Not to rag on about the game because you've probrably arlready hear it and then some. But it all honestly, one factor is just adoreded about this Zelda not only did open world with purpose and meaning in the world itself, but also its emphasis on the freedom to explore and adventure the way the player wanted too.

So many divided opinions on this game. As someone who grew up with the NES and played the original Legend of Zelda when I was a kid, I see this as a return to form. It goes back to the open world and freedom of the very first game, along with making enemies challenging again, and having a big focus on the overworld (although if you knew where to go, you did spend the majority of the first game in the dungeons/underworld). I also felt that the 3D Zelda games had been getting really stale for me while also moving away from what I liked about the series initially. Fetch quests, lots of "do this, then that, then that, in this order, in order to go to this location", blocking off chunks of the world until the correct item is obtained or dungeon is beaten, and dungeons that take hours to beat. To me, Breath of the Wild is a massive breath of fresh air. I've poured over 300 hours between three save games (I'm currently on my third), and not even Skyrim (the last open world game I played before this one) did that for me. I loved exploring its world, I had a lot of fun with the new combat system, the breaking weapons actually made me really try out and appreciate the weapon variety and made finding new weapon types more special, and I loved the sheer amount of things you could do such as hijacking and riding a deer, setting things on fire, using magic (the runes) in creative ways and so much more. I do feel it has its flaws. Like balance - once you play long enough, you can become overpowered. As Supra said, the shrines and divine beasts are not separately themed. The lack of enemy variety never bothered me, but it really could use more enemy types, now that I think about it. And the density of the world itself varies - sometimes it's super dense and you find a lot of interesting things going on in a short period of time, while other times you can travel for a long time and it takes a while to find something of interest. The world should have been more dense, imo, but I dealt with it. That said, this game brought back the feeling of exploration and danger and mystery that the very first game had in my childhood, but with many more added things on top of it, like the sheer beauty of many of the awesome looking locations - something the NES could have never pulled off. The game is a bit slow (especially compared to the fast pace of Super Mario Odyssey), but I think it accomplishes a lot, and I love the experience.
Daytime Sky Honestly it just feels like an unfinished game to me. I'm not sure why I feel so different compared to other people but I played it and just eventually felt... "that's it?" Low enemy diversity, boss fights, etc. It feels like the map might as well be randomly generated with how everything is, and I would have appreciated it a lot more. I just feel stuff like windwaker should completely overshadow this. One thing is was going to say is I thought this was a lot easier than other zeldas, not harder, which I thought might be appeal of it.

this games' audio/ost is severely underrated

This game was a major disappointment for me, unfortunately. It lacks any character. The music was weak, there were no interesting characters, and the story was hardly existent. The gameplay was good for the first few hours, sure, but the durability and cooking systems quickly annoyed me. I miss old Zelda dungeons, too. The shrines and divine beasts were all such shit shows. Zelda has been my favorite franchise for virtually my entire gaming career, but if this is any indication of the direction it’s going, that will surely change. :/

