noticed the similarities and thought it was like another song of his that I've heard. Great song :)
@BigManTate7364 (Tate Lang) To me: "June Mermaid" is similar to "Dead Sea" from Chrono Cross, and Shebat is similar to Corridors of time and Schala Theme (from Trigger) for example.
Nico Montes I see what you mean. They do sound similar. I think he puts a distinct sound in all his music and I hear those similarities for sure.

For those that don't know. Xenogears was actually supposed to be FF7. They figured it was too far off from what FF was at that point. So, they just made it, it's own game. Cause FF7 and Xenogears game out really close to each other.

Seeing all these positive comments leads me to believe that perhaps, I should give this game a try. I definitely love the music from what I've heard. Yasunori Mitsuda composed the soundtrack, right? I love his work so much. I've come to find that a majority of my favorite game soundtracks have him involved in one way or another.

My 3 favourite jrpg's of all time. Not just Xenogears, we need a full 5-6-episode series, like it was originally intended to be... and shown in "Perfect Works".
Yeah it's sad that FF 7 is getting all the attention. Don't get me wrong, it's an excellent game and i'm glad that the remake is happening, but CC/FF8/Xenogears are superior in many aspects. The atmosphere of chrono cross, The very deep plot of Xenogears and the immersivity of FF8 are beyond any game created at the current time
As much as I'd love a full-fledged Xenogears remake, it's just not going to happen. Xenogears' IP is co-owned by Square Enix and MonolithSoft, which means that unless they team up for a collab project, it's not happening. It's why in World of Final Fantasy, Square had to name the very obvious portrayal of Fei's Weltall XG to avoid copyright infringement. A Xenosaga remake would be more likely, as long as Nintendo allows it, of course. It's a crying shame, too, because Xenogears is probably the best-written story I've ever seen from video games as a medium.
@Von Armen Although, the mech in World of FF is indeed the Xenogears version of Weltall, so calling it XG is not that wrong, also Xenoblade 2 revived the Zohar story and even had Square in the credits, so a remake nowadays is not that impossible.
Unfortunately due to licensing rights, it will not happen. But is a remake what we want? We desperately cling to the past. And for good reason! Many of us played this game during formative years in our lives. This piece of art has shaped us into who we are today, and we long to see the story told again. But it won’t, and if it will, you might not like it. Different director, scenario designer, writers, music composers, etc. All there to reinterpret the original work. Sure, Xenogears was fraught with problems, but it’s also the impact on each of our lives is real and tangible. Instead of asking for a remake, play the original again. Maybe play with a close friend or significant other. Maybe just sit and appreciate the fact that you were able to enjoy a timeless piece of art, flawed and stuck in time as it is. I’m so grateful that I was able to experience this piece of art and rich storytelling, which has, I believe, made an indelible mark on who I am as a human being.

@GAMMA XII FFVII Was still sick as Hell, even in comparison. The main difference, however, is that Xenogears was an underbudgeted, unfinished, semi-scrapped game that was STILL a masterpiece, whereas FFVII was the "BOOM BITCHES! Check out mah BLING!," in-your-face awesomesauce of its time, and a masterpiece.

@GAMMA XII I have no idea if I like FFVII because of the nostalgia factor or something, but I really only finished it like 5 years ago or so for the first time. Classed it among my top 2 games. Then played FF:Tactics, and goddammit that game is good, I placed it even higher. Then I played Chrono Cross, and I placed it even higher. And 2 (or 3?) years ago I played Xenogears for the first time... and it instantly became my favorite game of all time! And it's unfinished. I like FF8, a LOT, but I would take Xenogears over FF8 any day, so fuck you Square for over-prioritizing FF8 and completely leaving Xenogears on the side. (I don't know what it is with older games, but any new game I play isn't better than the old games I recently play. I started FFX as well recently and it's also a fucking masterpiece, no matter what people say beacuse of Tidus who cares. And it's not because of the nostalgia factor for me, I'm just playing them right now, didn't play them when I was a kid, still better story than most recent games I don't get it) My list right now is Xenogears>Chrono Cross>FF Tactis>FFVII,VI,X, Square games in general. So I would prioritize a Xenogears remake over ANYTHING. Simply by reading the first few sentences when the "book" part of CD2 began I saw SO MUCH potential. Like, I have a VERY APPROXIMATE memory of it starting along the lines of "We went through that factory. Mid-way we saw some rockets standing there and we questionned their purpose. Then we reached the end and launched the bio-[whatever it was]. Suddenly humans all over the planet started randomly turning into [those brown modified thingies]." And I was like "HOLD UP!!! You just skipped what could easily be more than an hour/an hour and a half of gaming in 4 sentences!!! No!!!!!!! What is happening!" You could imagine so much through all those texts written, that they couldn't program because Square didn't leave them the time and money (come on, all that because they decided to trust FFVIII (8) =\ Fuck you just for that Square) Anyway, so much potential... XG needs a remake Q.Q Too bad we probably won't have one, ever, because of rights over the game being completely discrete, or Square owning too much and the creators at Monolithe now owning nothing, or I don't even remember. Oh but to your comment saying FFVII is shit compared to XG, I still get a bigger nostalgia overdrive from FFVII's music than from XG's, and it's still a game with a great atmosphere and lovable characters, compared to XG having its INCREDIBLE story as a main asset (and since I love story more than anything, I obviously would place XG as n°1). Why am I ranting? I don't know. I'm just still amazed by the power all those old games have (I almost said "old Square games" but in the end the "Square" Square staff did more bad than good to XG xD [ok they gave the money so XG would've never existed without them, but if the making staff found another publisher/developer thingy whatever it's called then maybe......]) [Edit : By the way I don't even remember where I take these informations from, the fact that Square was only the publisher and the main staff aren't really the ones at Square who were working on the FFs and stuff... +Lucas Kazama The dumbass thing was to create all those stupid new characters in the FF7 project compilation. FF7 wasn't created to have a continuation in the first place. I won't even comment how horrible it seems the remake will be (or at the very least, completely different from the original game and closer to the compilation project), but I at least agree with the guy that created this thread about the fact that Xenogears is the only rpg that really deserves a remake. In general, I prefer when a company focus on creating new games instead seeking easy money with their past glories, but Xenogears is almost an unfinished game (FF8 fault, just the truth, and it wasn't for the best). This game really deserves to be remade.
The interesting part is that Xenogears is actually FF 7.In the end It was judged too dark by directors, so a new FF7 game has been made and because they didn't wanted to throw all the work for the old FF 7 to the trash, they named it Xenogears and released it as well. Conclusion : If FF 7 hasn't been judged too dark back then, We would have a Xenogears remake in development today.

