Theme of wasted potential
I greatly enjoy this game for what it is, largely as a one-and-done experience. The designs are solid and the music is great. Shame its basically a 3DS game on the Switch, especially after getting showed up by BoTW and Mario Odyssey.
Fun game, raids were cool with friends as a coop thing to do besides just battling each other. Good character designs and music. Liked the balance of pokemon new and returning. Dynamaxing is a cool mechanic. I actually enjoyed the story with how it didn't shoehorn in the world is in danger and made it more like a sports thing. Though the end part had to dip it's toe in. The initial wild area was ok, though the DLC area started to go in a better direction with more varied areas. The game also made some nice changes for competitive play. It's a pretty good entry following Sun and Moon.
The only Pokemon game that I currently give a shit these days is New Pokemon Snap. Hell, I was 5 years old when the original Pokemon Snap came out for the Nintendo 64 back in 1999. I just turned 27 this month. Man, first Club House Games, then Pokemon Snap, and I know were suppose to be getting a new Wave Race game for the Switch since Shinya Takahashi hinted that, but what about F-Zero, Star Tropics, 1080, or even Sin & Punishment?

For me it's simple: the game was way too EASY! no replayability or anything, even though some of the areas etc. gave off a great classic Pokémon vibe. Plus, the wild area was a good idea but executed too blandly.

Every pokemon game will be easy. It's an RPG series for kids. The difficulty will always come from playing other people. That's why all the hard core people get into the competitive scene. But don't lie to yourself. Pokemon has never been challenging. Its just when you started playing it you didn't know the mechanics like type advantages and moves to use. Literally the reason Nuzlock runs started was to create restrictions to make the games challenging.
@LordRoto There's a vast difference between "I need to catch a variety of pokemon and know type matchups to win" and "I can easily get a lvl 100 pokemon before the first gym and almost sleepwalk through the game". EXP candies utterly obliterated all sense of progression in the game regarding a pokemons growth. Rare candies worked because they were RARE.
@LordRoto hmmm, I get where you're coming from. However, it is widely accepted under game reviewers that the games have become even easier in the last few editions. Things like standard exp-shares and trainer/wild pokemon levels that track your progress and consistently go under your own ratings is just too much for me, even for (like you said) a game that isn't meant to be a grind. In my opinion there should be some sort of difficulty level, how hard could that be? Some small AI-tweaks and general level scaling and you're done :)

I miss the old Pokemon games where the melody was more apparent instead of a flurry of music bashing my earholes. Not saying this is bad, but osts nowadays just throw every instrument at you and it's annoying to have to comprehend..whereas the old Pokemon games had way more memo-anyway..😂😂

Javi 2 Hu maybe it's more nostalgic for me in a way but in my opinion I feel the point of the song as way more direct and memorable back then. But it's nice to hear modern renditions of classic songs.
It's a great game for me. Pokémon Swsh has a lot problem, difficulty for a example. I hope the next games release in 2023.

@Soma Cruz It isn't extremely easy but, for example, if I can disable the exp. Share, I didn't afraid to over training my pokémon. On the other hand, the new mechanics to training pokémon iv and ev at post-game are wonderful.

@EvilMariobot Looks like our money's in the same place! That gorilla just appears to be the physically strongest of all the starters. It would basically be a rhythm-based Donkey Kong. Beyond starters however, Toxtricity would be a very interesting choice.

Now that it's been out for quite a while, what's the general verdict on this game? I feel like the first impressions were largely negative before its release, then were quite positive shortly after it came out, and are now back to being mostly negative. What do you guys think? The soundtrack seems quite solid but the graphics are very bland. I haven't played it myself, but it does feel like Game Freak could have put more effort/budget behind the game. In the end though, they know the games will keep selling anyways.

People always explode when expectations over certain things aren't met. The game was a huge step up from previous Pokeymens, and it was...... fine. Pretty good.
They just really desperately need to make another game that isn't collect-eight-badge-defeat-five-god

The games are fine, but considering the budget are also severely disappointing. The story felt rushed and compared to older games, the lack of post-game is pretty pathetic. Music is nice though and at the end of the day it's still Pokémon.
It's a low budget game when it seriously should NOT be low budget. Some parts of the story feel rushed, character animations are poor, textures are overall low quality and the main game is very short. It's never been this easy to get pokemon ready for online battles, at least!

@SupraDarky Well, at the very least we can all agree that the graphics were lame. Although, yeah the game itself didn't really appeal to me either...
I think fans were expecting a true change to the formula since this was the first main entry to be released for a home console. In that regard it was kind of a disappointment, but it’s not a bad game, just more of the same.

