Even as kids we knew this music was special. Sure there were catchy tunes in other games at the time but this sounded like a CD. We wanted to know what kind of guitar they used or how they got actual audio tracks on a cart. This might be the highest quality music ever produced on an SNES and it's catchy too.
Maybe I've commented it before, but at a time I worked at video game store early/mid 2000s. We had loads of old-school games and upon boredom (and manager equally bored and cool we had the shop tidy) put whatever system and games on our test system side. We discovered Tim Follin one day and started seeking out his compositions. I remember walking in to Solstice on a repeat for a bit. Tim knows his shit.

Oh wow, so this is the name of one of my favorite tracks from this game, I absolutely adore this soundtrack, and proves without a shadow of a doubt that Tim is a genius and that the SNES is SUPERIOR and this is coming from a Mega Drive (Genesis) fan. When the SNES sound chip is utilized as brilliantly as this, Sega's 16 bit can only weep. In fact this soundtrack is so good, I've downloaded it to my phone.

I remember Plok being difficult and I can clearly remember the songs, but back then me and my best friend didn't appreciate the music. I'm not saying that we disliked the soundtrack, we simply didn't paid any attention to it...well, I did subconsciously as it seems. I thought this game has nice looking graphics, but now I realized that some things look pretty low budget. ...and not many cared about composers, so now I feel sorry for Tim Follin. But on the bright side, he got his credit after all. Can't make a living with it, but it seems his past works slowly gain more and more attention.

SNES used a soundprocessor...which means you don´t have to put sound-calculations on your cpu. The Soundchip in SNES was called the "SPC7000". It was made by Sony in these days (where Sony was still a music-genius!). Today Sony is no longer what i call a "music-genius" and they have given up on Soundchip-production or using their own sound-chips. Soundchips are more expensive than cpu-sounds, you have to know... Soundchips like the SPC 7000 are capable (Nintendo-consoles to also use soundchips are Gamecube, Wii, 3DS and WiiU!) of handling highest-quality MIDI-sounds (or other sounds like MP3, AAC etc) without costing any ressources on the cpu!

There are more powerful sound-chips/cards now then there were in SNES (late 1980s, early 1990s) days, dude ;) 3DS has a much faster soundprocessor allready (134 Mhz, 32 channels+!, MP3/AAC and MIDI-capable!). gamecube, which came after the N64 had better soundprocessor as well (Well, something similar than 3DS has). And the Wii and WiiU are the latest and pretty much highend- in terms of what you can get in sound-quality today! From Sony, only Playstation 1 and 2 used soundchips. They were similar as Gamecube´s soundchip. If you want to start, i recommend you program for 3DS dude. It has 134 Mhz, you can do a TON more than shown here in SNES-soundchip-days where you only had like 10 Mhz-soundchips with max. 8 channels... Not entirely true. What made Geoff and Tim different from the other composers at the time is that he used programming to make all his music, unlike other composers who used MIDI keyboards and GUIs. Him and his brother also just had one hell of an ear. Lol

One trick Tim used was to record chords as samples so they could squeeze in more notes than the SNES should be able to handle.

Unfortunately, you're all wrong. Time signature is largely just a number which the composer uses to get his or her point across. Depending on how long the phrases are, or how they sound or feel, you can say 7/4 or 7/8 -- Depending how many beats per minute the song is also affects this. As soon as the song starts, you can tick 7/8 phrases until the song turns into 4/4 @ 0:50 -- (or 7/4 if you feel more comfortable that way, or depending on how many measures there are and how you would like to arrange or divide them up)

Except the "4/4" part isn't actually 4/4 either; the last beat in each bar is only three steps long as opposed to four for the others, making it 15/16. It does briefly transition into 4/4 after that, but that's not until like 32 bars in.

If you're talking about the 4-channel sample audio, then can I just say that the SNES soundchip is literally an 8-sample MIDI player? The only "tricks" Tim used was that he programmed the music in instead of using a MIDI tracker. It didn't need any extra tricks to make sampled music.

Just in case anyone was wondering, this whole song is just based around some transposed Maj7 chords in 7/8 time. Even me (a shit guitarist) learned this fairly quickly. What makes it so rad is how the movements are. Just shows how far you can take a single chord in a song. Very brilliant work.

