Late, relaxing upload! It's 2017 and I'm still not sure why Sony never expanded on this franchise. The game sold extremely well, has a cult following and has a lot of potential around the dragoons story/mechanic. We got the FF7 remake and Shenmue 3... now we want LoD2. And Mother 3 in english. And Mother 4. And Half-Life 3. And Shadow Hearts 4. And...
My only guess as to why this game never really took off is because it was released around the same time as other big name games, namely Final Fantasy 9, Diablo 2, Grandia 2, etc. That was a great year for gaming. I also think a lot of people never gave it a chance, which is a shame because it has A LOT going for it, great music is just the cherry on top. I know if they ever did a remake, or full on sequel, I would probably break my rule and preorder it ASAP.

It was released around FF8 which by that time was a very hype franchise so it kinda got overshadowed. Plus it was by the end of PS1 era and people kinda moved on to PS2. Too bad indeed cause it is really a gem with great story and music and graphics are not that bad either. Pretty sure with a remake or sequel right now it would got a lot of attention.

It sold well but I remember critics didn't give it the best of scores. I'd love a sequel! The combat system was great!
I can't help but think of Kain Highwind whenever I see that title.

Still probably the worst PS1 RPG I ever played. The reason why the game never got a sequel is because it sucked. Valkyrie Profile, Final Fantasy IX, Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story, Persona 2, Lunar 2, Breath of Fire IV, Wild Arms 2, Front Mission 3: those are all better RPGs for the PS1 that came out in North America the same year that Legend of Dragoon did. I'm not sure how well Legend of Dragoon holds up, but it sure was awful next to its contemporaries when we were getting good RPGs all the time back in 2000, and I'll never understand the nostalgia people have for it. That said, nothing wrong with this track.

Nope. I really dislike this game. I'm sure there are plenty of worse PS1 RPGs, as it's not as if I played anywhere near all of them, and I've intentionally avoided games that are supposed to be bad like Beyond the Beyond.
Why though? You never elaborate on how it is the worst and how it sucked. Is it the story? Gameplay? Music?
Gameplay and story are dull, so the game isn't fun. I'll mention again that I think it's the worst of the RPGs I've played on the PS1, but I haven't played all of them (I've played about 25 or so). In any case, it's more that I just think the other RPGs on the system are flat-out better for whatever reason; the PS1 has an incredibly strong library of RPGs, so this game doesn't stand out at all on the system. In contrast, if Legend of Dragoon had came out on the N64 the same as it was, it would've been like the second or third-best RPG for that system, since the N64 had an incredibly weak library of RPGs (it has Paper Mario and that's about it, unless you count Zelda games as RPGs, which I don't).
Oh well. I guess its your preference in games. But the game is loved by many, including myself. For me the gameplay was unique and challenging as the additions make it so that players stay attentive during battles so it doesn't get boring. Story was nice for me as well. I like how they put little details like honoring Lavitz's request for a drink when everything is over at Lohan (shown at the ending scene with a glass of beer beside Lavitz's photo). Although I would love if they elaborate more on the story of the Dragon Campaign. It'd be the perfect prequel tbh.
It's a shame he really doesn't really go into detail regarding what he thought was wrong with the game, just one or two bland statements that doesn't explain anything. I was surprized to see how a semi-lengthy post could manage to contain such little detail. For what it's worth when I first played this game I didn't like it much either. I got up to the prison part in the beginning of the game and ditched it, I just wasn't interested for reasons I can't quite articulate. However I picked up the game a year or two later and ended up loving it. Played it again a few years later and still loved it. A few negative things I will say about the game: Most of the voice acting from what I recall is pretty bad. Not having an open world map compared to most RPGs having one also made it feel a lot more restricting. Some of the tracks were bad, I don't recall liking the final boss's track much when normally the final boss of a game tends to have one of the best tracks. Inventory was also an issue, but apparently only the NA version of this game had the issue; apparently the Japanese version allowed you to double your inventory slots at some point. That was mainly it, I think. Probably my favorite part about the game was the gameplay, it added an element of skill and creativity instead of just pressing the Attack command and watching my character do a bland slash. FF8 did something similar with Squall, but the series never expanded on this at all, making the most common command the most bland and worthless command in all of Final Fantasy.
There's not much for me to say. I only played the game for a few hours over ten years ago. I could go back and finish it, but I have no interest in doing so when there's so many other games I'd rather play instead.
Ahh, it sounds really similar to my situation, except I went back and finished it. Funny, If I never did I'd be right here agreeing with you 100%. It's funny to see how that works out.
Playing an RPG for a few hours is nothing, I'm surprised you can make such a strong statement (one of the worst RPGs in PSX) based on that little time you spent with the game. Like, you know nothing about the story as a whole, so you can't really judge it for it.
Just that I totally lost interest in it because I disliked both the story and gameplay, while I've finished most PS1 RPGs, put the game well below all the other ones I've played, which I could often push myself to finish even if I didn't especially like them. I think the fact that it's been so long since I played it, and my memories of the game are so faint, is more of an issue right now for me to judge it.

Just finished playing through this game again for the 2nd time. Decent game, but the PS1 has a lot of better RPGs. The translation is really bad, the music is meh (aside from Royal Castle), and the characters aren't very balanced. The addition system was unique, though.
Final Fantasy 7, 8, & 9, and Final Fantasy Tactics are some of the best on the system, IMO. Chrono Cross is another great one, and has the best video game soundtrack ever made. Xenogears was also good. I liked Saga Frontier 2 a whole lot, though it's hard to understand, and not for everyone. Suikoden II is popular, though I've never played it. Legend of Mana is fun. Legend of Legaia, Legend of Dragoon and Vandal Hearts were okay. Alundra is unique and decent, but also incredibly hard. A lot of people like Tactics Ogre, though I thought it was mediocre. Same for Valkyrie Profile.

I like FFT more than LoD but the balance is *insanely* bad, what are you talking about. The translation there is also jank... really just the music, customization and (sort of) the story that makes it.
Like any of you basement nerds know about balance.
I mean, it's not really hard to figure out for FFT. The entire charge system is barely/not usable at higher levels, and skills that let you alter your stats (yell spam + accumulate or modifying brave/faith) are overpowered and game breaking. Uncalled for with the "basement nerds" though.