Still.... it would have been a shame if he had adapted his idea and make a Xenogears fitting Squaresoft guidelines. It would have ended in a mash up of FF and Xenogears which honestly couldn't have been near legendary to the real Xenogears. Anyway , Tetsuya Takahashi was / is way to attach to his own vision and the " message " he wanted to give with the Xeno series , there was no way he would even go for the fame of producing a notorious name as FF if it would dilute his ideas. For that also he his such respectable men. I read a lot about him and the politics surrounding him from 1997 to 2005 .... i really like that guy.
If you speak about Xenogears , yea. We all know about CD2. Takahashi had to cramp the CD cause he was more attached to his message and ideas ( something he said often ) then the gameplay if he had to sacrifice something. He is part responsible for " dragging " for too long what was a side project to SquareSoft but in the end its the urge of having the whole producing team beginning the work on the next blockbuster FF8 that put the nail in the coffin for Xenogears.

@Kuonluw I can totally see where your coming from. This is just me, but I am a very story driven person. After a whole disk of going through dungeons and fighting enemies and going through towns and such, it was nice to just have a bit of a break and just get story-story-boss battle, story-story-boss and so on. It was just a nice change of pace, IMO.
On a gameplay standpoint, the second disk was a disaster. But the story was actually enhanced with the different pacing and the final chance to wander around the world at the very end. I grinded for 15 hours to save Elly before going within Deus. After beating the game, it took my heart which FF8 held previously. I grew up with FF8, so it should show just how amazing XG is to me. Replaying is of top priority as soon as I get my guides ready for a complete and perfect playthrough.
Graphics were so bad I could not make out what I talking to half the time. Only a fucking idiot would call Xenogears graphics "godly." The Jump button was one of the worst mechanics in RPG history. Only in Xenogears can you get into a battle mid jump. Again, you are a fucking idiot, and your objectivity is wrong on all accounts.
That's harsh, but also kinda true. Though the 2D character design is really good. That being said, its story is one of the best ones ever made. So deep, so much emotion.

I felt it was a bit rushed. You spend most of CD2 reading a story and playing the important parts. The narration changed it became more complex. Don't get me wrong, I loved how complex it became, I just wished we could've explored on our own like in CD1 for all of CD2, not just the end of it.
I thought Disk 2 was great, IMO.
All companies are about money, they just let you control a movie these days instead of playing through anything. Guess people like that better.

Actually, they kinda did. They rushed Xenogears CD2 to finish FFVIII in time. If FFVIII hadn't been in the way, Xenogears CD2 would've been way more awesome than what it is.

Whoa there man. I might like Xenogear's soundtrack, but you gotta accept Michiko Naruke's (composer of WIld Arm's) music in a different light. There are different inspirations behind each game.
I am playing through Wild Arms right now... I don't even know why I am giving games like it a chance when games like Xenogears and Chrono Cross (square) have music you can't even come close to matching...
The fact that Mario was the reason why jumping was added isn't really relevant. Regardless of the reasons behind it, jumping WAS implemented, and implemented well. It allowed the player to traverse multiple layers/floors in dungeons without having to climb a flight of stairs every time, among other things. It also made it easier to avoid battles (theoretically you could do the same in Chrono Trigger, but in practice not really because some enemies are almost impossible to avoid).
If it WASN'T Mario jumping would be pointless in that game. That game was designed with Mario in mind, that is why jumping was added. Xenogears wasn't designed with anything in mind, and platform jumping suffered.
I'll have to disagree, I thought it made the dungeon crawling more entertaining, not to mention the minigames, and I thought the jumping was generally well-done with some exceptions like those moving platforms leading to a chest in Rose Way.
Of course I have. The jumping was still pretty pointless in that game, and if it was any other character jumping wouldn't be implemented.
Just out of curiosity, have you played Mario RPG for snes? If you haven't, it might change your mind in respect to platform jumping in RPGs. As for the vid: great track. Haven't played this game yet, but hearing this makes me want to remedy that.

