1, 2 and especially 3 are well worth playing, I kinda lost interest with 4 and the PSP game but perhaps I just need to give them another go.

Its amazing to me how differently people can see things. You worry more about gameplay than an amazing story, but for me, why else would you play an RPG except for an amazing story? I would worry more about gameplay when it comes to Action/Adventure games.
@DAWells1983 To me, any game's main focus should be gameplay. that's why it's a game. I appreciate it when the story is good, don't get me wrong, but if I am only looking for an amazing story then I have thousands of movies, TV shows and books that focus almost solely on the story.
Well, we'lI have to agree to disagree. To me, the story should always be the main focus. At least when it comes to RPG's. Im not looking for an amazing story in a fighting game. Game play should definitely be the focus there. For me, playing a really good RPG is no different that reading a good book. The only difference is that you play a part in the story because you guide your characters through the plot. Do you see what I mean? I mean, look at a game like Dragon Warrior 7. Game play is terrible, but quite possibly one of the best stories in any RPG that I've ever played. I take it by your Van Burace name that you are a fan of the first Wild Arms? Well, the game play in that wasn't anything special. Not by a long shot. But that story was epic.
@DAWells1983 Hm I think I get your way of thinking. I understand it, although I think I could never finish a game whose gameplay doesn't appeal to me. I got you when you said that it's like reading a book. As for the Wild Arms thing, I'm a huge fan of the series precisely because its gameplay is, at least for me, way more fun than your average RPG; you know, with all those little puzzles, character tools and everything XD and of course the music as well.
+DAWells1983 I agree with that, but I have to add one more criteria on top. For me, the way the story is told is what is most important. While gameplay comes into play it is not the most important, you are correct there. But without a good score the story will fall flat for me. I need the right emotions to emphasize certain parts of a story. This is basically what made me latch on to Wild Arms as much as I did when I was a kid. The story was awesome, the game looked awesome, gameplay was, well, it was an RPG. But the music was phenomenal! It drew me in and never let go. Still hasn't.

I tend to focus on both. Then again, I can't think of any RPG with an excellent story that doesn't also have great gameplay. Well, I suppose Xenogears and Xenosaga were a bit simplistic, but I enjoyed them anyways.
A game having an amazing story doesn't mean much if it doesn't play well, as you have to be able to want to be compelled to keep playing and a frustrating gameplay system can deter that. Stories are a top in thing in RPGs no doubt, but to act like the gameplay isn't important is naive.
The Etrian Odyssey games are all about gameplay, and they''re a turn based rpg. I mean, there's a story mode for the remakes, but I don't really care for that personally.
I personally wouldn't play a game for 50+ hours if I didn't like the gameplay no matter how good the story is, that's all.

Maaan this shit is dope, really love it.
I never completed this game because the grind got too annoying in the very later stages, but the music has always stood with me. It really sets the tone and adds as much to the world as the actual graphics. I might re-visit the game now that I'm much older and a lot more patient.

You should definitely play them, you can buy a few of them through playstation store, and the rest of them i found at Gamestop.

I never heard of the series before this, but the music and the art direction of the games make me want to play it so bad. It sounds like some of my favorite animes.

wild arms songs are realy awesome but they are like all copied from another song. the town theme in wild arms 1 is copied from for a fistful of dollars this song is copied from dust in the wind and another song is copied from the ecstasy of gold.
I''ve been trying to find a game series with a soundtrack that is more fascinating than the wild arms one. I'm still looking for it, and frankly I'm almost losing hope on it, which means this series has the best soundtrack I've ever heard.

@DarkDragonPower True....FF7 and FF12 were the best experiences I've ever had with a video game. I tried other games to get the same feeling but nothing even compares to the amount of greatest and moments I had with those two games. If only I could erase my mind so I could relive the experience....

@azulichigo that's a good point because in a game you also need your actions to speak but in a book the only thing that speaks are the words. Of course, that's just how people decide to write books so if you wanted you could write a book like a video game, movie, etc and it would convert pretty well.

@cleomagoolando I personally like a "killer story" as it gives a purpose for actually playing the game. Books are nice too, but converting a book into a game would be a bit awkward. The structure of a book vs a video game is very different.

Great song! And I looked back through the comments, and I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought "Dust in the Wind". XD Guess I'm not going crazy after all.
I haven't tried part 1 yet, but I have a copy of Alter Code F tucked away for a rainy day (or month). I don't really mind if the game is repetitive, as long as the puzzles get harder and the gameplay is pretty solid. I actually don't like it when an RPG tries to be some major set-piece production like Final Fantasy X. If I want an amazing story, I'll just read a book. WA3's dungeons and world reminded me of the great Zelda games for SNES/GBA. No killer story but great unbroken gameplay.
I think I mentioned it is one of the few games where I bothered with the sidequests. But compared to how refreshing part one was back in 96. You were learning moves in towns and dungeons with Jack. The girl's and guy's were interesting. There was a dungeon in the desert. Interesting plot points like the sky falling and a town with a demon barrier at its entrance. It felt repetitive, and the dungeons weren't visually distinctive. I did end up liking the game though.
That's interesting. I think Symphonia is probably a harder game. But the puzzles were so weak they might as well not have existed. The only interesting one was when you had to write down some sentences that were in semi code.
thanks! symphonia coul'd've been a bit harder indeed, though i thought most of the puzzles were a lot of fun! (i remember a dungeon where you had to collect and execute a rhyme about giants... really loved that bit!) i'm going to check out w.a especially since the music is sooo good ^_^
WA3 was the first game in the series that I played and I found its style to be incredibly refreshing and solid. It takes a bit to grow on you, but the payoff is excellent. I also appreciated the sheer size of the quest, which in terms of most newer RPGs, is pretty remarkable.
I just started Wild ARMS 4, and while it plays great and the style is solid, I'm wondering why they had to get rid of the world map. Some people claimed it was tedious, but I loved searching the globe in Wild ARMS 3 and finding the dungeons, Millenium Puzzles, etc... not to mention how intimidatingly HUGE the world was. I guess the developers felt like they had to adhere more to Final Fantasy X's example, which is unfortunate.
It doesn't matter. The stories are mostly unrelated, though the setting is the same world. After putting out #3, they reissued #1 on the PS2 as 'Alter-Code F' and gave it virtually the same engine/gameplay-mechanics as #3. It's interesting that you mention Tales of Symphonia and Wild ARMS 3 in the same post, as though are the last two games I played through. I really enjoyed Symphonia, but WA3 was a much more satisfying challenge. Symphonia's dungeon-crawling sections were way too easy.
soooo awsome, this is the best theme i heard in ps2 so far ,relax and sad , the wild arms series are great 1-balance batle sistem , 2-one of the few rpgs in ps2 with world map 3 -the music
This is the only PS2 RPG (on 32) that I can complete cause i arrive to one of the last boss too weak and i mess up my save. I never played to Wild Arms 1 but i can tell you that the remake "Alter code : F" is better than Wild Arms 3.

Dust in the Wind by Kansas?
I consider it the weakest in the series of the ones I've played(not 4 or the psp ones). It still has its own unique charm that grows on you. Also it has the honor of being the last wild arms where the women are fully clothed.

1, 2, and 3 are completely different from 4 and 5. I say start with 3, its the best one in my opinion.