Having played only a tiny bit, my 2¢: the locales are aesthetically pleasing; the art is technically the best we have seen in any Pokémon game to date—despite not being as jaw-droppingly gorgeous as the Switch can actually handle—yet stays close to the series' established art style and doesn't vary too wildly from Sun & Moon in appearance (though unambitious, this more effectively establishes it as a sequel than a reboot); the music was really good; and the gameplay was still solid—it's not any worse than in any of the previous games, though it doesn't really raise the bar, either. In conclusion, I would give it 8/10. Good for what it is but lacks a certain je ne sais quoi.
I liked the music, but yeah, it felt very underwhelming considering the console leap. Once I beat the game I played for a couple weeks and then got bored.
Marnie's Theme might just be my favorite in the whole history of the series.
An open-world 3D pokemon game was enough for me to enjoy it, but also a lot of wasted potential and not much longevity. Good music though. Hopefully the next gen improves a lot on the rest of the game.
It's mid. Straight down the middle for me. Love the region, music's good and I like a lot of the Pokemon. How they handled the Pokemon League was great and I love a lot of the characters (especially the gym leaders). Graphically it's lagging beyond way too much to ignore and there's a bunch of weird gameplay quirks that prevent it from being better. Isle of Armor is a good step up though.
I play competitive. The game itself was decent, but gens 2-5 are still far better by comparison. I can say that comp got 1,000,000 times easier to get into. The music is still great, I also like Marnie 1 and Gym Leader’s themes. As for new Pokémon, they weren’t bad! Only complaints were Yamper’s evolution, Calyrex, maybe a few shinies, and the ability Libero on Cinderace.
the game is good enough for a pokemon game, pokemon games in general are like 10 years behind tho it improves upon most other pokemon games but the cut of the dex is a BIG no go, so far it looks like the second DLC might add most of the still missing mons hopefully? The first DLC and pokemon Home release gave us a good bunch tho, just hoping we get the rest and the second DLC adds something worth while because once you finished the game there is nothing really to work towards to.
The pokemon games have been getting worse and worse in quality ever since they went 3D and Sword/Shield was no exception. I ended up quitting before I even got my first badge, refunding it and just watching someone else stream it. ATROCIOUS dialogue, plot writing (I've never wished death on a pokemon NPC before but congratulations for being the first, Hop), dungeons and exploration, mediocre graphics and an archaic battle system that refuses to evolve forcing you to click through tons of textboxes that could easily be streamlined and the fact that game balance was zero thanks to raids and EXP candies removing any and all challenge from the game. Then of course you have Dexit as the big red nose on this clown of a game. The original burst of positive impressions were from blind fanboys and people who were just happy to play another pokemon and thus willing to overlook its many MANY flaws but time has removed that outlook and most people are now judging it objectively. If this game didn't have the pokemon brand on it but kept everything else, it would have been panned for the mediocre trash it is from the start but it's nice to see most people opening their eyes now.
It was underbaked, but showed off a lot of potential for Pokemon on console. It's a shame they didn't blow it out of the water with the first Pokemon console game, but I'm hopeful they will address a lot of the weaknesses in SwSh

I liked it. I had a team of 12, which for the first time was a viable option since you could access the PC from anywhere. That’s the absolute best thing about it. I also liked how, after you became champion, you actually had to do duties as champion for a while, even if it didn’t include defending your title like in Sun/Moon.
Its probably one of the worst pokemon games made to date. And then it's even worse because this is the first big console pokemon game.
Haven't played it but as you said I think graphics wise it could look better. I know Pokemon is not recognized for this, nor does it really need it, but being this the first main game on consoles you would think it would look much better. The game looks like a 3DS enhanced port

@Duskool Yeah I'm aware of that, but there are lots of other franchises that know that they are going to sell anyway but still you see the extra work put into it. Again, Pokemon doesn't need to be the next graphical example in games, not even close, but being this a switch game man you would think it would look more like a switch game and not a 3ds one. Hopefully they do that in the next game.
It's frustrating because it has some good things going for it but just reeks of a super rushed game that could be so much more but isn't due to the incessant "need" to churn them out every single year. Upping the price tag by $20 while offering far less content and features than previous installments is just laughable It's disheartening when you look at how evolutionary other IPs like Mario, Zelda, Fire Emblem, and Animal Crossing have been on the Switch but then you got Pokémon looking and feeling like an upscaled 3DS game

This game was certainly a mixed bag for me. There were a few highlights (music to stow on side, and fight with the dragon gym leader among them). The Wild Area is a cool idea and I definitely spent a ton of time there before even facing the first gym. Rivals were fun-good personalities. And despite the loss of half the Pokédex, there were plenty of mon to catch for a first play through. It was a fine game, really. And yet it still felt...off a bit. It’s hard to explain but I feel like HG/SS and B/W/B2/W2 is where the series was at its best. So what didn’t this game do well? Very little side stuff. No Pokethlon, Safari Zone, Dream World, Contests, etc. Not much of a post game (again, sans dlc). Gym battles mostly felt too easy (wild battles were more of a challenge at times).
I really enjoyed it. It was too fast during the league challenge and the full game was pretty short and not challenging at all, but the graphics were incredible, most of the soundtrack was pretty good, the new mechanics were fun and the characters were very fun and lovable, so I had a fun time!
i got more hours in this game than in sun/moon and pokemon y and the hoenn remakes so idk why people be calling this game non replayable or short

It's as basic as Pokemon can get, though it also added some terrible writing to the minimal story that was there. Overall, a disappointing outing for a home console debut, with very marketable characters and a great soundtrack.
@DaemonDD you said it "disappointing outing for a home console debut" the insane expectations killed this game. The pokemon community shouldnt pretend it cares about something like graphics, or even a plot, seeing as how some older games are also kids stuff on that aspect
Pokemon is the *highest grossing media franchise* in the world, at *95 billion* so what I don't get is, how do they *NOT* have a higher budget for a mainline entry?
@allthatishere because they dont gain much benefit from it as most of the revenue comes from merchandising and other media + the biggest demographic who buys the games is already pleased

it was my first switch game, i even got the pokemon themed switch lite and i absolutely hate the game, once i got botw i never played sword again
