This is a series that was long overdue to have its own x00 entry and with the recent Smash announcement, the timing was perfect. I'm waiting for the Switch version to play DQXI and I'm very excited. If I had to rank my favorites in the series: #9 DQ II - #8 DQ I - #7 DQ VI - #6 DQ IX - #5 DQ VIII - #4 DQ IV - #3 DQ VII - #2 DQ III - #1 DQ V.

DQ3 is my favorite of all I enjoy playing that pachisi mini game but i keep falling in holes and have to start the board again my comfort food is kingdom Hearts and the dragon quest series

Just wanted to say I only just got into Dragon Quest this year after a lifetime of loving JRPG's and never getting around to DQ. I immediately fell in love and felt an odd sense of nostalgia for the series, not necessarily for DQ directly, but the fact DQ itself represents everything I love in the genre. It's a series I wish I got into years ago, but I'm glad I finally did.

1. Favorite games are DQ7 and DQ Monsters 2 2. Comfort food game series is either Viva Pinata or Katamari 3. Favorite RPG series is forever Pokemon 4. Japanese RPG's are the best 5. Slimes hands down and '86 is a great year (my birth year too!). We got to a lot of great gaming under our belts.

1. DQVIII since it's the game in the series I've played the most. 2. Pokémon definitely. I can get lost in the stats and moves. 3. That's a tough question! I like Shin Megami Tensei and Pokémon pretty evenly. 4. JRPGs for the soundtracks, my dude. I liked Skyrim, though. 5. Moogle. I'm thinking of how they'd look in real life, which I imagine would be close to FFXII's design.

1.) I have yet to play any Dragon Quest game. In general, my exposure to JRPGs has been lacking to say the least. 2.) It used to be World of Warcraft, but I recently made the switch to Final Fantasy XIV. I'm a video-gaming socialite. 3.) That medal has to go to Dark Souls, without a single doubt or instant of hesitation. I'm perpetually floored by just how dense, atmospheric, replayable, and well-made those games are. I haven't tired of talking about them for several years now! 4.) I seem to prefer the gist of JRPGs and I've even spent many a dozen hours happily grinding and powerleveling in several of them (Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger come to mind most prominently). That is, of course, not even talking about the stories of those games that I often find myself enjoying greatly. However, I find myself spending more time with and thinking more about western RPGs. There's Dark Souls, of course, but I'm also flirting with playing classics like Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment or Fallout, as well as some of the excellent Metroidvanias that cropped up the past few years. 5.) Gotta be honest, I find none of them particularly cute. But the rabite wins for me due to the shape of its eyes.

Dragon Quest XI is awesome, I am playing with Super Hard Monsters on and it's great. I also play dozens of other games at time so I did take a long break from it, but I am in Act 3 now so to speak. Sure there was a cheap boss and a difficult boss or two along the way but I wanted a more authentic NES feel to the game as opposed to just breezing through normal mode without even having to heal.

1. Never played one. I severely lack time and decided for myself to first play all FFs in order...Played I&II about 10 years ago and III this year. So at this rate...I might start my first DQ perhaps in 2070. xD 2. Mario Party! From the music, to taking turns to annihilating the CPU. Just perfect to wind down. Perhaps it's good I accidentally stopped after MP 5. 3. Never really been a big RPG player. I'll go with Mega Man Battle Network, if that counts. 4. Both are fine. 5. Rabite.

@ShadowWolf767 As mentioned in the initial post I have only recently finished 3, so next up I can finally move on to the SNES trilogy. That should be a mighty leap. ;) So far, I like them all. Each has its own strengths and I also really enjoyed 2. But the DS rendition of 3 isn't so hot. I'd have prefered a remake like for 1 and 2 on GBA.

