Man, good question. I believe the soundtrack is finally catching on, but poor Plok. Plok kicked a lot of ass. The first few levels are a little slow, but it really turns into a such a weird, creative, blast of a game.

This is still undeniably one of the hardest platformers I have ever played, but the soundtrack keeps me coming back to it, not to mention the outright difficult bosses and level design. It's ironic that my mother only bought me two games for the system after my parents divorced, both picked from the discount bin at the video store, both games composed by Tim and Geoff Follin, and both considered relative failures on the system, yet both games share an amazing soundtrack. Although Plok is leaps and bounds a better game than Spiderman and X-Men in Arcade's Revenge

Tim Follin = Absolute bad ass. Never heard this before until today. He put his heart and soul into an otherwise very average video game. His audio work is nothing short of genius.

Plok was a great game in my opinion. Very well made.
The game was good enough for Nintendo to almost pick it up and publish it. Miyamoto also took inspiration from Plok when he made Yoshi's Island.

This is why I love Tim Follin.
I love how much progressive influences you can find in this. 3m10 onward for instance is 100% King Crimson inspired. It"s no way near as dark but the way the song climbs up then explodes is typical. 2m38 reminds me of their mellotron solos too. I'm glad I grew up with the SNES... those were the best times.
It's got calm chords and string synth pads aplenty, I love it!

It's some kind of string/pad instrument.
It really sounds like a synthetic MelloTron, an instrument from the 60s/70s, which has been used by many bands, especially those bands, from which Tim Follin got his inspirations.

This sounds more like Gentle Giant than Genesis. Maybe portions of Selling England-era Genesis (like on "Cinema Show" and "Firth of Fifth"), but this sounds much more like the Power and the Glory, In a Glass House and Free Hand had a baby and it was being played on a SNES. Portions also sound like Mental Notes-era Split Enz (specifically the longer songs, i.e. "Stranger Than Fiction," "Under the Wheel"), H to He-era VdGG, and Camel during the Mirage days. I keep hearing some Cardiacs influence, but I don't know what specifically. Maybe their slower and less erratic works?
Tim's early Jethro Tull influences can be heard in this track too, I think of "Living In The Past" (the bass line e.g..) though that was in 5/4
Hal that may be but the climaxes of the song are 100% Tony Banks sounding. 0:55 - 1:24 and 3:18 - 3:36 as a couple examples are more late 70s Tony writing than.... most anything I've ever heard. Like Wind and Wuthering... (which I already mentioned... I hope you've heard that record) and A Curious Feeling in particular. Parts of And Then There Were Three as well. Also his piece "Submarine" from the 80s. But yeah honestly actually I see how you could feel Gentle Giant for everything besides those bits. And Dennis hell yeah I feel that!

@coffee is a drug I hadn't really thought of that -- never cared for Camel myself, especially post-Moonmadness, but you're right, that structure is definitely referenced here. However, I still maintain that Soft Machine's "Out-Bloody-Rageous" is referenced too.
I feel lucky to have enjoyed such great music while i was so young. games like plok exposed me to such awesome music before i knew it. now i see modern music through this light, and soundtracks like this are just so much richer.

Definitely. Tim Follin's C64 stuff also has that style to it. Especially in the voicings used in rhythmic passages with that classical score like ebb and flow to the timing and entrance just like this song has.

I remember playing this as a kid and recalling how great the soundtrack was, it was definitely ahead of its time in terms of progressive music on a video game console, I don't think too many people got to appreciate it since either they were too busy playing the game or never played it at all. This was during a time when VGM just wasn't appreciated like it is now, with the internet being able to reach out and show more people.
What a nice track! Hypnotizing and quite psychedelic. It's effectively progressive rock, yet "videogamish" enough to appeal even to little kids. And those who like prog rock, folk rock and trance can all find a reason to enjoy it. I can hear some Jean Michel Jarre, and the sound at 2:29 slightly reminds me of one of the songs from Terminator 2: Judgment Day for the NES (music by Geoff Follin, pretty damn awesome soundtrack if you ask me). The Follin brothers are epic!

Not really. Tim liked them, but said he wanted a stable income, so he left the VGM business forever - which is a huge shame, as he is one of the best composers to ever walk the Earth. Geoff loved games, and good music - he was Tim's main influence on both fronts. I can't recall why he quit, but I do know none of them hated videogames. Hell, if you hated the girl next door, would you learn to and then make a three story chocolate cake to give it to her? I think not. Same applies here.