@Highway Guy Nah I mean playing something with an emphasis on chromatic scale like a guitar or a piano will certainly help with your ear training (Although you probably already knew that) but music theory and ability are definitely not mutually exclusive. I happen to know only a decent amount from my experience with different settings and different instruments. I mean yes if you do wind up picking up a different instrument you WILL get a new perspective on things just due to the fact that common practices and techniques for instruments are always at least a tiny bit different but I can't say it's going to help your theory knowledge for sure. I mean then again you're talking to someone who learned music very differently than your average musician. Like I can tell you a lot of stuff about theory that some people would consider adept or even advanced practices yet I can't even read music. My girlfriend who's super by the books and was in a bunch of ensembles is always laughing at me about that lol
Well a lot of people would say so but it's all about bridging the gap between your comfort zone and outside of your comfort zone. I'd say maybe acclimate in a way where it's not something completely different so you're not totally lost. I've been in that position a bunch of times and it's super discouraging. Like I hope that helps. If you have any other questions on specifics or whatever feel free to ask!

Lone Wolf Thing is, it's the composer's fault for producing such bad music and Doom's case was much worse. They used GEMS for the music, which is awful for making Genesis music. +dogen It really can't. It's sample rate is only 32kHz, so even if you had unlimited cartridge space and used the 'streaming' method used by Motoi Sakuraba in Tales of Phantasia (where you continuously swap the samples loaded in the SPC700s RAM), you still can't get CD quality audio.

And you can't say you wouldn't expect this to be on a Playstation or N64 instead of on a freaking SNES with how clean it sounds.

Surely with so many examples of SNES music sounding great, there is no surprise? And I can say that I wouldn't expect it to be on a Playstation or N64 as those had much more technically advanced sound chips (and the PSX could also use CD audio). This sounds like SNES music, admittedly played on an emulator using a much higher sample rate than the SNES actually used.

It's still very well put together, especially given that Mr. Follin only used 6 channels, but still. Usually SNES emulators make the sound clearer than the real system, where as with the Genesis, they often forget about filtering the high frequency noise that comes in games like Thunder Force IV, which is always filtered on a real system. This is leading even more people to believe that the Genesis sound is shit. No, bad composers, audio drivers, and emulators make some of it it shit.

Exactly why the snes soundchip runs milestones over sega's, Yeah I mean there were OSTs on the genesis that pwned snes osts but at the same times not like the chips are the ones that compose the soundtracks themselves, I mean the genesis soundchip is one of my favorites as well in fact possibly tied with the snes but then you got commodore amiga ports/originals that will shit on both those soundchips in a heartbeat. Turrican on the amiga has one of my top favorite soundtracks of all time but the genesis version gives me both an ear and a head ache,
I think it depends on what you do with either. Genesis chip can do things the SNES one cannot and vice versa. It is what you do with the limitations, like Tim Follin repeatedly proves.
I think this is just Tim Follin being really talented. I bet he could get this kind of stuff out of the Genesis sound chip too.
He sure did. Time Trax is what he did on Genesis and it is awesome; the man is incredible. Point being, the Genesis chip in itself was limited by the folks who made music for it, many of which never got to know the chip properly like Follin did. It's a good sound chip and underrated. SNES and Genesis' chips did different things anyhow. They used very different technologies. Genesis used FM, SNES used Wavetable. Wavetable takes PCM samples and plays them all back at different pitches. FM builds soundwaves from scratch using math. It was difficult, but possible, to create realistic effects, but it was more common at the time the Genesis was new. As for the SPC700 chip, that was bleeding edge and a gamble for Nintendo. Both were suited to certain sounds; Genesis to rock, SNES to orchestral. I will say that in general, the SPC700 is better for soft strings.

