Great selection! I absolutely adore this game's music and ambiance! I hadn't had this kind of haunting, complete immersion in a game since the original Metroid or King's Field.
Oh my god, THIS song!!!!! Best possible choice. This is the most memorable one for me too. Also, did you mess around with bass/treble settings? I'm noticing subtle instrumental details I didn't notice before. I love it! I've never heard the song sound this good before.
You should give Environmental Station Alpha a chance if you haven't yet. Much moodier music, and does everything Axiom Verge tried to do but better and without the superfluous weapon overload. Also has a way better grapple mechanic. It's also by a single person.

environmental station alpha is unplayable after playing axiom. it just feels too inferior in comparison. environmental station alpha should be played first.
As a huge Metroid fan, I was extremely hyped for this game when it was announced. While it didn't completely meet my lofty expections, I still had a blast playing it. The HD pixel graphics are super impressive, smooth and vibrant. The soundtrack is quite unique and well composed, though I only found a couple themes truly memorable. The sound effects are top notch. The weapon variety is huge, but unfortunately 80% of the guns feel completely useless. The atmosphere is a highlight and the world is very big. Some mechanics like teleporting through walls simply feel awesome to use. But there were definitely some negatives for me: the controls could be better (a higher jump is never as good as a double jump, the grappling hook is hard to master until you don't even need it anymore, shooting the gun in the right direction can feel clumsy), the huge map has no teleportation system and has too many vertical corridors. A lot of corridors in general feel completely empty, as if it took too much inspiration from the first Metroid which did that due to RAM restrictions. Still, the overall package is mighty impressive especially when you know it's all made by 1 person. Oh, and another highlight is the drone you can control, loved that!
+SupraDarky To put this into another perspective I'd highly recommend Axiom Verge if you're in need of more 2D Metroid games, especially one that feels like a cross between Super Metroid, and Metroid NES.
+SupraDarky Few memorable songs, but that one is clearly one of them. Meshes so well with to story when it's first played.
+SupraDarky Check out the speedrun at AGDQ, you'll definitely enjoy it if you liked the game. Tons of cool stuff about the game is shown off, and the devs were in a Skype call with the runners while it was going on.
+SupraDarky Cellular Skies is what I feel to be the best track in the Axiom Verge soundtrack. Cellular Skies playing as you get out of the weird jungle like area, and onto the surface for the first time makes it have memorable punch, as well as it being a track that perfectly fits the environment, even if it changes from a dry, dead surface to large, rocky, snow covered mountains. Plus, them backgrounds mang. Rusalka, Vital Tide, and Phosphene, are also very good tracks that fit their areas well. Amnesia was memorable and fitting for the environment (and situation), but I feel the 4 other tracks I listed fit the exploration feel of the game much better.
