Xenogears is one of the best JRPG's ever made. To me, it's sort of the inverse of Final Fantasy VII. Final Fantasy VII had awesome game mechanics with an okay story and a few weak characters. Xenogears has a ton of really interesting characters with an interesting story, but repetitive and largely unsophisticated gameplay. That gear-fighting minigame is boss, though.
Xenogears actually almost was the story behind FF7-it was a little too religious and dark, ironically for FF to pick it up.
I played through this game a few weeks ago and its story and characters are stellar.. to say the least. Its gameplay got really monotone, and even more so when in a gear (not the minigame). Though I don't care so much about monotone battle systems in older jrpgs since I usually play them for the story. However, I found its level design to be quite bad tbh. A dungeon was too many times just a cluster of straight corridors and I still wonder what sick f*** would mix turn based battles with platforming. I've never fallen so many times off a cliff just because a battle is about to start which makes me unable to jump for 0.3 seconds or so. AAAaaarrrggh rage... I just needed to get that out from my system. My experience with Xenogears was a rollercoster of feelings. It feels like half of the time I didn't enjoy it because I was exploring one of its badly designed dungeons, and the other half of the time I enjoyed reading its well written dialogue as well as experiencing its beautiful yet complex story. Xenogear's characters, dialogue and story are so good that it saves the game from being bad. It probably makes the game really good despite what I would call bad level design. Sorry for sharing my negativity of this game, but although I find some parts lacking, it's a good game. There's no denying that!

It's not often you're met with a good courtesy when saying something negative on Internet. :) As I said I don't think of Xenogears as a bad game, and there were many parts of the game that I was very fascinated about. It may have had downs, but I really enjoyed playing through this massive games since it was an experience unlike any other out there.
I love how you were in such a Yasunori Mitsuda mood over the past three uploads, and it's interesting how those three songs in the three games all have similarities. That's really neat! As someone who loves Yasunori Mitsuda's work, you'd think I'd pick up on the similarities more easily (well... at the very least, I can pick up similarities between songs in Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, but... well... it's not surprising to find similarities). Anyway, back to Xenogears: I remember trying to play Xenogears (only got to the prison complex in Disc 1 and stopped, as I felt like the game came to a screeching halt in terms of pacing), but I remember running around in the Yggdrasil. Just seeing your character as a tiny speck running around in the Yggdrasil while you can see the Gears towering over everyone. Was this also the song that played when you had that one conversation while teacups started floating? :P

+WhiteTigerShiro I'm referring to Xenogears, Chrono Trigger and Mario Party. Watch the 3 most recent videos that SupraDarky posted, they purposefully uploaded them consecutively because they're all composed by Mitsuda and are strikingly similar.

Wait Mitsuda, again?! Alright, this is the last one, but once again when I played this game I couldn't help but think of Guardia Castle while I was inside the Yggdrasil because of the percussions. I like the "Bonds of Sea and Fire" part in the theme, but I remember thinking it played too much, especially since you spend quite some time during the game inside the Yggdrasil.

+SupraDarky There is no such thing as "too much Mitsuda". Especially when you're pulling from the PS-X era.
