I finally have enough energy to be out of bed, I had a terrible flu the past week. Link's Awakening has always been my favorite 2D Zelda and I'm glad to say that this is a very solid remake with only a few flaws. The biggest improvement has to be the better inventory system, thanks to many items being automatically equipped once you find them. In the original version, each item must be mapped to one of the two face buttons and you have to switch them all the time. That right there is enough for me to call it a satisfying remake. Apart from that, the visuals are charming, the remade soundtrack is much better than I first anticipated and I love the fact that there are no longer segmented screens on the overworld. The biggest flaw is well known, which is the unexplainably poor performance on the Switch. There really is no excuse, not when you have a game like Zelda BOTW running flawlessly. I also still feel like the remake doesn't truly capture the original's mysterious/darker atmosphere that made it so memorable. At least the Face Shrine was still the highlight in terms of atmosphere. Overall an excellent remake.

@Mangatomboy There are some sections on the overworld where you get a lot of framedrops (the marsh in front of Bottle Cave comes to mind). I heard about it before playing the game and it was definitely noticeable.

BOTW doesn't run flawlessly lol. With that being said, you're still right. Personally tho, I think this a letdown of a remake, and shouldn't be full price.

Once again, this doesn't have anything to do with the topic at hand, but let's just say hypothetically speaking, if Fire Emblem Three Houses was one of your favorite games last year, you still wouldn't put it on this list because of the copyright issues you had with the series in the past, right?

@FF & Pokémon will NEVER be good again dude it’s not that bad, a couple frame drops doesn’t make it a failure. Also I think I would know it how it ran on my switch.

It's your favourite 2D Zelda? I would personally rank A Link to the Past, A Link Between Worlds and The Minish Cap higher than it, so it's not even close to me. Too many issues, from overworld to dungeon design to story. It's a simple story with a lot of charm and some dark elements, but it doesn't blow my mind exactly.

@Tomiply I love all these games as well, but Link's Awakening brought many innovations that heavily influenced the rest of the series (music-wise for example, each dungeon having its theme). Aonuma says Link's Awakening had a bigger impact and I can definitely see it. I remember playing both LTTP and Link's Awakening back to back and it made me realize how much simpler LTTP actually is, in terms of gameplay elements, puzzles, dungeons, overworld traversal. There's a very interesting interview with Aonuma and director Tezuka who was behind both games, and it's interesting to see they also prefer Link's Awakening. Apart from that, ALBW surpassed LTTP for me.

@SupraDarky Link's Awakening is not only my favorite 2D Zelda game, but also my favorite Zelda game of all time. Due to how revolutionary it was for Game Boy standards, especially for 1993 (the year I was born and also a fantastic year for video games), also how fun the title really is and more so I find Marin superior than Zelda and should be Link's true love compare to Zelda IMHO.

@Gaming will NEVER be good again My interest in Fire Emblem has been declining the past years so I haven't played Three Houses, which I heard is very good thankfully. If it was in my top of the year, I wouldn't upload a track from it but I would leave a gap in the Top and mention it in the next upload.

The remake was a super mixed bag for me and trying to 100% it soured the experience. I doubt I'll pick it up again over the GBC DX version. The QOL changes were fantastic (the map feature that shows where you've found heart pieces and seashells NEEDS to become a series staple) but the new minigame stuff was obnoxious and Link's speed and physics felt wrong.

I thoroughly enjoyed the game, and hope they'll do the same with the Oracle Games; hopefully also finding a way to combine the two onto a single card.

switch carts have alot of space they could easily fit links awakening and both oracle games on one car though just because they can does not mean they will. It will be 2 carts and 3 dlcs later because nintendo wants their money

I am so glad that I finally got to play Link's Awakening for the first time last year. It truly is an incredible Zelda game and the music was incredible.

@SupraDarky totally. I remember getting the gbc colour version for the first time when it came out. I was hyped beyond belief. I'll get a switch one day and have that feeling all over again
