For some reason, my cousin considered this game better than the Banjo-Kazooie games.

I managed to 100% this game on a fairly recent revisit. I liked this game a lot when it first came out, but I haven't come back to it much. I'd still give it an 8/10, though. I'll never forget the first time I made it to hideout helm and had the countdown going to deactivate the machine. My friend was with me, and we were super into it.

Probably the worst Rare game on the N64. Banjo Kazooie was pushing the boundaries, but DK64 just had far too much collecting to do. The music was solid, as always, though it's also arguably the weakest among Rare N64 games.

You know what, I never even thought about it but this track definitely does have a Runescape vibe to it.
Donkey Kong 64 is a better game than most contrarian dipshit writers for Destructoid and Eurogamer make it out to be.

I loved this game as a kid. It's not as good as the banjo kazooie games, but i loved the music and levels WAY more then mario 64. UNFORTUNATELY, the game's so much of a collectathon, that i will probably never beat the game 100%. Heck, i never beat the game. BUT i did at least beat the game up to right before the final level(i lacked the final 2 keys and the blue prints to get into the final level). Maybe one day i'll finish it, in the mean time i'll listen to it's AWESOME music.
I loved this song, but it drove me crazy that those stupid cave-ins would keep interrupting it... Tiny would then beat the trash out of that guy.

Maybe it's because I've never played this myself, but I _did_ watch a Let's Play of this game. I liked some of the earlier areas of the game, and I liked the music for Crystal Caves But near the end, the collectathon-nature of the game kind of became very repetitive, and made me realize DK64 was just "Collectathon The Game" with mini-games after mini-games. I'm sure I'd get a different impression if I play the game myself. As SupraDarky said, in a world where I have too much time on my hands, I'd be down to check it out. But alas.
I feel a sensation, *expanding* within me. Thank goodness the Expansion Pak is included so that I can contain it.

I wasn't a fan of this game when it came out, but it's now on Wii U's Virtual Console so it made me check out its soundtrack again. In a world where I have too much time on my hands, I'd probably give it a second chance.

@SullivanDoesGames It's not a bad game, but I do feel it has it's issues. Especially compared to similar games like Banjo and Mario 64
I didn't like it either and probably still don't.
DK64 is a very heavily flawed game. But for some reason, I still love mindlessly wandering around in its huge levels and beating minigames with no consistency in their difficulty. It's a fun game to me even today.
I recently 101%'d this, took me around 20-25 hours. It's not bad at all if you can map the stages mentally, but if you get lost easily then boy prepare for a 50 hours game.

@SupraDarky I played the game as a kid and replayed it 2 years ago. For me it's a "Love and Hate Game". Some parts of the game are awesome, others just frustrating. The first level, the jungle, was cool. The others had nothing to do with Donkey Kong. The 4th world, the water level, was the worst. I fucking hate this stage!
@Kwyjibo Because Donkey Kong games never had levels based on ruins, factories, water, forests, caves or castles? (just trying to understand where you're coming from.
Beaver Bother notwithstanding, I never thought the minigames were TOO terrible. I will agree getting 101% is indeed a time sink. (even with a guide) My big wall in the game was trying to beat Donkey Kong Arcade a second time to get the Nintendo Coin and access the last Key.
@SupraDarky I played it back when it was released, but didn't get to finish it. Was a decent Mario64/Banjo-like platformer, and had a nice soundtrack, besides it being really cool to see Donkey Kong's character graphics realized in full above-average-n64-3D. But it was WAY. TOO. F-ING. LONG! They did manage to put so much padding in the game to make it get old. At least for a semi-completionist such as myself.

@SupraDarky I´m very surprised to learn, from the above comments and from general hearsay, that a lot of people seemingly didn´t like DK64. I got it as a kid when it came out, and I have nothing but good things to say about it. It´s extremely atmospheric, it´s got good level design, and the gameplay is all over the place with the different characters and mini games (out of which the roller coaster ones stick out as exceptionally fun, to me anyway) . Even the bosses were clever and very memorable. One thing I hear often from people who claim to dislike DK64 (they tend to be people who also didn´t actually play it, strangely enough) is that "It´s got glitches", to which I can only think: "Yeah? Nearly every great game had glitches, but it´s not something that the average player would likely encounter, for the most part. OoT had glitches - is OoT bad?"
@steaktastebetterpill The main problem people have with DK64 is that there's too many things to collect. I personally don't mind it, it just means players are challenged to memorize the maps more accurately than in other games (and some later worlds do get pretty maze-y, like the caves), but if you don't want to invest your time in the game because of that, that's fine by me.
