I'll never forget the hype I had for this game and how much it delivered on it. I remember watching the first gameplay video and hearing this theme kick off in the beginning, and just being blown away by the sound quality compared to the GBA. The two Sorrow games are top notch.

Are you me? I also remember seeing the first gameplay trailer on gametrailers and this song kicking off while Soma walked on the village. Man those were the days.

Same here. I was really excited when the E3 trailer was posted and this song kicked in and I had to have the game. I mean, I would have anyway because IGA Castlevania, but after the GBA games this music was a revelation. Drawing the glyphs was a PITA but the rest of the game was great.

I prefer Portrait, physically and aurally. I was kinda underwhelmed by this after Aria because I felt like Aria got by on its own merits whereas DoS relied a lot on SotN nostalgia. I also wasn't crazy about this OST. Idk why but a lot of the music sounded like it was from Sailor Moon or something. But then Portrait came through with that leg drop.

I think I've spent over 200 hours on this game. Didn't get to finish my 999% run, though. A 999% run, of course, being obtaining 9 of every soul and item. Which, due to how the one-handed sword upgrade path works, requires a minimum of 27 full playthroughs.

I dunno, I didn't enjoy Dawn of Sorrow very much. Aria of Sorrow quickly became my favorite Metroidvania when it released, but I feel like Dawn really let me down as a proper sequel. The other two DS Metroidvanias were top notch and I replayed them several times. I could only stomach one Dawn playthrough, even though Aria may have been my most played GBA game.

Dawn is kinda jank. The luck stat doing nothing, needing to use boss souls to make the best weapons, being able to sequence break it with ease, the final areas being a real mess visually. Aria had a way stronger castle design and getting souls wasn't a chore, especially with the ring.

One of my favorite beginning tracks - sets such a good mood, now it's become very nostalgic too. I recently replayed DoS and it holds up very well. I played Portrait of Ruin shortly before and it couldn't compare imo. The only thing DoS is missing for perfection is Ayami Kojima's character art.

Everything in this game built so well on the first (with the sole exception being the glyphs you had to draw to finish off a boss). The best addition has to be the Soul Fusion mechanic, where you used souls on weapons to evolve them, advacing down branching paths and reaching the ultimate form. It really encourages the player to choose between a powerful ability or a stronger weapon.

I want to say that I’d like a new Castlevania game and get in on the hype that I missed, but Konami today thinks that Metal Gear Survive and Contra Rogue Corps are acceptable quality games. I’ll just stick with Bloodstained.

@TypicallyUnique it's probably a nostalgia thing but the Sorrow games (esp. Dawn) were basically SotN+the soul feature+a bit more difficulty depth

@abcdefghdumbo I've beaten them all and I like them all. SOTN had the best atmosphere and also the first to do it. I like the weapons, spells, music, story... all of it the most. The only thing I didn't like about it was how it got easier towards the second half.