Edeon Saint I’ve already seen it. I don’t think it’s a matter of genre. I think the music is genuinely weak regardless of how it compares to other Zelda games. The fact that it is less apparent is more of a blessing than anything. The blank space motif in the music also really just emphasizes how empty the game feels.
I'm gonna have to disagree with the characters and story. This game has some of my favorite characters in the series and a really bittersweet story. Just because the game doesn't bombard you with cutscenes everywhere you go doesn't mean that the story isn't there.
Hawelo92 The problem is that the only story is found in those optional cutscenes. You never learn anything through the environment (“oh gosh, another guardian just sticking out of the ground! How intriguing!”) or bits of optional lore (except in the case of a few diaries that are actually quite good!). Sidequests have quite literally no narrative value. Any but the characters that make up the 12 (13? 16? I don’t remember) memories and the handful of uninteresting characters you meet for the divine beasts are virtually placeholders. Oh, Kass is a bit interesting, I suppose. The few characters that I’m supposed to like didn’t click with me, either. That young Goron and Riju felt pretty trope-y, for example. Otherwise, what’s left? Sidon? Meh...
lol, dude you couldn't have a more wrong opinion! The BotW overworld is absolutely filled and teeming with life and adventure, far more so than the dead world of Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword. BotW has the best overworld of any Zelda game, and is far more fun to roam and explore in. Also, the music is on par with the rest of the Zelda series and is absolutely beautiful to listen to. The story was fine. There doesn't need to be a Zelda game filled with 90% cutenesses. The amount of story in Zelda 1 was good enough, and the amount of story in BotW is also just as good enough. I'd rather Nintendo put story as far back behind everything else as possible because devs rarely make good stories anyway, and if they do, the entire game has to be molded around that specific story and makes the game very limiting to both the dev and the player. For an open world exploration game like Zelda, and for the amount of freedom given to the player (where you can go straight to Hyrule Castle and fight Ganon from the very beginning), there needed to be as little story as possible so it wouldn't bog the game down and limit player's options and freedoms.
I agree with your description Supra. I feel Breath of the Wild is the new Ocarina of Time. Despite the majority opinion, it is not a perfect game, however it laid down a new template for Zelda games to follow. And the preceding Zelda titles would only get better and better (From Majora's Mask to Wind Waker to Twilight Princess, the OoT Template had a pretty good run). So in other words, Zelda can only get even better from here. And that makes us all excited. :)
Indeed! I really hope Nintendo listens not only to the reviews that gave Zelda 10/10, but also on smaller reviews and on its fans. It makes me happy that Nintendo finally starts to listen to their fans. For example did they patch a Japanese voice pack for BotW, and they released a Japanese voice pack for Xenoblade 2 upon its launch. They are also creating new Metroid games, which fans have been wanting for years. I hope continue in this direction.
Never did get into this game. Was too hard for me and am not a fan of durability for weapons in any game. Finished and cleared the tutorial island area place and was ready to glide out of it, but just never picked up the game again. Looks pretty, but the difficulty, durability for weapons, and lack of loud zelda music for zones that always made it memorable was just a miss for me
Atanos Iskandar It gets much easier later on, and the game gets much better too. I'd recommend giving it longer than an hour's chance because you barely finished the tutorial.
Someday i'm sure i will. Also played it on the WiiU and hated using the wii U controller.. just overall did not enjoy my time with it lol
Atanos Iskandar Buy yourself a Wii U Pro controller and give the game some time and you'll very likely find that you get into it. Worst case scenario is that you don't but it won't hurt to try. People are calling it one of the greatest video games of all time for a reason :)
Aye I hear ya. I'm sure its a great game, but weapon durability is a big hit for me in any game. Just personal preference. And zelda music is important to me. Having the loud, iconic themes MAKE the zones I'm in is important to me. Quiet atmospheric music is beyond beautiful and pretty to listen to, as it is in every game ever. The controller is a good idea. I do plan to, if I ever get the chance to, buy a switch and get the game on there.
The weapon durability becomes less of an issue later on, you get more inventory space and also better durability items and eventually almost a god weapon if you got the DLC packs.
That makes Super Mario Odyssey #1 at a guess, honestly 2017 was Nintendo's year.
To me the biggest thing not just for Zelda but all gaming BotW added was climbing everything. Every other aspect has been done before in one form or another, but where most open world games tell you "See that mountain in the distance? You can walk there!" BotW tells me "See that mountain in the distance? You can or glide there, and then CLIMB IT." It's honestly extremely difficult for me to go back to any other open world game now, knowing I can't climb literally everything. The closest is Just Cause but it's not quite the same. I would have no qualms with everyone stealing said mechanic and putting it in everything. Climbing is the best.
Honestly, I don't have much more to say than what you have probably heard so many times already (edit: incoming wall of text, so ignore that actually). Nintendo calling this an "open-air" experience makes so much sense once you play it. Link went from being stuck to the ground to having more freedom in his movements than 99% of the characters you play as in other games, including open-world games. Being able to climb pretty much everything had to be a core element right from the start of development, but to me it's the early access to the paraglider that made this experience so enjoyable. There's nothing quite like the feeling you get when you jump from a high mountain and glide along while looking down at the amazing world Nintendo has created. And most of time, anywhere you look, you will find something that will make you want to go there. The world itself and the freedom of movement is by far my highlights of this game. I don't want to focus too much on the negatives, but I do think BOTW is far from perfect. The lack of dungeons and all the shrines feeling the same because of their aesthetics are probably my biggest disapointments. Funnily enough, even if it has been criticized, I did like the combat system with the weapons breaking. Rarely has a game made me play around with various weapons like this one, simply because they kept breaking. Normally, I would find a weapon type I really like and stick with it. Managing your weapons (and items in general) definitely could have been done better. Is this my favorite Zelda ever? No, it's not. And part of me believes that the next game in the series will take the best of BOTW and fix a lot of problems it had (and dungeons please? each with their theme?). If that happens, that game might take the crown as my favorite Zelda of all time. BOTW laid down a new template for this franchise and I couldn't be more excited for its future.
Yeah i do agree with the criticism. Personally i really disliked the fact that most of the items you collect in the overworld get boring and stale too over time. All there is is gems, vegetables and critters along with the occasional korok seeds Also too many boring repetitive and similar enemies everywhere, not enough variety. Let's be honest it's quite a boring overworld.. a bit too big to be great. Also it needs much more music variety. The overal music kinda sucked/ or lack of tbh.
I was really sad about the lack of dungeons, but the world felt like a dungeon at times too. I still think there is room for the game to improve like you said, but I will admit that I was blown away by it.

Very fair analysis, and I totally agree with you. Most of the game was amazing, but the lack of themed dungeons was really a shame. Also, as cool as all the powers were, and having them early, I missed the revelatory moments of getting a new item in a dungeon and having everything in the dungeon put in a new context. It was wonderful in past games to discover what new possibilities opened up once you found the dungeon item. It was cool to be able to do anything in BotW if you had the knowhow, but I don't think there's anything wrong with making it Metroidvania-esque and returning to areas once you have new items. I also wished there was more enemy variety, but that was a smaller complaint.
I also liked the weapon system. The game was clearly designed for it imo. You gain weapons all over the place, and they break in turn quite fast. I never had a fear of running out of weapons, and I didn't save the best ones either. I think that is the mistake many people do. They save super strong weapons and they don't wanna see them break. As for dungeon themes, every dungeon (not counting shrines) has their own theme. I honestly think these are some of the better dungeon themes I've heard in a long time. They really help create a really cool atmosphere. Also, great choice! I always went to Hateno for no reason just so I could listen to this beautiful track.
My biggest gripe honestly was that the final boss was underwhelming to say the least. all that build up to at best a decent fight and then a second phase that was just shooting targets with arrows. I know its been overdone, but i just wanted a duel with Ganondorf at the end. I always felt that was a satisfying way to end the zelda games.