@Burkhart von Klitzing I played 3 on the psp (emu) and while it is the same as the ds verison, I gotta say I ain't a big fan of 3, not that I hated it, but not much of a impact to be honest, 1 was my favorite in the nes trilogy, but surprisingly 2 for as much hate as it gets wasnt that bad, and I had some fun with it, but heck was it dark XD I agree on ya tho, I wish 3 had a more basic remake like the first two, If your gonna play ff4 I could recommend the psp version, its freaking beautiful with the pixel art, something you might be up for. Currently ff6 is going good and soon I'll be entering the ps1 trilogy and onwards :)

I. I can't say for sure what game is my favorite; II. Both Kirby or Mother series. (I always find my way back to them in one way or another, love them!) III. Dragon Quest, Mother, Mana and Chrono series. (I just can't choose one between them xD) IV. Nothing against Western RPG's, but JRPG's for the win! V. Slimes stills cute, but in a weird way for me, so I'm picking Rabites!

1: DQ7, though that's the only one I have beaten 2: Mario, especially the 3D Mario games. Those are always great. 3: Probably Final Fantasy. I have beaten 3 games in the series but I got up to the final boss in 2 and then either I got stuck and later my console broke (X) or my save got corrupted (V). Apparently I never get lucky in this series :( 4: Japanese in general. Though Western RPGs are also great and put a lot of emphasis in choice, I tend to prefer the Japanese ones more 5: All of them are super cute :)

1. I only played like half of DQ3, so that. 2. Fighting games in general. Love trying new tech and characters in training mode! 3. Chrono Trigger, the way magic attacks differ wildly based on your party composition is one of the coolest rpg mechanics to date! 4. Japanese, altough I'm always on the lookout for western rpgs that do something cool with its mechanics. 5. Gotta go with the slime.

Hello, old friend. 1) Unfortunately, I've never finished a DQ game. The only two I've played were VIII and IX, and I preferred VIII. 2) Pokemon is 100% comfort food god bless those little pocket monsters. 3) It's hard to say, there's so many. Maybe the SMT: Persona games? 4) I like both and play them for different reasons! JRPGs I feel dliver better stories and offer more challenging combat, but Western RPGs offer better world building and exploring. They're just ~ different ~ 5) I think I have to say a Kupo! The little guys in FF IX just stole my heart ugh <3

Favorite Game in series: Dragon Warrior IV (currently playing V and I'm enjoying it) Comfort Food Series... I can't decide there are so many able contenders. There's the 4x games of the 90s like Master of Orion 2 and Master of Magic or the first X-Com. Nintendo Classics of the 80s and 90s. Warcraft III? Hard to decide. Favorite RPG Series... Chrono Trigger wasn't exactly a series so I'll say Dragon Quest because even though I've only played or am playing I-V it's more consistent than Final Fantasy. I mean I would never play Dragon Warrior on the NES again or recommend to anyone that they do but they 'fixed' it in later editions vs Final Fantasy which has its amazing hits but its underwhelming misses. Same with other leading contender, Fallout. Fallout and Fallout NV are phenomenal but the others just aren't as good. There's aspects from each (JRPG/WRPG) that I enjoy it really depends on how well a particular title is executed. In the SNES era, JRPGs ruled to the point where I'm hard pressed to come up with a WRPG for the SNES besides shitty ports like Eye of the Beholder. Final Fantasy IV (II) FF VI (III) Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana (action RPG but w/e), Super Mario RPG... All amazeballs. On the PC there was Ultima Underworld the Stygian Abyss (Skyrim in a Volcano Dungeon). Baldur's Gate series and Mass Effect are also very well done. Fallout I, II & New Vegas are also worthy games (well maybe not so much Fallout II, it kinda sprawls and sprawls + they railroad you with character vs player knowledge vis a vis world map locations)

1. DQ V. I really like the story of that game and it's very replayable because of the monster recruitment mechanic. DQ III and DQ IX are also in my top 3 because they are also replayable with the class mechanic. 2. Pokemon. 3. Both Final Fantasy and DQ are both up there as my personal favorites, but I am going to go with DQ because they are consistent with their quality. 4. I prefer Japanese RPGs. 5. Slime. Why would you say no to that smile?

