Fun fact: up to this day, there are still people that think the guy issuing orders to his troops is a German who says something like 'Die Waffen, legt an!'. What they don't realize is that the developer already said years ago that he himself has no idea what the guy says and that when gamers came up with that theory, he just went along with it. ''Die Waffen, legt an'' is also not exactly a normally phrased military order. In reality, the commander issuing orders is using American English-sounding vowels, if it were 'Waffen' it should have a very different sounding ''ah'', harsher and further to the front of the mouth. And the final word ends in a ''ch'' consonant. What the man is likely saying is something like 'reform line, quick march'. Ah the good ol days, where graphics were Jack shit. But the scores and gameplay expirence set the game on a godlike lvl of gaming.

What's with that voice clip in the beginning? Pretty sure this wasn't in the game, Over all it sounds different from the game. And it does not sound better the way it is here...
It most certainly is there in the game. "DIE WAFFEN - LEGT AN!" which, I believe, roughly translates from german to "WEAPONS - AT THE READY!". The reason it sounds different is because this was taken from the official Red Alert OST CD so it's presented in the original 44 kHz stereo source quality. In the game (PC version at least), everything was downsampled to 22 kHz *mono* due to storage space and PC performance reasons of back then.

@thomasoring I agree. If there's one thing the C&C series is known for, it's NOT sticking to the same basic formula in practically every game. If there's another thing the series is known for, it's NOT making a shedful of cash with each new release. The majority of game developers stick to a winning formula. The really original games are what we call "classics" today, and it's easy to forget that they made up maybe 5% of the games of their time. And a lot of them had a shit-ton of sequels too.

It's easy to forget how badass the music was in C&C games. Best soundtrack in the RTS genre as far as I know.
Listen to the OST from KKND2 Krossfire. Its also really good or Warcraft II OST.

This was my favorite song when I played this game as a kid. It was my first PC Game, and I was like 10 years old. I don't remember it being this heavy. :)

Ahh....the only game that can be a bigger time waster than this is Civilization. I'd say at least half of my free time was put into Command and Conquer alone, and I wouldn't want to have it any other way.

I've never played a game more capable of messing with my perception of time before. I'd start a mission at 9pm, and next thing i know it's almost 3am and I'm just starting to wrap up the mission with a final tank rush..