It can, but SNES can sound MIDI-ish itself. Then we have some pretty nice things on Genesis also. Both systems are capable of making nice sounds.
You see it depended more on the Composers then the soundchip, I can tell you easily the Ost for Vigilante 8 was better then the psx on the 64 which used a format that was far lower performing then the cd's when it came to multimedia in general (cartridges). Composers basically had to change the whole song to fit it on each of the different soundchips since they were differently abled then eachother.
Definitely and I agree with Joey. I do know there was a lot of confusion from companies and such on how to compose for the Genesis chip in general because of some reason that's listed someplace, but like any form of chip, there are folks who know how to work with any limitation and strengths to make it sound unique and awesome. In some ways a soundchip's tech can make an impact, but a lot of it may even have to do with budget and porting. Either way, the chip for SNES and Genesis did some different things and are like apples and oranges for a true comparison.
It's a great, well-composed soundtrack that circumvents the problems most snes music tends to have. Though I don't think it matches the best the genesis had to offer. Thunderforce IV, MUSHA, Streets of Rage, Gunstar Heroes... etc...
+Isaias Classen MIDI doesn't sound, it's just music information. the MD does FM synthesis whilst the SFC/SNES does its ROMPLER stuff. so in fact the MD is a real synth, whilst the SNES mostly does digital playback (samples), like the amiga did.
Snes always sound better because you can make your own samples for it and more sound channels, also Tim Follin is a VGM God and can make a buzzer sound like a professional keyboard.

@H.F Gaming True, but you can also build your own waveforms with an FM chip like the Genesis has through careful manipulation of the operators. The FM chips are primarily limited by skill, and the sampling chips like the SNES are limited by a the combination of storage space and skill.
@Brett Bates The samples on SNES always sound murky after sound processing and I still have no idea how Follin was able to accomplish this. This theme sounds like CD-quality music. But I think it was smart to make a chord into a single sample due to the channel limitations, (even though it probably wouldnt matter since he only used 5 of the 8 SPC-700 channels) but he probably saved 3 for stuff like SFX.

Well, hate to burst your bubble PLOK fans, but he will NEVER be on Smash for 2 reasons: 1. He is an British game character created by the British Studio, Software Creations for long defunct Tradewest. Super Smash Bros. ONLY uses Japanese game characters. 2 (this ties in with reason one some what) Software Creations and Tradewest no longer exist. They both declared bankruptcy, unless there is someone from the two companies who share the license to the game today.
The Pickford brothers, who are the original creators of the Plok character and the game, still have the rights to the character and make use of him until this very day, so this kills the "company and character are dead" reason.
While smash has never used a character from outside japan. There's no rule against it.
oh yeah also miyamoto has been confirmed to have been related with plok's development (though im pretty sure the "miyamoto didn't believe plok's music was through a unmodded snes" myth was debunked) so that adds to the thing

@Jesse Humphry this is simple 7/8 to 8/8, the transition is at 0:50. it's sudden. tempo also changes. what's weirder is that at 1:51 time signature changed to 9/8 for just a single bar. then, it goes back to 8/8 (4/4) again.
I think it was probably the tempo change that messed me up.
++TEK Actually I'm pretty sure it's pure 4/4 from the transition until the next 7/8, but you have to think the snares on 2 and 4. Then the bar before the transition sounds like 15/16 to get the first "early downbeat" determining the rest of the groove.

Crystasorrow Donkey Kong Country, Final Fantasy and Super Metroid are the only 3 games in your list that legitimately sound good, Starfox, while catchy, sound like your average SNES game and doesn't take advantage of the Sony SPC700 like this brilliantly done soundtrack does.

Brain Trope I've seen this guy on various comment sections about music. Apparently, his views on Mega Drive and especially SNES music are pretty strict. If a MD OST was composed with GEMS or Sound Images, chances are that he'll dislike it for its instrument choices (Unless it was used well). Same for the SNES if it uses generic brass samples (I'm assuming the brass used in Desert Strike did not help his view on ALttP and EarthBound's OST that much, considering they use the same ones), muffled/weak bass sounds, or what I'd like to call, "squealing". I can't help but understand his point about it as well, as he clearly heard a lot of fantastic MD & SNES OSTs (Gauntlet IV, Super Aleste, Adventures of Batman and Robin (MD version), this game, etc), but still.

Yeah. It's a modern game developed as a sort of love letter to old NES style games, complete with a rough-around-the-edges pixel art style and chiptune music by Jake Kaufman. Reviews are excellent, and I'm inclined to agree with them. The soundtrack's on his bandcamp page, so check it out if you have the time.

