This theme is either underrated or underknown, or both. It deserves much more appreciation than it has currently because, in my opinion, its right up there with Stickerbush Symphony
1:45 until the song loops. So impressive. A lot of games around here and still to this day have like 45 second loops and this song has so many different leading melodies in that time. David Wise was truly on some crack when he made this

That's so cool. I wish they went with their original planning, it's unorthodox but I love the idea of a game's final level having mournful music rather than the typical let's-get-you-hyped
What amazes me about this -- I'd never heard of it before -- is how much Hot Head Bop fits in with DKC2's soundtrack, and goes beyond DKC1's more simple atmospherics. IMO, it's almost like Wise was growing as a composer as he made the soundtrack to DKC1, and took 2 in this new (even better) direction.

Very clever way of limiting the amount of sound "layers" being played, instead of having the song and the bubbling sounds playing at the same time which would probably be hard for the SNES to handle, David just combined the two into one track. Love it.

Not so much Genesis, but Bayou Boogie sounds very similar to In the Air Tonight, and there's one small part of this track that sounds like Separate Lives by Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin.
I listed to genesis's song "Mama" for the first time in a while the other day, and it struck me how much the track (without vocals of course) sounded like a DKC track, similar synth sound

DKC2 is, imo, one of the top, if not THE top game of the 16-bit gen. Having said that, it took me ages to realise you could move the god damn hot air balloons in this level. Trying to make jumps off them led to much anger!
Agreed. They should make something as creative as Hornet Hole, a level full of honey and Zingers. DKC is about variety in level themes, unlike say New Super MArio Bros.

I guess I can see that for the levels. I disagree for the bosses though. They were just controlling the actual bosses; the design for each was distinct and ingenious.
Well, you know, there was too much of the jungle in DKCR, 2 & 3 had much more varied environments, you know? And the bosses all followed the one theme, big Tiki guys (if I recall correctly). As I say, it just wasn't the same for me, and I'm jealous of people who find it just as good :P Take care.

I got this game when I was 9. I played it as recently as this past January, just before my 27th birthday. DKC is classic timeless masterpiece, like Chrono Trigger.

I think you two have some interesting points, but I think you're right overall. Graphics were important back then. But unlike today's games, graphics were the not the ONLY thing stressed, and that's why video games back then seem to be on another level. EVERYTHING was stressed: Music, graphics, gameplay, and storyline. But at the same time, I think that some recent have stressed several factors instead of just graphics too. I guess graphics is a factor that's easier to notice.

I used to own this game. Good memories. This is indeed one of my top favorite themes from this game.
No the graphics weren't important THAT much. Sega Genesis/Mega Drive almost won the console war, even though it had worse graphics than the SNES. All Sega had to do was produce more great games, but instead they started making shitty addons while SNES concentrated on making great games like DKC, which made addons like Sega CD and 32x look ridiculous.
Imagine if the quality of games today were the same as in the 16bit era.

I don't disagree with you, however like I read in an article before, you've to accept that as today is all fps, back then it was all platformers, most of them with "the same shitty engines and gameplay". Only a few like this game or others came along as the best, but there were a lot of awfuls of mario wannabe. However I try to take the best from both eras and try to enjoy both.

@storyd12 You can play this over and over. I've the game on virtual console and SNES and play through it every now and then. It takes me, an experienced player, an hour to 1.5 hours to finish without 100%. That's a little less than an evening of play.

This reminds me of hot milk with butter (I was utterly plagued with the flu when I first played, so my grandma [Godd be with her] did it for me). Warm and tasty, like the levels this played on. Ah, the nostalgia of playing this on the original console on a cold day while wrapped up in a blanket... I still do it, but I use an emu (frustrating, but better than jack).

this game and many other games on the snes had the best music! earth worm jim 2, chrono trigger, super mario world, star fox donkey kong country, elc. beleve it or not some snes game support Dolby surround!

Erm, ironically, you had better music quality out of a TV than a DS; tragically the SNES isn't about to put how the same tones, they just happen to sound a hell of a lot better than they would coming out of a DS.

The quality of this music, considering how limited the tools the composers had to work with, is unreal. This could easily be mistaken for something on the DS.

Yeah, some games would settle on just the lava gloopy noise in the background of this track, call it an ambient background track and then say it's done. Failures, the lot of 'em.

Definately. Cept I think DKC1 was better than DKC3. The 3rd game while good kinda rubbed me the wrong way for some reason. I think the music just wasnt as good as the other two, either was the setting

yeah I realized that when I first played it... but then when I actually played it.. it became one of the world's best videogame ideas ever! and I agree... good tracks can make a game a whole lo better. but I wouldn't care if this game had a bad sound track, it would still be one of my most favrite and most memorable games ever.
Pretty good. I can't say which one I like better, but the GBA version is kinda cool(it has more piano additions[serious piano fan])

They do, but it seems less and less common. I believe they use lots of computer-themed sounds during the music for the LOGBOX-720 world in Nuts & Bolts, for instance. But that's the only recent example I can think of. Of course, I haven't played Kameo, and it's quite possible there, but... *Shrug* It's kind of a shame.
That's the interesting thing about Rareware. They like to add ambiance to some of their level music tracks to make it sound more organic and lively. I'm not sure if they still do that or not though... Do they? If they don't because they were bought out by Microsoft, then they're missing a classic element of Rare.

The fact that the sounds of magma and such are integrated into the song itself is absolutely wonderful. There aren't a lot of games that try to do something like that.
Awesome song! I remember how epic this song was in the lava stages like hot heap hop. Oh yeah the air ballon was hard back then for me. Good song. Best Soundtrack of all three DKC series.
Indeed, my favorite DK game from the trilogy, due the epic music. David Wise put a great effort in these songs.
I forgot how much I loved the music from Donkey Kong Country 2. It was kinda more relaxed, a little sadder, but still perfectly fitting for the game, with that little harmonica line in the background of some songs i love it. Great game

No, I think this was the level where you had to jump on crocodile heads across lava. IIRC the greens ones stayed still but the brown ones would open their mouths when you landed on them, making you jump super-high.
This is my second-favorite track from the game (Forest Interlude being my favorite). I need to learn to play this on the keyboard. Doesn't seem like it would be all that difficult.

I love this one. It's another example of an unexpectedly good song from this surprisingly strong sound track. It's quite a cool track, really. Doesn't sound like it would suit lava levels. Good to see the list back :)