1. Never played one, but I'm planning on getting my hands on XI in September 2. While the recent expansions have put me off World of Warcraft, once Classic is out I think it'll fill this spot. It's the perfect blend, where I know it well enough to not worry about learning mechanics, while also always providing new challenges and adventures. Only problem is that it requires a subscription. Otherwise my comfort games tend to change. Right now I'm engrossed in Persona 4 - while I've never played it before I watched a Let's Play way back, so in a way it's nostalgic, like going over to an old friend's house. 3. Right now, probably Persona. It's the perfect blend between visual novel and RPG elements, and I adore how status effects are not only useful, but necessary. It's a trait I've sorely missed from a lot of games. I wonder if it holds true for Dragon Quest? 4. I don't know if I've played enough RPGs to answer this question, especially when it comes to western ones, but for now I'll say Japanese. Thanks to Pokémon turn based combat has never bothered me, and overall I prefer their stories, settings and visuals. Japanese media tends to make stories that are energetic and happy, while also not being afraid to throw punches and throw in some genuine philosophical questions. It's a blend I enjoy, and one that's sorely missing from the media in my own country. I guess you can say i find a lot of western games to be too pessimistic. Although I do miss some of the freedom often present in western RPGs, and they can be fantastic at building a world. I've only done a brief visit to Morrowind, but my short experience there, along with visits to WoW and Everquest helps build a world that isn't always present in Japanese RPGs. Where you're just a nobody in a vast unexplored universe. It'd be interesting to see an eastern company try their hands on making a western-style RPG, and vice versa 5. Kupo~

I refuse to answer your questions. All I'm going to say is that, YES you people should try this series. Don't start with the first one unless you can handle a really REALLY old school RPG on the NES. Try XI, try VIII, try VII, hell try IV or V. They're all fantastic. This series is far too underrated in America. If you've ever been upset that Final Fantasy went off the rails....you should have switched to Dragon Quest eons ago.

1 - Sorry, never played dragon quest 2 - Maybe Dark Souls or Pokemon 3 - Not a fan of "True" RPGs, but action games, strategy games or pretty much every type of game with RPG element is great. It would be pokemon or Baldur's gate 4 - I prefer Western ones in general 5 - Kupo

Oh well: 1) I think my favorite DQ is IV but i haven't played all of them yet; 2) Kingdom Hearts! 3) As much as I love KH and Final Fantasy, Shin Megami Tensei (and all its spin-offs, including Persona) it's really special 5) For me there was never a real comparison, I like more JRPG but I started thinking about it after Deus Ex: Human Revolution 6) I'm going to follow my heart and say the Moguri, kupo!

The nostalgia power is sure a thing. To be honest the first DQ game I played was XI and yet I felt such great nostalgia playing it, as if I played games in the series before. I really enjoy my time with XI, there is something very comforting and sincere about the game for me, something that's rarely found in today's games, not to mention the magical music, I mean, how can you play it and not have a smile on your face?!

1. I actually only tried one or two old games of this franchise and never more than 30 minutes. Probably starting from DQ I is too rough for a newcomer. If anyone has advice on which one is a good starting point, let me know. 2. I think I am in a bit of a middle age crisis when it comes to games. I'd probably go for a metroidvania, but not necessarily a Metroid game. 3. There are several, but I would pick the Mana series. I have a theory that your favorite RPG is the first one you play, and for me it was Secret of Mana. 4. JRPGs. I prefer to experience the story that the characters are going through without inserting myself into the game.

DQI actually _is_ the best starting point, I feel. It’s as straightforward as it gets with one optional sidequest (rescuing the Princess) and can be plowed through in a few hours. Bear in mind; this game basically introduced level grinding, so it’s not a suggestion there. After that, good ol’ DQIII! —Alas, II is kind of the middling stepchild. ^^;;

To think that my first experience with the saga was with a spin-off: Dragon Quest Monsters; btw, my favorite DQ is DQ VI (because Terry, appears in both DQ VI and DQM!)