The middle part of course is 4/4 (just the beat makes it seem strange, but it's constant if you time it) making the song 7/8 to 4/4, and back to 7/8 before looping to the first 7/8 again. This song... is fucking.... GENIUS.

This is really interesting: stylistically, it's much closer to what you'd generally expect out of the YM2612 in the Genesis, but it's undoubtedly playing off of the SPC!

@dandantrashcan I'm 14 and I know about them. Hell, I spend more time on my SNES, Genesis, N64, and Playstation than on my 360 or Wii. Although, I do thoroughly enjoy playing those as well.

This game had brilliant music, but to be honest that was probably its best feature. It was a good game, but boy was it hard, and it had no way to save progress, not even and old-skool password system. You had to be pretty hardcore (and have quite a bit of time spare) to be able to complete it in a single sitting.
It's funny; I really liked this game as a kid (though the length and lack of password or save was annoying), and the music is fantastic, but nowadays, I just can't get into it.

@Daandude1 Great idea. If I ever have kids I'll be sure to do the same. Part of the reason gaming has become so simplified is because of the influx of console consumers--both kids and casuals looking for a quick run of excitement, not wanting to think or immerse themselves. And although it's nice to see more and more people become interested in gaming, people should at least play and respect older games as well. Hell, I'm selling my 360 and switching to PC gaming & emulation.
@Earo16 That's why i'm letting my son play on my snes. He actually enjoys playing SNES more then my xbox 360. But yeah alot of the newer generation grows up in a video game market that is leaning more towards simple games. Instead of original ideas. The rule has now become the exception, and that's a shame.

Hell, most of my friends have played a lot of older games, or at least acknowledge how great some are. But it really disheartens me to see someone not know what, say, Chrono Trigger, or System Shock are. People today only care about the next CoD.

I used to work my butt off to get to the different stages so I could just listen to the music endlessly. I wish this ST was released -- I would buy it in an instant. This vid sounds like it used an emulator for the music as the sawtooth wave sounds lack the distortion especially at 0:14 -- sounds muffled.

@PouKii the beginning does when it first starts up definitely snes, but during the middle its definitely hard to tell if you don't know the follins.
@SwerdMurd Ah! So I'm not crazy. Although I think only the beginning in slow, can't really say that the middle parts are as slow the second time around, or even altered at all.
@Aperrentis it is slower--it starts out at X tempo, drops back a bit prior to the minute mark (for that kick-ass breakdown) and I don't think it speeds back up when it loops. Try jumping back 2ish minutes (abruptly) once the second loop starts to the comparable point the first time through--it's definitely slower the second time
why isn't this on virtual console? Hell I'd buy it again....one of my favorite platformers ever. @metalictempest - it was a pretty large cart--they allocated way more space than average to sample fidelity--you can still hear the 8-channel-restriction (listen to the hats--they don't ring). Beautiful, beautiful music though.

I love Plok. Not just because of the awesome gameplay and incredible music. The nostalgia value is also through the roof. This was the first video game I ever bought for myself with my own money. My savings from my 7th birthday :)

When I bough this game in Chile it was on disscount, I´ve never heard about it, and when i started to play it the first thing i noticed was the awesome music for a snes game. All of my friends were looking for this catridge in stores but i think it was one of the few copies that landed in my country xD. Nowdays we always remember this tracks and also we have the mp3's of Plok, and we laugh about how a snes game could have such a nice music xD. PD: sorry about my english hehe

This has got to be one of the best unknown games ever. Awesome platforming levels, the costumes, the vehicles and specially the music. Sucks that no one ever knows what i'm talking about when i mention this gem, i'm glad there's some people scattered around that recognize it for what it is, an awesome game.

Man, it came as such a surprise to me to play this obscure game and to hear such memorable, almost striking tunes. The music certainly made that game.
Both games were soundtracked by Tim Follin. He's definitely got a distinctive style.

Well, a vocal minority complain that it was too easy, much in the same vein as people that complain about Viewtiful Joe being too easy. For mere mortals like me, though, it was much too difficult. It's still an impressive game though.

The Follins really knew how to play with the SPC700 chip in the SNES. They took the 8 channel limit and made it sound like 13-15 channels were playing at once.. That's what I love about the soundtrack in this game.
