So, what's the verdict on KH3? I've been hearing a lot of mixed thoughts. I'll be honest, this is a series for me that started very high and then just stumbled down to almost not paying attention to it anymore. I blame the side games for that, I remember being bored with Chain of Memories and Birth by Sleep when I realized I just kept running around fighting in lifeless corridors. That mixed with the convoluted story and a dropping presence of the Square-Enix characters. I know a lot of people like BBS though, so it's all subjective of course. I definitely want to give the 3rd game a chance since it's finally a new mainline entry.

the third one is worth your time if you liked kingdom hearts 2! the combo system is a lil wacky but its an acquired taste. story wise. .... :')

3rd one isn't so great. Battle system and story are all over the place, and the overall experience feels really short and rushed...

Based on what you liked/didn’t like about previous games, I’m gonna say KH3 probably isn’t your cup of tea unfortunately.

Kh3 is fun but not as good as kh2. Just don't use attractions (press L1 to cancel if accidently activated) Its my 2nd favorite game in the series. Also don't play critical, it's awful and unbalanced, stick to proud, even if it's on the easy side this time.

For me it was extremely disappointing. Good game overall but definently not what I expected. Doesn't live up to the originals and it doesn't have that punch you know? It's like they just wanted to get things over with. But that's just what I think

Kh3 hurt my soul bro. I can ignore the story being wacky but not combat mechanics or a lack of stuff to do or worlds that look pretty but don't have much to explore. Nothing is re-used. It's one and done for every world then you get the final battles which are the only parts I look back on fondly. I wouldn't recommend to any die-hard fans.

I played every game back to back right before KHIII came out, and all I can really say is that I was very disappointed.

Agree with you there. Chain of Memories wasn't so bad, but then it just kept worse as they kept adding games and just made the lore and world building just piecemeal as they went on. Plus the fact they kept putting one game on one system, another on a next, then re-releasing the compilations and adding even more things to those. I haven't played KH3 yet (it's in my little pile of games to get to), so I have to wait and see on how it is.

Honestly, the series should've ended at KH2. It was the perfect sequel to KH1 (let's disregard CoM) and an improvement in every aspect. I don't think most people disagree when I say it was the very pinnacle of the whole series. The entries that were on different handheld consoles were indeed lacking in the technical aspects and had some hit-or-miss gimmicks (my brother HATED Flow-Motion and Dream Eaters in DDD but I liked them), but what killed it for me was the story. Things got progressively more complicated and people who didn't happen to own all of the required consoles and who didn't spoil themselves had no idea what was going on. But even if they did, they all, even Nomura himself, chucked up the sponge in regards to the story during and after DDD. Things got unnecessarily complicated and the stakes were set high for KH3 (in terms of story and the expected quality). Sadly KH3 was a huge letdown in many aspects which I don't feel like detailing since there are dozens of videos on that topic here on Youtube already, though its one redeeming factor is that it's absolutely gorgeous to look at, and the novelty bonus that it's finally bringing an over decade long story into an (unsatisfying) end.

severe disappointment. kh1 and kh2 are classic games, but 3 is such a poorly-conceived mess on so many levels, it feels utterly disrespectful to the fans who played all those handheld spinoff titles assuming they were leading up to something great. i wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

It's a great game, but honestly it's such a polished turd if you were looking for any resolution to the main overarching plot. They dropped the ball hardcore on giving any payoff or reason to complete the story. There are so many reasons I can guess as to why it turned out the way it did. It had such *fantastic potential* but ultimately it's lost on the mess of a plot. The game also markedly lacks what the original two had: atmosphere. It's gone. The darkness, the emotional mood, the innocence lost-- it's just a shallow shell of what it used to be. Also I'm so pissed there's no presence or mention of Square characters really. Probably Disney politics at play. And I really wish they would have integrated the story a little with the Disney plots... they literally inserted Sora and gang to the side while Elsa sings "Let It Go." Wtf.

This! This exact song was what made me fell in love with the franchise! I really liked KH1 before.. But when I played KH2 way back and this song popped up the first time I instantly fell in love with the game. Don't know why.. but I did. Truly a masterfull song for a legendary game.

I approve of this ost choice. A fine addition to the Best VGM collection. I want it in smash. I don't even care about sora as DLC or whatever. Just the music.

With that being said however, if the exclusion of Final Fantasy cameos is what bothers you most about the series, you'll probably won't enjoy KH3, as there are LITERALLY no Final Fantasy characters at all except for the Moogles.

Never did get that exclusion. Like you billed it as Final Fantasy meets Disney in KH1, then you got them in KH2, and then... poof. Gone.

I totally understand the decline of interest in the Kingdom Hearts series since KH2. They basically built up to KH3 with little side stories the same that the Marvel Cinematic Universe built up to Avengers with singular movies. But they did a terrible job of it as the story only got more convoluted and reliant upon retcons the further it went in. I was more or less hoping that KH3 would be good at best. Miraculously however, I ended up loving KH3. It knew what its focus was; the Disney Worlds. While it does have a dreary main story that's really uninteresting, the game wisely pays litle attention to it and instead focuses on increasing the scope and detail of the Disney Worlds. Each Disney World is its own fun little sandbox - no more corridors - it's all wide open areas where you jump fly and explore. And it's the good kind of sandbox where it rewards you for exploring. It has a smartphone mechanic, which sounds cringey at first, but they managed to implement it in a fun way. Taking selfies at literally any point in the game (including the final boss!) was a delight, and the idea of adding Hidden Mickeys for you to find with the phone made exploring the areas that much more fun. And while the story eventually rears its ugly head at the end, at least it gives you tons of boss battles and events to fight rather than primarily bombard you with cutscenes like KH2's final world did. In terms of music, KH3's score is excellent. While a lot of it is rearrangements from tracks throughout the series, it still has its own plethora of original tunes that I'm sure would be a welcome addition to your list. Overall, KH3 is simply fun. It did what I couldn't imagine it would do, and made me feel like a kid again playing it. If the story and cutscenes bother you a lot, you can easily skip it. Definitely recommend it.

Well, coincidentally, the art you chose to feature here summarises KH's development quite well. It sports an astounding number of 3 Disney characters to 10 non-Disney ones.

Honestly I only truly LOVED KH1. I liked KH2, and Chain of Memories, but they didn't have the charm and simplicity of KH1, which is what made it such a great game. Man, I really feel like Square could have done a MUCH better job with the KH franchise. Oh well.

I love the opening chapter of kh2 so much, and this is my favourite track from the series
