2018 truly is the year of the Metroidvanias, so many came out and most of them are extremely solid. I can't complain, it's one of my very favorite genres and I can't seem to get tired of it. I like seeing how the developers can give us unique ideas surrounding the genre's proven mold. Out of all the ones I played this year, Timespinner is the least unique but it doesn't end up hurting it: it's basically a light mix of Castlevania SOTN and Order of Ecclesia. They don't even try to hide it with the menu, the familiars, the passive relics, etc. It took me about 8 hours to 100% it and enjoyed it the whole way through. The different orbs that act as your weapons are nice to play around with and the variety is good enough that players probably each have their own personal favorites. The familiars are mostly useless however, as well as the Timestop mechanic which should have been a central part of the gameplay. Still, an overall very enjoyable and nostalgic Metroidvania, including one of my favorite soundtracks of the year. It's crazy how close Jeff Ball got to Yamane's style. This track may be my favorite and feels straight out of Order of Ecclesia.

What is (are) the closest Metroidvania to SotN and the Castlevanias on the DS?

Chasm and Timespinner are extremely similar to those but they aren't very good unfortunately. If you can expand your choices into the metroidvania genre, you should look into Hollow Knight which is an indie masterpiece. Coming out in the future and closer to what you're looking for are Bloodstained Ritual of the Night (literally made by the same game designer for SotN and the NDS Castlevania), and also Heart Forth Alicia.

@Grobzoula Yeah I'm following bloodstained and can't wait for it. Strange how nothing comes near SotN or even the ones on DS. Replayed all 3 DS Castlevanias and they are still as good as a remember. SotN is just a masterpiece, only annoying thing about it is music pausing in menu.

You're one of the very few people that say this game is like Order of Ecclesia. Everyone else keeps saying Symphony of the Night. I'm guessing all the people that review this game never played OoE before.

this game will scratch that metroidvania itch but its honestly pretty disappointing with how little they use the mechanics that are introduced early on. also there seriously needs to be a difficulty mode that's in-between normal (aka way too easy) and nightmare mode (which is basically OoE's level 1 hard mode on crack), still fun though

I didn't give nightmare mode a try because I ended up fed up by the game after beating it once, but it seems interesting if you say it's harder than OoE's hard mode which was already insane.

This game is pretty good so far. I'm glad I backed it. I'll finish it later. Also, this song was my favorite so far.

I personally loved this game more than hollow knight, the other big metroidvania I played this year. I believe it really has to do with how amazing this soundtrack is to me. The homage to Yamane is so good
