I always liked this little observatory with its music, feels like a safe place. You forget for a moment that a giant Moon is heading your way.

It's funny, because it's the complete contrary to me. This music always stressed me out. Much more than other scary music of the game. The atmosphere in which this music plays is the complete contrary of the music itself.

There's a purity to what Nintendo did with these two games that can't and won't be replicated. You had an incredible preceding game that revolutionized the series by bringing it flawlessly into 3D for the first time, creating easily one of the greatest games of all time... and then you had an unlikely, brilliantly twisted mirror universe version of THAT classic that brought the series into the (uncharacteristically) darkest place Zelda has ever gone... and it all somehow worked!

wouldn't fit into Breath of the Wild at least, that game doesn't mix "childhood dreams" and light-heartedness into its melting pot of themes like Majora's Mask and the child Link segment of Ocarina of Time

Licinius Varrus I liked botw and all, but I wished it had more themes.. not just places like the observatory, the windmill, etc.. the dungeons, forest temple, water temple.. the divine beasts were good and all, but I’d loved if the shrines at least had different themes.. idk how to explain it well.. but i feel that even if botw is a great game, and it made a lot of improvements to the franchise, it’s missing a lot of the zelda elements that made those game iconic. Memorable music, brilliantly designed and varied themed dungeons, unique story and setting.

I mean when I look back at botw, It didn’t hit me emotionally as majora mask or alttp did, it was all about the gameplay, the story (and music 🤦🏻‍♀️) didn’t impact me much.. and it’s not just botw.. i feel that most games nowadays focus on gameplay over a strong story and emotional impact, such a shame, really.

@Mahhayo you're quite right about everything, in my opinion, though I don't like to associate botw with "great", "good", or any other positive descriptor of any kind JRPGs are often still story/emotional-impact focused, though, regardless of whetjer or not they deliver well

Licinius Varrus, yeah you’re absolutely right, except I don’t know if botw’s considered an rpg.. anyways, I’m kinda surprised you’re not too fond of botw 😅 oh well, let’s hope the sequel nails the zelda feels, after all the developers said it’ll be “darker than majora mask” 😍👍🏻

@Licinius Varrus Probably the four bars at 0:12. The VIIb7 to vii gives that dissonant feeling, ending with a III7-vi deceptive cadence.

@commanderkief I was wondering if there are chords in there that give that feeling but fly over my head. Yup, flies over my head when the music does that, or perhaps because I am more accustomed to, and even somewhat prefer, dissonance?

This song is my favorite song in Majora's Mask. No other song in MM really hammered home the sadness and tragedy of the game like this one.
