What better way to counter my denial of the cold season starting with a nice summer tune. Looking back, this game and its sequel were quite the unique and dark/depressing ride, unlike anything I've played. Sure it gets some inspiration from some other games, but it's really its own thing. Interestingly, I remember seeing some tweets from the creator saying he actually hated Buddy/Lisa (the character) and regretted making the Joyful sequel, which was done because of a Kickstarter stretch goal before he even finished writing the story. As they say, you're often your harshest critic.

Interesting to know, I also disliked Buddy, even though she has some interesting moments in the Joyful. But some things definitely make more sense knowing this.

I also disliked the sequel and felt like it was done in a rush and/or not as polished as the painful, thanks for letting us know

Love how this song completely ruins its own tempo with the random drums in the middle of its hook, just driving an unsettling vibe into you like a nail. I wonder if he'd update the game just to change the story, or even just touch up her dialogue to make her more likable in his eyes. I mean, from a business perspective it's a waste of time, but I'd totally do that in my spare time if I was a game dev.

You don't like the cold season? To be honest it's my favorite time of the year. Also I don't think, this particular piece sounds like a summer tune 😂

I'm not too crazy about the sequel, myself. Buddy inexplicably becomes an edgelord who wants to conquer the world and kills (or, at least is sorely tempted to kill) a bunch of pacifists and Lisa, the protagonist of the first game who we've been given intimate insights into the hellish abuse she's suffered at the hands of her father (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kb0YUvgBcVc), is suddenly revealed to have known Buzzo and she goaded him into mutilating small animals and cutting her with a buzzsaw. Okay... I don't remember any of that when I looked into every nook and cranny of her _mind_ but I guess that's canon, now. On the other hand, the fangames, Pointless and Hopeful, are magnificent.

The whole soundtrack has something a little weird going on. Has a sort of vibe like, they only -kinda- know how to make music. It fits in a way, when it's a game mostly populated by washed up middle aged guys who maybe played music in high school.

LISA the PAINFUL/JOYFUL is my third favorite RPG, just behind Undertale and Mother 3.

Absolutely one of the best indie RPGS out there. I fucking love this game, and the soundtrack is absolutely amazing and should frankly be listened to more often by people.

Have you played Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass? It’s very much in the indie RPG mold of LISA, Undertale, et al. It’s an emotional roller coaster: lots of funny moments as well as tragic ones. Of course, it has excellent music as well.

Bless you, I've been trying to find games like lisa and undertale for so long. So far I've found space funeral, Ib, yume nikki, and night in the woods. I will 100% try this game out, it looks great, thank you for the indirect recommendation

My recommendation comes with a big warning: it's easily the most heavily emotional game I've ever played. And I've played LISA, Mother 3, and OFF.

EVERYONE who enjoys a good dark story needs to play this game at least once. It's a fantastic experience.