1. Dragon Quest Builders. The gameplay is fresh and I'll get the sequel as soon as I can. 2. Probably Castlevania. 3. Fallout, up to a point. 4. WRPG. Turn-based combat is only fun to a point if it isn't a tactics game. 5. Rabite. Slime has that Barney syndrome where they're always happy. Moogles are just too inconveniently shaped.

0:15 roguelikes kinda do it better, and borderlands as well given heavy loot. DQIII Pachisi was amazing, shame they took it and the minimedals out in the lazy mobile port, Appreciate the history.

1. I've never dug into this series, it comes across as far too archaic for me. I would like to try one entry at some point though, and I'm most interested in VIII. 2. No specific genre, my comfort food would have to be old favourites. 3. Final Fantasy, due to the sheer number of great games. 4. I've played more JRPGs, but I tend to enjoy WRPGs more (as long as we're talking "pure" rpgs, and not hybrids mixed with action, platforming and the like). *EDIT:* 5. KUPO!

1. I played Dragon Warrior 1 on the NES and Dragon Warrior VII on the PS1 back in the day, and I couldn't get into either of them... however, after playing Dragon Quest XI for the better part of 3 months, and finally beating it, I am going to go back and revisit what this series has to offer. I was blown away by how great Dragon Quest XI was...so that has to be my answer here. 2. Hmm this is a tough question...it used to be the Madden and NBA 2K series years ago when they actually tried and made good advancements every year. But that was easily over a decade ago. Now? I'd probably say the Persona series. At least from 3 on up, they follow a similar flow, and you know what you are going to get with them. 3. Has to be Final Fantasy for me. Even considering the last 18 years or so, the one thing you can't ever say is that they don't try new things. Plus, FFVII is my favorite game ever...which is shortly followed by FF Tactics and FFIX. 4. JRPGs, but I still enjoy playing both. There are amazing games in both genres. 5. Slime... moogles annoy me, and I don't like the looks of that rabite. Lol

1. Dragon Quest IX is my favorite game of all time. 2. DQ, but mostly because I write a DQIX Fanfic, which I only get to write when I’m truly relaxed. But I also have fond memories of playing Dragon Quest Builders on a rainy Sunday while sick. 3. Recently, I think DQ has finally taken the crown, though the Mario & Luigi and the DS-Era Pokemon games are also strong contenders. 4. I think I prefer JRPGs, though I’m not quite familiar with the difference between the two. 5. Slime will always be the best.

It's a bit hard to describe the difference between "JRPGs" and "Western RPGs", especially since there's American-made JRPGs (e.g. the South Park RPGs), as well as Japan-made western RPGs (e.g. Dark Souls). From what I can tell, the main difference is that the typical JRPG (such as Final Fantasy) focuses on teamwork; experiencing a story about/around a party of people, each with their strengths and weaknesses that complement and cover each other to make the party bigger than the sum of its parts. The classic western RPG (like Fallout 1&2) focuses much more on the singular hero, defying the world all on his own, overcoming challenges through his own wit and might.

I feel like they way you (and also others, notably Tim Rogers from Kotaku) describe this series is making me think that I've been trying to enjoy this game series in the wrong way.

1. DQ5 as well, though I'm playing through them all so who knows how 8 or 11 might stand for me. 2. Any Metroidvania really, but I suppose Metroid if I have to be more specific. 3. Mario RPGs 4. Japanese, easily. Western RPGs have almost never really appealed to me. 5. Slime <3 I played the (actually quite good) mobile versions of a lot of these, so my rating might be weird. (Haven't finished 8-11 yet) #8: DQ VII, #7: DQ I, #6: DQ II, #5: DQ III, #4: DQ VI, #3: DQ Builders, #2: DQ IV, #1: DQ V