Gameplay was a water-downed input combo system, and the graphics were INSANELY hideous. I didn't even know what I was looking at half the time. Platform jumping shouldn't be in ANY RPG, especially those where you can get into a battle in mid jump. Please shut the fuck up, you don't know what you are talking about.

@BeingBadAtMaths It was VII that harmed Gears. Square took development money from Xenogears to finish VII leaving Xenogears with almost no money to finish the game with. Hence disc 2's book-like features. I consider Xenogears one of the best games ever made.

And they have the clear right to, because this game proves it's epicness which few games can do actually. There are many awesome games today, but let me tell you few of them can remain remembered that good and make it famous even after more than a decade! Such a classic...

Because really... if they're not kids, they're either fangirls/dead/housewives/DID or a puppet (Miang is a good villain, she manipulates everyone... but she just does everything a machine tells her to do, not what she wants to do), no matter how capable they actually are. It's kinda funny really because even Margie talks about it in the game : "Men are so selfish... (...) They treat women like we are weaklings".

@GTSreviewer And that's a bad thing? Personally I think it's better when the female characters in a game are more realisticly endowed. There's nothing wrong with women in games having big boobs, but really it's been done to death. I'm a guy and I'd rather see more women in games be realisticly sized then see them be so big they need a damn forklift just to move around. Same goes for women in real life too, in my mind, C is big enough, anymore is just overkill.

I don't really know about that but this is indeed a great game with (to me at least) a much darker and more mature plot than FF7. FF7 is somewhat kid-friendly while Xenosaga is at times very scary.

ive never played most of the games sd has showed us but no i wish i was born in like 70s so i could play all these old games and new games as well. i wish my dad would have let me get a syste earlyer in my life
This game has one of the best soundtracks EVER. This music fit perfectly with the Tower of Babel dungeon. I loved the whole idea of exploring a gigantic ancient ruin. The scale of it was amazing and this song only accented the whole thing.
I loved how this song would repeat endlessly on disc 2, with that pendant swinging back and forth while the story was told. It also made the never-ending Tower of Babel enjoyable - i'm sure i'd have hated that dungeon with a lesser BG track. What a game..
This game was not released in the Uk so i don;'t know the story line, plus we only got Xenosaga ep. 2. Though i love the music, i am hoping to do composition for game/anime in the future.
yeah you should play them now... but Winning Eleven rocks man, that game is to soccer games what FF VII is to RPGs
The best game that I've played in my life. Such a solid story, a lot of plot twists and cliffhangers, everything is justified and the music is marvelous.

Its sad that now I'm a huge RPG gamer, but back then I skipped all these wonderful games. All I had in my mind was GT, Crash Bandicoot and Winning Eleven :( I never played Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Suikoden games on PS1, Vagrant Story... not even FF VII (until recently when one of my friends gave me the game as a gift). In true sense, FFX was my first RPG that I finished till the end, and I was hooked afterwards.
I actually just beat it again the other day. It makes a little more sense now...
Hit the Wiki on the story, I got confused myself. Briefly both man and machine are needed to bring 'Deus' back to life, hence, humans are needed in the Gears. Fei's true power is Id, and Id is not controllable. Only when all three of Fei's personalities unite does Grahf want to take over Fei's body. Which he fails in doing so.
Really? So then tell me why is it that in this game, they have all this technology to do all this insane stuff, yet they still need humans for gears? And why doesn't Grahf just unleash Fei's true power himself? Now that's laughable.

Sure we will. All they have to do is remake it like they're doing with EVERY OTHER "Most Awesomest Game" these days. In fact, if they do it right...update the graphics..."finish" Disc 2 so it's more game then movie (they have the story already, and Disc 1 has the gameplay engine to use. Just take out the "story telling" parts and replace with actual dungeons and battles)... *drool* :-D
Xenogears is the TRUTH. After playing this game all other rpg's attempts at telling a story are laughable.
I miss this game. Oh my God. When will I be able to play games or rather a masterpiece like this again?

The whole Tower of Babel scenario in this is still one of my favorite moments in gaming, even ten years later. Mostly because of this track. Plus the surprise of learning what the Tower really is. Very creepy, very memorable!

One of the four songs I remember in this game hehe. My favorite amongst the game is a town theme, forgot the name exactly, I believe the one that is up in the sky.
Even though disc 2 kinda suck balls, for me it's the best RPG.

If you want an outstanding remix of this song mixed with Dazil's theme, I suggest you check out Star Salzman's Pillar of Salt, it's on OCRemix. I still don't know how he managed to insert arabic and hebrew vocals from biblical verses so well.
